Grand Things Happen Here

Vom Investment Banker zum Weingutsbesitzer Hanspeter Stutz, Visionär mit Weitsicht Wunder geschehen nicht von alleine. Der 12 Hektar umfassende Rebberg wurde vollständig neu bepflanzt und Hanspeter verbrachte die nächsten fünf Jahre damit, das alte Bauernhaus und die umliegenden Scheunen mit Schweizer Perfektionismus zu renovieren. Der Weg zum Erfolg war voller Baustellen.

Eigentlich ist die Familie Stutz eher zufällig in Kanada gelandet.

Als Hanspeter in den 90er Jahren im Auftrag eines Kunden die landwirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten Neuschottlands unter die Lupe nahm, entdeckte er ein schlafendes Dornröschen. Das verlotterte Weingut Grand Pré, mit Aussicht auf die weltweit höchsten Tiden wurde zur Zukunftsvision.

Der passionierte Weinliebhaber hatte nach dem schmerzlichen Tod seiner Ehefrau eine neue Herausforderung dringend nötig und so entschloss er sich, die erfolgreiche Karriere in der Schweiz an den Nagel zu hängen.

Zusammen mit seiner damals 20 jährigen Tochter Beatrice und dem 19 jährigen Sohn Jürg wollte er ein Familienunternehmen gründen und nochmals ganz von vorne anfangen. Die beiden Kids waren zuerst eher skeptisch, hatten sie doch eine total andere Karriere geplant.

Jürg wollte als Banker in die Fußstapfen seines Vaters treten aber ließ sich kurzerhand zu einer Winzer– und Önologausbildung in Wädenswil überreden.

Beatrice hatte ein Drogistinnen Diplom in der Tasche und bereits ein wenig Auslandluft geschnuppert. Sie kam gerade von einem 3–monatigen Sprachaufenthalt aus Kalifornien zurück und erklärte sich zu einem zeitlich befristeten Nova Scotia Experiment bereit. Bei Nichtgefallen würde sie nach zwei Jahren in die Schweiz zurückkehren.

Hanspeter hatte das gesamte Leben seiner Familie umgekrempelt und nun gab es kein zurück mehr.

1993 ersteigerte der Visionär das heruntergekommene Weingut und musste einsehen, dass davon nichts mehr zu retten war.

Wunder geschehen nicht von alleine.

Der 12 Hektar umfassende Rebberg wurde vollständig neu bepflanzt und Hanspeter verbrachte die nächsten fünf Jahre damit, das alte Bauernhaus und die umliegenden Scheunen mit Schweizer Perfektionismus zu renovieren. Der Weg zum Erfolg war voller Baustellen.

Beatrice begann ihr neues Leben als Stellvertreterin einer Drogerie und landete schlussendlich auf Umwegen als Angestellte in einem Gourmetrestaurant.

Das Motto Ihres Vaters „flexibel muss man sein im Leben“ galt auch für sie.

Nach sechs Jahren harter Arbeit brachte Hanspeter zusammen mit seinem frischgebackenen Winzer Sohn die erste Ernte ein.

Im Juni 2000 wurde die Domaine de Grand Pré Winery offiziell eröffnet und der erste Jahrgang ausgeschenkt.

Aber der Weinproduzent hatte bereits das nächste Ziel avisiert: Für Trank war ja nun gesorgt, also musste auch noch Speis‘ her.

Gesagt, getan - ein Weinguts Restaurant wurde gebaut, um die Tochter als Managerin ins Familienbusiness zu integrieren.

Während der gut ausgebildete Jürg in seinem neuen Beruf florierte, war Beatrice in ihrer neuen Rolle etwas überfordert.

Das Vater Tochter Team hatte hohe Ambitionen und wollten Schweizer Küche zu europäischen Preisen in die verschlafene Küstenprovinz importieren.

Die Rechnung ging aber nicht so leicht auf und die Kundschaft ließ noch auf sich warten.

Heute lacht Beatrice über die anfänglichen Fehlschüsse, aus denen man schnell gelernt hat. Ein hiesiger Chefkoch wurde angeheuert, das Menü auf lokale Spezialitäten umkreiert und die Preise (um runde 15% ) gesenkt. Von da an ging es nur noch aufwärts!

Heute sind die Restaurantmanagerin und der Koch auch im privaten Leben ein Team, das am selben Strick zieht.

Unser Geheimtipp: für Hochzeitsfeiern ist man von Mai bis Oktober gut eingeplant.

Die zahlreichen Stammkunden sorgen für den Rest und es ist kein Wunder, denn „Le Caveau“ ist mehrfach prämiert und gilt als einer der besten Gourmet Tempel an der kanadischen Ostküste.

Hanspeter zeigt stolz auf einen Artikel in der Zeitschrift „Wine Access“, in dem es sein Stammlokal auf die Liste der „Top 20 Wine Farm Restaurants“ weltweit geschafft hat.

Jürg ist inzwischen selbst Vater zweier Kinder geworden und seine Frau Cäcilia führt die Weinboutique.

Vater’s Partnerin Anna kümmert sich um den Weinverkauf an den diversen lokalen Bauernmärkten und ist in der übrigen Zeit für die Gestaltung und die Pflege des großen Gartens zuständig.

Die gesamte Familie ist involviert, ganz so wie es sich Hanspeter vorgestellt hatte.

Im Weinbusiness ist allerdings nicht immer alles so gelaufen, wie man es sich vorgestellt hatte. Der Staat hat da anfänglich ziemlich krass reingefunkt: Die Gesetze sind hier völlig anders als in der Schweiz; ein wichtiges Detail, das der Stutz Familie beinahe einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht hätte.

Alkohol untersteht nämlich der Aufsicht des ,,Nova Scotia Liquor Board”, das nicht nur den Verkauf sondern auch die Preise und Gewinnmargen vorschreibt.

Ohne das Verhandlungsgeschick des schlauen Schweizer Fuchses hätte die Sache bös enden können.

Der junge Winzer Jürg hat seine Weine dem hiesigen Klima angepasst und entwickelt laufend neue, kreative Eigenkreationen. Viele Gold, Silber und Bronze Medaillen an kanadischen Weinwettbewerben sind das Resultat.

Zusammen mit seinem Vater freut er sich, dass sich weitere fünf Weinfarmen in der Nachbarschaft angesiedelt haben, bald werden es insgesamt 15 sein.

Ein wenig Konkurrenz schadet nichts, schließlich will man zu einer berühmten Tourismus Destination werden.

