Candidates incurred €140k election costs McGuinness the biggest spender in byelection race

DUBLIN West byelection candidates incurred over €140k in expenses during the campaign last year, with Fianna Fail’s candidate declared the biggest spender. Figures released by the Standards in Public Office
Commission revealed the total expenditure disclosed by election and national agents at the Dublin West byelection on October 27, 2011, amounted to €143,571.02. The four top spenders, according to the report, were local Fianna Fail councillor David McGuinness, declaring
€33,905; Fine Gael’s candidate, councillor Eithne Loftus, came in second spending €31,073.18, followed by Ruth Coppinger, Socialist Party councillor, at €28,454.44, while Labour’s Patrick Nulty, the successful candidate, spent €26,739.33. Full Story on Page 6
