In a time were living space is as expensive as never before we need to find new, adaptive solutions for urban housing. We need to analyze possibilities for a subsequent agglomeration of citys. Flexible containers can be put in leftover vacant spaces throughout the city. The concept is to take the steel frame of old containers and fill them with prefabricated walls, floors and ceilings. The idea is to provide space quickly, cheap, flexible and where its needed. Going for parallel working processes enable the fabrication to be cheap and fast. Through its light materials, its easy to transfer and lift the container. Its also stackable up to three units, which makes it a compact solution for large scale housing projects. Imaginable fields of use are rooftop hotels, flexible work and living spaces for events or social housing for refugees or students.

rooftop The container can be placed

on flat rooftops via truck-mounted crane. Through a temporary tenancy agreement, were able to provide affordable living space. In this way, we can make thousands of m2 availible to the inhabitants. The reflective surface of the container protects the inside from overheating and merges the container with the urban environment.

c o n s t r u c ti o n g a p We can use temporary gaps to place containers. Stacked, they can provide a good amount of space within a short time. We can use it for temporary structures like student housing, festivals or the accomodation of refugees. Trough the flexibility and light weight the containers can be removed quickly.

Democracy Forum

Grete-Rehor-Park / Wien 1 / A Studio Hochbau

What is democracy? Its versatile and depends on individual interpretation. It can be defined in different approaches like music, art , information or protest. However the basic is the freedom to express and develop ones own individuality. Therefore we developed a concept to show a neutral and non implicid infrastructure. The building is initially animated by the protagonists using this structured environment like an artificial coralreef. The people arrange the functional environment according to their needs and activities. The building is based on a three axis principle. Each axis refers to an individual institution, conjoining in the middle to form a central forum. An open floor plan should enable a flexible and dynamic utilisation. Mobile furniture can be moved freely to create new settings. The walls and ceilings are cladded in membrane panels to act as projection surfaces for visuals, lectures and exibitions. the exterior skin consists of polished alu panels which reflect the sorrounding structures and merge the building into thre urban context. In the central forum a glazed pillar creates a fusion of interior and external space. The main supporting structure consists of a MERO spaceframewhich also contains lightning and air conditioning. A LED guidance system in the floor contributes supplementary orientation.

Vienna is growing. It is forecast that an increase of ca. 250.000 people will move to Vienna up to the year 2050. The city is expanding rapidly towards the 21st and 22nd districts north of the Danube. Currently and in the near future massive building projects like the Seestadt Aspern, Krankenhaus Nord and the expansion of the underground line 6 are being developed. The core idea of our project was to let the inhabitants of Floridsdorf participate in the development process and include them in the thematics and debate. Therefore we wanted to create a location, which informs the inhabitants, stimulates the communication between inhabitants and planners and functions as a base for interventions in the urban context. Simultaniously we also wanted to exhibit the works of the participants of >Studio city planning 2014 Transdanubia< to raise an increased awareness for architecture. Logically it was reasonable to present the works in the affected area....

Why Floridsdorf?

The historical centre``Am Spitz´´ around which Floridsdorf evolved, lost its Identity as a centre. This was due to the constructionof the undergroundline U6 at nearby Franz Jonas Platz. Today the Spitz is primarily functioning as a mere trafficjunction. Three major roads leading through the centre make pedestrian life extremely difficult. Cosequently premises remain vacant. The Spitz is an area combining a potentially high frequency of consumers with a strong local identity.

wanted to create an interaction between young architects and the local community of Floridsdorf. To ensure that the proprietor benefitted from our idea, we suggested to cover the working expenses of the space for the duration of the project. 1

We decided to use a vacant structure in the area, and help to bring some life into the old centre again. Vacant Spaces

The idea was to exhibit the works and concepts of architecture students about the urban area``Transdanubia´´ (Area north of the Danube). In consultation with local representatives and the regional department for urban development we initiated an architecture centre. Using an old boxing club in the nearby shopping centre, we

The concept of the exibition was to display various strategies and processeswithin urban planningin a dialogue with the local communities of Floridsdorf and Donaustadt.

