Metro North project ‘is only on hold’ Q MIMI MURRAY
THE multimillion euro light rail system Metro North is to be mothballed, local Fine Gael councillor Anne Devitt claimed this week. Speaking to the Gazette, Devitt said she was “ferociously disappointed” but that she is a “pragmatist” and was happy that the project will not be cancelled. Following months of media
speculation that the project would be “deferred” she said that it is her belief the project will be postponed. “I don’t think there is any surprise in that. I am a pragmatist and there are loads of things that need to be done. Neither [of the] two tenders can go to the markets to borrow money and the rate of borrowing is non-viable at the moment.” Full Story on Page 2
A whole lotta love: For the Irish spud on Potato Day PICTURED is little farmer Keeva Thomas who was hard at work recently to help Keogh’s Potatoes launch National Potato Day on Thursday, August 25. Keogh’s were encouraging everyone to eat at least one potato on the day, by taking up some of their special offers in stores nationwide. And, in Dublin’s
Merrion Square, there were plenty of “smashin” potato events, with adaptations of traditional favourites to introduce such games as the spud sack races and the spud n’ spoon races, or even make your own Mr and Mrs Potato Head, competitions as well as yummy potato dishes and goodies for all the family.
