Welcome to the second issue of the Beyond the Lens Photo Journal, where I share special images, thoughts, quotes, and my passion for nature and photography. My travels over the past year have allowed me to photograph in a wide variety of locations, some familiar, and many new. For me the location where a photograph is made is of much less importance than whether an images creates a feeling in the viewer. Perhaps due to my own feelings and experiences, these are often my most successful images. Without inspiration, I am just taking pictures, where the scene is presented at face value. But when a special moment occurs, that is when I feel I am truly creating something new and worthwhile. So much of my time time is spent exploring, discovering, and really becoming intimate with nature and the many ways it teaches me to be patient, observant, and humble. I’ve learned this is time well spent - I know of no other way to feel more alive. Take a moment to come closer to nature, feel good about life, and appreciate the simple miracles happening each and every day. Photo Tom Moore

“The true gestation period of a photograph is not the seconds, or fractions of seconds, of exposure, but rather the years the photographer has spent on a journey that is both physical and intellectual before reaching the point when the shutter was opened.” -David Ward 5

Skyscapes, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Clouds are the soul of the sky, and with special light can completely transform a scene into moment of introspection, humility, and sheer joy. Such are the feelings I felt while I waited in the early morning hours on the rocky shores of Cape Breton. I have rarely felt the soul stirred this way, but it was both memorable and fortuitous...a reminder of how good it is to be alive. • Canon 1Ds Mk III, 24mm, 1/13 sec, f/16, ISO 100

Song of the Sea, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia We are on this earth for a brief moment, yet there is so much to appreciate in the simple yet powerful motion of the sea at the shore. Slowing down time is a favorite technique for me, and here I have tried to describe visually what happens over minutes, hours, days and months. When viewed through a different perspective, we can appreciate how important our time is, and how little time we can afford to waste away from beauty and serenity. • Canon 1Ds Mk III, 19mm, 4 min, f/16, ISO 100
“Music is an avenue that enlivens my feelings. It feeds, it nourishes my emotional system. And if I have that, as my assistant, then what I see takes on something from the heart." - Paul Caponigro 9
Morning Light, Hudson Valley Simplicity is one of the key elements I try to achieve in every image. I had visualized this scene for many months, but my attempts at capturing it always seemed to elude me. On this particular morning, I tried once again, making the long hike from the river up to this barren rock and was greeted by light, moment, and sheer joy. • Canon 1Ds Mk III, 22mm, 1/6 sec, f/16, ISO 200 (3 image panorama)
