Coghlan sprints to seat in the Seanad Q HIROMI MOONEY
SPORTING hero and Castleknock native, Eamonn Coghlan, has been named as one of the Taoiseach’s new appointees to the Seanad. Coghlan is a three-time Olympian and former world 5,000m champion, and is the director of the Crumlin Children’s Medical and Research Foundation. He is among the 11 new faces joining the Seanad, along
with Dr Martin McAleese, the President’s husband. Coghlan’s appointment was welcomed this week by Dublin West Fine Gael TD, and Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, who said: “As the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, I am very pleased that a sporting hero, athlete and Olympian will take up a seat in the new Seanad.” Full Story on Page 4
Height of love: Newborn giraffe is welcomed at Dublin Zoo DUBLIN ZOO has welcomed a tall,
healthy, newborn giraffe to the world,who was born just one day before Queen Elizabeth II drove through the park to meet the President.
The baby giraffe was born at 11.45am on Monday, May 16, just in time for Africa Day celebrations at the zoo. The male calf stands tall at 1.8 metres, and weighs approximately 40kgs. Full Story on Page 6
