WELCOME CLASS OF 2022 We are very excited to welcome you to campus, and we want to encourage you to check out all that the Greek Community at Marietta College has as you begin your college experience. The Greek Community has been a large part of campus life throughout most of Marietta College’s history. The first fraternal organization started on campus in 1859, and since then the members of the Greek Community continue to take the lead in almost every aspect of campus life. Over 18% of the current student body are members of four (4) Fraternities and three (3) Sororities represented on campus. These groups are self-governed by two democratic bodies: the IFC or Interfraternity Council governs all of our NIC (North American Interfraternity Conference) Organizations; the Panhellenic Council governs our NPC (National Panhellenic Conference) sororities. We are hoping to expand our community in the coming years to include NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council, historically AfricanAmerican Greek Letter Organizations) as well as NAPA (Asian Pacific Islander American fraternities/sororities) and other culturally based fraternal organizations. There are many opportunities available to the members of the Greek Community which help prepare them for success after college. By learning from the lessons of the past, our Greek Community is looking forward to a bright future, a future we hope you will choose to become a part of. Many of Marietta College’s prominent alumni are members of our Greek Community, and their successes can be traced back to the decision they made to join a fraternity or sorority. Leadership, Scholarship, Fellowship, and Service are the foundations of our Greek Community, and the values of each organization help to make us all better students, employees, servants of the community, and friends. While many things have changed since the first fraternities were founded in the mid-1800’s, the values of the Greek Community continue to be a leading force on this campus. What will be your legacy? Will you stand out and rise above the ordinary? Will you seek out opportunities to improve yourself and others? Will you give back to the community in which you live? And, are you looking to get the most out of your time at Marietta? I encourage you to ask questions, explore all your options, and follow your heart to find your place within the Marietta Community, hopefully within the Greek Community. I wish you all the best in your first year here, and I look forward to seeing you at our many events throughout the semester. Once again, welcome to campus. Fraternally Yours, Robert A. Marias Assistant Director of Campus Involvement 740-376-4483 | ram010@marietta.edu

SCHOLARSHIP AND LEADERSHIP

GAMMA SIGMA ALPHA Chartered at Marietta College on May 2, 1994, the Beta Gamma chapter of Gamma Sigma Alpha is the National Greek Academic Honors Society on campus. The purpose is to recognize and advance academic excellence as a core value of fraternities and sororities and also, showcase the diverse academic and intellectual accomplishments of members of the Greek Community. Members must have a 3.5 GPA and be in the Junior or Senior class at the time of initiation.

ORDER OF OMEGA Chartered on October 7, 1991, the Mu Beta chapter of Order of Omega is the National Greek Leadership Honors Society at Marietta College. Its purpose is to recognize fraternity men and sorority women who have attained a high standard of leadership in interfraternity activities, to encourage them to continue along this line, and to inspire others to strive for similar achievements. Membership in this society is very selective. Members of the Greek community in the top 10% are eligible for membership each year, and only the top 3% are selected to become members of the Mu Beta Chapter of Order of Omega at Marietta College. 6

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WILL I GET HAZED? Hazing has no place in our Greek community. You absolutely should not be hazed. You should never participate in any activity that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are ever in doubt, contact Robert Marias in the Greek Life Office for more information or clarification. (The AntiHazing Policy is included in this guide for reference). HOW DO I KNOW IF MY SON/DAUGHTER IS BEING HAZED? Keep the lines of communication open with your son/daughter and make sure that you ask what activities they are participating in. If your child hesitates or says that they cannot tell you, probe a little further. Except for the ritual, your child should be able to describe everything. Some signs to look for: missing class, overly tired, and regular communication habits change significantly. WHAT WILL I GET OUT OF JOINING A FRATERNITY/SORORITY? You will be amazed at what you will get from your Greek experience. Joining a fraternity/sorority rounds out the college experience. We often say that you get a complete education in a fraternity/ sorority. Greek Life offers lifelong friends, leadership opportunities, academic support, social events, sporting activities, and networking opportunities when looking for a job or an internship. WHAT IS THE FINANCIAL OBLIGATION TO JOINING A GREEK ORGANIZATION? Each organization is different, and with that comes different costs for membership. Each chapters page includes approximate costs for members and new members per semester. Ask each chapter for a breakdown of expenses, so you can see how the dues are used for your benefit as a member/new member. WILL JOINING AFFECT MY GRADES? Ideally, yes! Our Greek organizations hold the top GPAs of all organizations on campus semester after semester! The fraternities and sororities can offer support in time management, tutoring, scholarships, and class assistance. At the end of the day, it’s up to you to earn good grades, but our chapters can help quite a bit.

