DEALER WORKBOOK 2020 / 2021
According to my earliest data, our hard work resulted in sales of a whopping 32 pairs the first month and 456 pairs that first year. What the data doesn’t show is how much learning took place and how motivating it was to find the support of athletes, dealers, and like-minded companies who really cared about awesome products and responsible ways of doing business. Thanks to you, our dealers and many advocates, we’ve been able to build on that humble beginning. It is through you that our reputation as a responsible brand that backs up its products has been formed. As we move into our 20th year of business, we are proud of the products and services we provide and we couldn’t be successful without you. Cheers to you and many more successful years together!

20 YEARS OF KAHTOOLA
In the summer of 1999, here in Flagstaff, Arizona, I started putting together a company and product one piece at a time. What became the Kahtoola Traction System, or KTS Crampon, was developed and made in a small shop by hand, first just by me, and then with the help of family and friends. We ended up on the waiting list for the 2001 Outdoor Retailer Winter Market and were lucky enough to get a 10x10 booth in the hallway.
Mary McIntyre | Queen of Zangla | Zanskar, India
KAHTOOLA: TIBETAN WORD FOR "DIRECTLY" For two decades, our goal has been to get people directly where they want to go and to improve the experiences of outdoor enthusiasts, whether they’re running out the front door, hiking in the mountains or fishing on frozen lakes. Not only have our products changed the face of winter traction, but sales have also allowed us to support projects we feel make a difference in people’s lives.
Kahtoola for the People (KFP) has granted 1% of annual sales to fund projects around the world that preserve and enrich indigenous mountain cultures and protect the environment by improving access to healthcare, education, sustainable living, and other valuable resources.

Looking beyond traditional crampons and rigid mountaineering boots, the KTS Crampon was designed with a focus on adding winter safety and performance to hiking with flexible footwear.

Featuring many popular elements of the KTS Crampon, the K•10 provides a lighter, more simplified design with an easy-to-use Quick-Fit binding system.

From day one we have been a small, privately-owned company, and we’re proud to say we remain that way today. This identity allows us to never sacrifice any aspects of our business. From design, to marketing, to shipping, to customer service and on down the line, it’s what empowers us to continue making great gear and using business to give back. Whenever we can inspire people to be happier, safer, and to thrive in the outdoors, we rejoice.

NANOspikes® footwear traction provides high-performance traction on icy and snow-packed city streets with unrivaled comfort and durability. Run, walk, and safely transition between dry and slippery pavement. TERRAIN CONDITIONS FOOTWEAR
Roads, Sidewalks Ice, Hard-Packed Snow Running Shoes
Spike Design Highly durable, wear-resistant tungsten carbide spikes are held in place with a lightweight aluminum anchor. Ten spikes per foot bite into ice and snow while a surrounding TPU cleat provides added traction and shock absorption.
Dual Compound TPU A soft outer compound provides wear-resistance, flexibility, and aids in snow release, while a hard inner compound near the spikes disperses force against the outsole of footwear. Additional upward-facing traction ensures NANOspikes® stay in place against footwear.
Reinforced Eyelets Reinforced using durable TPU inserts, the patented eyelet design prevents tearing at each connection point, allowing the elastomer band to be lighter and stronger.
Toe Bail Provides added security and prevents the toe from pushing through the front of the elastomer harness.

Spike Design Twelve spikes per foot deliver three levels of traction. Long-lasting tungsten carbide spikes offer the initial bite on ice and packed snow, a lightweight aluminum step provides additional grip on uneven surfaces, and TPU lugs dig into slush and loose terrain. Open TPU Matrix Fully engages terrain while a streamlined geometry distributes dynamic spike movement, quickly sheds snow, and comfortably conforms to a wide range of footwear. Small cleats keep the TPU matrix firmly against the footwear outsole.
Reinforced Eyelets Reinforced using durable TPU inserts, the patented eyelet design prevents tearing at each connection point, allowing the elastomer band to be lighter and stronger.
Integrated Toe Bail Using the same technology and durable TPU as the reinforced eyelets, an integrated toe bail provides added security and prevents the toe from pushing through the front of the elastomer harness. Raised Heel Tab Allows for easy pull-back and removal. Elastomer Harness A new TPE elastomer harness geometry with eight attachment points provides a secure fit and allows for easy entry. Low profile and highly durable, it remains stretchy in cold temperatures, down to -30°F.

THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE
MATERIALS + DESIGN We believe premium materials paired with great design results in the best products. If one exists without the other, the product is incomplete. Combining 20 years of design experience and knowledge gained from prototyping, testing, and using countless materials, we’ve taken everything we’ve learned and applied in other great Kahtoola products and adapted them to create our newest winter traction product: EXOspikes™.
TPE HARNESS Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is a naturally strong, lightweight, and stretchy material ideal for keeping EXOspikes™ securely fit to a wide range of flexible footwear. Our carefully selected compound is ideal for continued use in cold temperatures and has the ability to stretch more than five times its own length without breaking.
STEEL LINKS The durable, pear-shaped steel link design securely couples the TPE elastomer harness to the open TPU matrix, while still allowing the EXOspikes™ to dynamically flex while walking, running or hiking.
Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a proven material used in a large percent of our product line, and for good reason. It is lightweight, flexible, durable, and most importantly, versatile. With EXOspikes™, all of these properties work together. Naturally abrasion resistant, the flexibility of the open TPU matrix dynamically engages with terrain and provides a comfortable, custom fit while the overall design is 40% lighter than MICROspikes® footwear traction.
TUNGSTEN CARBIDE With unrivaled durability and wear resistance, tool-grade tungsten carbide gives EXOspikes™ an aggressive initial bite into ice and hard surfaces. The small carbide profile creates an immense amount of pressure on each spike, which provides confident, reliable grip no matter what part of your foot is engaged with terrain.
ALUMINUM Often used as a lightweight alternative to steel, we chose aluminum for another beneficial property: malleability. For EXOspikes™, a soft, secondary aluminum step is specifically designed to grip loose rocks, snow, and ice.
Winner of Backpacker Magazine’s 2018 Hall of Fame Award and 2012 Editors’ Choice Gold Award, MICROspikes® footwear traction is the benchmark for stretch-on winter traction when hiking on frozen winter trails. TERRAIN CONDITIONS FOOTWEAR
Rugged Mountain Trails Packed Snow, Mixed Ice with Rocks Trail Running Shoes, Hiking Shoes, Boots
Spike Design Twelve spikes per foot, each made from heat-treated stainless steel, are durable and corrosion-resistant. Chain and link components are designed to move independently and prevent snow buildup.
Stainless Steel Chains Welded stainless steel chains ensure reliable performance and durability, and provide additional traction.
Elastomer Harness Low profile and ergonomically shaped, the elastomer bands are constructed from a durable TPE for a secure fit that remains stretchy in cold temperatures, down to -30°F.

PROTECTING OUR PUBLIC LANDS Kahtoola makes outdoor gear that allows people to explore and enjoy wild and beautiful places. Based in Flagstaff, AZ, and surrounded by the sublime geology, wildlife, and open spaces of the Colorado Plateau, we are afforded endless opportunities for adventure. Inspiration can be discovered around every canyon bend, along each stretch of river, among its stunning rock formations, and by immersing oneself in its vast landscapes. It is this inspiration that drives our passion to advocate for protecting and preserving public lands for future generations. In March of 2019, Danny Giovale traveled to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., where he joined a diverse group of northern Arizona representatives for meetings with federal agencies to stop uranium mining around the Grand Canyon. Kahtoola is banding together with others in support of ongoing Native American efforts to make permanent the standing 20-year uranium mining ban put in place by the Obama administration in 2012. Contamination from existing and new mining claims will have irreversible and adverse effects on the area’s watershed, diversity of wildlife, and native indigenous cultures.
