Whilst the focus of my work was upon Riba stages 0-3, technical design and stage 4 would be considered and some development made towards it to aid the transition into construction.

My role within the planning team was to develop a scheme from feasibility stage and initial massing, through several pre-applications and refinement process to secure planning permission.

Woolwich, London | 2019 | BUJ Architects CONSERVATION ZONES I worked on a prospective masterplan and high rise residential tower for Woolwich that sought to act as a link between the existing and proposed conservation zones and celebrate the former covered market. This involved in depth research into the existing Royal Arsenal and proposed Woolwich conservation area and local heritage assets. There is a sensitivity in dealing with heritage assets that can only be resolved through fully understanding the character and local vernacular of an area. Central Woolwich is a contested in that it has a strong desire to preserve it’s heritage, but also an eagerness for rapid development and townscape build up to coincide with the opening of the Elizabeth line (Crossrail). Already within the Royal Arsenal conservation area, there are consented and built schemes of up to 25 storeys that sit beside Grade II listed architecture.

Research | 2019 | BUJ Architects THE RESEARCH

The Planning team of which I was a part of at BUJ, was research driven, for any pre-app we did extensive policy, character and context analysis and converted this information into easy to understand infographics and drawings.

Sometimes the extent of research exceeded the need of a particular pre-app and we were left over with a collection of interesting drawn studies.

Over time various studies into brick arches had been done collectively within the team. I took the strands of information from various projects, collated and added to it whilst examining brick arches in Woolwich.

From doing so I observed a quantifiable characteristic could be defined by the relationship between arch height to vertical rise. Every time I now see an Arch I try and estimate what percentile it belongs to.

Limehouse, London | 2018 | BUJ Architects RESIDENTS WORKSHOP I worked alongside the creative director to produce a brochure and visuals as part of a residents workshop that acted as a platform for a discussion between Galliard homes and residents about the potential development of their ground floor hardstanding into a new residential block. The site was considered an important townscape junction, both as a termination vista, but also as a gateway site into Canary Wharf - the last opportunity for a new development before you enter the Limehouse link tunnel.

QUAY HOUSE Isle of Dogs, London | 2017 | BUJ Architects SERVICED APARTMENTS I was involved in the iterative design process on a 42 storey serviced apartment scheme for the isle of dogs. My first very first day at BUJ Architects involved remodelling all 42 of the irregularly shaped floor-plates. During the first month, leading up to the 4th Pre-app, the design was constantly evolving. What resulted was a unitised facade system that worked upon articulated panels. Working in Rhino 3D I produced conceptual renders and axonometrics that helped explain the idea of an articulated facade, testing both ideas and different material treatments.

A WELFARE SPACE FOR 1FA Broadgate, London | 2017 | Sir Robert McAlpine THE BROADGATE 5 As one of the five young designers selected by Sir Robert McAlpine to re-imagine the often overlooked site welfare facilities, we explored an entire building in search of materials, catalogued, recycled and developed a scheme that is playful, thoughtful and shows the user they are valued. I learnt the art of ‘what’s possible’ under demanding deadlines.

1 FINSBURY AVENUE I had been in charge of the phased design of 100 Liverpool street, working around demolition works to provide the welfare facilities. When the critical path changed drastically and demolition was set back months a change of venue was required and so the concepts, layouts and ideas were adapted for 1FA. NOTES:

SOUTHBURY HOUSE Enf ield, London | 2019 | Create Design M AX I M I S I N G D E V E L O P M E N T P O T E N T I A L Southbury House was a site that developer Interland had approached Create Design about prior to my involvement. The previously consented scheme was for 2 x 1 bed units, that didn’t provide the financial return developers sought. The site presented several challenges including an existing substation and small development area. I proposed a five storey scheme providing 4 x 2 bed units and a 1 bed unit at Ground floor, whilst maintaining access to the substation and proving the height and scale of development was appropriate to the site. Planning officers had raised their concerns over the sites suitability for a larger scale development. My submitted scheme and supporting materials convinced them of the proposals strengths, providing much needed housing for the borough and maximising the development potential for the client.