The project was finanially supportedby: TU vienna, the shopping centreand the local council.

In agreement with our professors, we were offered the opportunity to show the best selected works of our fellow students. Artists and musicians were also invited to contribute to the open space dialogue and show their works and projects.

Intersection Architecture/Floridsdorf

Through the AzF cultural events took place. We succeded in establishing a methaforical bridge across the Danube and were able to connect Floridsdorf culturally to the rest of the city. The AzF offered an good insight into the process of urban planning. If one interprets city planning as the sum of many small changes and interventions, one can say that the AzF was city planning in practice. During the time of the project a cultural upgrade of the district happened.

social/professional networking Networks were the crucial factor in the succsess of the project. In every phase several parties were involved.Going back to existing networks was as important as building new clusters to realize this quite large project. The district major, regional development officials and proprietors were involved in the acquisition of th old boxclub. Many municipial institutions and local clubs helped to establish an infrastructure in the area. The university, fellow students, artists and freinds helped to bring life into the space. Social media and networks were used to promote the event troughout Floridsdorf, the university and the city. Additionally the AzF was a platform for establishing new social/professional networks and brought together all mentioned parties in one place. Furthermore we learned the importance of coordination and moderation between all contributors to the project.

think tank Dar Dasht / Isfahan / IRAN Bachelor Thesis

Dar Dasht needs life. Once a vivid bazar and housing area circulating the sunday mosque, the district was partially desolated in the Iran/Irak war. It has become an unattractive place to live due to the fact the iranian government didnt invest enough funds to rebuild the area. The local bazar was separated from the main bazar network and consequently began to decease. As the bazar is the main lifeline of every arabic city, the sorrounding area soon followed. Together with the university of arts in Isfahan, we analyzed the urban and economical potentials of Dar Dasht. The concept was to build an infrastructure for inteventions in urban space to activate the district. We liked the concept of a biennal using the vacant structures throughout the area as ateliers, exhibition-spaces and shared living space. The projected building provides the needed publicity and working-environment. Therefore the functionality of the building is confined to the cycle of an creative workingprocess meaning Idea > production > presentation. It was also important to simplify the movement through the the quarter. Accordingly the main axes between the three remaining economical centres are being conjoined in a public space. A new public institution, which is able to contribute to a new identity and establishes a creative homebase in Dar Dasht. Robert Younger

The basic idea of the project was to create a healthy environment combining social, economical and public services to revive the former business centres of Dar Dasht. At the same time the project should facilitate the gentle revolution in Iran. During the excursion it was noticable that the exchange of creative ideas and project related cooperation led to increased cultural understanding and contributed to individual development. We perceived the arts as a relative free interpretable medium to convey subtle messages of protest and provide a platform for non conformists.Consequently it was important to make availible an infrastructure, which both facilitated the urban demands and establish connections on a methaphisical basis. rudimental economic centres due to bombing + existing mobility axes

For this Purpose i used a public area in the centre of Dar Dasht, which had the potential to form a central area of movement for the public combined with a base for civic activities. To insure access to the area from all sides I established an axis on the southside. By the structure i confined myself to the workflow of a creative work process. Meaning:

Präsentation

The building >presentation< is situated in the South - East of the area and contains a big assembly hall as well as a spacious storage site on the ground floor. Two seminar rooms and also a storage area are on the upper floor. Here the core of the vertical development and the sanitary facilities are combined. A green Patio marks the entrance which also caters for air circulation and daylight.

The structure >Idea – Production< is situated in the northern part and functions as a link between the park and market place. This Axis contains workshops , exhibition rooms, a tee house, an information center and offices on the ground floor. Workplaces according to their function and level of privacy are situated on the upper floor. The vertical development functions through two cores based at each end of the building and contains all sanitary facilities and storage space. The horizontal development is made accessible through skywalks.