Das Nappa Valley der Ostküste ist bereits fest im Ausflugsprogramm der Halifax anlaufenden Kreuzfahrtschiffe integriert.

Nova Scotia ist kein verschlafenes Nest mehr und Hanspeter sorgt dafür, dass etwas läuft. Er mischt in einigen Eventkomitees mit und schon viele Ideen sind auf seinem Mist gewachsen so als Beispiel das Valley Pumpkin Festival.

Und wenn der dynamische KanadaSchweizer nicht gerade die Werbetrommel für das Stutz Imperium schlägt oder auf der Suche nach neuen Visionen ist, dann sieht man ihn in seinen Lederklamotten auf dem „Mopedl“ durch die Gegend flitzen.

Stets auf der Suche nach neuen Jagdgründen. Hanspeter ist nämlich auch ein passionierter Pilzsucher, und mit seiner goldenen Nase kennt er fast jedes Plätzchen, wo es „Eierschwämmli“ zu finden gibt.

Im Herbst wenn es grau ist und zu allem Überfluss in Strömen regnet oder im Winter, wenn die Welt im Schneechaos versinkt, will man auch nicht wirklich das Haus verlassen um sich von der nahenden Winterdepression des Chefs anmuffeln zulassen. Wäre es da nicht schön, wenn man in Puschen und Kuschelpulli zu Hause bleiben könnte.

Enjoying the comfort and cosiness of your home while earning your living, doesn’t have to be a longing dream, but can become reality. It only needs the right home in the right location and a little courage for setting up your own business.

Doch wie sieht das richtige Heim aus? How does this reason: you need to separate your work life from your private life, denn es ist wenig hilfreich wenn das Lieblingssofa einem bei der Arbeit zusieht oder aber die Arbeit einem im Nacken sitzt, während man gerade ein spannendes Buch in der Hand hat.

Die Frage ist schnell beantwortet: Viel Licht, viel Platz, eine Prise Ordnung und auf gar keinen Fall ein gemütliches Gerümpel. Fazit: Man braucht einen Ort mit vielen Fenstern, der zwar genug Raum bietet, aber nicht genug, um seinen Dekorationswahn auszuleben – das sollte man sich für das Wohnzimmer aufsparen. source of creativity. Hier erfährt man die notwendige Abgeschiedenheit vom Privatleben.

Ein weiterer Vorteil der Aufteilung auf mehrere Geschosse ist der Faktor Bequemlichkeit: Keiner wird, einmal oben im Büro angekommen, freiwillig noch einmal den beschwerlichen Weg zum Privatleben im Erdgeschoss und wieder zurück ins Arbeitsleben im Obergeschoss tätigen, wenn es nicht wirklich absolut notwendig ist.

Umgekehrt gilt dasselbe: Niemand mag doch die Behaglichkeit seines Fernsehsessels für irgendeine Banalität, die sich im Arbeitsleben des Obergeschosses aufhält, aufgeben. Diese Bequemlichkeit sorgt dafür, dass das Privatleben einen nicht von der Arbeit ablenkt und andersrum.

Keeping regular office hours can be a challenge! So, in consideration of this physical-economic aspect, I suppose most people would postpone their distracting movements out of the office space to “the next regular scheduled trip down stairs”. Two lives on two floors and you’ll be the boss in both of them, without the one interfering with the other.

Die Frage nach dem „Wohin“ lässt sich schon nicht mehr so leicht beantworten. Die Stadt hört sich sehr verlockend an mit ihren kurzen Wegen und ihrem breiten Spektrum an Freizeitgestaltung. Once you have established: TO BE a home office, to be in the city or not to be in the city is the next question. But what would be the alternative? The country. Indeed, the city’s wide range of services also bears the risk of being too much. After a day of hard work, when your head is spinning, do you really want to be surrounded by rushing people, blaring music, honking cars and polluted air? Or do you prefer the quiet peacefulness of the countryside?

Trau Dich, live your life and do it your way!

atürlich ist es frustrierend, für eine Kleinigkeit eine halbe Weltreise in die Stadt machen zu müssen. Doch sind die Vorteile des Landlebens nicht von der Hand zu weisen. Wie schön ist es im Sommer die frische Luft einzuatmen und die Augen mit einem Blick ins Weite zu entspannen und wie magisch ist die Stille, die einen umgibt wenn der erste Schnee fällt und alle Geräusche abzuschotten scheint? Possibly the countryside may be a little too quiet at times, especially in times in which you’d like to go out after work, but don’t have any energy left to move yourself out of the house. Seriously, would you solve this situation differently while living in the city? Think about the overall lazy-factor.

Oh! I’ve become an artist and I’m painting now, each day.

Pretty pictures I shall take with me when I must go away; I don’t use plaque or brushes, or paints of any kind, For I’m painting all my pictures on the canvas of my mind.

There’s a field of snowy daisies, smiling in the sun, Where buttercups are nodding and laughing children run; A patch of green beneath the blue that stretches far and wide, Where bees drone in the clover and crimson berries hide.

There’s the garden with the summer-house beneath the apple-tree, And just there on the other side a trellis of sweet-pea; There are creeping things, and climbing things, and green-tops in a row, And little tubs beside the walk where bright nasturtiums grow.

Pink rosebushes at the corner, and dahlias grand and tall, Maples red and rock-bound bed of smiling pansies small; There are the stately hollyhocks, the big, round tulip-bed, And the border on the gravel drive of gladiolus red.

Two sisters playing croquet, brother tossing ball, Little tot with carriage and a golden-haired doll; And over ‘neath the cedars a bench with lunch is spread--Pink lemonade and cookies, and delicious raisin-bread!

And just inside my little house a sun-porch, cute and small, Striped curtains, stand and wicker-chairs, a deer’s head on the wall; French windows to the dining-room, a lamp of Chinese blue, Rows on rows of china plates, a tidy kitchen, too.

The living-room in shadow with firelight glowing o’er, Brother with the kitten romping on the floor, One sister in the twilight, tuning violin, The other at piano, ready to begin.

Shelves of books, pillowed couch, comfy easy chairs, Baby’s smiling face above the railing of the stairs--Oh! I love my pretty pictures, and they’ll comfort with the thought That once I owned a cottage and a little garden-plot!

I have had a love affair with Florida for over 45 years. My parents bought a winter retreat home there and enjoyed beating winter months for over 20 years. Sophisticated and spectacular, Florida is well known globally for its array of leisure pursuits. There is always something new to see and learn when in Florida and it is still the highest ranked state in the United States for affordable travel and easy accessibility.

I traded homes with my parents in the summer months which afforded me the luxury of being able to explore the State of Florida.

