Weekend Hotspot – Tannery Restaurant & Townhouse Dungarvan Co Waterford
The West Waterford region on the sunny southeast coast of Ireland is a favorite among visitors for idyllic beaches, picturesque villages and prime agriculture. Now the area, a two hour’s drive from Dublin is fast becoming known for its “foodie” culture, which includes high-quality restaurants and

accommodation. Tannery Townhouse is home to an award-winning restaurant and is just a short walk from the seafront in Dungarvan. Paul Flynn one of Ireland’s finest chefs runs the business with his wife Maire. His cooking career started out in
London with Nico Ladenis. Everything about the Tannery is meticulously perfect and seems so simply done. While Paul and his team work cleverly with local, seasonal ingredients, Máire expertly works the front of house. It’s the combination of their talents that makes visiting such a joy. The menu while not set in stone reflects what’s in season at the market and also what Flynn feels like cooking on a given day. We started with a Helvick crab crème brûlée followed by charred hake ending on a rhubarb cucumber sorbet - every mouthful exceptional! I also love the high-ceilinged and bright dining room; the tables are well-spaced, giving you a sense of privacy. The friendly staff is well-trained and their skilful service added hugely to our experience. The wine bar offers a more casual dining option, serving a tapas-style menu and specials from early evening. The rooms at Tannery Townhouse have elegant, pastel-coloured de-

sign and lots of light but request a larger room. The Irish breakfast offer next morning is also a winner! The Tannery Townhouse offers a unique location in Dungarvan with local attractions including King John’s Castle, the Augustinian church overlooking the sea at Abbeyside and Walton Park, named after Ernest Walton, the physicist who split the atom. Only a stone’s throw from the Copper Coast and Comeragh Mountains be sure to use Waterford Greenway a 46km cycling and walking trail boasting coastal, forest and farmland landscapes along an old railway line stretching to Waterford city. Visit the House of Waterford Crystal where you enjoy all aspects of the manufacturing process through a factory tour learning both historical and contemporary production techniques.
