My undergraduate degree in the National University of Ireland Galway, examined the use and management of technology in business environments. Although not a design related programme, I completed a number of modules which gave me an introduction and taste of design concepts such as User Experience Design, Web Design, Interactive media and Systems Design. These modules were supplemented by my own study into design through online courses in Design Thinking, Aesthetic Design, Interaction Design and Front End Development.
For my Final Year Project (a group based task which accounted for much of our fourth year grade) we created a sports analytics platform which provides a way to record and display data that can be visually represented, enable insights into data, eliminate paper usage for tracking data and allow actionable choices based upon data for managers, coaches and players. My role was based in User Experience which primarily required me to act as an intermediary between the business and development teams in order for the users needs to be met as well as designing the UI mockups and flow. We were in consistent communication with semiprofessional clubs in our area to emulate a real world client relationship. Their feedback was positive and the project was successful, we were awarded first class honours.
Another university project I undertook was part of an Innovation, Creativity and Enterprise competition. My group came up with a design solution to tackle the prevalent issue of agricultural theft on farm yards throughout the world. We came up with an inexpensive 3D printed device which attaches to a farm gate and notifies the landowner’s phone in case of a break in. Also as part of the service was a warning system that notified users of theft in their area as well as visualised map of incidents in the region. In the final round of the contest we presented to hundreds of people and a judging panel of industry experts who named us as overall winners.

I have completed a variety of graphic design projects using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator & Sketch. Shown here is a user interface for a fitness app created for a design challenge put together a start-up company; a poster for a local music store; and a book cover for a self published author.

Audio production in many forms has long been a hobby of mine. I produce a podcast called The Fine Line with some friends which acts as a forum for lighthearted discussion surrounding a broad number of topics relating to the lives and futures of young Irish people. Guests to date have included musicians, comedians, pilots and olympic hopefuls. The show was recently featured on the front page of the Irish iTunes podcast store. I also enjoy music production and have performed at numerous events and festivals.

After lengthy & thorough research as to which path to follow in postgraduate education, the world of virtual & physical Interaction Design really captured my imagination due to the ability to combine my technology background and personal creative ambition. To prepare myself for further study I have enjoyed teaching myself new concepts and practices such as the Arduino platform through a number of projects including building physical interfaces, small musical instruments and more as I continue to play with the platform. Additionally I have began to work with the Processing coding language in the context of visual arts and interaction. Although new to me, I have picked up these new skills quickly and found them invigorating to learn. I will relish the opportunity to work with these and many other resources though the Design for Performance & Interaction programme.