Florida has a fascinating history. It is the 27th State admitted to the Union and it received its name from a Spanish explorer by the name of Juan Ponce De Leon. Good old Juan was the first European to set foot in Florida and ever since that time Europeans and Canadians have fallen in love like I did with this area.

I want to touch on an area in the Southwest Florida region known as the Paradise Coast.

Let’s begin with Naples.

Ahh, Naples .. located in Southwest Florida it lies bordered by the gentle waters of the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the mysterious Everglades to the south resulting in an ideal semi-tropical climate and a perfect playground for the well heeled, well traveled and well educated. Naples has no heavy industry and one of Florida’s lowest crime rates and has long had an irresistible appeal due to easily accessible beaches and minimal traffic congestion. Tree lined boulevards alive with native flora and fauna are the norm.

Near the downtown there exists a wonderful historic waterfront community called Tin City. The name is derived from the ubiquitous tin roofed buildings that once formed the hub of the area’s economic development and transport, evolving into the heart of Naples’ fishing industry including oyster processing, clam shelling, boat building and maintenance. Today it has a delightful boardwalk dotted with local shops and restaurants.

Of all the natural attractions that Naples has to offer residents and visitors alike, the long beaches, renowned for their sugary white sand, are the most popular yet even

KEY WEST they, in a seeming effort to outdo themselves, underscore a limitless aquamarine horizon where dolphins dance and seabirds soar to the endless soothing rhythm of ocean washing over sand. anderbilt Beach, Naples Municipal Beach ( housing Naples Pier) and Lowdermilk Beach Park are the most popular with tourists and locals. For those seeking a more secluded experience, beaches like Delnor Wiggins Pass State Recreation Area and Clams Pass Beach Park fit the bill nicely. Visitors will enjoy fiery sunsets across the Gulf waters and will hear locals speak of ‘the green flash’, an atmospheric phenomenon occurring just as the sun slips below the horizon, its rays broken down into the full spectrum of colors. Romantics say it is the release of lost souls or a sign of true love but it’s a certainty that if one is fortunate enough to catch this fleeting glimpse it will never be forgotten.

Between May 1st and August 3rd Southwest Florida is witness to an equally amazing event when the great Loggerhead sea turtles emerge from the Gulf to enact an eons long ritual, burying their eggs in the warm sand like some ancient prayer to future generations.

From sunbathing to swamp boating the Everglades, a list of the activities Naples has on offer would require a small book but one of its premier attractions must be its world class golf courses. The names of the designers of these courses reads like a list of the greats of the game .. Palmer, Nicklaus, Norman and Hills. Naples hosts a

mainland or one of many criss-crossing canals where the tidal currents are strongest and drop your line. You’re almost assured of a strike. Along the beaches fishing rods in holders are a common sight and a productive way to catch your dinner.

Marco Island, the largest of Florida’s 10,000 islands, is an especially alluring area which has made an effort to maintain its natural wonders. It is celebrated for its lush tropical foliage and if you are a birder it provides sighting opportunities like no other with over 200 species of birds nesting there. Spotting over 130 varieties in a single day is not unusual. Like Naples, Marco offers sun drenched sand beaches and a laid back pace.

This is a popular fishing place. The Gulf temperatures provide the perfect year round environment and you don’t even need a boat. Study the locals. Follow them to one of the two bridges connecting the island to the

Das Angebot machte uns neugierig. Den Erklärungen folgend, wurde uns bald klar, dass es sich um die östlichste Provinz Kanadas handelte. Sofort begannen wir in unserer Phantasie, ein kleines Holzhaus auf einem Grundstück an einem See zu bauen und den Sonnenuntergang am Lagerfeuer in der einzigartigen Natur zu erleben. Es gibt Momente im Leben, da muss man einfach „Ja“ sagen. Aus heutiger Sicht war es wohl unsere Intuition und unser Bauchgefühl, weshalb wir sofort gefesselt waren von dieser verlockenden Idee: Haus- und Grundstücksbesitzer in Kanada!

War dies der Weg in eine neue Freiheit?

Und so waren wir bald stolze Eigentümer eines Waldgrundstücks an einem See. Doch es sollten noch einige Monate vergehen, bis wir unsere neue Errungenschaft das erste Mal tatsächlich selber sehen und erkunden konnten.

Endlich gelandet in unserem neuen Traumland machten wir uns mit unserem damals 16 jährigen Sohn Reinhard voller Neugier und Tatendrang auf den Weg zu unserem Grundstück. Als wir dieses dann endlich erreichten, brauchte es nur eine kurze Phase traumhaften Wetters, bezaubernder Abende am Lagerfeuer, traumhafter Sonnenuntergänge und weniger Begegnungen mit den warmherzigen Kanadiern, bis wir realisierten, dass unser Traum mit der Schönheit dieses Landes, seiner grenzenlosen Freiheit und unberührten Natur zu leben Wirklichkeit geworden war.

Seit diesem Erlebnis 1995 hat Kanada uns nicht mehr losgelassen. Jedes Jahr verbringen wir mehrere Wochen in Nova Scotia. Kanada bedeutet für uns inzwischen nicht nur Natur und Erholung, es ist vielmehr Inspiration für Körper, Geist und Seele.

Auf unseren Reisen lernten wir in den letzten 18 Jahren zahlreiche deutschsprachige Besitzer kanadischer Immobilien, Urlauber und Abenteurer kennen.

Aus Begegnungen wurden Freundschaften und angeregt durch den regen Austausch wuchs bei uns der Wunsch, einen Club zu gründen, um gleichgesinnten Kanada-Liebhabern eine Plattform für einen Kontaktausbau und Austausch zu geben. So entstand 2006 der Canada-Club (www.canada-Club.at) Kanada nahm immer mehr Platz in unserem Leben ein und in Gedanken beschäftigten wir uns zunehmend damit, wie wir noch mehr Zeit in unserer neuen

Wahlheimat verbringen könnten. In dieser Phase lernten wir Martina Robinson und Frank Harmsen kennen. Sie nahmen unseren Wunsch wahr und vermittelten uns an Paul Villeneuve, einen lizenzierten Immigration Consultant, der sich erfolgreich um unsere Immigration kümmerte. Dank ihnen sind wir heute stolze und glückliche Besitzer der Permanent Residence und leben unseren Traum: KANADA! In unserem über die Jahre gewachsenen Zuhause am See genießen wir es, unseren Hobbys nachzugehen: Lesen, Fotografieren und die kreative Holzbearbeitung bestimmen unseren Tag. Unsere Freiheit wird nicht einmal durch unser internationales Unternehmen www.iugs.at eingeschränkt oder unterbrochen. Es läßt sich bequem per eMail, Skype und ähnlicher Kommunikationslinien organisieren und leiten.

