SOME WILL, SOME WON’T, SOME NEED A LOT OF LOVIN’ AND SOME DON’T: TAKING BUSINESS ON THE BID JOURNEY ICTC Conference 2012
APOLOGIES FOR BAD 70’S POP •
Racey with their 1979 hit “Some Girls”
I've seen those looks you're sending me This is the way it's meant to be There's nothing left to talk about Oh, how I wish you'd work it out
LISMORE... ...WE HAVE A SOLUTION! •
Local business collected the first Special rate variation in 1998 (SBRVL) for “defined” problem solving around safety.
•
Morphed into events in the “naughties” when CCTV cameras were all paid for. No one knew what to do!
•
Was superseded by newer BID structure in 2009.
THE DIFFERENCE A MANAGER MAKES •
BID Manager started in 2009 and helped shift the mentality from “definition” to “revitalisation”
•
Introduced new branding for the BID, along with an emphasis on placemaking and partnerships.
•
Burned out or got burned? Having a manager creates a target.
WHO’S YOUR DADDY?
•
John Lydgate and Aesop’s Ass.
ANYTHING COUNCIL ...IS POLITICS •
Any group that has council involvement will be political. There will be those that oppose ideas without justification.
•
BID’s cannot withdraw from this political space as it is the intersection between The public/private partnership.
ALL THE PEOPLE...
•
Celebrate your big wins. When others acknowledge something your BID has done, make some noise so people know about it.
•
Find ways to leverage and further develop the idea as it will encounter less resistance than new ideas.
SOME OF THE PEOPLE... •
Some will want to contribute and participate in everything that you do. Work with these businesses as the greatest returns come form the solutions, not the problems.
•
The amount of social capital that is built with these proactive people is greater than the loss in social capital that occurs from those who are not motivated to participate.
UNIVERSAL DA
•
One DA to rule them all!

YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE •
Take risks, share risks. Look for innovation and partnerships.
•
The status quo is not sustainable in BID management.
•
Ignore the politically motivated negativity that surrounds council operations. You gain marginal social capital from attempting to problem solve for individuals as positive results are always conditional.
•
A focus on what is working engenders trust with those who need it most, "your community" and produces results.
WINNING HEARTS AND MINDS •
Perception is changing!
•
Passion is being shared!
•
The BID is succeeding...
THANK YOU
