PROGRAM NOTE Cocoa Cantata is a 21st-century response to J.S. Bach’s Coffee Cantata. Written for soprano, baritone, and bass-baritone, the work explores politics in the multibillion-dollar chocolate industry. Musically, the piece imitates Bach’s instrumentation, but not his Baroque style. The paternalism of Bach’s secular cantata is replaced by a more evolved (yet humorous) attitude toward issues of patriarchy, fair-trade practices, and the marketing of pleasure. Cocoa Cantata was commissioned by Triphammer Arts Inc. with The Arts at Grace and Society for New Music. David Cote thanks the Hambidge Center for time and support in writing the libretto.

CHARACTERS BOBBY WONDERS IV (Baritone) CEO and public face of a century-old, family-owned global confectionary brand. He’s trying to balance profits and his conscience. Prone to patronizing bluster, cynicism, and bad puns. AMARA BLISS (Soprano) Stylish founder of a chic, fair-trade boutique chocolatier. She competes in a cutthroat environment, but maintains poise and values. A fighter, survivor, and innovator in the business. SNACKWRIGHT (Bass-Baritone) Head of the Flavor Lab at Wonders Inc. He specializes in chocolates and other sweets. An unabashed flavor nerd who really gets into the chemistry of taste. SETTING Present day. The gleaming corporate offices of Wonders Inc., the global brand that manufactures immensely popular chocolate bars and a constellation of other candies. We are in the 35th floor executive suite, outside a conference room. Coffee table, chairs, prominent Wonders™ logo displayed on a wall. Poster-size photographs of children of all nations smiling and laughing as they bite into a Wonders Bar™. SYNOPSIS Chocolate global mogul Bobby Wonders is attempting a hostile takeover of boutique chocolatier Bliss Confections. He has invited Bliss founder Amara Bliss to his corporate office to sign over her company. Amara refuses. They argue over their businesses and missions. A flavor scientist named Snackwright eavesdrops, finally interrupting to say he has created a new type of chocolate. Combining elements from both companies, he says, he has created a superchocolate called Wow Cacao. Each boss tastes it and is transported with pleasure, which leads to a reconciliation. Amara won’t sell her company, but they can collaborate on exploring the possibilities of Wow Cacao.

LIBRETTO (During the overture, there’s an argument in the conference room. We see figures silhouetted behind a frosted window. Sitting, standing, pacing, pointing fingers. Enter SNACKWRIGHT in white lab coat, carrying a silver box. AMARA BLISS storms out, followed by BOBBY WONDERS, who waves a paper at her.) Sign! No!

AMARA —and exploit the goodwill I have earned to benefit Big Choco. It’s a PR stunt! I won’t merge and become a subsidiary of Bobby Wonders’ global choco octopus! I will go back to my board and draft a counterproposal.

BOBBY

BOBBY Why do you think I’m doing this, Amara?

AMARA

AMARA You can’t stand competition, Bobby. BOBBY I admire you. Wonders Inc. is committed, too. We pay tens of millions extra for certified cocoa, millions more to certification firms. But demand is high. Higher than you can supply.

(They freeze, as Snackwright addresses the audience.)

I work for Bobby Wonders, who’s attempting an acquisition. The target is Amara Bliss. I’m not the villain; please don’t hiss. Will bonbons come from bitter opposition?

AMARA So the market fluctuates. When I started out, there were only a few boutique chocolatiers. Now there’s an Indie Choco glut. Our customers will accept a bump in cost. BOBBY ‘Til no one can afford a Bliss Bar? Kids don’t get them on Halloween. They’ll never know how good they taste.

I am a scientist, you see, and food’s my chosen field, to be precise, confection’ry: sweets and treats and all candy that cocoa beans and sugar cane will yield.

SNACKWRIGHT Like agitated molecules, they clash with intent to destroy. Some chain reactions in a tube reveal the data that can prove how certain taste collisions lead to joy.

BOBBY Not according to your board of directors. Wonders Inc. is tossing a lifesaver—pardon the pun—to Bliss Confections. You’re in the red. AMARA When a company commits to sustainable cocoa farms, zero deforestation, and fair trade practices, it can bite into profits. But the chocolate tastes twice as delicious. Remember delicious, Bobby? BOBBY Yes, Amara Bliss products are a wonder—pardon the pun. You are the epitome of Indie Choco! We should join forces and—

AMARA What’s your game, Bobby? BOBBY Who do you make chocolate for? Anyone who loves it.

AMARA BOBBY

You know as well as I Bliss Bar customers are coastal elites whose carbon footprint deletes any eco-benefits accrued. They think they’re so green, because of sustainable beans; but it’s just a load of attitude. AMARA Oh, are we going there? At least I’m not marketing death. Mass-produced candy meth, addicting innocent kids. They don’t know that these sweeties will lead to diabetes…! Sales would plummet if they did. SNACKWRIGHT If I may interrupt for a moment: Both of you are right— yet both of you are wrong.


BOBBY Amara, this is Snackwright, the head scientist from the Flavor Lab. SNACKWRIGHT Hello Ms. Bliss, a pleasure to meet you. I admire your Sour Salt Crunch.

(Snackwright opens the box, which contains two squares of chocolate.)

AMARA Uh, thanks. How are we both right and wrong?

SNACKWRIGHT The rivalry between you is no secret. Trash talk on social media, gossip at the Choco Expo. However… I’ve made a discovery that pertains to both of you. A new kind of chocolate.

Phenylethylamine! Theobromine! Anandamide! Sugar, vanilla and secret ingredients go into a bar that shatters all sense: Total Cacao!

BOBBY What is this feeling flowing into me? A rush of energy and ecstasy? My taste buds tingle and I have to smile, I feel like a kid who could sprint a mile. Aromas and spice from a distant shore, sharp yet tender, layered with mystery: a chocolate bar with a sense of history. Now it’s all gone, and I want more!

SNACKWRIGHT We know the names of cocoa beans: Criollo, Forastero, Trinitario, Nacional. Four types of seeds from the cacao tree. Now I have hybridized a new variety, the choicest and spiciest of Bliss beans spliced with the classics at Wonders Inc. I call it—Wow Cacao!

AMARA Ambrosia may be food of the gods, but this goddess is calling them frauds; Olympus never had it so fine. One bite and it’s like I’m drunk on wine. My body is floating on a cloud of bliss. Smoky and dark, layered with mystery: a chocolate bar with a sense of history. Come down here, angel, and give me a kiss. SNACKWRIGHT What is the sense the newborn knows, before they see or hear, or recognize a mother’s touch? Taste. Ah.
