PLANS for Fingal to take sewage waste from all four Dublin councils and parts of Kildare and Meath are expected to face a wave of opposition.

IRISH Water’s proposal for the Greater Dublin Drainage Project, providing capacity to treat wastewater for 500,000 people, was lodged with An Bord Pleanala last week.

One of the most controversial aspects of the plan is the location of the outflow pipe into the Irish Sea, which will be just off the Portmarnock coast near the Baldoyle Estuary.

Malahide resident Deputy Darragh O’Brien told Dublin Gazette: “The first phase of public consultation nearly four years ago saw over 14,000 objections made.

“People continue to have major concerns.”

THE Minister for Education has admitted that the shortage of primary school places in Fingal will continue to worsen, according to a local TD. In a reply to a Parliamentary Question Minister Richard Bruton confirmed there are no plans to address the severe shortage of school places in some areas, including Kinsealy, Malahide and Portmarnock.

Fianna Fail TD Darragh O’Brien said the lack of capacity in over-subscribed primary schools can only be expected to worsen in light of the apparent inaction by Government.

He said: “The Government has been far too

slow in dealing with this crisis to date. I have been raising this escalating problem for years and it is crippling the effective provision of education in our area.

“There has never been a greater need to develop more school accommodation in our county, especially as the population is steadily rising and has been for quite some time. “ I ’ve c o n s i s te n t l y brought this to the Minister’s attention in a bid

to kickstart forward planning.

“Now that the Government have confirmed to me they will make no effort whatsoever to address the shortages of school places, the chronic situation is set to continue as we approach the forthcoming school year.”

Last year, parents in Swords pleaded with Minister Bruton to intervene as the situation reached crisis point, with over 100 children in River Valley denied a local school place.

That situation is set to ease with Swords south specifically marked out as an area in need of additional educational facilities and a new primary school due to open in 2019.

There are also two new schools earmarked for a site in Mooretown, off the Rathbeale Road after the council signed off on securing the land for the build.

But other areas of Fingal are lagging behind and Deputy O’Brien warned that as building ramps up on new housing estates “this is a problem that won’t go away”.

He added: “In fact it’s going to continue to get worse. I believe it’s my responsibility as a local elected representative to press for action until such a time that parents no longer face the pressure of finding a school place for the ir child, ” he concluded.

sive plant to process all that waste.

“I still believe smaller localised plants are the way to go, as we are already doing here in Fingal to process our own waste.”

The scheme also

includes a giant sewage plant – second only in size to Ringsend - and sludge treatment centre on a 43-acre site in Clonshaugh, 2km from Dublin Airport between the Malahide Road and the M1.

This will be linked to a 26km underground orbital sewer from Blanchardstown to intercept existing flows from Ringsend carrying waste from across Dublin as well as parts of Meath and Kildare.

A pumping station is proposed to be built on land at Abbotstown, adjacent to the National Sports Campus and the National Aquatic Centre which is also expected to

face stiff opposition.

The population of the Greater Dublin Area is expected to grow by 450,000 by 2040 and Irish Water says this key infrastructure, in tandem with upgrade works at Ringsend, is needed to meet projected demand.

Project manager Jane Chambers said: “The GDD project will form a key part of the wastewater network that is necessary to safeguard public health, protect the environment and support sustainable growth.”

Howth residents express fears over development A LARGE-SCALE development planned for Howth has sparked concerns over plans to remove thousands of tonnes of sand from an area with a history of landslides.

Objectors fear the construction of 164 apartments could have knock-on effects for the seaside village which has already seen parcels of land collapse.

from the site in the centre of Howth village bordering its Martello Tower.

The application for three four-storey apartment blocks has been lodged directly with An Bord Pleanala under strategic planning legislation granting no leave of appeal.

It includes the demolition of the derelict Baily Court Hotel on Main Street. The plan also includes 757sq m of retail and commercial space.

Honesty based food and drink outlet to be trialled at Dublin Airport DUBLIN Airport is to trial an honesty-based food and drink outlet, with a view to introducing the scheme at locations throughout its two terminals.

The Honest Eats Company fridge will be located alongside the Marquette Food Hall in Terminal 1 offering sandwiches, wraps, salads and pastries.

Customers will be trusted to take and pay for their items via a cashless self-service checkout that accepts cards and mobile payments.

Up to 73 different food and drink products will be available for purchase. The checkout will send messages to Marquette’s kitchen as sales take place to ensure that stocks are replenished. for environmental disaster with a plant on this scale is enormous.

Council Seeking Injuction Over Encampment SYLVIA POWNALL

FINGAL County Council is considering seeking a High Court injunction over an encampment at Blackwood Lane between Portmarnock and Malahide.

The owners of the field, where a group of evangelical Christians in the travelling community have camped for a religious gathering, were served with a warning notice last Friday. a Fingal County Council spokesperson said: “Owners of the land at Blackwood Lane, Portmarnock, which, since Monday, June 18, has been the location of an unauthorised development under the Planning Development Act 2000 (as amended) have made contact with Fingal County Council following the serving of an Enforcement Notice.

“The Enforcement Notice requires the various owners of this land to take action, including the removal of all unauthorised development, and

return the site to its original condition.

“Fingal County Council is currently assessing the owners’ proposals to ensure adherence with the Enforcement Notice but reserves the right to rely on the options available to it under the Act which may result in the matter being pursued through the Courts.”

However by Tuesday evening, the camp had not been cleared and the council said it would consider further action, including pursuing the issue through the courts, if the notice was not complied with.

The land is zoned GB or Green Belt in the County Development Plan and the presence of dozens of caravans and mobile homes constitutes unauthorised development.

The pop-up church, complete with giant tent and portaloos, has attracted hundreds of Born-Again travellers who have gathered every day since their arrival for morning prayers and evening gospel.

The field has been maintained in pristine condition since the convoy arrived, and rubbish has been neatly bagged and piled in a corner at the perimeter of the field until a skip which has been ordered arrives.

The leader of the church, French missionary pastor Oliver Riva, said that the Life and Life Church had full permission to be in the field and had “paid rent”.

He added: “I spread the Gospel among the traveller people. We have had good results, many of them have converted. The fighting and drinking has finished completely. Their lives have changed, and now they pray to Jesus Christ, and work for Jesus Christ.”

He said the group would be in the field for two weeks and would then move on to another area to continue spreading the good word.

The field is privately owned by four individuals and the council indicates it has been in touch with one of the owners.

Gardaí appeal for witnesses GARDAI have renewed their appeal for information about a suspected hit and run in Swords as they investigate whether the victim had already been knocked down by another vehicle.

Latvian Ilmars Zorge, 35, was killed on the Rathbeale Road outside Swords along a row of cottages known as the 12 Apostles in the early hours of Sunday.

Mr Zorge had been at an after-work get together on Saturday night and was walking home afterwards when the incident happened.

Sources say a motorist driving the Rathbeale Road from Swords towards

Ashbourne swerved to avoid something on the road at around 1.30am and pulled in, followed by a second vehicle.

But as they tried to warn another oncoming car, a dark coloured saloon, hit the man lying in the roadway and drove off in the direction of Ashbourne.

Mr Zorge had been working in Monsport tomato growing business on the Swords to Ashbourne road and had only been in the country three months.

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Swords Garda Station on 01 666 4700.

A SWORDS Councillor has suggested that the garda station be moved to Lissenhall to make use of the M1 and R132 links and better serve Donabate and Portrane.

Court hears details of violent case A MAN charged with the violent rape of an American tourist in a west Dublin park allegedly threatened that she would be “cut into little pieces”, a court heard.

A court sitting last Friday was told the man said: “Do what you’re told or I’ll kill you” during the alleged incident in the early hours of Wednesday June 20.

Judge David McHugh also heard that the victim was left with a cut to her vagina and her attacker attempted to strangle her with her own scarf.

BusterBox to fly the flag for Fingal A COMPANY which had to change its brand name after being hit with a legal warning from a company owned by Warner Bros will fly the flag for Fingal at the National Ploughing Championships.

Baldoyle-based BusterBox, which featured on RTE’s Dragon’s Den in April 2017, will demonstrate its doggie treat service at the mammoth event in September.

The start-up was forced to change its name from ScoobyBox after Warner Bros subsidiary Hanna-Barbera Productions claimed infringement. But it will spread its message in the Local Enterprise Village at Europe’s largest outdoor event.

The company, which was set up by Liam Brennan, Paul Carrick and Gary Redmond in 2016, is a subscription service for dog owners, sending a box of fun, exciting toys and healthy treats to thousands of subscribers in Ireland and the UK. Anna May McHugh, National Ploughing Association managing director, said: “This is a unique opportunity for these small businesses, with 291,500 visitors in attendance last year, to showcase their companies to the large number of visitors that Ploughing attracts.”

The 87th Annual National Ploughing Championships take place from September 18th to 20th at Screggan, Tullamore, County Offaly. Blanchardstown dresses for success WOMEN from Blanchardstown got suited and booted last week as they took part in a Dress for Success Dublin (DfSD) professional styling and suiting workshop.

DfSD is a charity founded by clothing designer, entrepreneur and campaigner Sonya Lennon with a mission to promote women’s participation in the workforce.

Jobseekers were given professional clothing and styling advice and received an interview-appropriate outfit, as well as career development workshops.

A GROUP of artists has created a path of health at Connolly Hospital, by opening the first permanent art gallery on the wards of the Blanchardstown medical campus.

The artists, known as Connolly Collective, teamed up with the Blanchardstown Hospital Society for the project which aims to establish a more creative and artist environment for patients, staff and visitors.

The gallery at the Elm/ Maple ward is accompa-

nied by a memorial to the women transferred from Magdalene Laundries and other institutions to work as domestic staff in the hospital laundry and kitchen when it opened in 1955.

The sculpture, entitled Embedded Memories, is by Mette Sophie Roche who heard the stories of the women from long-term staff at the hospital.

Mette told Dublin Gazette: “They no longer work at the hospital and many of them have passed away I expect.

“They worked in the kitchen and the laundry

and some lived within the hospital for decades. This sculpture is a monument to those brave women.

“The materials used, discarded hospital bed linen, already had a powerful value related to their use, but also, in this context, to who handled them.

“To remake the memory of these women, the sculptural processes involved trying to re-enact their working history - in the washing, rolling, stretching, ironing and folding of bed linen.

Working in teams of four, they spent five weeks researching the issue of water sustainability and exploring innovative ways to preserve it. THE failure of Fingal County Council to include a question about a closed public right-of-way in Donabate has been described as “extraordinary” by a community group.

Supporting Proper Development in Donabate (SPDD) had asked Cllr Paul Mulville to submit a question about the pathway at the June area meeting. However officials later told him that the question was omitted in error from the agenda.

The right of way at Ballisk Common is used by children on their way to all three primary schools on the peninsula and the community college.

According to SPDD, it has been closed for more than eight months despite its retention being a condition of planning permission for housing on the site.

The closure of the pathway forms part of a formal complaint made by SPDD made to Fingal County Council, which has been forwarded to Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

SPDD said it was unacceptable that Fingal County Council has not been more proactive on the issue, adding that the failure to include the question from Cllr Mulville was unacceptable.

SHITZU: RECUE DOG IS A BIG HIT

ADOPTED doggie Donnie has punters at Keelings pub in Donabate eating out of his hand – or is that the other way around?

The adorable Shitzu was taken in by bar manager Stephen Kelly last week and he’s already become part of the furniture.

The handsome pooch was even spied in the beer tent at Flavours of Fingal at the weekend for what his new owner described as his “first day on the job”.

Stephen told Dublin Gazette: “He was spotted wandering around the village last week and got hit by a car. He had no collar and hadn’t been chipped.”

Staff at Paddy Powers took the dog in for safekeeping and once Stephen realised he was looking for a home, he was smitten.

He said: “Clare who

works for me has two dogs and a young son so she took him home overnight to see what his temperament was like.

“He was fine so I took him home the next day to my five kids. They were delighted and named him Donnie because he was found in Donabate.”

Pet Stop in Airside spruced the dog up after reading about him on Facebook and Stephen got him checked over at the vet, where he got a clean bill of health.

He said: “He’s gorgeous.

He’s been in the pub with me most mornings and not a bother on him. The customers love him. Every pub needs a good mascot.”

But can he pull a pint yet?

“No, not quite,” says Stephen. “He seems to be well trained and fully house trained, but not quite to that level.”

DIVERSION

Dublin Bus Routes Through Swords To Be Diverted DU B L I N B U S ro u te s through Swords are set to be diverted for the next three weeks as water main replacement works continue.

The Forrest Road reopened to traffic on Sunday but there is no left-turn onto Main Street at the Lord Mayor’s pub until July 15. The northbound lane between that junction and the garda station is also closed with a one-way system in place.

Route 41c/x to Swords Manor will divert from the Forrest Road right onto the Dublin Road, left on to R132, left on to Malahide Road to Main Street and back on to normal route.

Route 102 to Sutton will divert from Forrest Road right onto Dublin Road, left onto R132, left on to Malahide Road, around Pavilions roundabout to Malahide Road and back onto normal route.

Route 33/a to Balbriggan/Skerries will divert from Pinnock Hill straight on R132, left onto Malahide Road to Main Street and back onto normal route.

Stage 2 of works from the Malahide Road junction (Garda Station) to Bridge Street (Swords Castle) will close from Monday July 16 to Sunday August 5.

FAST FOOD: APPLICATION FOR DRIVE THROUGH RESTAURANT IN SKERRIES

THE Irish Heart Foundation has thrown its weight behind a campaign to block a fast-food drive-through restaurant from opening directly opposite a school in Skerries.

Almost 100 people

attended a public meeting last week to voice their opposition to the proposed development

by Marbleside Ltd at Skerries Point shopping centre.

The meeting was held at Skerries Educate Together NS, just yards from the site, and was

addressed by Kathryn Reilly, policy manager for the Irish Heart Foundation.

She said: “The Irish Heart Foundation fully supports the introduction of no-fry zones. A body of research links proximity to fast-food outlets and obesity.

“It is inappropriate to continue to address the issue of new fast food outlets beside schools on a case-by-case basis at local level.

“A co-ordinated, national approach to protect the health of children and young people across the country is required. There needs to be national level guidance for all local authorities on the introduction of no-fry zones adjacent to schools.”

The meeting was attended by Sinn Fein’s health spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD and party colleague Cllr Malachy Quinn.

Cllr Tom O’Leary (FG) told Dublin Gazette: “Skerries residents are worried about a whopper 6,000sqft fast food unit – that’s around six times the size of Jimmy’s local takeaway nearby.

“I am very concerned

that this proposal has no safe access and egress for pedestrians, customers, elderly, persons with disabilities and mams and dads trying to control excited children.

“A narrow busy road, which is the main bottleneck access to the main shopping centre car park, is also the proposed exit for the drive-through restaurant.

“There are zero, none, nada car spaces on-site at this restaurant. How is someone in a wheelchair supposed to negotiate safe access? It’s a mad proposal.”

Green party representative Joe O’Brien, who is also a member of the school’s parent teacher association, said: “It was clear from the attendance tonight that there is a groundswell of opposition to this proposal on a variety of reasons.

Top Honour For Balbriggan Teacher BALBRIGGAN teacher Cecelia Gavigan has been named Teacher of the Year at the annual Our World Irish Aid Awards. Cecelia has been teaching at Balbriggan Educate Together NS since graduating from St Patrick’s College (now DCU Institute of Education). The award recognises the effort she has put into teaching her pupils about the important work of charity Irish Aid, as reflected in the quality of her class group’s submission. The project, entitled Raising Awareness and Taking Action on the Global Goals, explored responsible consumption and production through work n plastic and fast fashion, as well as climate action, focusing on two countries – Uganda and Vietnam. The students wrote a press release, produced a video and staged a puppet show to spread their message.

Fingal also scooped one of two other awards announced at Dublin Castle – Scoil Choilm Community NS in Clonsilla won Best Newcomer.

HE sun beamed down on Newbridge House and Gardens last weekend as families from throughout Fingal and beyond decended on this year’s Flavours of Fingal County Show.

As with previous years the weekend was a massive hit.

There was something for everyone, young and old, with vintage cars, food, crafts, music and a petting zoo to name just a few.

The flagship event in the Fingal entertainment was a massive success again and we’re already looking forward to next year.

MANGE: DSPCA TO INVESTIGATE WORST CASE IN 7 YEARS

THE DSPCA is investigating what it describes as “the worst case of mange seen in seven years” after taking in two dogs abandoned outside the Fingal pound.

The dogs, a Labrador and a German Shepherd, were found tied up outside Ashtown pound and were in such poor health that staff had to notify the DSPCA. Vets reported that the five-year-old Lab Ivy had

an extreme case of mange, open wounds on her legs caused by pressure sores, untreated abscesses and a heart murmur.

The neglected animal is limping from an old injury and the untreated mange – a skin disease caused by parasites causing severe itching and hair loss – has left her almost bald.

The German Shepherd also has a bad case of mange and a number of open sores but the DSPCA

vet team said she is generally in good health.

A fundraising page entitled Help Ivy & Duke Back to Health has been set up on Facebook which tells readers the dogs are now “safe after months of neglect”.

It adds: “We named this little soul Ivy. She was in such a horrific condition that we were unable to identify what breed she was and only when we checked her microchip

did we discover she was a black Labrador.

“Ivy has the sweetest nature, her tail never stops wagging [despite] the pain and suffering from a horrendous case of mange, massive growth on her shoulder, puncture wounds all over her body and legs, heart murmur and arthritis.

“Duke has also been checked over by our veterinary team, he also has

sores all over his body, is slightly underweight and with a milder case of mange. Both these dogs will be under veterinary care for a number of weeks and possibly months.”

An investigation into the case is currently under

way and the DSPCA has asked that anyone with information get in touch so that those responsible can be prosecuted.

Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to email inspectors@dspca.ie.

Interactive Learning For Local Students MORE than 120 pupils from Ladyswell Mulhuddart, Scoil Mhuire in Blakestown, and St Patrick’s in Corduff visited the ITB campus last week for an interactive science show.

The one-day event was hosted in conjunction with W5 Belfast and the Irish Dogs Trust. W5 discovery centre aims to help students visualise difficult concepts and theories through fun methods.

Dogs Trust were on hand to teach the children about responsible dog ownership – from dog welfare needs to how to be safe around them.

This event follows closely on the heels of four very successful computing camps aimed specifically at second level students which attracted almost 300 students over five days.

FAIRY TRAIL: LATEST ATTRACTION AT MALAHIDE CASTLE MAKES A LITTLE GIRL’S DAY

A REAL-LIFE fairy princessm, Hannah May Carroll, had a magical time as she opened a new tourist attraction at Malahide Castle and Gardens on Saturday.

The seven-year-old, who has a serious heart defect, took ‘dress up’ to a new level for her dream come true as she performed her duties at the new Fairy Trail.

Hannah May, along with her parents Robert and Laura and her fouryear-old brother Ryan were treated like royalty thanks to local businesses in the seaside town.

Fulfilling a wish she made with the Share a Dream Foundation, she and her family travelled from Athlone to Malahide for her big day.

They enjoyed dinner at The Scotch Bonnet, after a generous

shopping spree and a trip on the famous Toots train, before an overnight stay at The Grand Hotel.

On Saturday she was transformed fairy godmother style courtesy of Aileen’s Hair & Beauty Mischief and the family enjoyed lunch in Avoca before the trail was opened to visitors.

The fairy trail on the west lawn is now a permanent fixture which will be open year-round. Visitors will be given the fairy trail activity booklet and invited to explore to their hearts’ content.

Hannah May was born with a lifethreatening heart condition and has had six major surgeries to date.

When she was just two, doctors discovered she had a hole in her heart and she underwent comple x open-heart surgery to replace her failing aorta with a cow’s vein.

Hannah May’s proud dad Robert said: “She made this wish when she won a Share a Dream award a few years ago but she wasn’t well enough at the time to avail of it.

“She’s princess mad, always dressing up. This is something she’s been looking forward to for a long time and it’s a very special weekend for all of us.”

Shay Kinsella of the Share a Dream Foundation said: “For special angels like Hannah May we move heaven and earth to make their fondest dreams come true.

Bus Corridors Project report published THE NATIONAL Transport Authority has published its Core Bus Corridors Project report which is bidding to carry commuters from Swords to the city centre in just 40 minutes.

The €2 billion project to re-

duce journey times on Dublin bus routes includes plans to reduce the current journey time from 71 minutes to little more than half that time.

According to the NTA, without the creation of 230km of continu-

ous bus corridors journey times for the Swords route will lengthen to 80 minutes.

If implemented it will mean 16 radial bus lanes will shave up to 50 per cent off journey times for commuters.

HE National Gallery of Ireland was named the Top ‘Free to Enter’ Tourist Attractions in Ireland in 2017 surpassing the one million mark for the very first time. This June celebrates the first anniversary of its reopening to the public.

Founded in 1854 the doors opened to the public in 1864, the National Gallery of Ireland boasts some 2,500 paintings and approximately 10,000 other works. With the perfect setting in the heart of the city centre, the Merrion Square location offers a pleasurable and free day out to all. There is also plenty on offer to keep the kids happy.

THE COURTYARD CREATED by architects Heneghan Peng as part of the refurbishment project of the historic wings of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Courtyard is flooded with light and is a public orientation space that sits between the 1864 Dargan wing and 1903 Milltown wing on Merrion Square.

A sculpture commissioned by the Office of Public Works stands glorious in the Courtyard. The Magnus Modus is a large scale, seven-metre-tall, free-form sculpture by Irish designer, Joseph Walsh. It is made of multiple layers of laminated olive ash wood.

It is stunningly engineered and acts as a focal point around which visitors will circulate.

Resting upon a small Kilkenny limestone base, Magnus Modus delineates space in its slender aspect, stationed on a tiny footprint, reaching upwards and then outwards. As the sculpture ascends, it becomes lighter and reacts to subtle changes in atmosphere.

It creates surrounding spaces, shadows and delicate lines of movement, thereby transforming the viewer into an actor by its responsive presence.

THE CAFE & BRAND NEW ‘THURSDAY LATES’ WALKING around a gallery can make you quite hungry and there’s plenty of delicious treats at the Gallery’s Cafe.

Located in the Millennium Wing, the hugely popular chain Brambles supplies the cafe’s offerings which is cooked freshly every day.

Their brand-new terrace is a fantastic edition to the gallery, opened when the Irish weather permits! Pure bliss on a summer’s day with tea, coffee, lemonade, alcoholic beverages, pastries, salads, sandwiches or even a cheeky prosecco on offer.

The exhibition forms part of the UK and Ireland-wide celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the original circus, established by Philip Astley in London in 1768.

THE Vikings TV series, based in Ashford, Co. Wicklow, is coming back to film another season in the coming weeks and once again, they will be looking to employ thousands of film extras in the coming months.

Producers are holding a couple of open casting day on Saturday, June 30 in The Complex, Little Mary Street, Dublin 7 between 9am and 5.30pm.

It is paid work and the open casting/ application days are open to all adults, with filming to commence in July.

Dyspraxia group to host innovative talks ahead of new pilot programme DYSPRAXIA/DCD Ireland have announced a number of events will be held this summer in preparation for a new educational model, due to be piloted in Irish schools from September.

On July 3 and 4, globally recognised researcher, Professor Cheryl Missiuna travels to Dublin to discuss the ‘Partnering For Change’ (P4C) programme, which was established in Canada in 2013.

‘Partnering for Change’ is an innovative model which provides rehabilitation services in schools for children with special needs, including developmental coordination disorder. Known as P4C in Canada, the

programme has resulted in positive outcomes for children, families, educators, OTs and the healthcare and education systems.

As a similar programme is being piloted in Irish schools from September, Professor Missiuna, a founding member of P4C, will provide insights to Irish audiences on the programme’s implementation.

The events take place in the Ashling Hotel, Parkgate Street on Tuesday July 3 from 7.30pm-9.30pm and Wednesday July 4 from 10am-12pm. Tickets for each event are priced at €25.

THE 13th annual Laya Healthcare’s City Spectacular returns to Merrion Square next week, with a spectacular line-up of street performers set to dazzle the crowds.

The festival runs over three days and showcases the best in international street performance, the world’s leading living statue artists, free family activities, delicious street food from around the world as well as a pet area with charity partner the DSPCA. Speaking about this

year’s City Spectacular, Festival Director Shell Holden said: “Celebrating 13 spectacular years, the festival will be brought to life with new programming additions and a terrific international buskers line-up.

Where there’s a will, there’s a lot still to consider TODAY, I propose to address some of the most common questions that I come across in relation to administering an estate.

What exactly is ‘probate’? Probate is the legal term for the process of proving a will.

Taking out a grant of probate is the process of establishing the validity of a will to the satisfaction of the Probate Office, which is the office charged with the task of issuing all grants of probate and administration.

Is it always necessary to take out probate? As a general rule, if the bank account or accounts in relation to a deceased person, contain less than €25,000 and there is no real estate, such as land or houses, the bank will release the monies to the next-of-kin on condition that an indemnity is provided; in that case, no grant of probate or administration is required.

Banks differ on the amount that they will release without production of a grant.

What about nominations? Is it necessary to extract probate in the case of a nomination? In many instances, the holder of an account or investment can nominate the person who will become entitled to the proceeds of that account or investment on their death.

Provided that a valid nomination form has been completed, the funds will

generally be paid out to the person named as the beneficiary under that nomination, without the production of a grant.

What happens in the case of property that is jointly owned? Where a person owns property jointly with another, the most important question is whether that ownership is on the basis of joint tenancy or tenancy-incommon. The difference is highly significant.

A surviving joint tenant will, in the absence of exceptional circumstances, on the death of the other joint-tenant become automatically entitled to full ownership of the asset in question, regardless of the provisions of the deceased joint tenant’s will.

Joint tenancy normally applies in the case of property owned by married couples. Most commonly, this helps ensure that on the death of one, the property will automatically and conveniently pass to the survivor without the necessity of taking out a Grant of Probate.

On the other hand, when one tenant-in-common dies, there is no automatic right of ownership in favour of the surviving tenant-in-common.

Instead, the share of the deceased tenant-incommon will pass either under the terms of their will, or to their next-of-kin in the event of intestacy.

How long does this

probate/administration take? There is a duty on the executor to administer the estate as is reasonably practicable.

Under Section 62 of the Succession Act 1965, the estate of a deceased person must be distributed as soon as is reasonably practicable after the date of death.

Beneficiaries under a will cannot demand that the estate be distributed until one year has passed from the date of death.

In reality, the time taken will depend on the size and nature of the assets in the estate – for example, if the estate contains multiple properties at home and abroad, there are likely to be inevitable legal delays.

In addition, where there are a large number of beneficiaries, it can also take time to secure the necessary information from them, such as their PPS numbers and details of any prior gifts and inheritances taken by them.

The executor will also need to obtain clearance from the Department of Social Protection and the Revenue Commissioners before the estate can be distributed.

Once the relevant grant is issued, the executor or administrator distributes the estate. This may involve selling shares and property, or vesting title in beneficiaries’ names, both of which have the potential to be lengthy processes.

Broadcaster to walk Camino De Santiago for a great cause REBECCA RYAN

BROADCASTER and Dublin walking enthusiast, Aengus MacGrianna, wants you to make every step count for end-of-life and bereavement care this September by walking the Camino de Santiago in aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF).

This year’s IHF Camino takes place from September 9th-15th taking in the most famous Camino route, the French Way. Starting in Sarria, the route stretches 112 km, winding through the beautiful Galician landscape dotted with charming villages, hamlets and towns and finishes in the historic city of Santiago de Compostela.

“Death and bereavement hits every town and village across Ireland,” MacGrianna says, “I’ve seen how end-of-life care helps people live their last days with dignity, so I’m delighted to support the Irish Hospice Foundation.”

pants who took part on the inaugural IHF Camino last year. She said that she really learned from the experience.

Kila: Thirty Years of Worldly Experimentation  JAMES HENDICOTT

THERE’S a vibrant intensity to Kíla in person that you quickly get the sense reflects their extreme passion for what they do. It’s best summed up in the closing seconds of our interview.

“One more thing for this, before you go,” frontman Ronan O’Snodaigh says as we finish up our chat in Dublin’s Library Bar on a quiet Thursday afternoon. “If you’re going to write about us, write about what we are now. If we’re not good enough for that, we don’t deserve to be written about at all.”

Let’s touch on that particular message first.

Alive Beo - Kíla’s latest release, recorded during the band’s 2016 tour - is breathless, seamlessly diverse, fresh, freewheeling, spontaneous and a great advert for their show. It’s the album of a band at the peak of their powers. They didn’t tell me to say that.

It’s hard to tell if O’Snodaigh is particularly proud of the Dublin world music act’s newest output, or simply sick of features on Kíla that largely harp back to their roots in the early 90s. The band are happy to reference their huge body of work - they’ll be doing so in their 30 year celebratory mini-festival, Féile Kíla, at the end of the year - but also feel they’ve come a long way since the days of hit 90s release Tóg É Go Bog É.

“Colm [O’Snodaigh, Ronan’s brother and fellow band member] just loves trying new stuff.

Lots of it. You might use it once, on one thing. It does help as a musician if you just pick something up and make a noise on it, though. It’s amazing what you learn from that.”

Colm and the band’s ‘crap’ is said to have included things like a Tibetan nose flute and Mongolian camel fiddles.

For a band often loosely linked to the Irish trad scene, the band’s music veers wildly away from that traditional, incorporating those instruments

into a beautiful rhythmic cacophony of vibrant sound.

The band’s influences are incredibly broad.

“Anything you grab can give a different idea,” O’Snodaigh explains.

“We go through phases, then we just mislay things after a while. We used to bring three big African djembe drums, two guitars each and an amp on tour. We didn’t realise at the time what an unnecessary nightmare it was, but they all contributed to the sound. We’ve isolated what’s needed for tours now. We were guilty of musical tourettes syndrome.”

“The books, the poetry, it’s all output,” Hogan adds, referencing the band’s incredibly variety of artistic creations. “You feel compelled to do it.

Maybe it is tourettes.” He points at O’Snodaigh and

laughs. “He goes to the toilet and an album pops out.”

“It has to be music,” O’Snodaigh explains.

“If it wasn’t it would be something else. It was football for a while growing up. It could have been drugs, or gambling.”

Thankfully for all of us, it wasn’t.

Kíla play Groove Festival at Kilruddery House, Bray, County Wicklow on Sunday July 8, where they will be joined by The Stunning, Heather Small and Ham Sandwich.

Not making many waves in the crime caper genre GEORGE Clooney and pals are well and truly out of the picture in this one – suave heistmeister Danny Ocean is dead, for starters, but his jailbird sister Debbie has plans for her own big score to pull off – if she can get the right crew together ... It’s been a while since we’ve seen a good heist movie, and it looks like we’ll be waiting a little longer, as Ocean’s 8 (Cert 12A, 110 mins) is fine, rather than fresh. Still, it’s all female-lead cast are decent enough, despite one rather unfortunate Oirish accent ...

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM Dino-ugh, already - give us something new!

AS WE all know by now, it’s hard to go wrong with dinosaurs – as movie stars, that is, as the dinos at the heart of Jurassic World (Cert 12A, 128 mins) soon go very, very wrong indeed once they’ve been rescued from their exploding island home.

As nobody wants to see Jurassic World: Peaceful Park, the ensuing mayhem is fun enough, but at this stage it’s hard not to feel that we’ve finally seen pretty much everything dinosaurs can do. Maybe the next one can give them guns. In space.

BOOK CLUB

Comes with 50 shades of excrutiating gags SOME glamorous grannies start reading the 50 Shades books, and decide they’d like some of the sexy, sexy times too with the silver-haired foxes in their lives. Yeesh. That’s the premise of Book Club (Cert 15A, 104 mins), which digs up a whole bunch of (ahem) mature actors and actresses, uses every bit of lighting and camera trickery known to man to de-age them, and starts lobbing in predictable gags about seniors’ sex drives. It’s all as wonderful and entertaining as that all sounds.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

Not the most stellar of origins stories WIDELY regarded as the Star Wars film that nobody was asking for, Solo: A Star Wars Story (Cert 12A, 135 mins) is now officially a flop – the first in the Star Wars multiverse. If you’ve ever wanted to see all about the misadventures of a young Han Solo (how he got his name and reputation, how he won the Millennium Falcon etc), you’re in luck. However, it lacks classic Star Wars magic, its lead looks nothing like Harrison Ford, and it just feels like a cynical cash-in on the august franchise’s name.

One such title is Hereditary (Cert 16, 127 mins), a film you may have seen being particularly heavily advertised, and creating a real buzz for people looking for more than ‘just’ dinosaurs.

At heart, it’s a highconcept horror with heavy psychological u n d e r t o n e s, w h i c h , sticking with the dinosaur theme just another moment longer, is another interesting addition to a genre which had almost gone extinct, but which has evolved down unexpected paths in recent years with the likes of the excellent It Follows, and Get Out, to name but two films.

Zombies and beasties are pretty passe at this stage – although there’s always a place for those in horror’s pantheon – as some of the best horror films of recent years have been those diving into the darkness at the heart of relationships and familial ties.

Add in a dash (or a dollop) of the supernatural and seances, and you h ave h e av i l y hy p e d Hereditary.

Toni Collette impresses in Hereditary

family, with her miniature-modelmaker daughter Annie (Toni Collette) trying to come to terms with the loss, while keeping her own family on an even keel.

That’s a challenge in itself – daughter Charlie (an unnervingly excellent Milly Shapiro), son Peter (Alex Wolff) and dull husband, Steve (Gabriel Byrne) are all slightly odd, and grandma’s passing is a trigger for some more crises.

The old dame may be dead ... but that’s not to say that Death has left the family, as events take ever stranger turns for the worse.

It would be spoiling things to reveal what the trailers heavily hint at – that Annie’s mother is dead, but that doesn’t mean she’s not still influencing the family, as increasingly bizarre (and grisly) events play out, ratcheting up the tension.

Much of the film’s emotional weight falls on Toni Collette’s shoulders – a task she ably meets.

She’s given a lot to work with here, although it’s a tricky line she has to walk between conveying a woman dealing with seemingly supernatural events and intense grief, and being at the heart of emotional scenes that are, perhaps, slightly overcooked at times.

Still, Hereditary’s histrionics are fair enough

– the film crams in a lot to deal with as it relentlessly turns the screws on the family.

It certainly throws a lot at Annie and the kids, while also playing with the idea of the increasing horrors they face being hereditary, fate, or even, perhaps, just caused by their own actions.

With the likes of the always excellent Ann Dowd in a supporting role, first-time writerdirector Ari Aster has crafted a creepily effective modern horror, which can’t quite avoid ticking some standard horror tropes off its checklist, yet remains a confident, assured debut.

Overall, you’ll also be impressed by Toni Collette, with a performance and character that’s perhaps as striking as, say, Essie Davis’s increasingly fraught mum in the singular, The Babadook.

When Hereditary rarely strays into almost formulaic horror territory, Toni yanks everything back to Shrieksville with her particularly intense, focused performance.

Lastly, what might you get if you crossed the dinosaurs of Jurass i c Wo r l d w i t h t h e malevolent matriarch f ro m He re d i ta r y? A Dyouthinkshesaurus, of course. That’s me gone fishin’, folks ...

Verdict: 7/10

The best burger in Leinster revealed LEINSTER’S Best Burgers have been revealed and you won’t have to stray too far from home to get your hand on a juicy award-winning burger.

To celebrate Ireland’s first ever National Burger Day, which took place last Thursday, almost 17,000 Irish burger enthusiasts cast their vote for the most mouth-watering burger in the country among 500 burger outlets.

Among the Dublin winners, Silvios won Best Burger at an Independent Chain. Best national burger at a Restaurant went to Thunder Road Café, and best burger in a Convenience/Forecourt went to Burger King at Applegreen in Dublin.

The overall win-

ner was The Hungry Moose in Kilkenny who was awarded the Best Burger in Ireland.

Young workers go hungry to pay rent A new study has found that young workers in Ireland go without food in order to make their rent.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions carried out a survey on 1,500 members under the age of 34.

It found that over half of all young workers had to borrow or sacrifice another basic need like food, heating or transport to pay for their rent or mortgage in the past year.

46% of people felt frustrated that they’re still living in their parents’ house or felt they are trapped renting. While a startling 74% have little or no confidence in being able to buy a home in the future.

Congress General Secretary, Patricia King said the findings are “worse than feared”.

“Lives are being damaged and destroyed and a whole generation of young workers are now feeling alarming levels of frustration, insecurity and despondency with their housing situation. We are failing badly our young people.

“Congress will use these stark findings to continue to put pressure on Government to take action through our ongoing housing campaign and in the upcoming social dialogue with ministers and employers,” said Ms King.

THE HOTTEST new outdoor terrace has just launched in the heart of the city.

Located at the National Gallery of Ireland on Merrion Square, it is the perfect setting for a summer’s day.

The new coffee dock is run by the Irish coffee company Warbler & Wren. Hand roasted in Dublin they are the guardians of great coffee from bean to cup.

Popular chain Brambles supplies the food offerings that are cooked freshly every day.

Dublin Gazette caught up with the Manager of the Gallery Cafe Angi Crispe (33) who has been running it since January. She told us more about what’s on offer at the new terrace cafe.

“It’s a lovely spot with an amazing view right in the middle of the city centre.

“You can get a lovely crisp cold glass of prosecco, or a lemonade, or of course the amazing Warbler & Wren coffee.

“We do all our gorgeous baked goods here every morning and then we do a lovely takeaway offering for lunch with our homemade salads and sandwiches.

“We keep the pastries and

cakes topped up all day because we’re quite famous for our baked goods which are all made fresh every day.”

There are also vegan and gluten free options, and almond and coconut milk is available.

The Gallery Cafe is in great hands with Angi. She grew up in the Barossa Valley in South Australia where her parents owned a bar in the wine making region.

She was always surrounded by food and drink which gave her a “passion for customer service.”

Angi has been living in Monkstown for the last 13 years and told us she has seen the coffee culture grow here in the last few years.

She said: “When I came to Dublin 13 years ago I wouldn’t have ordered a flat white, because nobody would’ve known what it was. It has really developed since.

The standard has risen.”

As soon as you walk into the Gallery Cafe there is a bright and friendly atmosphere where you are greeted with a smile.

There is a wonderful mix of staff and volunteers at the Gallery and Angi told us between her staff they speak 11 languages, which comes in very handy with tourists visiting from all over the world!

Speaking of the staff, Angi said: “We’re like a big family, everybody comes in and works so hard and they’re so passionate. It’s such a wonderful team of people and what a building to work in!”

Angi clearly has a passion for people and customer service. Her motto is wanting every visitor to feel like they got a “hug” before they left.

The terrace cafe opens from 10.30am weather dependent, however if the heaven’s open you can pop indoors and enjoy the Gallery Cafes in the Millennium Wing.

To celebrate the opening of the terrace, the Gallery has launched the exciting ‘Thursday Lates’ which is the perfect afterwork evening entertainment or a sneaky tipple on a Thursday night.

Marking Summer Solstice, the event started June 21 and will take place on selected Thursdays in 2018 from 4.30pm to 8.30pm.

You can enjoy food, drinks and lawn games in the forecourt of the Gallery’s Merrion Square entrance, as well as a special outdoor performances throughout the evening.

customised nail art inspired by the Gallery’s latest exhibition Circus250: Art of the Show.

For art-lovers, there is also two guided tours at 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

She said: “We’ll be bringing in additional furniture and blankets and cushions.

“There’ll be lawn games, Connect Four, Giant Jenga – it’s going to be great fun!

“We’re trying to really attract a young crowd by opening up the gallery in a way you might not have seen it before.

“While all the exhibition spaces will still be open, there’ll be live music, performances, interactive tours.

“We’ll [also] be doing speciality cocktails to theme with what exhibition is going on. It’s a really good place to be on a Thursday evening!

“Come along! Try Warbler & Wren coffee, it’s absolutely delicious. Experience sitting out on Merrion Square in front of one of the most beautiful buildings in the city centre.”

Planting the seeds on new community initiative

CELEBRITY Architect and RTE star Dermot Bannon, along with over 450 Bank of Ireland volunteers, tackled 200 gardens in Dublin, Cork and Galway recently as part of a community initiative with Age Action.

Now in its second year, the Bank of Ireland Backyard Blitz matches employees with older members of the community whose gardens are in need of a summer tidy-up and find these jobs hard to tackle by themselves.

Discussing the initiative, Dermot Bannon said: “The Bank of Ireland

Backyard Blitz initiative is a fantastic way to support communities and I am very proud to be involved.

“As an architect, I know from experience that once a space looks well are more inclined to use,

it and enjoy it.

“Strong communities are built on strong community spirit and this initiative from Age Action and Bank of Ireland will make a real impact for those involved.”

One of the gardens that benefited from an expert makeover was the Seán O’Casey Community Centre Garden in East Wall.

The Centre provides a space for members of the 5,000-strong community in the area, 70% of which are aged over 65.

With Dermot Bannon’s design expertise, Bank of Ireland volunteers refurbished the garden, add-

ing a patio area, pergola, beautiful plants and a mural to brighten up the area for all the residents of the community.

The internship, which is run by the Honourable James Murray Lynn and The Brehon Law Society, allows students travel over to the USA for five weeks and work in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas where they are each assigned their own personal judge to act as their mentor.

The students get to sit in on real life court cases in the Family, Federal, Civil and Criminal courts and learn about how to US justice system operates.

A s we l l a s l e a r n ing about life in the US court, the students are also taken on a variety of trips including visiting a police station, a fire fighter department, going on a ride along with some of the local police officers and a marine boat tour.

They also get to meet members of the SWAT

and K9 departments as well as visiting some of the state prisons.

The internship is available to all students of the Law Faculty at Griffith College and to get chosen they have to go through a rigorous interview process.

How workers may thwart the growth of ‘dark tech’

YOU couldn’t turn on a social media channel or open a website last week without finding international outrage over the plight of families – not just ‘illegal aliens’ and ‘criminals’, but families – being detained and torn apart along the US border.

The disturbing scenes (including video, photo and audio clips) of caged, distressed children and minors prompted a great deal of concern in the tech world, too, with the top heads of triple-A companies ranging from Apple to Facebook weighing in on a situation they commonly referred to as “inhumane”.

Why the weighty response from top tech heads?

Because tech firms have long had lucrative associations with policing, security and border issues all over the world, with the rise of ‘dark tech’ – everything from bog-standard server support through to advanced drone tech sporting facial recognition technologies – increasingly providing a nice little financial and research sideline for many such firms to make use of.

Microsoft – to choose but one tech company drawn into the border outrage – was reported to be facing plenty of internal unease over its association with ICE, America’s border patrol agency.

With last week’s sights inflaming public and political opinion around the world, Microsoft employees have reportedly been threatening to quit, with reports of internal message boards blasting the tech titan’s work with ICE – an internal rebellion that MS was quick to attempt to dampen down, and to engage with staff concerns.

Notwithstanding the company’s close to $20m contract with ICE for

One thing has become clear: tech companies are beginning to find that their employees themselves pose as

much a threat to future projects as any external factors, with internal human concerns beginning to chuck spanners into what had seemed like unstoppable international corporations.

For example, Microsoft et al must have surely noted how an internal staff rebellion at Google recently put paid to Project Maven – an AI contract with the Pentagon to support its drone strike programme.

However, facing an internal revolt by huge numbers of Google staff over developing any war-related tech, Maven was axed, with a number of other controversial projects at other leading tech firms also facing internal dissent and questionable futures.

With the tech world suddenly crashing into some global uncertainties, these unsettling incidents are underscoring that human beings, and our emotions and concerns, continue to prove a check and balance in perhaps preventing ‘dark tech’ from being created, or at least from easily advancing along as it might otherwise do.

people won’t have noticed that YouTube is currently fighting a ruling that could have a drastic impact on how it works.

An Austrian court ruling earlier this month found YouTube is responsible for copyright breaches of content it hosts, rejecting its defence of just being a (media) host provider.

With a four-week window to consider the court’s rulings, which are not yet legally binding, it’s unclear what happens next, with an appeal also currently open to the global giant.

However, with time swiftly running out before the next step in the ruling, a legally-binding ruling against YouTube (and by ‘legal osmosis’, similar media providers, like Facebook) are likely to force a drastic adjustment in how YouTube operates here in Europe, and what content can be accessed.

That’s scaremongering, a little – but just a little, as it’s very early days in what’s already being regarded, with horror, as rulings that will strangle the internet’s openess. We’ll see ...

From a thirsty Audi RS4, I changed over last week to a super-efficient, all-electric Renault Kangoo van, to bring me right up to date with electric car and van technology. The change in culture was more than obvious, taking aside the fact that I moved from a luxury sports car to a basic and practical white van.

itself is marginally heavier as adding vehicle weight takes away from payload.

In every other sense, the van dimensions are similar. This makes the Kangoo ZE a practical city van option if it can suit your delivery needs.

The final and important part of the electric van difference is the running cost.

Renault claims that a full overnight charge for the Kangoo will cost €4 at the electric meter and give a range of 270km.

Compare that with the entry level Kangoo diesel van with a range of over 1,000km from its 60 litre

capacity fuel tank which will cost in the region of €80 and if your van application suits, the electric ve rs i o n w i n s h a n d s down.

Prices start at €28,190 which is €12,000 more than the entry level diesel van and that price difference is the one of the obvious reasons why van buyers are dashing to make the electric move.

In this case it’s not the economy, stupid, it’s the entry cost that’s putting off small business city van drivers.

That will have to change.

This new model gives Toyota a line-up of 8 hybrid models.

This new 2.5-litre hybrid electric drive claims a combination of fuel efficiency and low emissions and quiet operation with more power and greater responsiveness. The car is built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform which claims greater driving dynamics. Toyota claims that the car’s driving dynamics have been specifically tuned for the European market.

The exterior design is more modern looking and Toyota claims that the car combines with superb levels of on-board comfort and roominess. Prices have not yet been released.

This Camry is the 8th generation of a car that has won countless awards and distinctions since it first went on sale in 1982. The model is sold in more than 100 countries globally, with sales totalling over 19 million units to date. With annual sales of more than 700,000 units globally, Camry remains the best-selling D/E-segment saloon in the world.

Kia launches its third generation Ceed model KIA launched its third generation Ceed model to the Irish market and the new range cars will be available here from August.

The Ceed has changed its name from c’eed to Ceed and with the change there is a brand new third generation range of cars.

The new Ceed has a fresh design with a host of new features and a starting price of €22,695. Kia retains its 7 year, 100,000km warranty on the new Ceed models.

For the new Ceed Kia now offers ‘level two autonomous driving’ Lane Following Assist technology and a comprehensive range of advanced driver assistance systems.

There are new engines

available for this latest Ceed, including a new 140bhp 1.4litre T-GDi petrol engine and a new and efficient 1.6 litre diesel engine.

The new Ceed five-door hatchback is 20mm wider and 23mm lower than the outgoing model.

Its wheelbase remains the same while the front overhang shortened by 20mm and rear overhang extended by 20mm.

Kia claims that the Ceed Sportswagon, estate version features a longer cargo area and rear overhang.

The new Ceed has been designed, developed and engineered in Frankfurt by Kia’s European design, product development and R&D teams.

ARTHUR Lanigan-O’Keeffe went one better than his girlfriend 24 hours earlier as he won a historic first UIPM Pentathlon World Cup Final medal for Ireland in Kazakhstan last weekend.

The Donnybrook-based athlete and partner Natalya Coyle won gold in the mixed relay two years in a row but neither had come home with an individual medal until Saturday – despite Coyle’s best efforts in finishing fourth in the women’s final on Friday.

Lanigan-O’Keeffe, 26, was European individual champion in 2015 and won a brilliant gold at Pentathlon World Cup Sofia last month, but this was arguably his finest day as a solo pentathlete.

The Pentathlon World Cup Final is third in terms of prestige to the Pentathlon World Championships and

the Olympic Games, where LaniganO’Keeffe managed top-10 finishes at London 2012 and Rio 2016.

This time, the only thing separating him from gold was a brilliant Korean duo – Jung Jinhwa won a dominant gold and Jun Woongtae kept the Irish charge at bay to secure silver.

Lanigan-O’Keeffe admitted that the sandy running track had made life difficult for the group of athletes locked in an intense battle for podium places during the decisive LaserRun event in Astana.

He said: “It was a very tough course and the sand was deep in places. On the last two laps, everyone around me was feeling it and it was a real battle of guts.

“Anything can happen in LaserRun and you never know if the leader will keep his head, so I never gave up hope of gold, but Jung was the best man today.

“I just kept chasing everyone who was in front of me, and I managed to get past the Russian [Alexander Lifanov] but I couldn’t quite catch the second-placed Korean. They have a great team.”

Lanigan-O’Keeffe had performed consistently throughout the final, finishing seventh in fencing with a

tally of 20 wins and 14 defeats, second in swimming with a 200m freestyle time of 2mins 01.91secs and top of the standings in horse riding after an immaculate clear round.

Lanigan-O’Keeffe and Coyle now adjust their focus to the European Championships in Hungary from July.

DUBLIN manager Jim Gavin says Stephen Cluxton will be fit and ready when the Super 8s kick off next month after he missed Sunday’s Leinster Championship final win over Laois.

Cluxton had been named in the starting line-up but was a late withdrawal after failing to recover from a rib injury that forced him to be replaced during the semi-final with Longford.

The 36-year-old was expected to miss a month following a late challenge from Longford’s James McGivney, but was deemed fit enough to be named in the starting 15 just two weeks later.

A f lare-up of the injury meant he missed a championship game for the first time in 14 years.

uty Evan Comerford, who performed well as Dublin secured an eighth successive provincial title with an easy 1-25 to 0-10 win.

Gavin moved quickly, however, to reassure fans that number one Cluxton will return between the sticks raring to go come July 14.

He said: “Stephen had declared himself fit during the week and we had to give a team in so we were going to give him every chance.

“Ultimately it comes down to the management team to make that call, what’s best for the player and for the team.

“I thought Evan was exceptional. It’s something we are not surprised with because he is playing so well in our games in training, so hats off to him.”

Gavin was surprised to see John Small sent off 12 minutes from time for an alleged slap on Laois’s Evan O’Carroll.

it was just a clumsy challenge,” said Gavin. “I don’t think there was anything malicious in what John did.

“Maybe the linesman said something to the referee, I’m not too sure, but I was surprised he was sent off.”

Gavin feels there’s improvement in the side yet, as they left a number of points on the field during an evenly-contested first half, before pulling away in the second.

“Overall, I’m happy with the performance. In the first half Laois played really well and our boys created a lot of scoring chances but just didn’t convert.

“But the positive thing at half-time was we were just a little bit clunky but creating lots of goal chances, lots of chances for points, just didn’t take them.

“The contrast was we were quite clinical in the second half.

“I think our first wide was after the 26th minute of the second half.”

Gavin was mildly critical of the experimental Super 8s format, which sees the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland scrapped in favour of two groups of four.

The four provincial winners – Dublin, Kerry, Galway and Donegal – will be joined by the winners of next week’s qualifiers.

“On the isle, there’s probably 24 other teams looking in going: ‘That’s a nice party, it would be nice to be part of it.’

“I don’t know what the leadership of the GAA’s vision is for the end of this.

“Obviously, a lot of teams will have finished their championship by mid-July.

“I’m not going to make too much of it now, it’s something to reflect upon post-season.

From a Dublin perspective, we’re just going to focus in on the three games we will have and try and do our very best in each of those games individually.”

UCD Waves were denied a first league victory in two months as Cork City’s Katie McCarthy struck late to cancel out Leanne Payne’s secondhalf opener.

The home side led for just 15 minutes at Jackson Park, but they dominated the game from the start and, with more clinical finishing, would have already been out of sight when McCarthy struck.

In the end, it was Waves who were hanging on as injury time approached, and goalke e p e r E r i ca Tu r n e r pulled off a couple of top-class saves to earn the Students a point.

This was UCD’s last game at the Stepaside

venue before relocating to the UCD Bowl while the Jackson Park pitch is relayed, and the need for a fresh surface was plain to see.

The hard, dehydrated ground wasn’t ideal for the fluid, passing style UC D a re l o o k i n g to implement, but they had some joy early on with captain Chloe Mustaki the pivot in midfield.

Dearbhaile Beirne – shifted inside to the number 10 role from her usual position on the wing – looked UCD’s most lively attacking outlet during a subdued first half.

She created the first clear chance as she beat two players down the left and crossed low for Kerri Letmon, who turned the ball goalward, forcing Eve Badana to make a fine low save at her near post.

Another incisive run and cross from Beirne set Letmon up once m o re, b u t t h i s t i m e Maggie Duncliffe had tracked the run and she made a strong block.

“We’ve Walking Football, explains the club’s Carina O’Brien. “We have a programme for people with early dementia and memory loss which is called Football Memories, Double Club which is a numeracy programme for third and fourth class primary school children, Run The Club is one that our partners, Vi-Ability in Wales, have been running as a programme and we plan on adapting it here to run for transition year students - it’s everything about the football industry, everything that happens off the pitch, and another one called App for Mobile Health that is targeted at third & fourth class children to design an app.”

The initiative is supported by the European Regional Development Fund via the Ireland Wales cooperation programme.

GARRETT Dodrill is targetting immediate promotion back to LSL Sunday Senior 1 with ‘sleeping giant’ Verona after signing on as the Blanch side’s manager for the new season.

The Dubliner had a distinguished career in the Leinster Senior League with Ashtown Villa and Phoenix but has cut his teeth in management with St Patrick’s Athletic and Drogheda United.

Dodrill will continue in charge of Drogheda’s Under-19s in tandem with his position at Verona, and hopes to use his experience in the underage leagues to restore Verona to their rightful place.

“The expectation will be to go and challenge at the top of the league,”

Dodrill told the Dublin Gazette.

“They’re a bit of a sleeping giant, Verona.

I’ll be hoping to go in and bring a few players in with me from League of Ireland Under-19s that are finished playing at that level.

“Hopefully we’ll get them in playing a decent standard of football and get the club promoted.”

Player-manager Declan O’Brien recently stepped down after one year in charge of the Blanch club following their relegation from Sunday Senior 1, citing time constraints.

Like O’Brien, Dodrill is steeped in the St Patrick’s Athletic tradition of positive, passing football, and he’ll look to bring that ethos into his new position.

“I’ll be coming in looking to do what I’ve been doing with Pats and with Drogheda, looking to get

it down and play. We’ll just see where we go.

“I’m not sure what players are staying and not staying. I’ll only see that when I come back in pre-season, which starts on July 5 and see what way everyone is going.”

In his roles with Pats and Drogheda, as well as the DDSL Kennedy Cup sides, Dodrill has overseen a number of players who have gone on to success in the League of Ireland and the UK.

He coached former Lucan United youth Conor Masterson, who was recently promoted to Liverpool’s first team Mo re re c e n t l y, h e coached a St Patrick’s Athletic Under-19 side containing Tallaght’s Fuad Sule, who has since signed for Barnet, and current Dundalk midfielder Jamie McGrath.

“I’ll be bringing in fresh ideas, but I’ll also hopefully be bringing in some fresh players.

“Hopefully we can get the boys there who want to play to keep playing, and it’s my job to help them improve.

“That will come from the lot of years’ experience I’ve had at the schoolboy level, working with players. “ I ’ve wo r ke d w i t h a number of players who’ve gone on to England and a lot of lads w h o ’v e m a d e t h e i r first-team debut in the League of Ireland.”

White wins maiden medal

BALBRIGGAN’S Chikoyo White (a dialysis patient) won a single medals in the petanque competition at the European Transplant Games at the beautiful Poetta Beach setting in Cagliari, Italy.

White was contesting her first competition and was delighted with her silver medal. She went on to scoop a bronze with team mate Aoife Murray, from Clonsilla, in the doubles.

Murray said of the experience: “I’m having a ball here at the championships. I’m over the moon with this medal in Petanque singles.

“Being a team Ireland member is like being part of a lovely family where everyone looks out for everyone else.

“Special mention to Team Captain Harry Ward and Team Manager Colin White.

“It’s great to share the games experience with my mam, Mags, who has travelled here with me.”

IRISH Olympic silver medalist, double world cross country champion and Irish marathon record holder, John Treacy, teamed up with local running group Porterstown Panthers at a recent training session.

Over a hundred runners and walkers joined the running legend for a 5k training session in the Phoenix Park. Tracey shared some of his expert running tips and did a rapid fire question and answers session before the 5k run got under way.

Speaking to the Porterstown Panthers, Treacy said: “You are an example to everyone in Ireland. When I am driving my car and I pass runners or people out walking, I’m delighted because it means that the message has filtered through that we need to invest in our health and wellbeing.

“But even more than that, this kind of a group is really what life is all about; having those social interactions, having great friends and having that connection with running.

“I always had great friendships all through my life, whether I was at the highest level of my sport and we had great craic and that’s what running is really all about.”

Speaking about the event, Porterstown Panthers founder Larry Healy from Castleknock said: “It was great to see such a huge turnout for this special occasion.

“To have an Olympic silver medalist and Irish marathon record holder here running with us and sharing his wise words is such an honour. I, like many people here, have followed John’s running career since he was double world cross country champion in the late 1970s to 1984 when he took silver at the summer Olympics in LA. “I know that we have all come away feeling inspired and motivated to keep running, to look after ourselves and enjoy the friendships we have made along the way.”

Porterstown Panther coach, Sally Downing said: “Larry and I set up Porterstown Panthers in 2017 to provide free running support to local people living in Dublin 15.

“Porterstown Panthers has been going from strength to strength, with many runners going on to complete 10k races, half marathons and the marathons.

“I think one of the reasons for this success is that we have a good mix of people coming each week and strong friendships have developed.

There is always plenty of chatting and laughter when we go running.

“Porterstown Panthers is free and open to people of all ages and abilities. We meet each Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm, meeting at Farmleigh Gate. We also encourage participants to attend Porterstown parkrun each Saturday at 9.30am, which is a free weekly, timed run.”

Healy also took the opportunity to present Treacy, who is also a board member of Concern Worldwide, with a cheque for €1,000 made out to Concern Worldwide.

GORMANSTON Park played host to the first ever Pro Series Indoor Showdown last weekend as the South African concept came to Ireland this year.

The event saw 18 teams from across the island take part at three age groups with two sides from the North Dublin Knights drawing in players from all around the north county.

It was the culmination of six

weeks of indoor hockey training in the regional sections along with top class clinics and challenge matches against the other regional sides.

The Showdown itself saw the Knights take on their fellow franchises over two days at Gormanston in a carnival atmosphere with three pitches running concurrently.

There were numerous side events including an inflatable obstacle course, giant jenga, inflatable target practice and constant music throughout.

The majority of players stayed residentially. On Saturday, there was also an All-Star game which brought World Cup winners Sjoerd de Wert and Bjorn Kellerman over from the Netherlands while

the team of the tournament won the right to represent Ireland in Cape Town later this year at their PSI event. The hope is Ireland will become the hub for similar events for teams across Europe.

Our car park project is underway. The work is scheduled to take 10 weeks.

There is no access whatsoever to the work area. Anybody found on the area will be a trespasser. Access to complex, dressing rooms and all weather pitch is via footpath. Access to grass pitches is via the camogie pitch, with parking on the camogie pitch.

Congratulations to our AFL 7 team who won their Parson Cup semi-final and to the junior hurlers who had a fine championship win over St Pats Donabate.

Well done to Paddy Andrews and all in the Dublin senior football team on winning the Leinster senior championship. Best of luck to Noelle Healy, Ciara Trant and Deirdre Murphy as they face Westmeath in the TG4 LGFA Leinster Final in Carlow on Sunday.

St Finians GAA Club will be hosting the Dublin Camogie Advanced Camp (aged 12 to 17) with the Dublin senior and junior camogie stars from Monday, July 16 to Wednesday, July 18 which is a great honour for the club and recognition of how healthy camogie structures are within the club. With one win from the previous three rounds in round robin series, Castleknock knew they needed a strong start against the Palmerstown men and use their home advantage.

AN app to help players tailor their training and nutrition during their menstrual cycle could provide that “one per cent” critical difference that top ladies football stars are now chasing in their bid to win an All-Ireland.

That was the reaction from some of the country’s top stars when their governing body, the LGFA, formed a partnership yesterday (Wednesday) with the app developers Orreco, which will give all their players free access to the groundbreaking FitrWoman app.

The players personally confirmed Orreco’s international research, which has found that more than half of woman are embarrassed by their period and almost

75% of women aged 16-24 stop playing sport during it.

TG4 All-Ireland winner Noelle Healy revealed that two Dublin clubs have changed from white to navy shorts in order to help their players feel less selfconscious about it.

“Foxrock-Cabinteely were the first club I know that did it,” said Healy, the 2017 Senior Players’ Player of the Year.

“They found that periods, and an awkwardness about them, was one of the reason some of their girls had stopped playing. They made the change a good few years ago and my own club, St Brigid’s, did it last year.”

Periods have been described as the last taboo in women’s sport with even professional athletes reluctant to talk about their effect in training or during big com-

petitions.

Healy explained that she has often seen teammates so badly affected that they’ve had to come off in big games.

“This app is a good way of tracking your period but there’s also so much useful information in it,” she said.

“It shows that you’ll benefit from certain types of training at certain points of your cycle and what foods to eat as well.

You lose a lot of iron which can massively affect your performance in training or a match.”

Galway’s Tracey Leonard, a nurse by profession, said the app will make women “much more aware of when they can best perform during their menstrual cycle and will also help with injury prevention.

“As women become more aware of what they can and cannot do around their

period it will have a very positive effect,” added Leonard.

“Every game we go out now is a big game. The standards in women’s intercounty football have gone so high that teams are constantly looking to getting that ‘extra one per cent’. I think this app is one of those ‘one per cents’ that they can now add to their training.

“This app will also help players to have that conversation with their team managers and trainers,” she added. “I think there will be massive interest in it, even at club level.”

Orreco, founded in Ireland in 2010, has put two decades of research into the FitrWoman app which is designed to give women a competitive edge during their period by tailoring their training and nutrition to their hormonal changes during it.

ALL-IRELAND champions Cork proved too strong for Dublin at Pairc ui Rinn as they fell to a 4-15 to 2-3 defeat in Group 2.

After a slow start, Dublin egded themselves back into the game with a goal from Orla Beagan and finely struck points from Emma Flanagan, Siobhán Kehoe, and Eimear McCarthy.

After 20 minutes Ali Twomey was Introduced for Alex Griffin and made her mark immediately.

Roisin Baker was glued to experienced defender Gemma O’Connor and took her completely out of the game much to Dublin’s delight.

But Cork pounced for a second goal and they duly pulled away in the second half.

With Cork players like Orla Cronin scoring 1-5 and a Katrina Mackey adding another 1-3 to the score line it made Dublin’s effort to come back into the game unlikely.

There was a moment of magic when the young Beegan scored a magnificent goal from a free which skimmed along the surface,, unstoppable for keeper Aoife Murray.

But the Rebels were always in cruise control and got their win.
