Ross ‘shattered’ over Stepaside station claims A FORMER Minister for Justice has blasted the Minister for Transport for using Stepaside Garda Station for electoral gain.  REBECCA RYAN

FORMER Justice Minister and Fine Gael TD for Dublin South, Alan Shatter told Dublin Gazette he believes that candidates are using the station for “self-serving fake political campaigns.”

“I think people in Stepaside were grievously misled at the last election by a variety of candidates who promised if they were elected the garda station would be re-opened,” said Mr Shatter.

“The person at the head of that charge was Shane Ross TD. Promises to re-open it was also made by Mary White, who was then running for Fianna Fail, and also Josepha Madigan who was my own colleague.

“I think good people were seriously misled by a fabricated narrative for electoral gain. Shane Ross was the lead fiction writer of fabricated narrative.”

Mr Shatter said that promises made to re-open the station was a “false promise” and “simply fake selfserving news,” which he believes is still happening.

FRUSTRATED locals at Rosemount Estate in Dundrum are holding protests over health and safety concerns in their estate.

There is currently a building site in the middle of the estate developing 44 news social housing units to replace the former Rosemount flats.

The residents said that construction traffic is causing the roads and paths to be impassable for the elderly, disabled, parents with buggies and emergency vehicles.

Another issue they said they are facing is that their bins have not been collected in Rosemount Glade in two months, due to access issues which is causing a rat and rodent infestation.

Last week the Rosemount Residents Asso-

ciation (RTRA) and local counc illors attended a meeting with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council (DLRCC) aiming to resolve the issues.

T.D. for Dublin Rathdown and Deputy Leader of the Green Party, Catherine Martin was there and told Dublin Gazette the residents are reaching “breaking point” and that a “joined-up” response from the council is needed to address the residents’ “serious health and safety concerns.”

“I have met with residents and have been on site with them in Rosemount. Myself and Green Party Councillor Karen Furlong made numerous representations to the Council, including seeking that the Council adopt an interdepartmental approach to the issues fac-

ing residents. As a result of that, I was invited to attend last week’s special meeting.

“At that meeting I spoke of the residents’ real and justified concerns and how a co-ordinated and joinedup response is needed from the Council as a matter of priority.

“There are serious health and safety issues and there can be no more delays in addressing these concerns, as residents have had enough of promises of action. They need to see action now,” said Deputy Martin.

On the Rosemount Residents Association Facebook group, it was reported that the fire brigade had recently tried to reach houses in Rosemount Glade and had access issues, and in a separate incident a child was “nearly struck by a lorry

mounting the path.”

The group also recently reported that a wheelchair had to leave the footpath due to “serious damage caused by construction vehicles” and the person was “narrowly missed being hit by a cement truck.”

The protests started on Friday June 22nd and a concerned resident, who wishes to stay anonymous, told Dublin Gazette that the residents did not want it to come to a protest, but they will continue until they have their

“demands met” by the council.

“It’s really unfortunate, we really don’t want to be on the roads. We don’t want to be stopping anybody from getting home, we’re just trying to look out for the residents in our area and trying to make the place a little bit better, that’s all.”

This week he said there is “still no improvements or help” from DLRCC. He said, “the protest is growing in numbers” and the residents are “not stopping until the area is safe.”

Local councillor Grace Tallon (LAB) told Dublin Gazette residents have been “shamefully treated” and deserve to feel safe in their own community.

She said: “I understand from residents that commitments made by the council at the meeting we had in relation to safety on the site have not been kept.

“At the very least residents deserve to feel safe in their own community.

The residents of Rosemount have been shamefully treated for the last 10 plus years and it is incumbent on the council to work with the residents moving forward.”

While Cllr Seamas O’Neill (IND) told us that at the meeting with DLRCC “there was agreement on parking of builders, bin collections, vermin control and road safety measures to be taken as soon as possible.

“Other road issues were referred to the traffic section, where some were rejected and some accepted. Issues with parks and road parking are ongoing.”

A spokesperson for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Counc il told Dublin Gazette: “Staff from Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council met with local residents to discuss their concerns, this was a positive meeting.”

A DU BL I N R AT H DOWN Minister has launched the London Irish Centre’s fundraising campaign with Ed Sheeran and Dermot O’Leary.

Hot on the heels of the sell-out Wembley leg of his tour, Ed Sheeran delivered a rare, intimate performance at The London Irish Centre (LICC) in London last Tuesday.

‘An Evening with Dermot O’Leary’ was hosted by the presenter, and Minister Josepha Madigan was

among those who attended including the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Laura Whitmore, Alan Carr and Courtney Cox. The programme was part of the LICC’s wider fundraising campaign to help further develop its charitable services of supporting venerable Irish communities in London and refurbish its historic Camden-based building.

The fundraising concert saw the newest LICC patron Ed Sheeran perform to an intimate crowd of 400 people. There was

also a host of supporting artists including, Lisa Hannigan, Annie Mac, Sara Cox and Stephen James Smith.

At the event, Minister Josepha Madigan said initiatives like this are important to increase Ireland’s global presence.

She said: “It is timely that the London Irish Centre is embarking on an exciting new phase with plans to develop a space which will respect its traditions, while creating a contemporary world class space reflective of Ire-

land’s creative talents and global reputation.

“Such initiatives form an important part of the Government’s Global Ireland 2025 initiative, which aims to greatly increase Ireland’s global presence and ensure that, although we are small in scale, Ireland’s international engagement will mean that we will ensure our position as an island in the centre of the world,” said Minister Madigan.

help them get their voice heard,” he said.

Dermot O’Leary whose parents Sean and Maria are from Wexford, said he is also extremely proud of his Irish roots. He said: “It’s a big honour for me to be patron of the London Irish Centre Charity.

“I’m very proud of my Irish heritage; my parents were part of the post war generation of immigrants who came to London to find a new life, so the

London Irish community is one that is very close to my heart.”

Director of culture at the London Irish Centre, Gary Dunne said: “The London Irish Centre charity has been providing care, culture and community to the city’s huge Irish population for over 60 years, and this event gave us the opportunity to both raise essential funds and also announce exciting plans for the future.”

A FORMER Minister for Justice has blasted local politicians for using Stepaside Garda Station for electoral gain.

Former Minister for Justice and Fine Gael TD for Dublin South, Alan Shatter told Dublin Gazette he believes that candidates are using the station for “self-serving fake political campaigns”.

“I truthfully advised people that I could not promise that it would be reopened.

“I think good people were seriously misled by a fabricated narrative for electoral gain. Shane Ross was the lead fiction writer of fabricated narrative.”

“I feel generally sorry for the people in Stepaside.

I think there is a fake campaign continuing. I’m aware that various people in Stepaside in recent days have received letters from [Shane] Ross promising that the station opening is imminent.

“I don’t think that people should be misled a second time. I don’t think that Shane Ross should get away going into another election promising that if he was re-elected the station would open.”

Last week marked the one-year anniversary since the Government approved the reopening of six garda stations, including Stepaside. In an email to Stepa-

Following the email, Mr Shatter said: “I am calling on Shane Ross to end this self-serving fake campaign.

I’m calling on current members of the Dail who represent the Dun Laoghire Rathdown area to fess up and deal honestly with the community in Stepaside, and not use this issue anymore for self-serving political gain.

“I think people deserve to be told the truth, they deserve not to be misled.

“I think frankly they’re entitled to an apology from Shane Ross and any other deputy who got elected to the Dail in the last election, who falsely promised that their election would automatically within weeks result in the station re-opening.

“No one, who promised the re-opening of the station, ever suggested that two and a half years later it would remain closed and because of the focus on bricks and water, the necessary focus on increasing community policing and patrolling in Stepaside has been lost.

“People should not be misled by fakery when the next election comes along.”

Dublin Gazette did not receive any comment back from Minister Shane Ross going to print.

MINISTER Josepha Madigan said she is “very disappointed” by personal criticisms by the Archbishop of Dublin.

It comes after she led prayers at her local church in Mount Merrion when the parish priest did not show to say mass.

Minister Madigan did not read the Gospel or consecration because they can only be carried out by ordained priest, however mass goers did receive communion, as there was some pre-blessed bread in the church.

The Dublin Rathdown TD said there is a “shortage of clergy” and she believes the church should be “ordaining women”.

“When I look in the church and I see altar girls, I don’t see female priests.

There is something inherently wrong with that and I would like to see that changed. The church needs to change.”

Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin said Minister Madigan’s comments caused parishioners “considerable distress”.

“Many have contacted my offices to express their hurt and upset at the Minister’s comments.

“There is no shortage of priests in the Archdiocese of Dublin for the celebration of Sunday Mass. It is regrettable that Minister Madigan used this occasion to push a particular agenda.

“She might consider the hurt she has caused to parishioners who deem her actions deeply disrespectful.”

Minister Madigan responded and said the only agenda she is pushing is one of “equality”.

“I feel there should be quality in the church just as I believe there should be equality in all facets of society. If the church is seeking an obvious solution to the shortage of clergy, then ordaining women is the answer,” said Minister Madigan.

Locals to hold protest march over closed road REBECCA RYAN

RATHFARNHAM locals are holding a protest march this Saturday over the Edmondstown Road closure.

The road has been closed since November 2017 after illegal excavation works on lands bordering the road caused the partial collapse of the road.

Locals including residents, businesses, farmers, schools, sports clubs and hikers are calling on the immediate repair and reopening of Edmondstown Road by South Dublin County Council.

A spokeperson for the ‘ Re o p e n E d m o n s t o w n Road Now’ group told Dublin Gazette: “We are at 8 months now and there is

still no sign of a start date for works to begin.

“Ambulances are still having issues getting to accidents above the barrier section (another cyclist last week). The cancellation of the bus route has left the elderly isolated.

“There is increased and intense traffic on the narrow and winding country roads and the haymaking season now has huge farm machinery blocking some roads, as they are just not wide enough.

“People are very frustrated and angry and more than anything it is just dangerous.”

The protest march is being held Saturday June 30th from Edmondstown Road/Scholarstown Road junction at 12noon.

Seminar on historic evolution of area

THIS year, Dublin Garden Squares Day moved to Dun Laoghaire with a half-day seminar in the Lexicon theatre on Friday, June 22.

It featured local and international speakers focusing on the historic evolution of Dun LaoghaireMonkstown within the context of garden square development in Europe.

The seminar was followed by a walking tour of local squares conducted by the environmentalist and author Peter Pearson.

Held annually, Dublin Garden Squares Day is organised by Dublin Civic Trust, an independent charitable organisation that works to recognise, promote and protect the city’s architectural heritage.

Dublin’s squares are a vital part of the city’s fabric; a growing focus for local communities, attractive to tourists, and pleasant areas for Dubliners to live, work and relax.

COURTS: WORKER WHO STOLE FROM SHOP FLOOR OVER A THREE-MONTH PERIOD JAILED

M&S employee stole nearly €25k in cash A MARKS and Spencer employee who stole nearly €25,000 in cash from the shop floor over a threemonth period has been jailed for six months.

John Downes (56) of Belville Court, Johnstown Road, Cabinteely, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to five counts of stealing cash from the store’s Dundrum branch between April and July 2016.

Judge Martina Baxter sentenced Downes to two years’ imprisonment with final 18 months suspended, provided he keep the peace and be of good behaviour on his release.

Garda Michael Lynch told Eoin Lawlor BL, prosecuting, that Downes

started working for Marks and Spencer in November 2014.

On July 7, 2016, a store security guard was watching CCTV footage when he saw Downes, who was working on a till, put a number of cash bills in his pocket. Downes then transferred the money to his sock.

When confronted by the security and the store operations manager, Downes initially denied stealing any cash, before he eventually produced €650 in notes that he had taken from the till. He said it was his first time stealing from the store.

He was suspended on full pay pending an investigation. Gardaí investigat-

ing the case found Downes was driving a BMW car with a 152 registration plate. They also discovered €950 in cash in his bedroom, which he admitted he had taken from the store.

When interviewed by gardaí, Downes made full admissions to stealing the cash over a period of time. He told them he was in a considerable amount of debt due to the breakdown of his marriage and

the closure of his printing business.

The total amount stolen was €24,650. Downes took the money on 54 separate occasions.

He said he was severely depressed and struggling to make ends meet, Gda Lynch said. Downes also apologised for his actions and said he was “ashamed and remorseful”.

He told gardaí: “I’ve never been in trouble before” and that it was a “few moments of madness”. He has since repaid the money to the store.

also had to move out of the family home following the breakdown of his marriage.

He had a number of outstanding debts, including rent and management fees. Because he had been self-employed, he had trouble accessing social welfare support. He does not have a private pension.

Mr Neville said his client was extremely remorseful for his actions and had gone to great efforts to ensure he repaid his former employer. The court heard the BMW he was driving had been leased and he no longer has it.

BleeperBike is Ireland’s first stationless bike sharing scheme

LOCALS are being asked to have their say on the regulation of Stationless Bikes. The council are proposing to introduce bye-laws and are looking for your views on them.

Stationless bike-sharing schemes work by requesting that users download an application on their Smart phone, which allows them to become members of the service, to locate the bikes and to unlock nearby bikes by scanning the QR code on each bike.

Once you arrive at your destination, you can park at any cycle parking stand near your destination and lock it manually. This scheme removes the need to develop and construct expensive and often inconvenient docking stations associated with traditional bike share schemes.

A pilot stationless bike-sharing scheme started in the county at the end of 2017 in conjunction with an Irish Company Bleeperbike and since its introduction, the numbers of weekly cycling trips have been growing.

The Draft Bye Laws are available for inspection during normal working hours until July 26 2018 at County Hall, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire or Dundrum Office Park, Main Street, Dundrum, Dublin 14.

HOUSANDS of people turned out in Dalkey for the culmination of the Cuala GAA Academy’s 2017/18 season last week. On a beautiful summer morning, families and supporters watched nearly 500 players aged between five and 10 years old march along Dalkey’s Main Street to the club’s Headquarters at Hyde Road. They were led by bagpiper Sean Kelly and escorted by two members of the Garda Mounted Support Unit. DUN LAOGHAIRE: MAN DIES AFTER DROWNING INCIDENT

Public advised on how to stay safe after drowning REBECCA RYAN

A MAN in his 50s died after a drowning incident in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday.

Gardai, Coastguard and emergency services attended the incident at the West Pier at around midday, after the man was found unresponsive in the water by a passerby.

His body was recovered and taken to Loughlinstown mortuary for a post-mortem.

A Garda spokesperson told Dublin Gazette there was “no foul play” and the incident is being treated as a “personal tragedy.”

The news came in the wake of a status yellow high temperature warning for the country.

Irish Water Safety average eleven drownings every month and has issued an alert advising the public on how to stay safe near water.

They advise to: • Swim and stay within your depth • Supervise children closely and do not use inflatable toys in open water • Swim at Designated Bathing Areas where lifeguards are on duty during the bathing season which runs from the 1st of June to the 15th September

DUBLIN Fire Brigade (DFB) are appealing to people to be careful when cooking outside, after they dealt with a “large fire” in Stepaside over the weekend.

Three pumps attended the scene on Sunday where the fire is believed to have started from a barbeque and spread to bushes, fencing and decking of several houses.

DFB said: “Crews prevented the fire from entering the houses” and have advised people to “always have some way of extinguishing a fire” when barbequing.

Local councillor Lettie McCarthy (LAB) is urging people to be careful while cooking outdoors.

“I was so sorry to hear my neighbours had this experience, it was great they got the fire under control so quickly.

“It has served as a reminder how unforgiving fire can be and we will all be taken greater care for the remainder of this beautiful weather,” said Cllr McCarthy.

The fire service has issued an appeal for people to be safe when barbequing.

Their tips are: “Don’t use much lighter fluid, keep the barbeque away from sheds or fences, have a drink but not too many,

don’t barbeque inside or on balconies, keep water or sand nearby, dispose of ash carefully and be careful of children and pets who can be injured by hot barbeques.”

As temperatures soared over the weekend, DFB also tackled a number of gorse fires throughout Dublin.

Firefighters dealt with a blaze near Puck’s Castle/ Barnaslingan area, while three fire engines, a foam tender and a helicopter were deployed to deal with a forest fire near Saggart.

Balbriggan and Swords firefighters also attended scenes where trees and vegetation were on fire.

While firefighters from Swords and Tara Street Stations were at other vegetation fires in Portrane, which was stopped close to bee hives, and two units were sent to Dollymount Strand after a fire broke out there.

DFB are also appealing to motorists to “park sensibly” after fire trucks had difficulty accessing a large forest fire due to “poor parking”.

To help prevent fires in the hills and countryside, DFB advised: “Only [barbeque] in designated areas, take care disposing of cigarettes, don’t throw cigarette butts out of a car window, take your litter home and ring 999/112 if you see a fire immediately.

HE National Gallery of Ireland was named the Top ‘Free to Enter’ Tourist Attractions in Ireland in 2017 surpassing the one million mark for the very first time. This June celebrates the first anniversary of its reopening to the public.

Founded in 1854 the doors opened to the public in 1864, the National Gallery of Ireland boasts some 2,500 paintings and approximately 10,000 other works. With the perfect setting in the heart of the city centre, the Merrion Square location offers a pleasurable and free day out to all. There is also plenty on offer to keep the kids happy.

THE COURTYARD CREATED by architects Heneghan Peng as part of the refurbishment project of the historic wings of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Courtyard is flooded with light and is a public orientation space that sits between the 1864 Dargan wing and 1903 Milltown wing on Merrion Square.

A sculpture commissioned by the Office of Public Works stands glorious in the Courtyard. The Magnus Modus is a large scale, seven-metre-tall, free-form sculpture by Irish designer, Joseph Walsh. It is made of multiple layers of laminated olive ash wood.

It is stunningly engineered and acts as a focal point around which visitors will circulate.

Resting upon a small Kilkenny limestone base, Magnus Modus delineates space in its slender aspect, stationed on a tiny footprint, reaching upwards and then outwards. As the sculpture ascends, it becomes lighter and reacts to subtle changes in atmosphere.

It creates surrounding spaces, shadows and delicate lines of movement, thereby transforming the viewer into an actor by its responsive presence.

THE CAFE & BRAND NEW ‘THURSDAY LATES’ WALKING around a gallery can make you quite hungry and there’s plenty of delicious treats at the Gallery’s Cafe.

Located in the Millennium Wing, the hugely popular chain Brambles supplies the cafe’s offerings which is cooked freshly every day.

THE Vikings TV series, based in Ashford, Co. Wicklow, is coming back to film another season in the coming weeks and once again, they will be looking to employ thousands of film extras in the coming months.

Dyspraxia group to host innovative talks ahead of new pilot programme DYSPRAXIA/DCD Ireland have announced a number of events will be held this summer in preparation for a new educational model, due to be piloted in Irish schools from September.

On July 3 and 4, globally recognised researcher, Professor Cheryl Missiuna travels to Dublin to discuss the ‘Partnering For Change’ (P4C) programme, which was established in Canada in 2013.

‘Partnering for Change’ is an innovative model which provides rehabilitation services in schools for children with special needs, including developmental coordination disorder. Known as P4C in Canada, the

programme has resulted in positive outcomes for children, families, educators, OTs and the healthcare and education systems.

As a similar programme is being piloted in Irish schools from September, Professor Missiuna, a founding member of P4C, will provide insights to Irish audiences on the programme’s implementation.

The events take place in the Ashling Hotel, Parkgate Street on Tuesday July 3 from 7.30pm-9.30pm and Wednesday July 4 from 10am-12pm. Tickets for each event are priced at €25.

Where there’s a will, there’s a lot still to consider TODAY, I propose to address some of the most common questions that I come across in relation to administering an estate.

What exactly is ‘probate’? Probate is the legal term for the process of proving a will.

Taking out a grant of probate is the process of establishing the validity of a will to the satisfaction of the Probate Office, which is the office charged with the task of issuing all grants of probate and administration.

Is it always necessary to take out probate? As a general rule, if the bank account or accounts in relation to a deceased person, contain less than €25,000 and there is no real estate, such as land or houses, the bank will release the monies to the next-of-kin on condition that an indemnity is provided; in that case, no grant of probate or administration is required.

Banks differ on the amount that they will release without production of a grant.

What about nominations? Is it necessary to extract probate in the case of a nomination? In many instances, the holder of an account or investment can nominate the person who will become entitled to the proceeds of that account or investment on their death.

Provided that a valid nomination form has been completed, the funds will

generally be paid out to the person named as the beneficiary under that nomination, without the production of a grant.

What happens in the case of property that is jointly owned? Where a person owns property jointly with another, the most important question is whether that ownership is on the basis of joint tenancy or tenancy-incommon. The difference is highly significant.

A surviving joint tenant will, in the absence of exceptional circumstances, on the death of the other joint-tenant become automatically entitled to full ownership of the asset in question, regardless of the provisions of the deceased joint tenant’s will.

Joint tenancy normally applies in the case of property owned by married couples. Most commonly, this helps ensure that on the death of one, the property will automatically and conveniently pass to the survivor without the necessity of taking out a Grant of Probate.

On the other hand, when one tenant-in-common dies, there is no automatic right of ownership in favour of the surviving tenant-in-common.

Instead, the share of the deceased tenant-incommon will pass either under the terms of their will, or to their next-of-kin in the event of intestacy.

How long does this

probate/administration take? There is a duty on the executor to administer the estate as is reasonably practicable.

Under Section 62 of the Succession Act 1965, the estate of a deceased person must be distributed as soon as is reasonably practicable after the date of death.

Beneficiaries under a will cannot demand that the estate be distributed until one year has passed from the date of death.

In reality, the time taken will depend on the size and nature of the assets in the estate – for example, if the estate contains multiple properties at home and abroad, there are likely to be inevitable legal delays.

In addition, where there are a large number of beneficiaries, it can also take time to secure the necessary information from them, such as their PPS numbers and details of any prior gifts and inheritances taken by them.

The executor will also need to obtain clearance from the Department of Social Protection and the Revenue Commissioners before the estate can be distributed.

Once the relevant grant is issued, the executor or administrator distributes the estate. This may involve selling shares and property, or vesting title in beneficiaries’ names, both of which have the potential to be lengthy processes.

Broadcaster to walk Camino De Santiago for a great cause REBECCA RYAN

BROADCASTER and Dublin walking enthusiast, Aengus MacGrianna, wants you to make every step count for end-of-life and bereavement care this September by walking the Camino de Santiago in aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF).

This year’s IHF Camino takes place from September 9th-15th taking in the most famous Camino route, the French Way. Starting in Sarria, the route stretches 112 km, winding through the beautiful Galician landscape dotted with charming villages, hamlets and towns and finishes in the historic city of Santiago de Compostela.

“Death and bereavement hits every town and village across Ireland,” MacGrianna says, “I’ve seen how end-of-life care helps people live their last days with dignity, so I’m delighted to support the Irish Hospice Foundation.”

Kila: Thirty Years of Worldly Experimentation  JAMES HENDICOTT

THERE’S a vibrant intensity to Kíla in person that you quickly get the sense reflects their extreme passion for what they do. It’s best summed up in the closing seconds of our interview.

“One more thing for this, before you go,” frontman Ronan O’Snodaigh says as we finish up our chat in Dublin’s Library Bar on a quiet Thursday afternoon. “If you’re going to write about us, write about what we are now. If we’re not good enough for that, we don’t deserve to be written about at all.”

Let’s touch on that particular message first.

Alive Beo - Kíla’s latest release, recorded during the band’s 2016 tour - is breathless, seamlessly diverse, fresh, freewheeling, spontaneous and a great advert for their show. It’s the album of a band at the peak of their powers. They didn’t tell me to say that.

It’s hard to tell if O’Snodaigh is particularly proud of the Dublin world music act’s newest output, or simply sick of features on Kíla that largely harp back to their roots in the early 90s. The band are happy to reference their huge body of work - they’ll be doing so in their 30 year celebratory mini-festival, Féile Kíla, at the end of the year - but also feel they’ve come a long way since the days of hit 90s release Tóg É Go Bog É.

Colm and the band’s ‘crap’ is said to have included things like a Tibetan nose flute and Mongolian camel fiddles.

For a band often loosely linked to the Irish trad scene, the band’s music veers wildly away from that traditional, incorporating those instruments

into a beautiful rhythmic cacophony of vibrant sound.

The band’s influences are incredibly broad.

“Anything you grab can give a different idea,” O’Snodaigh explains.

“We go through phases, then we just mislay things after a while. We used to bring three big African djembe drums, two guitars each and an amp on tour. We didn’t realise at the time what an unnecessary nightmare it was, but they all contributed to the sound. We’ve isolated what’s needed for tours now. We were guilty of musical tourettes syndrome.”

“The books, the poetry, it’s all output,” Hogan adds, referencing the band’s incredibly variety of artistic creations. “You feel compelled to do it.

Maybe it is tourettes.” He points at O’Snodaigh and

laughs. “He goes to the toilet and an album pops out.”

“It has to be music,” O’Snodaigh explains.

“If it wasn’t it would be something else. It was football for a while growing up. It could have been drugs, or gambling.”

Thankfully for all of us, it wasn’t.

Not making many waves in the crime caper genre GEORGE Clooney and pals are well and truly out of the picture in this one – suave heistmeister Danny Ocean is dead, for starters, but his jailbird sister Debbie has plans for her own big score to pull off – if she can get the right crew together ... It’s been a while since we’ve seen a good heist movie, and it looks like we’ll be waiting a little longer, as Ocean’s 8 (Cert 12A, 110 mins) is fine, rather than fresh. Still, it’s all female-lead cast are decent enough, despite one rather unfortunate Oirish accent ...

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM Dino-ugh, already - give us something new!

AS WE all know by now, it’s hard to go wrong with dinosaurs – as movie stars, that is, as the dinos at the heart of Jurassic World (Cert 12A, 128 mins) soon go very, very wrong indeed once they’ve been rescued from their exploding island home.

As nobody wants to see Jurassic World: Peaceful Park, the ensuing mayhem is fun enough, but at this stage it’s hard not to feel that we’ve finally seen pretty much everything dinosaurs can do. Maybe the next one can give them guns. In space.

BOOK CLUB

Comes with 50 shades of excrutiating gags SOME glamorous grannies start reading the 50 Shades books, and decide they’d like some of the sexy, sexy times too with the silver-haired foxes in their lives. Yeesh. That’s the premise of Book Club (Cert 15A, 104 mins), which digs up a whole bunch of (ahem) mature actors and actresses, uses every bit of lighting and camera trickery known to man to de-age them, and starts lobbing in predictable gags about seniors’ sex drives. It’s all as wonderful and entertaining as that all sounds.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

Not the most stellar of origins stories WIDELY regarded as the Star Wars film that nobody was asking for, Solo: A Star Wars Story (Cert 12A, 135 mins) is now officially a flop – the first in the Star Wars multiverse. If you’ve ever wanted to see all about the misadventures of a young Han Solo (how he got his name and reputation, how he won the Millennium Falcon etc), you’re in luck. However, it lacks classic Star Wars magic, its lead looks nothing like Harrison Ford, and it just feels like a cynical cash-in on the august franchise’s name.

One such title is Hereditary (Cert 16, 127 mins), a film you may have seen being particularly heavily advertised, and creating a real buzz for people looking for more than ‘just’ dinosaurs.

At heart, it’s a highconcept horror with heavy psychological u n d e r t o n e s, w h i c h , sticking with the dinosaur theme just another moment longer, is another interesting addition to a genre which had almost gone extinct, but which has evolved down unexpected paths in recent years with the likes of the excellent It Follows, and Get Out, to name but two films.

Zombies and beasties are pretty passe at this stage – although there’s always a place for those in horror’s pantheon – as some of the best horror films of recent years have been those diving into the darkness at the heart of relationships and familial ties.

Add in a dash (or a dollop) of the supernatural and seances, and you h ave h e av i l y hy p e d Hereditary.

Toni Collette impresses in Hereditary

family, with her miniature-modelmaker daughter Annie (Toni Collette) trying to come to terms with the loss, while keeping her own family on an even keel.

That’s a challenge in itself – daughter Charlie (an unnervingly excellent Milly Shapiro), son Peter (Alex Wolff) and dull husband, Steve (Gabriel Byrne) are all slightly odd, and grandma’s passing is a trigger for some more crises.

The old dame may be dead ... but that’s not to say that Death has left the family, as events take ever stranger turns for the worse.

It would be spoiling things to reveal what the trailers heavily hint at – that Annie’s mother is dead, but that doesn’t mean she’s not still influencing the family, as increasingly bizarre (and grisly) events play out, ratcheting up the tension.

Much of the film’s emotional weight falls on Toni Collette’s shoulders – a task she ably meets.

She’s given a lot to work with here, although it’s a tricky line she has to walk between conveying a woman dealing with seemingly supernatural events and intense grief, and being at the heart of emotional scenes that are, perhaps, slightly overcooked at times.

Still, Hereditary’s histrionics are fair enough

– the film crams in a lot to deal with as it relentlessly turns the screws on the family.

It certainly throws a lot at Annie and the kids, while also playing with the idea of the increasing horrors they face being hereditary, fate, or even, perhaps, just caused by their own actions.

With the likes of the always excellent Ann Dowd in a supporting role, first-time writerdirector Ari Aster has crafted a creepily effective modern horror, which can’t quite avoid ticking some standard horror tropes off its checklist, yet remains a confident, assured debut.

Overall, you’ll also be impressed by Toni Collette, with a performance and character that’s perhaps as striking as, say, Essie Davis’s increasingly fraught mum in the singular, The Babadook.

When Hereditary rarely strays into almost formulaic horror territory, Toni yanks everything back to Shrieksville with her particularly intense, focused performance.

Lastly, what might you get if you crossed the dinosaurs of Jurass i c Wo r l d w i t h t h e malevolent matriarch f ro m He re d i ta r y? A Dyouthinkshesaurus, of course. That’s me gone fishin’, folks ...

Verdict: 7/10

The best burger in Leinster revealed LEINSTER’S Best Burgers have been revealed and you won’t have to stray too far from home to get your hand on a juicy award-winning burger.

To celebrate Ireland’s first ever National Burger Day, which took place last Thursday, almost 17,000 Irish burger enthusiasts cast their vote for the most mouth-watering burger in the country among 500 burger outlets.

Among the Dublin winners, Silvios won Best Burger at an Independent Chain. Best national burger at a Restaurant went to Thunder Road Café, and best burger in a Convenience/Forecourt went to Burger King at Applegreen in Dublin.

The overall win-

ner was The Hungry Moose in Kilkenny who was awarded the Best Burger in Ireland.

Bláthnaid Ní Fhátharta, Kepak Marketing Director said: “Kepak received thousands of votes on our quest to find the best burger in the land and with so many burger outlets to choose from it was a tough competition for all.

“We send huge congratulations to the winners and want to thank all the burger lovers across the island of Ireland for casting their votes.

Young workers go hungry to pay rent A new study has found that young workers in Ireland go without food in order to make their rent.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions carried out a survey on 1,500 members under the age of 34.

It found that over half of all young workers had to borrow or sacrifice another basic need like food, heating or transport to pay for their rent or mortgage in the past year.

46% of people felt frustrated that they’re still living in their parents’ house or felt they are trapped renting. While a startling 74% have little or no confidence in being able to buy a home in the future.

Congress General Secretary, Patricia King said the findings are “worse than feared”.

“Lives are being damaged and destroyed and a whole generation of young workers are now feeling alarming levels of frustration, insecurity and despondency with their housing situation. We are failing badly our young people.

“Congress will use these stark findings to continue to put pressure on Government to take action through our ongoing housing campaign and in the upcoming social dialogue with ministers and employers,” said Ms King.

National Gallery of Ireland launch new terrace cafe REBECCA RYAN Food Editor

THE HOTTEST new outdoor terrace has just launched in the heart of the city.

Located at the National Gallery of Ireland on Merrion Square, it is the perfect setting for a summer’s day.

The new coffee dock is run by the Irish coffee company Warbler & Wren. Hand roasted in Dublin they are the guardians of great coffee from bean to cup.

Popular chain Brambles supplies the food offerings that are cooked freshly every day.

Dublin Gazette caught up with the Manager of the Gallery Cafe Angi Crispe (33) who has been running it since January. She told us more about what’s on offer at the new terrace cafe.

“It’s a lovely spot with an amazing view right in the middle of the city centre.

“You can get a lovely crisp cold glass of prosecco, or a lemonade, or of course the amazing Warbler & Wren coffee.

“We do all our gorgeous baked goods here every morning and then we do a lovely takeaway offering for lunch with our homemade salads and sandwiches.

“We keep the pastries and

cakes topped up all day because we’re quite famous for our baked goods which are all made fresh every day.”

There are also vegan and gluten free options, and almond and coconut milk is available.

The Gallery Cafe is in great hands with Angi. She grew up in the Barossa Valley in South Australia where her parents owned a bar in the wine making region.

She was always surrounded by food and drink which gave her a “passion for customer service.”

Angi has been living in Monkstown for the last 13 years and told us she has seen the coffee culture grow here in the last few years.

She said: “When I came to Dublin 13 years ago I wouldn’t have ordered a flat white, because nobody would’ve known what it was. It has really developed since.

The standard has risen.”

As soon as you walk into the Gallery Cafe there is a bright and friendly atmosphere where you are greeted with a smile.

There is a wonderful mix of staff and volunteers at the Gallery and Angi told us between her staff they speak 11 languages, which comes in very handy with tourists visiting from all over the world!

Speaking of the staff, Angi said: “We’re like a big family, everybody comes in and works so hard and they’re so passionate. It’s such a wonderful team of people and what a building to work in!”

Angi clearly has a passion for people and customer service. Her motto is wanting every visitor to feel like they got a “hug” before they left.

The terrace cafe opens from 10.30am weather dependent, however if the heaven’s open you can pop indoors and enjoy the Gallery Cafes in the Millennium Wing.

To celebrate the opening of the terrace, the Gallery has launched the exciting ‘Thursday Lates’ which is the perfect afterwork evening entertainment or a sneaky tipple on a Thursday night.

Marking Summer Solstice, the event started June 21 and will take place on selected Thursdays in 2018 from 4.30pm to 8.30pm.

You can enjoy food, drinks and lawn games in the forecourt of the Gallery’s Merrion Square entrance, as well as a special outdoor performances throughout the evening.

customised nail art inspired by the Gallery’s latest exhibition Circus250: Art of the Show.

For art-lovers, there is also two guided tours at 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

Angi describes the new ‘Thursday Lates’ as a “mini festival.”

She said: “We’ll be bringing in additional furniture and blankets and cushions.

“There’ll be lawn games, Connect Four, Giant Jenga – it’s going to be great fun!

“We’re trying to really attract a young crowd by opening up the gallery in a way you might not have seen it before.

“While all the exhibition spaces will still be open, there’ll be live music, performances, interactive tours.

“We’ll [also] be doing speciality cocktails to theme with what exhibition is going on. It’s a really good place to be on a Thursday evening!

“Come along! Try Warbler & Wren coffee, it’s absolutely delicious. Experience sitting out on Merrion Square in front of one of the most beautiful buildings in the city centre.”

Planting the seeds on new community initiative

CELEBRITY Architect and RTE star Dermot Bannon, along with over 450 Bank of Ireland volunteers, tackled 200 gardens in Dublin, Cork and Galway recently as part of a community initiative with Age Action.

Now in its second year, the Bank of Ireland Backyard Blitz matches employees with older members of the community whose gardens are in need of a summer tidy-up and find these jobs hard to tackle by themselves.

Discussing the initiative, Dermot Bannon said: “The Bank of Ireland

Backyard Blitz initiative is a fantastic way to support communities and I am very proud to be involved.

“As an architect, I know from experience that once a space looks well are more inclined to use,

it and enjoy it.

“Strong communities are built on strong community spirit and this initiative from Age Action and Bank of Ireland will make a real impact for those involved.”

One of the gardens that benefited from an expert makeover was the Seán O’Casey Community Centre Garden in East Wall.

The Centre provides a space for members of the 5,000-strong community in the area, 70% of which are aged over 65.

With Dermot Bannon’s design expertise, Bank of Ireland volunteers refurbished the garden, add-

ing a patio area, pergola, beautiful plants and a mural to brighten up the area for all the residents of the community.

Fran Laycock of the East Wall Community Ce n t re s a i d : “ We ’re

with, the Philadelphia internship was an invaluable experience in furthering my education in law. It is a once in a life time opportunity, and I will forever be grateful I got to be a part of it.”

The internship, which is run by the Honourable James Murray Lynn and The Brehon Law Society, allows students travel over to the USA for five weeks and work in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas where they are each assigned their own personal judge to act as their mentor.

The students get to sit in on real life court cases in the Family, Federal, Civil and Criminal courts and learn about how to US justice system operates.

A s we l l a s l e a r n ing about life in the US court, the students are also taken on a variety of trips including visiting a police station, a fire fighter department, going on a ride along with some of the local police officers and a marine boat tour.

They also get to meet members of the SWAT

and K9 departments as well as visiting some of the state prisons.

The internship is available to all students of the Law Faculty at Griffith College and to get chosen they have to go through a rigorous interview process.

Lucky students participate in US internship THE Griffith College Dublin Law Faculty has sent six lucky students on their way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to participate in a summer law internship with some of the top US judges.

The group set off last Wednesday (June 20) and will spend five weeks being mentored by some of the country’s top legal minds.

How workers may thwart the growth of ‘dark tech’

YOU couldn’t turn on a social media channel or open a website last week without finding international outrage over the plight of families – not just ‘illegal aliens’ and ‘criminals’, but families – being detained and torn apart along the US border.

The disturbing scenes (including video, photo and audio clips) of caged, distressed children and minors prompted a great deal of concern in the tech world, too, with the top heads of triple-A companies ranging from Apple to Facebook weighing in on a situation they commonly referred to as “inhumane”.

Why the weighty response from top tech heads?

Because tech firms have long had lucrative associations with policing, security and border issues all over the world, with the rise of ‘dark tech’ – everything from bog-standard server support through to advanced drone tech sporting facial recognition technologies – increasingly providing a nice little financial and research sideline for many such firms to make use of.

Microsoft – to choose but one tech company drawn into the border outrage – was reported to be facing plenty of internal unease over its association with ICE, America’s border patrol agency.

With last week’s sights inflaming public and political opinion around the world, Microsoft employees have reportedly been threatening to quit, with reports of internal message boards blasting the tech titan’s work with ICE – an internal rebellion that MS was quick to attempt to dampen down, and to engage with staff concerns.

Notwithstanding the company’s close to $20m contract with ICE for

I think that what’s happening is inhumane, it needs to stop.”

One thing has become clear: tech companies are beginning to find that their employees themselves pose as

much a threat to future projects as any external factors, with internal human concerns beginning to chuck spanners into what had seemed like unstoppable international corporations.

For example, Microsoft et al must have surely noted how an internal staff rebellion at Google recently put paid to Project Maven – an AI contract with the Pentagon to support its drone strike programme.

However, facing an internal revolt by huge numbers of Google staff over developing any war-related tech, Maven was axed, with a number of other controversial projects at other leading tech firms also facing internal dissent and questionable futures.

With the tech world suddenly crashing into some global uncertainties, these unsettling incidents are underscoring that human beings, and our emotions and concerns, continue to prove a check and balance in perhaps preventing ‘dark tech’ from being created, or at least from easily advancing along as it might otherwise do.

people won’t have noticed that YouTube is currently fighting a ruling that could have a drastic impact on how it works.

An Austrian court ruling earlier this month found YouTube is responsible for copyright breaches of content it hosts, rejecting its defence of just being a (media) host provider.

With a four-week window to consider the court’s rulings, which are not yet legally binding, it’s unclear what happens next, with an appeal also currently open to the global giant.

However, with time swiftly running out before the next step in the ruling, a legally-binding ruling against YouTube (and by ‘legal osmosis’, similar media providers, like Facebook) are likely to force a drastic adjustment in how YouTube operates here in Europe, and what content can be accessed.

That sounds straightforward enough – until you consider how much of what many of us see, do and send online involves content created by others. As an unintended consequence, if you want to, say, forward on family photos to a sibling, have you secured their verified, documented approval to do so, or could this fall foul of Article 11 and 13 laws?

That’s scaremongering, a little – but just a little, as it’s very early days in what’s already being regarded, with horror, as rulings that will strangle the internet’s openess. We’ll see ...

From a thirsty Audi RS4, I changed over last week to a super-efficient, all-electric Renault Kangoo van, to bring me right up to date with electric car and van technology. The change in culture was more than obvious, taking aside the fact that I moved from a luxury sports car to a basic and practical white van.

This is because the van

itself is marginally heavier as adding vehicle weight takes away from payload.

In every other sense, the van dimensions are similar. This makes the Kangoo ZE a practical city van option if it can suit your delivery needs.

The final and important part of the electric van difference is the running cost.

Renault claims that a full overnight charge for the Kangoo will cost €4 at the electric meter and give a range of 270km.

Compare that with the entry level Kangoo diesel van with a range of over 1,000km from its 60 litre

capacity fuel tank which will cost in the region of €80 and if your van application suits, the electric ve rs i o n w i n s h a n d s down.

Prices start at €28,190 which is €12,000 more than the entry level diesel van and that price difference is the one of the obvious reasons why van buyers are dashing to make the electric move.

In this case it’s not the economy, stupid, it’s the entry cost that’s putting off small business city van drivers.

That will have to change.

This new model gives Toyota a line-up of 8 hybrid models.

This new 2.5-litre hybrid electric drive claims a combination of fuel efficiency and low emissions and quiet operation with more power and greater responsiveness. The car is built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform which claims greater driving dynamics. Toyota claims that the car’s driving dynamics have been specifically tuned for the European market.

The exterior design is more modern looking and Toyota claims that the car combines with superb levels of on-board comfort and roominess. Prices have not yet been released.

This Camry is the 8th generation of a car that has won countless awards and distinctions since it first went on sale in 1982. The model is sold in more than 100 countries globally, with sales totalling over 19 million units to date. With annual sales of more than 700,000 units globally, Camry remains the best-selling D/E-segment saloon in the world.

Kia launches its third generation Ceed model KIA launched its third generation Ceed model to the Irish market and the new range cars will be available here from August.

The Ceed has changed its name from c’eed to Ceed and with the change there is a brand new third generation range of cars.

The new Ceed has a fresh design with a host of new features and a starting price of €22,695. Kia retains its 7 year, 100,000km warranty on the new Ceed models.

For the new Ceed Kia now offers ‘level two autonomous driving’ Lane Following Assist technology and a comprehensive range of advanced driver assistance systems.

There are new engines

available for this latest Ceed, including a new 140bhp 1.4litre T-GDi petrol engine and a new and efficient 1.6 litre diesel engine.

The new Ceed five-door hatchback is 20mm wider and 23mm lower than the outgoing model.

Its wheelbase remains the same while the front overhang shortened by 20mm and rear overhang extended by 20mm.

Kia claims that the Ceed Sportswagon, estate version features a longer cargo area and rear overhang.

The new Ceed has been designed, developed and engineered in Frankfurt by Kia’s European design, product development and R&D teams.

Donnybrook LTC celebrates 125th

From historic victories in the Dublin leagues at the turn of the 20th century to young stars making waves on the Grand Slam circuit and the Davis cup in recent times, Donnybrook toasts its successes  JAMES HENDICOTT

DONNYBROOK Tennis Club are all set to celebrate their 125th year, with an open day to be held in honour of the occasion between midday and 4pm on July 8.

The open day will see the club lay on coaches and refreshments, and invite members of the public to make use of the five faux-grass courts for free, as well as answering any tennis and club-related questions.

The club was a hit from its early days, with 147 members signing up within six months of establishment way back in 1893. The founding date, April 10, 1893, makes the club one of the oldest in Ireland. There have been plenty of successes to celebrate over the years.

Most recently, the stand out

player out of Donnybrook has been Georgia Drummy, an 18 year old junior player who’s currently ranked number 38 in the world at ladies’ underage level.

Drummy recently appeared at the French Junior Open and is set to travel to Wimbledon in the coming weeks to compete in for their junior title.

Drummy has had significant success this year, including making the semi-finals in both singles and doubles at the Astrid Bowl in Charleroi, Belgium in late May, losing in the same two finals at Carson (US)’s International Spring Championships, and outright winning Ecuador’s Mundial Juvenil de Tenis back in February.

The club’s early achievements date back to the dawn of the last century and include becoming the first club to win two separate divisions of Dublin League Tennis in the same year (men’s class 2 and men’s class 3, in 1903), and a victory in the inaugural women’s DLT championship in 1910.

World War II presented the first really significant challenge to a by then long-established and numerically strong club, with the ladies playing a key role in keeping things operating as membership numbers declined significantly.

Characters like Heather Boyd and Rita Rutherford became vital, helping Donnybrook take titles on the court, and stay afloat off it.

Things were difficult into the 60s and 70s, too, in particu-

lar financially. The creation of a junior section ultimately proved critical around that time, bringing in a new influx of talent that was to transform the club.

A number of Donnybrook players went on to get honours for Ireland in serious international competition, with Bernadette Davy, Jerry Sheehan and Jim McArdle appearing at the Fed Cup (for women) and the Davis Cup (for men) for their country.

In February 1976, with the facilities in need of a thorough upgrade, permission was granted to lay four hard courts.

The new courts were such a success that only two years later, the remaining three grass courts were also converted, and the club became the new home of the Leinster Harcourt Championship.

As well as Drummy’s s u c c e s s (w h i c h h a s also taken her to the Fed Cup), Donnybrook club members Osgar O’hOisin, John Morrissey, and David O’Hare have all represented Ireland at the Davis Cup in the last five years as the success continued.

The club are keen to emphasise, however, that they cater to all levels of players, from absolute beginners up. They have a thriving junior section, and new facilities allow year-around tennis inside an Airhall.

The 125th anniversary, they hope, will mark another influx of new members on their inspirational journey.

UCD Waves were denied a first league victory in two months as Cork City’s Katie McCarthy struck late to cancel out Leanne Payne’s secondhalf opener.

The home side led for just 15 minutes at Jackson Park, but they dominated the game from the start and, with more clinical finishing, would have already been out of sight when McCarthy struck.

In the end, it was Waves who were hanging on as injury time approached, and goalke e p e r E r i ca Tu r n e r pulled off a couple of top-class saves to earn the Students a point.

This was UCD’s last game at the Stepaside

venue before relocating to the UCD Bowl while the Jackson Park pitch is relayed, and the need for a fresh surface was plain to see.

The hard, dehydrated ground wasn’t ideal for the fluid, passing style UC D a re l o o k i n g to implement, but they had some joy early on with captain Chloe Mustaki the pivot in midfield.

Bohs “More than a Club” project soars BOHEMIANS More than a Club initiative is making a strong impact in their local community with five key programmes in their area taking flight.

“We’ve Walking Football, explains the club’s Carina O’Brien. “We have a programme for people with early dementia and memory loss which is called Football Memories, Double Club which is a numeracy programme for third and fourth class primary school children, Run The Club is one that our partners, Vi-Ability in Wales, have been running as a programme and we plan on adapting it here to run for transition year students - it’s everything about the football industry, everything that happens off the pitch, and another one called App for Mobile Health that is targeted at third & fourth class children to design an app.”

The initiative is supported by the European Regional Development Fund via the Ireland Wales cooperation programme.

Linking in with Bohemians has been vitally important to More Than A Club being able to prosper with facilities, equipment and support provided to O’Brien and her colleague Shane Fox. ”I have to say that the club have been fantastic and any help we want the manager Keith [Long) is brilliant. In the afternoon, the U-8 girls had a football blitz which included Fox-Cab and Thomas Davis in Stonebridge Road.

The U-9 girls were away to Fox-Cab for a blitz.

Our Golf Classic is in Delgany Golf Club this Friday June 29.

THE NATIONAL Yacht Club regatta this weekend – a highlight of the summer calendar – featured a highprofile competitor known more for his achievements in an entirely different arena.

Paul Wallace, a former British and Irish Lions, Leinster, Saracens and Ireland prop forward has always had a love for sailing alongside his passion for rugby.

The man once dubbed ‘the world’s best tight head prop’ has long had a passion for sailing that dates back to his rural Cork upbringing. It has been reignited in recent years as his media duties have mellowed and his weekends returned.

Wallace, who sails regularly with the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire, helped launch Davy’s sponsorship of the

event, which is notoriously competitive between four clubs all based within a stone’s throw of each other on the Dun Laoghaire seafront. Wealth managers Davy will also be sponsoring the 2019 junior regatta at the club.

Former Ireland man Wallace has lost none of his competitiveness. “Of course, I go out there to win in sailing, too” he says.

“It can be very helpful having a big guy on the ropes. The power is definitely useful for me.

“I grew up doing most of my sailing in Cork. I did some instructing and stuff like that before the rugby took over.

“Dublin Bay is great for being so close, and for big boat sailing, which I had to travel to Crosshaven for when I was younger. I do a lot of sailing with the club on Thursday nights, and the set up is excellent here, as are the rivalries.

“It’s not too tidal, and great for racing, and you

can be out and going in about five or ten minutes,” he continues.

It might not seem like a natural jump, going from rigby to sailing but Wallace also sees some important transferable skills. “There are a surprising number of similarities between sailing and rugby. There’s a lot of useful cross-training,” Wallace says.

“There’s the strength, and then also the weight from a ballast point of view. I’m not sure I have

the ideal amount of agility, but I do okay!

“Most of the crews are very experienced sailors so it comes down to small differences, and often to small errors in the races.

It all comes together with the support of the other clubs, we can get a lot of crews out and some really good racing here. It’s the highlight of the season and really big for the club. It’s something to really look forward to.”

Commodore of the

National Yacht Club, Ronan Beirne said of the event: “The Regatta had 150 entries and was the biggest event in the Club for some time.

“To coinc ide with Annalise Murphy’s wonderful achievement in finishing the Volvo Round the World Race in the Hague this weekend, on the yacht ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’, we reduced the amount of plastic used in the Regatta, part of a long-term effort to reduce the use of plastic.”

McCann and Tonosa on form

Hiko Tonosa has dominated the Kia Race Series this year.

THE GLORIOUS weather brought glorious results to Dundrum South Dublin over the weekend.

First up was Luke McCann who ran a personal best (3.44.31) at the BMC Meeting in Loughborough. It has been a great season for Luke, following his win at the Greystones International a month ago.

Hiko Tonosa once again won at the Kia Series of Races, this time over 10k in a time of 30.16. Most of the top distance runners from Ireland were present and for once it was

a very competitive race for Tonosa with the lead group of ten still together for 5k.

It was then that Freddie Situk (Raheny/ Kenya) surged to the front with the DSD man on his heels.

They swapped the lead for the next 4k, when Tonosa strode to the front and maintained a high rhythm to the finish line.

Linda Byrne was first home in the women’s 10 mile race in Enniscorthy and 4th overall, in 62.58. Byrne is returning to top form after two years out of the sport.

Blackrock AC’s Healy sets top Euro time

BLACKROCK AC 17-year-old Sarah Healy continued her astonishing form by setting a new Irish Youth and Under-20 record over 800m at the Belfast International meet this week She ran a time of 2.02.76 to finish second behind compatriot Claire Mooney (2:02.61), a time which leaves her top of the European Under-18 rankings.

She’s part of the Ireland team the travels to the European Under-18 Athletics Championship in Hungary in July.

UCD’S Lena Tice, Deirdre Duke and Katie Mullan and Loreto’s Ali Meeke, Nicci Daly and Hannah Matthews have all been named in the Irish women’s squad for July’s World Cup along with former Monkstown players Chloe Watkins, Anna O’Flanagan and Nikki Evans.

Daly was one of the doubts before Tuesday’s announcement but she will return this week from a stress fracture in her foot, making sure she is part of Ireland’s first World Cup journey since 2002.

And coach Graham Shaw said she could have possibly played last weekend against Germany in a challenge match but they erred on the side of caution, waiting for the series against Japan in Cork to give it an extra few days to heal.

For the coach, though, a slight tweak in the World Cup squad rules means that there is a greater possibility to give players a chance of taking part.

Previously, squads were limited to just 18 players with no facility to bring in replacements. This time around, replacements can be brought in for injured players – assessed and certified by a doctor – during the competition.

“You take a risk with players coming back from injury; that’s natural. We feel they will get through the next few weeks. The format does give you that bit of a comfort blanket if players do have a recurrence that you can bring in players that have been part of the squad.”

Other than this duo, the squad is one of the most experienced ones ever fielded with only Roisin Upton holding under 50 international caps.

Shaw added that it was the toughest selection he has ever had to make, knowing the sacrifices the players have put in to get to

this stage.

“These women give every everything for it, they dedicate their lives to it. They get up early for the gym, train late at night. They also have their lives to deal with. It’s incredibly difficult, something that we put a lot of thought into. We went through everything in depth and unfortunately, these players have

missed out.

The squad will head to Cork for eight days, three games against Japan next Wednesday, Friday and Saturday before playing another couple of games in Dublin against Chile and Italy. Preparations finish with a practice game against South Africa in Lee Valley in London.

LYDIA Boylan took the laurels from the Stephen Roche GP, denying the Scott Orwell Wheelers home favourite Aine Donegan in a superb race in the Meadowmount estate in Dundrum.

Boylan and Donegan made the break about halfway through racing straight after a sprint prime. Donegan stayed with Boylan – a former club member now riding for WNTRotor – for a good few laps.

But then the latter, an Irish inter-

national, put the foot down and broke away with about six laps remaining. She was so strong that she was closing on the pack by the end of the race.

Sundrive’s Susie Mitchell took third place.

In the men’s race, a group of four got away and stayed away for a lot of the race. Alexis Roche, son of Stephen Roche, joined them with about eight laps to go then jumped clear and rode solo to victory for the last three laps or so. It was great to see his grandmother present him with the trophy.

RUGBY Leinster already back in pre-season training LAST week saw the start of pre-season training for the Leinster Rugby squad, just three-and-a-half weeks on from the province’s victory over Scarlets in the Guinness PRO14 Final at Aviva Stadium.

The first group of players, who were the first to receive the new adidas training kit, will train for two weeks before having a break in the middle of July.

Speaking on their return, Leo Cullen discussed the plans for pre-season, the aims for the group in this early period of the summer and the importance of improving for the new campaign.

“It was a reasonably short break,” Cullen told Leinster Rugby TV. “Obviously, a number of guys are in Australia and a number of guys were away with the Under-20s as well. We have a mix here of guys that weren’t on tour, guys rehabbing various different injuries.

“It’s good seeing the group getting back together again, a few new faces we have floating around the place, which I’m sure everyone will see at some stage. It’s good to be back. We’ll have another break during the middle of pre-season, where some other teams are probably going to be hard at it. We’re just trying to break up the preseason because I know from experience having gone through a lot of preseasons myself they can be hard going.”

There are titles to be defended on two fronts next season meaning that from day one of pre-season the focus for the players, coaches and backroom staff is on improving and staying ahead of the chasing pack.

“We want to get better, so that means making sure we’re in better physical condition going into the season.

“There’s a big emphasis on that behind the scenes, and all the work that goes in there is huge.

“From a rugby point of view making sure we’re skilfully better, our tactical appreciation of the game is better. We’ll do a bit of work inside as well as outside.

“That’s the biggest thing for us, just trying to continually improve. We know everyone else around Europe will be trying to do the same. For us, we just need to focus on how we get better.

“The players know it’s such a competitive environment. We’re here at the moment and there are still guys that are in the squad that are still playing this weekend against Australia.

“We have a lot of guys here that are very ambitious young guys that want to not just play for Leinster but go on and play for Ireland as well. They need to understand how they can close that gap so they can get on that plane for the next trip to Australia or wherever that trip is going to be.

“It’s competitive and they know this is a window for them to get better now. The players are smart enough to figure that out themselves. For us as coaches, it’s about making sure we do everything we possibly can do to facilitate their improvement. That’s what we’ve tried to focus on: making sure the programme gets better, a few tweaks in terms of facilities, little bits off the field, what we do and how we deliver messages.”

BALLINTEER St John’s made it a brilliant six wins from six in AHL Division 2 with a cracking win over Erin’s Isle this week as they moved four points clear at the top of the table.

Travelling across the city midweek is never an easy task but Ballinteer were looking to keep their unbeaten record going and once the ball was thrown in, it was clear that they were up for the task.

Some great points from Tom Ahern, Joe Maher and Aodhan Clabby and some solid defending at the back from Brian Smith helped John’s control the opening half.

As was to be expected, the Finglas side didn’t lie back and accept defeat easily and got two goals for themselves after the break.

And it could have been more if it wasn’t for a fine save by Seanie Lane.

Clabby got the goal for Ballinteer to secure the 1-19 to 2-8 victory.

DUBLIN manager Jim Gavin says Stephen Cluxton will be fit and ready when the Super 8s kick off next month after he missed Sunday’s Leinster Championship final win over Laois.

Cluxton had been named in the starting line-up but was a late withdrawal after failing to recover from a rib injury that forced him to be replaced during the semi-final with Longford.

The 36-year-old was expected to miss a month following a late challenge from Longford’s James McGivney, but was deemed fit enough to be named in the starting 15 just two weeks later.

A flare-up of the injury meant he missed a championship game for the first time in 14 years.

Cluxton was replaced by deputy Evan Comerford, who performed well as Dublin secured an eighth successive provincial title with an easy 1-25 to 0-10 win.

Gavin moved quickly, however, to

reassure fans that number one Cluxton will return between the sticks raring to go come July 14.

He said: “Stephen had declared himself fit during the week and we had to give a team in so we were going to give him every chance.

“Ultimately it comes down to the management team to make that call, what’s best for the player and for the team.

“I thought Evan was exceptional. It’s something we are not surprised with because he is playing so well in our games in training, so hats off to him.”

Gavin was surprised to see John Small sent off 12 minutes from time for an alleged slap on Laois’s Evan O’Carroll.

“My initial reaction was that it was just a clumsy challenge,” said Gavin.

“I don’t think there was anything malicious in what John did.

“Maybe the linesman said something to the referee, I’m not too sure, but I was surprised he was sent off.”

Gavin feels there’s improvement in the side yet, as they left a number of points on the field during an evenly-

contested first half, before pulling away in the second.

“Overall, I’m happy with the performance. In the first half Laois played really well and our boys created a lot of scoring chances but just didn’t convert.

“But the positive thing at half-time was we were just a little bit clunky but creating lots of goal chances, lots of chances for points, just didn’t take them.

“The contrast was we were quite clinical in the second half.

“I think our first wide was after the 26th minute of the second half.”

Gavin was mildly critical of the experimental Super 8s format, which sees the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland scrapped in favour of two groups

ALL-IRELAND champions Cork proved too strong for Dublin at Pairc ui Rinn as they fell to a 4-15 to 2-3 defeat in Group 2.

After a slow start, Dublin egded themselves back into the game with a goal from Orla Beagan and finely struck points from Emma Flanagan, Siobhán Kehoe, and Eimear McCarthy.

After 20 minutes Ali Twomey was Introduced for Alex Griffin and made her mark immediately.

Roisin Baker was glued to experienced defender Gemma O’Connor and took her completely out of the game much to Dublin’s delight.

But Cork pounced for a second goal and they duly pulled away in the second half.

With Cork players like Orla Cronin scoring 1-5 and a Katrina Mackey adding another 1-3 to the score line it made Dublin’s effort to come back into the game unlikely.

There was a moment of magic when the young Beegan scored a magnificent goal from a free which skimmed along the surface,, unstoppable for keeper Aoife Murray.

But the Rebels were always in cruise control and got their win.
