Residential building
Renovation of a farm house
Place: Enna/Sicily Year: 2018 Type: Architectural project Project phase: Final Task: Project manager
8
With its position right in the middle of Sicily, south east of Enna’s hills, the househas a breathtaking view on the surrounding countryside, with the Etna on the background. The purpose of the work is the renovation of an old farm house, so that it could be used as summer house or as permanent living place. The pre-existing shape of the building has been maintained/ conserved in according to the local regulations that do not allow demolishing it; however remodeling internal spaces and re-making the roof with a different slope it is allowed if the total volume of the building does not change. The building consists of a series of simple volumes, connected with each other and following the topography of the area. The unifying element of the project, influenced by the original house, is the roof, that includes all the spaces in the house, both internal and external, and becomes a true view point that dominates the immensity of the horizon. The striking contrast between the front side with view on the landscape and the dullness of lateral and back sides creates a strong framing effect. The layout of the house is very simple, organized on two floors and with a clear separation between common and private spaces. From the ground floor and parallel to the long side of the building a staircase ascending between two walls divides the building in two different areas: a private night zone with bathrooms, and a completely open one, including a living and a dining room; the last one has double height and a music room upstairs is looking out over it. The night zone and the bathroom are located on the first floor. The spacious living area on the ground floor is framed by a glass window that divides the inside from the porch harmonizing the building with the outside, emphasizing the lines running parallel to the ground, clearing and connecting the best part of the place with the life inside. In contrast with the horizontal layout of the house and the big generous roof, two fire places, one inside the other outside, catalyze the social life and conviviality of the house. The external one, in particular, has the function to expand the internal space towards the outside, like an echo in the landscape.

This site in the historic city center/old quarter of Enna can be reached only by foot, and it is one of the few places that can benefit of large internal garden; moreover, it is conveniently located on the south side of the town, offering a fantastic view of the local geography. This rather small apartment on the ground floor of a condo building, faces a private terrace with a small shed. The external space continues on a piece of terraced ground. The customer requested to enlarge the small apartment, creating a more flexible and functional space that could harmoniously fit in the surroundings. The project task has been to create balance between open living spaces and private areas, in order to ensure privacy and safety. The space enlargement has created a living area, connected to the apartment by a path with glass windows and wooden sliding sunscreens, that allows total fusion between internal and external environment. Focus of the project was to identify kitchen/dining and living areas that could benefit of the natural light in the morning and in the evening, thanks to sliding glassdoor that can capture the light all the day and in any season. The shed became a service space, including laundry, bathroom and storage, with an independent access. The living area is the view point to contemplate the landscape; the outside area, with small garden terraces, includes in its lower part a barbecue corner, accessible by a staircase that connects all levels.

Family house
46
This leisure house, is immersed in a beautiful natural area, facing the Pergusa lake. The elongated shape of the building recalls the one of traditional local houses. One of the original ideas about the possible use of this house was having more terraces than enclosed spaces. As first step of the project, a tiled platform has been designed, as center of all home activities. The main challenge in order to optimize the space, was to get a very compact and yet functional layout. The building develops on two levels: the ground floor, where the living area founds place, opens on the garden; the upper floor hosts sleeping rooms, equipped with sliding windows and wooden sunblinds, and with view on the lake. When the blinds are closed, the building becomes a compact element with a defined, pure/simple geometrical shape. The one-piece-roof is the main compositive element of the project, delimiting both internal and external spaces. The kitchen, in the center of the building, is the trait d’union between the living/dining area and the full-length porch, that is designed as a room without walls, open on the swimming pool and the garden. The kitchen is connected to the porch by a wide glass window that eliminates any border between internal and external spaces.

Place: Enna/Sicily Year: 2008 Type: Architectural project Project phase: Preliminary Task: project manager
58
The building location, at the edge of a small residential neighborhood, between Enna alta and Enna bassa, is quite peripheric. Therefore, the project wants to create an immediately recognizable shape, based on a rather traditional building canon that can easily match the surroundings, instead of looking for conflicting new/modern architectural styles. With four levels above ground plus the roof, the building shows a strong identity, influencing the surrounding area. The project design is based on (the idea/concept of ) motion. A big level jump characterizes the entrance; above it, in the upstairs levels, a system of loggias/balconies closed by wooden sunblinds (and facing the surroundings) develops. The sunblinds are not meant to be mere borders between in- and outside: the two dimensions, not anymore in conflict with each other, live together and mix gradually with each other on the balcony platform, where the rhythm is dictated by the structure. In these ambiguous, not in-, nor outside, spaces, the building faรงade expands and space gets amplified/dilated. The synthesis between in- and outside gets further amplified by an access ramp that starts outside and marks the ground going towards the parking space level. Elevator and staircase connect the parking level with the above floors. In contrast with the planimetric study, rich of shapes and tension, the openings are characterized by a rational rhythm, that confers order to the entire building. The lack of ledges, together with the discontinuity in the roof, amplifies the volumes plastic effect.