6 THINGS YOU SHOULD DO DURING RECRUITMENT 1. Attend as many of the scheduled recruitment events from as many different chapters as you can, so you can get a feel for which chapter you have common ground with. 2. Go on the National Websites to see what their National organization is all about. 3. Talk to other PNMs to get a sense of who may be interested in the same chapter you are interested in. These people could potentially be in your new chapter. 4. If you have questions, feel free to go to the Campus Involvement Office and ask Robert Marias. Robert can be reached by e-mail at ram010@marietta.edu, or at 740-376-4483. 5. If you receive multiple bids, carefully consider each Chapter before deciding on which one seems to fit you best. 6. Make up your own mind. You need to make the decision that is right for YOU, regardless of what other people might say or feel, and regardless of who your friends decide to join. (You can still be friends, even if you’re in a different fraternity/sorority). 7

PANHELLENIC PRESIDENT Hello New Students, On behalf of the Panhellenic community, It is my pleasure to welcome you to a fun and exciting new life here at Marietta College. Greek Life is one of the most exciting ways to get involved on a larger scale here at Marietta College. Joining Greek life here is not just a social experience. It helps you grow my strengthening your academics, promoting service, gaining leadership experiences and creating a broad personal network. Greek life to me has brought me great joys and opportunities that I could never have gotten anywhere else on campus. In high school, I wasn’t a joiner or as involved as I should have been. Greek life gave me the chance to get involved on campus as well as give back to my community. I met amazing sisters that I know will be lifelong friends after college. My sisters have pushed me to be the best me I could be and take on leadership roles I never thought I could take on before. I encourage you to keep an open mind throughout the Formal Recruitment process and ask lots of questions. Myself, as well as the other members of the recruitment team, are here to help you in any way we can throughout this recruitment journey to find your home away from home. I am incredibly excited to see where your recruitment journey takes you. Fraternally, Maria Mudre Panhellenic President

We, as Undergraduate members of women’s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.

The Panhellenic Council is the governing body of all of the NPC sororities on a college campus. We are committed to relationships built on trust through transparency, accountability, and mutual respect. Innovation and our core values of friendship, leadership, service, knowledge, integrity, and community guide us in fulfilling our mission. The Council itself is comprised of the members who serve on the executive council and one delegate from each Panhellenic Chapter. To be considered a Panhellenic Chapter, you have to follow National Panhellenic Guidelines and values. This group is in charge of streamlining communications from each chapter to another, voting on bylaws and evaluating the health and morale of the community. The executive council sits in on this overarching group and has other duties as the executive council, independent of the delegates. At Marietta our Panhellenic council is made up of 5 executive Positions; President, Vice President, Recruitment Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.

PANHELLENIC RECRUITMENT DIRECTOR Hello Potential New Members, On behalf of the Panhellenic Community, welcome to Marietta College and Sorority Primary Recruitment! Marietta College is an exceptional institution that provides many different opportunities to get involved, a great way to get involved and engaged with campus is by becoming a part of the amazing Greek Community that we have here. All of our chapters strive to succeed academically, make philanthropic contributions, and to become the best women that we can be. Throughout the recruitment process, you will meet women who are loyal, gracious and hold themselves to high standards. Most importantly, you will meet women who are proud of their organizations, their sisters, and Greek Life here at Marietta College. The experiences I have had since joining a sorority are something that I wouldn’t give up for anything else in this world. I had a hard time adjusting to college life initially, but being a part of Greek Life helped me to feel comfortable and step out of my comfort zone. Throughout my years here being a part of the Greek Community has provided me with friendships and leadership opportunities that I could not have received anywhere else. I would not be the woman I am today without the support of my sisters and the rest of the Panhellenic Community, and I will forever be grateful for everything that Greek Life has given me. I hope that you have the same great experiences as a Greek woman here at Marietta College. Participating in sorority recruitment is taking the first step in your own amazing journey. Recruitment is all about you- where you see yourself, which sorority makes you feel at home, and what you will contribute to the Greek community. The Recruitment Team and Rho Gammas are here to help you along the way! Please reach out if you need anything at all. Most importantly of all, enjoy this week and have a great time! SIGMA KAPPA National Founding: November 9, 1874

Sigma Kappa was founded on four values: personal growth, friendship, loyalty, and service. Today, our members live these values while pushing one another to achieve their individual goals. Sigma Kappa women come from many different backgrounds and have a variety of interests. Our chapter contains girls in many different areas of study. Our members are well rounded from athletes to artists to adventurers. We embrace our differences but share a common love for Sigma Kappa. We live our motto: One Heart, One Way. We have a passion for getting things done, and share a lot of fun memories along the way. No matter what we are doing—highway trash pick-up, walking to end Alzheimer’s, or making pancakes for Sigma Stacks—we share our joy and have a fun time together. Together we have slept over at a sister’s lake house, participated in Greek Week lip-synchs, and enjoyed movie nights, formals, picnics and much more! I will challenge my members to abide by these fraternal expectations and confront those who violate them.

INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT Greetings New Students, It is my pleasure to welcome you to Marietta College, and your home for the rest of your collegiate career. This College, your participation in Greek life, and the memories you make will mold you into people of which your parents would be proud. Over the next four years, you will enjoy the opportunities and experiences Marietta College offers while meeting people who will change your life. Marietta College offers many student organizations that impact the community. On such a small campus, it is important to stay engaged in order to receive the full college experience. It’s hard to take the first step— to leave your room and meet new people—but these actions can lead to friendships that last a lifetime. Whether you become a part of the Pioneer Activities Council, serve as a Resident Assistant, or join Greek life, participation in on-campus activities will help you grow as a person. I encourage you to take the first step by looking into all of the on-campus opportunities Marietta College provides. One way to get the full college experience is by partaking in Greek Life. Marietta College’s Greek life is arguably the most effective and involved college organization on this campus. Our well established Greek community boasts leaders all over campus. Greek life is about learning, leading, and lending to the community. At the start of the semester, you will see Greek letters all over campus as we prepare for our various recruitment events. There are numerous opportunities for on-campus involvement, but Greek life leads the charge. When it comes to community service, charity, fun, and overall attendance, Greeks more than pull their weight. This guidebook will hopefully show you a little more of what I gladly call my home here at Marietta College—the Greek community. I look forward to seeing you on campus and wish you best this semester! Fraternally, Joseph Bradley President, Interfraternity Council

ALPHA SIGMA PHI National Founding: December 6, 1845 Chapter Chartered: June 30, 1860

Alpha Sigma Phi was founded at Yale University on December 6th, 1845. Marietta College’s chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi was founded on June 30th, 1860 with the designation of Delta Chapter. Our members are actively living out our fraternity’s values: Silence, Charity, Purity, Honor, and Patriotism. Marietta College’s chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi has a rich and important history with our national fraternity. During the civil war era Delta Chapter kept alive the traditions of our fraternity while other chapters closed their doors. From 1867 to 1907, Delta Chapter was the only active chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi. The brothers at Marietta College were able to keep alive the fraternity until its re-founding. Fast forward to today, our brothers are actively seeking opportunities on the Marietta College campus to live out our Motto; To Better the Man. Every Alpha Sig at Marietta College has the opportunity to attend leadership conferences held in the summer and the fall. We also hold a car show once a year to raise money for the Homes for Our Troops charity. Being a member of Alpha Sigma Phi will provide many leadership opportunities, networking connections, and lifelong brotherhood. Philanthropy:

ALPHA TAU OMEGA National Founding: September 11, 1865 Chapter Chartered: June 24, 1890

The Alpha Tau Omega National Fraternity was established in 1865. The Marietta College chapter was established in 1890, but due to the difficult conditions during the Spanish American War, it was forced to surrender its charter in 1898. The chapter was re-established in 1920 when Alpha Digamma, a historic local fraternity founded in 1859, was granted a charter. The chapter is now known as the Beta Rho Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega. In the past 10 years, Alpha Tau Omega brothers have collectively raised over $105,000 for Bike MS to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This past year, we raised $12,732 for this worthy cause. Our chapter claims many notable alumni who have made a lasting impact on Marietta College and our country. Edwy Brown, class of 1894, helped establish the petroleum engineering program at Marietta College. Don Drumm, class of 1915, was a Marietta College Athletics legend as player, coach and athletic director. Major Andrew Ivan, class of 1967, served in the United States Air Force 13th Tactical Squadron during the Vietnam War. Philanthropy:

DELTA TAU DELTA National Founding: January 1, 1858 Chapter Chartered: November 23, 1968

In February of 1967, a Crescent Colony of Delta Tau Delta was established at Marietta College, replacing the Beta Delta Epsilon local fraternity. On Saturday, November 23, 1968, the Epsilon Upsilon Chapter of Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity was established at Marietta College—the Fraternity’s 101st Chapter. Among the Delts helping to install the Chapter and initiate the Marietta College Delts was Marietta native Robert Ferguson ’71 of Gamma Xi, who later became the Marietta Delt Chapter Advisor, and is still advising even today. Since 1855, there have been a total of nine men’s fraternity chapters established at Marietta College. Although the Delt chapter is the youngest of these, the Delts are the only one to remain in continuous operation since installation. Over 400 Marietta College men have been initiated as Delts since 1968. Delta Tau Delta is the place for leaders to hone their skills, youths to grow, students to find support and guidance, and men to find their paths to a life of excellence. Philanthropy:
