WHO AM I ?
HI, I’M ROBIN AND I’M A 4th YEAR STUDENT FROM BELGIUM AT THE UANTWERPEN. I’M SPORTIVE AND LOVE GYMNASTICS, BUT ALSO PHOTOGRAPHY AND SKETCHING, WHICH I DO IN MY SPARE TIME. I CHOSE TO STUDY PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT BECAUSE DESIGN HAS ALWAYS HAD MY ATTENTION JUST LIKE SKETCHING, AND WHAT’S BETTER THAN TO COMBINE YOUR PASSIONS INTO A JOB LATER? I PRACTICE GYMNASTICS SINCE I WAS 6.

FIND A PRODUCT THAT IS STIGMATIZING FOR ITS USER OR THE ENVIRONMENT AND DESIGN 6 SOLUTIONS THAT HELP IT TO BE GENERALLY MORE ACCEPTED.
STIGMATICITY
INSU
FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT WE HAD TO DESIGN 6 SOLUTIONS FOR AN EXISITING STIGMATIZING PRODUCT. THESE SOLUTIONS NEEDED TO SOLVE THE STIGMATIZING PROBLEM OR MAKE IT MORE BAREABLE FOR THE USER AND HIS/HER ENVIRONMENT. WE DECIDED TO CHOOSE FOR A GLUCOSE METER BUT AFTER RESEARCH REFOCUSED ON THE INSULIN PUMP, ANOTHER PRODUCT FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES.

WE DECIDED ON 3 FOCUS GROUPS: ELDERLY, YOUTH AND SPORTERS. WE THEN STARTED SKETCHING DIFFERENT CONCEPTS TO FINALLY END UP WITH 6 CONCEPTS WE WOULD DEVELOP FURTHER.
| IDEATION
SKETCHING A MINIMUM OF 2 CONCEPTS FOR EACH GROUP, AFTER THIS WE CHOSE 6 CONCEPTS WE DEVELOPED FURTHER FROM CONCEPT TO PRODUCT WITH SOME DESIGN: INSU COVER, INSU LEG STRAP, INSU SIGHT, INSU STRAP BAG, INSU WATCH AND INSU SPORTLINE.
WE USED THE PAM’S METHOD TO FIND THE SOCIAL AND STIGMATIZING PROBLEMS FOR ALL THE STAKEHOLDERS AND NEXT WE USED THE PIM’S METHOD TO FIND DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOLUTIONS FOR THESE PROBLEMS. (These methods were developed by UAntwerpen PhD Kristof Vaes.)

DESIGN IN 1 WEEK A SOLUTION FOR THE NEAR FUTURE TO SOLVE AN EXISTING PROBLEM, MAKING A COMBINATION OF TRANSPORTATION IN ANY SORT AND HEALTHCARE.
WORKSHOPWEEK
AMHU
(ARMY MOBILE HOSPITAL UNIT)
FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT WE WORKED TOGETHER WITH DESIGN STUDIO: ‘DESIGN BY FRANK’ TO FIND A SOLUTION TO AN EXISTING PROBLEM WHERE WE WOULD COMBINE TRANSPORTATION AND HEALTHCARE IN 1 WEEK AND IT HAD TO LOOK ‘BADASS’. WE CHOSE TO INNOVATE THE MOBILE ARMY CAMPS / FIELD HOSPITALS, WE WANTED TO MAKE THESE FASTER LIKE TENTS AND STRONGER/MORE HYGIENIC LIKE BUILDINGS. THIS SOLUTION INVOLVED 2 TRUCKS AND A TENT-SYSTEM.
| EXPLORATION
THERE ARE 3 KINDS OF SOLUTIONS FOR THE MOMENT. WE WANT TO MAKE A COMBINATION OF THE LAST 2, THE BENEFIT OF THE SPEED OF TENTS AND THE DURABILITY OF CONCRETE/METAL STRUCTURES.

DESIGN AN ITEM IN WHICH 1 PERSON/GROUP CAN STORE MAXIMUM 5 PERSONAL ITEMS AND CORRESPONDS WITH THE STYLE OF THE USER.
PERSONAL CONTAINER
PERSONAL CONTAINER
FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT WE HAD TO MAKE, WHAT’S CALLED A PERSONAL CONTAINER, AN ITEM THAT CAN HOLD 5 PERSONAL BELONGINGS OF A USER OF CHOICE. THE PRODUCT HAD TO BE DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT FITS COMPLETELY WITH THE STYLE OF THE USER. AFTER SOME EXPLORATION WE CHOOSE FOR THE LIVE-DUBSTEP PERFORMANCE ‘DESTROID’ AS USER. SO THE FINAL PRODUCT HAD TO LOOK MEAN, FUTURISTIC, AND OVERWHELMING.
| EXPLORATION
BRAINSTORMING
WE STARTED BRAINSTORMING AROUND SOME EXTRAORDINARY JOBS AND HOBBY’S AND ENDED UP GOING FOR DJ’S WHICH WE LATER SPECIFIED INTO THE LIVE-DUBSTEP PERFORMANCE ‘DESTROID’.

DESIGN A PRODUCT THAT TELLS A TALE MAKING USE OF THE INPUT OF ITS USER AND FOCUS ON THE USER EXPERIENCE.
WORDCATCHER
TALE-O-MATIC
FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT WE HAD TO MAKE, WHAT’S CALLED A WORDCATCHER. IT’S A PRODUCT THAT USES UP TO 5 WORDS OF THE USER AS INPUT, THEN A SMALL GROUP OF WRITERS, STORYTELLERS, ... MAKE A STORY OUT OF IT IN 24H AND THAT GETS SENT BACK TO THE USER. HE/SHE CAN LISTEN TO IT ONCE. THE FOCUS OF THIS PRODUCT IS ON THE USER EXPERIENCE.

REDESIGN AN AIR FRESHENER, BASED ON AN EXISTING SYSTEM , THAT IS ECO FRIENDLY AND HAS A BRAND IDENTITY.
AIR FRESHENER
AIR FRESHENER
FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT WE HAD TO REDESIGN AN AIR FRESHENER. WE HAD TO USE THE EXISTING MAIN MECHANIC (IN OUR CASE THE PRODUCT MADE USE OF THE GRID TO EVAPORATE A FLUID.) BUT WE HAD TO TWEAK IT TO MAKE IT MORE ECO FRIENDLY AND WE HAD TO CREATE A HOUSING THAT FITS WITH AN EXISTING BRAND IDENTITY, WE CHOSE FOR ‘AXE’.
| EXPLORATION
WE STARTED EXPLORING INDIVIDUALLY TO DISCOVER PROBLEMS WITH THE EXISTING MODEL THAT COULD BE RESOLVED, INCORPORATING ECOLOGY IN OUR DESIGN PROCESS.

THIS IS THE FINAL MODEL OF THE AXE AIR FRESHENER. IT USES THE GRID TO HEAT UP A RESISTOR TO EVAPORATE THE FLUID THAT DRIPS OUT OF THE CYLINDRICAL CONTAINER ONTO THE BOWL BELOW. THE LEVEL CAN BE ADJUSTED WITH THE WHEEL, BY INCREASING OR DECREASING THE AMOUNT OF DROPS. ITS FORM IS INSPIRED BY THE AXE SHAMPOO BOTTLE.

DESIGN AN AUTOMAT THAT’S LOCATED IN A PROTECTED ENVIRONMENT MAKING IT AS MODULAR AS POSSIBLE, BUT STILL SAVE, AND GIVE THE AUTOMAT AND ITS ‘GUI’ A FRESHER LOOK.
AUTOMAT
TERMINAL.
FOR THE BACHELOR THESIS WE HAD TO DESIGN A NEW MODEL OF AUTOMAT FOR THE FIRM ‘ANTENOR’. THE EXISTING MODELS ARE OUTDATED AND USE TOO MUCH SPACE, SO MODULARITY WAS A BIG FOCUS. THE GUI (GRAPHIC USER INTERFACE) HAD TO BE REDESIGNED TO, TO A MORE UP TO DATE VERSION.