Unser Sohn Reinhard entwickelte ebenfalls eine tiefe Liebe zu diesem Land und ist inzwischen vernetzt mit Martina und Frank und bildet so im Namen von Robinson & Harmsen Lifestyle Real Estate Inc. ein Standbein in Österreich. So können auch dort Interessenten an Immobilien in Nova Scotia „vor Ort“ betreut werden. Neben der Arbeit verbringen Reinhard und seine Freundin Tina viel Zeit in Kanada.

Sie lieben die Natur und das Fischen und können sich inzwischen ein Leben ohne regelmäßige Reisen nach Nova Scotia nicht mehr vorstellen.

Unser Bauchgefühl, welches uns 1995 veranlasste, uns auf dieses Abenteuer einzulassen, hat uns nicht getäuscht. Das Leben hier gibt uns ein Gefühl von Freiheit, es lässt unsere Träume wahr werden und es beflügelt uns! Wir haben unser Abenteuer gefunden und dürfen den positiven Einfluss auf unser Leben nun tagtäglich neu erleben..

Building With the Earth A thumbnail sketch of energy efficient home construction In geological time it’s been mere seconds since the ideal dwelling place for homo sapiens constituted a dry, spacious cave close to sources of food and water. Said cave would be easy to heat in winter and cool in the hot season as well as readily defendable if necessary. Our requirements haven’t changed so dramatically although our defenses are more likely to be mounted against rodent and insect infestation than rival tribes or prowling carnivores. Humans are most comfortable in temperatures of the low to mid 70’s Fahrenheit. We desire a pleasing location with views, proximity to food and water as well as the benefits of health, safety and socialization derived from living close to our own kind. But two major shifts have occurred in the past several decades with regard to the standard North American home. The first is our perception of needs versus wants regarding the amenities in those homes and the second involves energy consumption. If cost in dollars were the only consideration it alone would be enough of a catalyst for change. Housing accounts for more than one fifth of the energy used in North America and energy bills for some homeowners can easily rival mortgage payments but are increasingly less predictable. The dynamics of climate change are still a subject of great controversy .. too many unknowns in a system of immense complexity .. yet our status as a mitigating factor remains obvious. All that heating and cooling is a major contributer to atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and runaway climate change, the ramifications of which are only beginning to be realized.

Enter the era of green building techniques, LEED certification and zeroenergy homes .. houses that produce more energy than they use. To date the majority of people building a new home probably won’t go the still relatively extreme route of zero-energy construction. Nonetheless,

new home buyers are demanding houses with smaller carbon footprints in both the construction stage and at the point of ultimate energy use. The issue, as is often the case, is a matter of balancing needs, wants and costs. Green building involves a variety of factors too comprehensive for this article, including materials used and their source as well as waste management on site. Our focus in this article is the ultimate energy efficiency of the house and how to best achieve it.

The first concern is siting .. orienting the structure to take advantage of natural shelter from cold winds while maximizing potential solar gain in winter without creating overheating issues in summer.

Siting considerations will often involve wind or solar power options and Nova Scotia offers excellent siting possibilities.

Average annual sunlight is substantial and the climate tends to be moderated by proximity to the Gulf Stream. The resources for understanding siting are readily available and easy to grasp if a builder or homeowner is willing to do a little reading.

The second essential is the creation of a tight, well-insulated envelope. The modern house as we know it bears no small resemblance to the human body insomuch as it consists of a skeleton (the framing) and several skin-like layers (housewrap, sheathing, siding and drywall, etc.) which can all function as effective air barriers as long as the detailing is correct. These layers protect all the interior systems of a house including what we tend to think of as the heart of the home, the kitchen. Lots of insulation, especially in cold climates, is a must. R-40 in walls and R-60 in roofs is the norm in zero-energy homes and those values are becoming increasingly common in standard construction. A number of building methods allow for R-40 walls and although some are more suitable for new construction and others favour retrofits,

they all share a common feature, deeper walls and attention to restricting air flow.

Insulating materials include fiberglass batts, blown dense-pack cellulose, foam panels and the most recent kid on the block, sprayed expandable foam, which has been used extensively in commercial/ industrial applications for some time, including the space program.

Air leaks and moisture are the enemy here. In cold climate high-R buildings the exterior sheathing spends much of the year below the dew point of interior air (the point at which water vapour condenses) because of heavily insulated walls. Any warm interior air leaking through the wall cavity will condense on the cold sheathing resulting in rot and mold growth. The need for an unbroken air barrier extending up and across a roof or ceiling and down to a basement wall or floor slab becomes obvious.

Ensuring there are no exterior water leaks is equally important. Windows should be installed on full sill flashing and have wrapped jambs and, along with doors, have proper head flashing. If a wall does get wet it should have capacity to store moisture and gradually dry to the exterior or interior. I’ve often heard comments such as ‘They really knew how to build back then’ or ‘Those old houses never rotted out’ and there’s certainly truth in those statements. But every age has had good and not so good builders and often the durability of old homes is due to the very factors which make them inefficient and expensive to heat as well as less comfortable in extremes of heat and cold. Old houses breathed. They had little if any insulation and air moved easily through their walls so that, barring window, door or roof deterioration, they were constantly drying. A similar effect may be achieved in a super insulated house with construction of something called a rain screen wall. A rain screen wall is

simply an engineered space between the siding and the sheathing and housewrap that allows for a chimney effect of moving air to effectively dry the wall. It can be achieved using battens or lath to raise the siding off the sheathing or one of several products manufactured especially for this purpose. It’s important that windows and doors also be built out to accommodate the extra depth and strict attention be paid to the details necessary for keeping insects from moving into the space.

All that insulation and air tightness in a modern home, however, results in the need for some sort of mechanical ventilation to control interior moisture. Stale, moisture laden air must be exhausted to the outside while fresh air must be brought into the house. Heat recovery ventilators can perform this function while recouping some of the energy that would be otherwise lost in the outgoing air. Other options include a device situated in the basement or crawl space and consisting of a fan and a humidity sensor. Humid air is heavier and wants to drop. The sensor may be adjusted to a desired humidity level and the fan simply pulls the humid air down through the entire house and exhausts it to the outside.

