Thomaston, Alabama is a small post-cotton town that has been in a slow but steady decline since the abolition of slavery. The lingering inhabitants work the few remaining businesses in town and commute to outside jobs in surrounding cities. The main traffic through town is people driving back and forth from the University of Alabama, North of town in Tuscaloosa, as well as people driving South to their vacation homes on the beaches of the Gulf Coast.

The Rural Heritage Foundation was born out of an attempt to spark a reinvorgoration of the town when several citizens created a board to begin assesing local resources and brainstorming way to create new jobs. The foundation began working with Auburn University’s social sciences department to formalize the organization, writing goverment grants to obtain funds, and organizing Alabama artisans and craftspeople to get involved. The board obtained a closed state prep school grounds along the main highway on permanent lease for their headquarters. he largest rural studio project ever attempted, the scope had to be divided into 2 phases. The first phase of the gift shop & gallery (completed by Emily McGlohn, J.D. Caldwell & Walker Rennaker) was designed and built first to allow the commerce of the center to continue to flourish. The second phase (our team) was to design and build a new building face and signage, events stage, restaurant, commerical kitchen, vegetable cleaning facilities, offices, entry, and parking.

COMPLETED MASTER PLAN: CAMPUS SITE AERIAL
civic/ instutional/ commercial
The Abercrombie & Fitch distribution center is unique in that it is a functionally based building typology that is designed to be comfortable to the workers who inhabit it. The mega monolithic warehouse spacial requirements for the large clothing company’s packaging and transport could easily be overwhelming and disorienting to the people inside. The idea of the design was to create several structural beacons to organize the more “human functions of the center and help orient its workers. These beacons are designed to bring in a level of human scale and warmth to the giant, automated factory-like shell.

Three pavillions are the functioning beacons that orient the perimeter around the main field. The ticketing pavillion was designed to be a gateway into the stadium on gamedays, with an audio visual area on the upper level for the announcers and filming. The single slope metal roof opens up out to the field above the simple masonry and cedar volumes below. The East and West pavillions are similar in design to the Ticeting pavillion but differ in programs. The 2 flanking pavillions house team locker rooms below with snack huts and public restaurants above.
