Here you can gaze up at clusters of whitewashed buildings on the edge of the towering colourful, lava-layered cliffs and with the sun sinking behind the volcano. There are also plenty of shops offering souvenirs, jewellery, designer clothes and accessories. The galleries and art stores are filled with original paintings depicting Greek life. In the village be sure and take a stroll through the streets of the most well preserved Kasteli (Castle City) of Santorini, admire the tall steeples of churches and take unique photographs. It is also worth visiting the church of Panagia Mesiani, the second most important church on the island. It is dedicated to the Annunciation of Virgin Mary and has a lovely wooden temple. At the southern tip of the island south west of Fira, is the Red Beach, close to the Minoan archaeological site of Akrotiri. This is definitely worth a visit any time of the year, even if you are not planning on enjoying the swimming and sunbathing.