Super insulated walls cost more to build but that cost can be recouped by substantially reduced heating and cooling requirements. Conventional houses are basically heated and cooled by sheer force while things become much more subtle with a super insulated dwelling. With the R- values discussed here, standard heating systems are simply overkill. In some cases a single space heater can serve an entire house. Heat pumps extract heat from the air, ground or water and are efficient and cheap to operate. However, ground based systems can be expensive to install and air based models lose their efficiency as air temperatures drop sharply. Manufacturers are producing increasingly more efficient gas or oil fired products, some greater than 95% efficient but, again, these may simply be too much for a super insulated house and appropriate sizing is important.

Electrical-resistance heat is easy and relatively cheap to install, simple to zone by room and a viable option for a wellinsulated house but most electricity comes

from a big carbon footprint grid which tends towards a meagre 30% efficiency.

For the homeowner willing to invest up front, renewable energy options are the way to go. A super insulated house could easily be heated with the help of solar or wind systems and would actually result in power being sold back to the utility. In fact, such a house, properly sited, could stay comfortable on even the coldest days without any independent system as long as the sun were shining. If the sun refuses to shine a small high efficiency wood or pellet stove can easily do the job.

Gas fired, or electric, on demand water heaters are an economical source of hot water for radiators or, even better, an inslab hot water system. The electric heaters tend to be less efficient or durable in relation to the gas units, especially when used for domestic hot water, but are quite capable of meeting the demands of a heating system. The tankless heater is so efficient, the required water temperature so low and the heat sink capability of the concrete slab such that very little energy is required to run the system.

My first experience with in-slab hot water occurred in the earlys 90’s when the company I worked for at the time built a new house for a client on a lot exposed to the open ocean. Once the house was weathertight and drywalled our crew went home for Christmas while the company responsible for the heating system came in to do the installation and slab. The house was brought up to temperature and all the systems checked out. The system was turned off and we came back in to trim out the interior. The first winter storm hit that week and the temperature plummeted. We worked for that week and part of the next without a heating system beyond a strategically placed space heater here and there. The insulated slab retained its heat for several days and we were comfortable the whole time. I was sold on in-floor heat from then on.

Windows can easily be one of the largest single expenditure items on a house, depending on energy rating, features and custom design and are one area where it doesn’t pay to go cheap. Most modern windows are double glazed, meaning

the sash holds two panes of glass. The glass should be insulated with a gasket from both the metal channel separating the panes (often aluminum, a notoriously willing conduit for heat or cold) and the sash into which it is mounted. The space between the panes on better windows is filled with argon, an inert gas which gives the window improved insulation and soundproofing. The window sashes and frames may be aluminum clad, vinyl, steel, fiberglass or wood, or a combination of these. Each has its own features, advantages and disadvantages.

Generally speaking the more a window costs the better the design, hardware and construction. A case can be made for triple glazed windows which are more prevalent in Europe where the government and populace, at least thus far, seem to take adapting to the consequences of energy shortages and global warming somewhat more seriously than we here in North America. Although the triple glazing offers definitively superior insulation and soundproofing it can be difficult to justify an increase of 30 to 50% in cost.

This article represents a thumbnail sketch of energy efficient construction.

The industry is in a period of great fluidity.

Needs and demands and the technology to meet them are all in a state of flux.

Every project has its own variables and overriding factors and, almost inevitably, cost trumps all. Can money for super insulated walls or green energy systems be garnered from other parts of the job?

Is the client able and willing to amortize those costs over many years of reduced heating and cooling needs? As the technology and methodology improve and the demand for them increases the cost should lower correspondingly and the cave, as we know it, will continue to evolve.

Vacation home planning Whether you already own a vacation home – or you’re just thinking about it – there are two key milestones you will encounter; purchase and succession planning.

Vacation home purchase strategies Before committing to purchasing a second property, consider visiting a few desirable areas for a period of time to test the location and neighbourhood. Once you are comfortable with the location and have selected an appropriate property to purchase, the next major decision is how the property should be financed.

If you require a mortgage, for Canadian tax purposes interest will not be deductible if the property is used strictly for personal purposes. To make the interest deductible, consider the following two-step strategy: Use existing cash or investable assets to purchase the property Take out a line of credit to purchase income-producing investments. Since the loan is being used directly to purchase income-producing investments and not the personal property, the interest on the loan is potentially deductible.

Succession planning In straightforward situations, a person often acquires ownership in a vacation property either solely or jointly with their spouse for control and simplicity reasons.

As people get older and no longer actively use the vacation home, they sometimes decide to transfer the property to their children. However, if the transfer of the property is not structured correctly, disharmony amongst family members can occur.

Here are some succession planning strategies to consider related to a family vacation home:

If your children will inherit the property and you expect it to significantly appreciate in value, consider gifting the property to the children today either directly or through an inter-vivos family trust if you wish to maintain control. Although this results in a disposition at market value, triggering accrued and unrealized capital gains to you today, it may be advantageous as future gains may be taxed in your children’s hands and probate taxes may be avoided. If the property is sold to the children, your capital gain can be spread over five years in some cases.

If the property value is high and you are over age 65, consider the cost/benefit of rolling it into an alter-ego or joint partner trust today in order to avoid probate taxes related to the property at death.

You may leave the vacation home to one or more family members under the terms of your Will. Some of your options include granting one or more children the option to purchase the property, allowing a child to take the property as part of their share in the estate or creating a testamentary trust to hold the vacation home under the terms of your Will. If the vacation home is transferred to a testamentary spousal trust, the capital gains taxes can be payable upon the death of the last spouse.

Life insurance can be used to pay any capital gains taxes realized as a result of the deemed disposition of the property on your death. It also creates a pool of funds to pay children who are not interested in inheriting the property. In addition,

life insurance can be used to provide the children with the money necessary to pay for the maintenance and expenses related to the property.

If more than one child will own the property, they can enter into a co-ownership agreement to determine when and how they can use it, as well as how expenses will be paid.

Deutsche in Nova Scotia

Entdecker, Einwanderer und Touristen

Ein Wikinger namens Tyrkir war vermutlich der erste Deutsche, der Nordamerika erreichte, als er um das Jahr 1000 an der Expedition Leif Erikssons auf der Suche nach neuen Ländern teilnahm. In der Grœnlendinga Saga, enthalten in einer isländischen Handschrift aus dem 14. Jahrhundert, wird berichtet, wie Tyrkir angetrunken von einem Spaziergang zurückkam. Er hatte Weintrauben gefunden, die er aus seiner deutschen Heimat bestens kannte. Dieses Ereignis soll der Anlass gewesen sein, das neu gefundene Land Vinland zu nennen. Bis heute ist nicht geklärt, wo sich in Atlantik-Kanada Vinland befindet. Nur in L’Anse aux Meadows im Norden von Neufundland hat man bisher Überreste einer Wikingersiedlung ausgegraben. Wein wächst in Neufundland jedoch nicht, aber in Nova Scotia.

Halifax - das Tor zum Atlantik 1000 Jahre später kommen die meisten Besucher aus Deutschland nicht mehr mit dem Schiff, sondern landen nach einem sechs- bis siebenstündigen Flug in Halifax, der Hauptstadt Nova Scotias. Bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit ist die alte Zitadelle auf einem Hügel über der Stadt, wo im Sommer die „Pipers and Drummers“, Dudelsackspieler und Trommler, in Uniformen des 78. Highland Regiments, aufziehen, um das tägliche Ritual des „Noon guns“, des Kanonenschusses um 12.00 Uhr Mittag, einzuleiten.

Der infernalische Knall ist in der ganzen Innenstadt zu hören. Halifax wurde durch zwei dramatische Ereignisse mit historischen Dimensionen bekannt: den Untergang der Titanic im Jahr 1912 und die Halifax Explosion von 1917. Das „Maritime Museum of the Atlantic“ an der Waterfront zeigt eine

Dauerausstellung zur Titanic-Katastrophe, deren Opfer auf den Friedhöfen von Halifax ruhen. Viele originale Ausrüstungsgegenstände des „unsinkbaren“ Schiffes sind im Museum zu sehen. Hier sind auch Details zur Katastrophe der Halifax-Explosion von 1917 zu erfahren, bei der es infolge menschlichen Versagens zum Zusammenstoß zweier Schiffe im Hafen kam, eins davon voll mit Sprengstoff. Die Explosion zerstörte weite Teile der Innenstadt und kostete 2000 Menschen das Leben. Heute ist von diesen Schäden kaum noch etwas zu sehen. Im Sommer zieht ein nicht abreißender Strom von Touristen durch das Zentrum und besonders entlang der Waterfront, vorbei an den vielen Gaststätten, Geschäften und Anlegestellen der Schiffe, die auf Gäste für Hafenrundfahrten oder Walbeobachtungen warten.

Halifax liegt an einem großen Naturhafen an der

Atlantikküste. Hier landeten um 1750 dreitausend deutsche Einwanderer, die den Versprechungen der britischen Anwerber gefolgt waren und auf genügend Farmland und bessere Lebensbedingungen für ihre Familien hofften. Aus der Zeit dieser ersten deutschen Einwanderer stammt die St. George’s Church in Halifax, die erste lutherische Kirche in Kanada. Auf dem Friedhof kann man noch heute Gräber mit deutschen Namen wie Merkel, Merklin oder Bauer entdecken. Der Wetterhahn auf dem Kirchturm zeigt die deutschen Bezeichnungen der Himmelsrichtungen: N, O, S und W. Straßennamen wie Brunswick (Braunschweig) Street, Gottingen (Göttingen) Street oder Dresden Row verweisen auf die deutschen Einwanderer. Die meisten der sogenannten „Foreign Protestants“ verließen Halifax bald wieder und zogen einige Meeresbuchten weiter nach Westen, wo sie endlich das sehnsüchtig erwartete Land erhalten sollten.

Weiter geht es über Chester und Mahone Bay nach Lunenburg, gegründet durch die 1753 aus Halifax kommenden deutsprachigen Einwanderer und heute UNESCO Welterbe. Der Name der Stadt wurde nicht nach dem Heimatort der Neusiedler, sondern zu Ehren von George II., König von Großbritannien, gewählt, der dem Haus Hannover entstammte und gleichzeitig Herzog zu Braunschweig und Lüneburg war.

Lunenburgs Altstadt

Fährt man heute mit dem Auto die Lighthouse Route entlang der South Shore Nova Scotias nach Westen, erreicht man in dem kleinen Fischerdorf Peggy’s Cove den berühmtesten Leuchtturm Kanadas. Auf einem großen, hellen, in das Meer ragenden Granitfelsen stehend, ist er zu jeder Tages- oder Jahreszeit ein lohnendes Ziel für die Kameras der Touristen aus aller Welt. Leider ist der Ort im Sommer sehr überlaufen; man sollte ihn unbedingt in den frühen Morgenstunden oder am Abend besuchen, denn dann gibt es auch das bessere Licht für schöne Fotos.

Lunenburg ist eine am Schreibtisch entstandene Modellstadt. Die Straßen in „Old Town“ verlaufen daher noch heute schnurgerade, jedoch sind einige von ihnen so steil, dass selbst der geübte Fußgänger außer Atem geraten kann. Die britischen Beamten hatten ein Straßennetz entworfen, das aus sieben Straßen in Nord-Süd-Ausrichtung und im rechten Winkel dazu neun Straßen in Ost-West-Ausrichtung bestand. Jeder der entstandenen Blocks wurde in 14 Grundstücke eingeteilt, womit jede Familie der Erstsiedler vereinbarungsgemäß ein Stadtgrundstück erhielt. Deutsche Familiennamen wie Zwicker, Wentzel, Kaulbach, Conrad, Himmelmann oder Weihnacht künden noch heute davon.

Schiffbau und Fischerei An einem schönen vom Atlantik zurückgesetzten Naturhafen gelegen, ist Lunenburg eine bezaubernde Kleinstadt voller Farben, Kultur und Geschichte. Viele der Holzhäuser aus dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert sind in wohlgepflegtem Zustand erhalten. Lunenburg hat eine erfolgreiche Geschichte als Schiffbau- und Fischereiort. Heute fehlen jedoch die vielen Schiffe, die noch vor einigen Jahrzehnten die Bucht zu einem vielbeschäftigten Hafen zum Umschlag von Holz, Fisch und im Austausch dafür von Gütern aus der Karibik machten. Zu Zeiten der Prohibition in den USA gehörte Alkohol zu den erfolgreichsten Handelsgütern.

Bekannt wurde Lunenburg jedoch durch den Schiffbau. Mehrere Werften verschafften den Einwohnern Jobs und gutes Einkommen. Bekanntestes Beispiel für einen Schoner aus Lunenburg ist der Zweimaster „Bluenose“, seinerzeit der schnellste Schoner an der Ostküste Nordamerikas. Seit vielen Jahren ziert die Bluenose die 10-Cent-Münze Kanadas und dürfte damit jedem Touristen bekannt sein. Die Replica „Bluenose II“ wird zur Zeit in Lunenburg generalüberholt. Über den Baufortschritt kann man sich per Webcam im Internet informieren. Bald wird die Bluenose wieder als Markenzeichen für Nova Scotia und seine stolze maritime Geschichte übers Meer segeln.