I M P R E S S I N G T H E I N - L AW S The pandemic had taken a toll on not just my health leaving me with a lengthy recovery period, but also my career. I felt disconnected from architecture, as though the high speed train I’d be on for so long had hit a sudden full stop and derailed. My In-laws had recently moved home in the late 2021 and offered me the opportunity to work on renovating their home. I found my feet modelling their house in BIM as all my dormant architectural knowledge flooded back to me in waves on information. The project brief was only internal renovation not requiring planning permission, removing of some wall, internal windows, a new raised floor and relocation of a kitchen, which could have been covered by just a series of elevations, plans and sections for construction issue. However, to push myself and prepare to re-enter the workforce - I promised the client a 3d walk-through of their entire property and modelled it to detail in Archicad producing visualisations, axonometrics and an interactive 3D model. For good practice I adhered to correct working procedure, following the BS1192 naming convention and organising my BIM models and project files as though working in a practice.

I learnt a great deal about interior fit outs and construction details. Gained the confidence to speak and liaise with engineers, contractors, planning officers and clients. And got my first taste of built design. I joined the project during strip out when structural works were beginning to take place for the new foyer space. My main role was to manage the BIM model and produce 3d visuals and orthographic construction drawings. But due to the small nature of the studio I had heavy involvement in the design of the new children’s area and laser cut tree panels that adorn the library. I became good friends with staff at the library and regularly visited after hand over to enjoy the space - light, modern and comfortable.

The project included the complete strip out and refit of an existing public library, as well as a reconfiguration of the foyer, installation of an oversized window bay/skylight and new meeting rooms. Moving to Australia for a year to work in a small practice taking on big projects, I got a lot of exposure. I was the sole assistant in a company of two; my boss - Cecilia Kugler and myself. Designing libraries, dealing with clients, tender packages, contractors, site visits, defects lists, construction drawings and BIM modelling.

THE PROJECT 

A new library was proposed for the St Marks National Theological Centre. The project consisted of the partial demolition of existing structure and erection of a 2 storey building and complete refit, to the benefit students of the Canberra university campus.

     

As a student one gives little thought to the basic functions of a building or the human body. We fall in love with the grandeur of the architecture and poetic moments. But drawing toilet elevations was a grounding moment for me in that I started to think about the little seemingly dull things that make a world of difference to the user. The act of designing a toilet well gives a dignified way to respond to nature’s call.



RECONNECTING VAUXHALL

MArch Project | 2014 - 2015 | UEL THE BRIEF The project aim was to create inclusion through re-linking Vauxhall with the waterfront and engaging the disenfranchised youth of the area. This was achieved through introducing a necklace of activities that creates a strong link between Vauxhall pleasure Gardens and the Thames, one that historically existed but has since been lost. The project grew out of research into exclusion zones within London, identifying how such measures negatively impacted young people, exacerbating antisocial behaviour.

The link is defined through materiality, a change from the surrounding asphalt defines this new space

The architectural response was to create two activity centres that form a strong link and act as communal nodes, in hope it would appeal directly to the youth of Vauxhall without being patronising or exclusive. A kayak centre and pontoon swimming pool on the Thames reclaims the embankment from private developments, promotes cross pollination within the community and provides a new piece of public realm, this is reinforced by a new climbing centre and revamped sports pitch within the lacking facilities of Vauxhall pleasure gardens, forming a programmatic and visual link.

The link is defined through materiality, a change from the surrounding asphalt defines this new space The link is more than a connecting point it can become a new piece of public realm through simple additions, paved space that delineates a hierarchy favouring pedestrians, park users and joggers.

A SHARED SPACE

Final Project | 2015 - 2016 | UEL THE BRIEF Based within the Silvertown Quays development by First Base, the project was a combination of a new industrial design school and technology enterprise centre. The aim was to inject a fine grain of urban experience to the master plan through a network of internalised streets that traverse the proposed plots.

And then focus on one built proposal to challenge the pre-notion of net/gross ratios through the overlapping functions of both programmes, as areas of shared circulation within the building.

‘Plug & Play’ Construction was based around prefabricated modular components that could be placed in varying combinations within an insitu concrete frame, potentially allowing for ad hoc modification and additions overtime.

The project was inspired by a trip to Seoul, South Korea, where I observed how ad hoc developments and internalised streets created a rich urban experience that could not be achieved through following the master-planned grid.