Residential building

Place: Enna/ Sicily Year: 2007 Type: Architectural project Project phase: Final Task: Project manager

The complex is located in the outskirt of Enna Bassa, on a land with a total surface of 2252 square meters, surrounded by two public roads, an area with pre-existing buildings, and a natural impluvium. The area has two access points. The building runs parallel to the longest side of the area, and follows the natural North-South slope of the ground. It is 56 m long and (max) 11.30 m wide. The project has taken into account the minimal distances from other buildings and land borders, the presence of open spaces for rest and collective use, and the internal roads connecting the two access points. The design has focused on the strong relation between architecture and landscape. The building consists of two structurally independent blocks that are connected in the middle, the two entrances are located on different levels. Each block has four levels above ground, a ground floor with the building front door, and an underground level with private parking spaces. On the ground floor there are also spaces, with independent access, for commercial activities. Access to the above ground levels takes place from two staircases with elevators. The building has got 18 units in total: 14 apartments -simplex or duplex- and 4 spaces for commercial activities. Shapes and dimensions of the units are designed to be all different, to match, as much as possible, specific home needs and wishes. In each living unit an open space is usually put between loggias or next to terraces, so that empty and full spaces alternate harmoniously on the two fronts, creating a very original composition.

Master thesis
(Europan7) “Suburban challenge”: urban intensity and housing diversity Place: Nanterre/France Year: 2003 Type: Master thesis project Supervisor: Prof. Pasquale Culotta Co-supervisor: Arch. Giovanni Sarta The area on which this work, developed is located on the north of the city of Nanterre. The territory hosts local governmental buildings, private companies with relevant economic value, big infrastructures, and working-class neighborhoods. The area appears inhomogeneous, fragmented by railways and roads that strongly mark the territory and make hard to access this part of the city. The site does not seem to have features that could clearly define its identity. This urban space lacks of semantic images that could induce its inhabitants to identify themselves with the place. The irregular rhythm created by the traffic on the roads and the empty spaces between urban areas, represents the never-ending dynamic evolution of this place. Therefore, the project site is a place with a complex, far to be linear, evolution process. The language of the form originates from the fact that the existing roads and the peculiar topographical situation of the area interact dynamically to organize the urban space, thus suggesting a restructuring intervention.
84
Beside a three-dimensional development, the space must comply with the requirements and qualities of a specific place, that is able to promote a complex web of social relations. The need to identify landmarks that give a “unitary imprint” to the territory arises from urban disarticulation. The apparent randomness and unpredictability of clearly plastic volumes determines and emphasizes the strength and consistency of the design. Therefore, the project through the third dimension, redefines the city skyline, establishing a recognizable spatial canon that is able to orient the heterogeneous urban structure.
85
The functional flexibility of the project, that includes offices, different kinds of livings spaces, factories, a multifunctional community center, promotes the identification between individuals and place, blurring the borders between public and private space. The compositional strength of the project is based on a “becoming” form, on a condition of folding-unfolding, contraction-dilation, involution-evolution, compression development, thus escaping to an organization of Cartesian type. In this project, a selection and variety of spaces can be found, that deny any centrality: linear, curved, turbulent, enveloping, free. The compositional strategy is based on the design of a unitary architectural organism that articulates and extends in a variety of coherent spaces and forms and interprets the tensions produced by the strong and sensitive flow lines that characterize the site, structuring itself in a process of dynamic transformations. The most stimulating aspect of this intervention is its unpredictability: there’s no way of knowing in advance what kind of space will be revealed during the journey. In the articulation of the spaces, the project reflects the fluid variety of interpersonal relationships, and the geometries get more closely linked to man and life, in the sense that they derive from flows and movements. Based on this concept, rather than thinking to an aggregate of independent building “objects”, we designed a more flexible and permeable architectural “organism”, where the plurality of perceptions should offer to the observer a complex and exiting experience, guiding him to multiple associations, carriers of never-ending changes.