Spuren deutschsprachiger Siedler Lunenburg war im 18. Jahrhundert die nördlichste deutsche Niederlassung in Amerika. Viele Traditionen und auch die Sprache der Einwanderer überlebten einige Jahrzehnte. Bis zum Anfang des 20.

Jahrhunderts wurde in wenigen Familien noch deutsch gesprochen. Einige Ortsbezeichnungen in Lunenburg und Umgebung verweisen noch heute auf deutsche Ursprünge, wie Conrad Hill, Kaulback Head, Meisners Beach, Heckmans Island oder Wentzell Lake. Wer aufmerksam durch die Altstadt schlendert, wird auf

eines der interessantesten Gebäude der Stadt stoßen: „Ältestes Haus“ steht auf einem Schild an einem Eckhaus an der Kreuzung von Pelham Street und Duke Street. Es ist das sogenannte Romkey House, das um 1780 im „Coulisse“-Stil, einem aus Deutschland und der Schweiz bekannten Baustil, gebaut wurde. Für die Hauswände wurden dicke Bohlen zwischen die gegründeten und seitlich eingeschlitzten senkrechten Balken geschoben. Die Außenseiten erhielten dann eine Verkleidung mit Holzschindeln oder sich überdeckenden groben Brettern; die Innenseiten wurden mit fein bearbeiteten Brettern verkleidet.

Häuser im Coulisse-Stil soll es in Nordamerika nur in Lunenburg geben.

Viele ursprünglich deutsche Familiennamen sind inzwischen anglisiert: Aus Eisner wurde Isner, aus Rehfuß Rafuse, aus Weihnacht Whynot und aus Krause wurde Crouse. Man kann hier Schnitzel essen oder Sauerkraut kaufen und im Atlantic Superstore gibt es Bratwurst und Pumpernickel. Fährt man von Lunenburg in das weiter östlich direkt am Atlantik gelegene Fischerdorf Kingsburg, findet man Flurnamen wie Hartling Bay, Hirtles Beach, Felsen Kap oder Conrad Island. Besucht man dort den direkt in den Dünen am Strand gelegenen Friedhof, wurde man bis vor kurzem von einem hölzernen Torbogen mit der Inschrift „Der Strandfriedhof“ begrüßt. Auf der zum Ort gewandten Rückseite stand „Seaside Cemetery“.

Der Bogen soll wohl restauriert und bald wieder am Friedhof aufgestellt werden.

In den ersten Jahren der Besiedlung ging es nicht sehr friedlich her: Die Europäer waren natürlich nicht die ersten Bewohner der Gegend. Das waren die Mi’kmaq, die dort seit ewigen Zeiten von der Jagd und vom Fischfang lebten. Mit den aus Frankreich stammenden Siedlern, den „Acadiens“, hatten sie sich weitgehend arrangiert. Das Zusammenleben verlief relativ problemlos, was sich jedoch änderte, als die Briten die Herrschaft in „L'Acadie“ übernahmen.

Die Mi’kmaq verteidigten ihr Land gegen die neu eintreffendendeutschsprachigenSiedler,diewiederum ihr vermeintliches Eigentum übernehmen wollten.

Der deutsche Autor A. E. Johann schreibt in seinem Roman „Ans dunkle Ufer“ spannend und historisch genau über die Besiedlung Nova Scotias. Leider wurde vor einigen Jahren das deutsch-englische Magazin „Neuschottländer Bote“ eingestellt, in dem regelmäßig interessante Geschichten über Nova Scotia, die deutschen Einwanderer und ihre Erlebnisse erzählt wurden.

Fährt man auf der Lighthouse Route weiter nach Westen, kommt man nach Vogler’s Cove und dann weiter nach East Berlin und West Berlin. Viele Familien der zweiten Generation der deutschen Siedler Lunenburgs hatten sich hier neue Siedlungsgebiete erschlossen. Der Blick auf die Flurnamen und Grabsteine der Friedhöfe überrascht mit der Häufigkeit deutscher Namen. Die Conrads, ein weitverbreiteter Familienname in Nova Scotia, können ihre Vorfahren bis ins 17. Jahrhundert nach Kleinheubach im Maintal nachweisen. Die Ortsschilder von East und West Berlin scheinen die Touristen besonders anzuziehen, denn immer wieder einmal verschwindet eins auf unbekannte Weise. Dabei haben die Ortsnamen nichts mit der lange geteilten deutschen Hauptstadt zu tun. Die Orte wurden 1886 aus nicht dokumentierten Gründen umbenannt, früher hießen sie Pudding Pan (Puddingform) und Blueberry (Blaubeere), mindestens genauso interessante Namen wie heute.

Deutsche Einwanderer nach dem 2. Weltkrieg Einwanderung beziehungsweise Auswanderung hat fast immer etwas mit schwierigen Zeiten, bedingt durch Kriege, Wirtschaftskrisen oder religiöse Auseinandersetzungen, zu tun. Auch nach dem

2. Weltkrieg wanderten viele Deutsche nach Kanada aus, um ihren Familien bessere Lebensund Arbeitsbedingungen bieten zu können. Nach anfänglichen kriegsbedingten Problemen integrierten sich die Familien schnell in die multikulturelle kanadische Gesellschaft. Den Kalten Krieg in Europa beobachtete man nun mit einigem Abstand.

Seit vielen Jahren fahren Touristen aus Deutschland nach Nova Scotia – zum Beispiel an die Küste der South Shore oder in das Hochland von Cape Breton.

Viele von ihnen kommen immer wieder, mieten Ferienhäuser am Meer oder an den Seen im Inland.

Manche hat die wunderschöne Landschaft mit dem erholsamenKlimagarnichtmehrlosgelassen.Siehaben sich ein Grundstück gekauft, ein Haus gebaut oder übernommen und verbringen regelmäßig ihren Urlaub oder als Rentner den ganzen Sommer in Nova Scotia.

Das Klima ist angenehm mit vielen Sonnenstunden, denn man befindet sich auf der geografischen Breite von Südfrankreich und Norditalien. Die Anreisezeit von Frankfurt ist vergleichbar mit der Fahrzeit von Hamburg oder Berlin in die Toskana.

Community THE POWER OF

Like much of rural Canada in the war years be-

tween 1940 -1945 the Eastern Shore was divested of able bodied men. The flood of their return, many of them physically and psychologically traumatized, to an area isolated and bereft of medical facilities prompted the formation of a local Hospital Corporation. Under the auspices of The Red Cross and with significant community fund raising and support by the Red Cross Ladies Auxiliary a hospital was built on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. John A. Rowlings. On July 5th, 1948 The Twin Oaks War Memorial Hospital came into being, named for the two landmark oaks growing on the property.

In 1957 operation of the facility became public, transferred from the Red Cross to the new N. S. Hospital Commission, continuing so until 1976 when, with significant community funding, a new hospital was built alongside the original. It offered expanded services in General Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Chronic Care which have evolved to include Radiology, Physiotherapy, Minor Surgery and Psychiatry, an on site social worker and Laboratory/Blood Collection and a Collaborative Emergency Center. The original Hospital building was converted to the first Birches Nursing Home in 1979.

Today it welcomes 40 nursing home residents and private quarters for respite and palliative care.

The procession of small villages and fishing harbours comprising the Eastern Shore from Porter’s Lake to Ship Harbour and Tangier is defined by its unique culture and history and a dramatic landscape of watershed and ocean. At the heart of the region's own self awareness exists an abiding sense of community and nowhere is it more evident than through the existence of the Twin Oaks/ Birches Health Care Charitable Foundation in Musquodoboit Harbour.

In 2001 the Hospital joined the Central Regional Health Board and the Twin Oaks/Birches Charitable Foundation was established to create a sustainable reserve fund. Representing a legacy coming full circle the Foundation's newest member is Cathy Keizer, great granddaughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Rowlings.

Few are the individuals or families on 'The Shore' whose lives have not been touched in some way by one or both facilities and little can rival a fine spring evening on Petpeswick Inlet when the Foundations’s signature event takes place at the Petpeswick Yacht Club. This major fundraiser includes a gourmet meal and both silent and live auctions of items and works from corporate sponsors and the Shore’s extensive resource of artists and artisans.

The Foundation is favoured each year with the dynamic support of professional auctioneer, Blain Henshaw, while other highlights of the Saturday evening include a raffled treasure chest and draw for a piece of stunning custom jewelry donated by Charm Diamond Centers. The date for the 2013, 21st Gala, was May 11th. The 2013 season banquet was catered by Nova Scotia culinary star Chef Ray Baer after which the auction began.

Autumn can be Nova Scotia’s finest season and heralds the staging of the Dr. John Fraser Memorial Golf Classic in honour of one of the area’s most well loved and respected residents. Dr. John had a special place in his heart for The Twin Oaks/Birches and the tournament, held at his favorite local course of River Oaks Golf Club, attracts golfers from across the region and has raised some $140,000 for the Foundation since its inception in 1996.

The first 'No Supper Supper' took place in 2001, designed as a successor to the traditional Twin Oaks Hospital Supper hosted annually at the Eastern Shore Summer Fair. Originally presented by the Twin Oaks Ladies Auxiliary until the group's retirement in the 1990's this major fundraiser involved virtually every family from Lake Echo to Tangier and Meagher's Grant. In its heyday hundreds of volunteers canvassed the various communities and staged a two day home cooked country-style supper at the Fair, the dessert pies of which are still the stuff of legend. The last such event was held in 2000.

Volunteers were responsible for buildings Noah's ark. They are the engines chugging humbly along, usually unnoticed, that enable so much of what makes society worthwhile. Their reward is the profound satisfaction that comes of serving their community and an understanding of the circle of giving.

Staff and volunteers do the driving and all maintenance is supported through the sale of sponsorship panels. The panels, displayed prominently on the sides of the bus, are sold to businesses and corporations on an annual basis in denominations of platinum, gold or silver and additionally fund the Harland Dooks Bursary and purchase of special items for the Birches.

Your Wings

On B ig Tancook Island

There is magic here, on this little island where I live and many come to escape. It skips along the beaches and flows in the surrounding sea. It dances in the cool, damp forests and wildflower-sprinkled pastures. It swirls in the wind that either sighs gently or rages wildly overhead. If you are willing to close your eyes and open your mind you will feel it. And then, when you open your eyes, you will see it. Here, you can be steeped in nature with your senses tuned in to every sight, smell and sound. Here, you can be grounded and at the same time encouraged to believe in the existence of faeries and everything else enchanted and mysterious.

Magic is the island’s undertone.

Whether it is out in nature or inside the photo gallery I own and operate, I have regular interaction with the island’s wildlife. I am a nature photographer and an avid birder and I’ve managed to capture photos of 149 species of birds on my 550 acre island home over the years. I will share with you now some of the magical moments I’ve had with these little feathered creatures. It seems that as curious as I am about them, the birds find me a bit of an intrigue, as well. And sometimes when I speak to them, it’s almost as if they understand what I’m saying.

On one occasion I had a small flock of beautiful Red Crossbills at my feeder. These birds tend to be very approachable and I’ve often had them eat from my hands.

This day, my particular goal was to get some nice close-up photos of them. I stood beneath my Honeysuckle bush, about five feet from the feeder, and started to take a few shots. As I stood very still and quiet, a Black-capped

Chickadee appeared on a branch just above me. It tipped its little head to the side to get a better look at me, and then flitted to another branch a couple of feet away.

Here, it did the same thing; cocking its head to one side to eye-me-up properly. Back and forth it went for the next couple of minutes and as I watched this little bird I got the feeling that it was trying to decide whether or not to land on me. As soon as the thought crossed my mind, the little Chickadee jumped off the branch and perched itself on my head! There I stood … taking photos of Red Crossbills with a Chickadee overseeing the photo shoot.

On another occasion, a Blue Jay flew in through the open front door of my photo gallery. It didn’t appear nervous or distraught to be suddenly indoors, but seemed to be very interested in everything I was doing. For over an hour the Blue Jay flew back and forth, following me as I moved around. It sat in the rafters above my desk each time I sat in my chair. It tried out the tops of several framed photographs hanging on the walls. It even followed me

into my studio/kitchen area and watched me wash up my lunch dishes and coffee mugs. I spoke to the Blue Jay and told it that I would soon be closing the gallery and suggested that it fly back out before I locked up for the day. When I went out the front door to bring my umbrella in, the Blue Jay followed me out and flew away.

Then there was the Herring Gull who might have had a bit of a crush on me. Every morning for about two weeks, from the top of a power pole it would watch and wait for me to leave my house to open the gallery two-doors-down. It would fly down the road above me and sit on the peak of the roof as I unlocked the front door and propped it open for the day. The Gull would then fly down to the ground and pluck a beak-full of grass and twigs from the roadside, bring them to my open front door and pace back and forth a few times before leaving the bouquet on my doorstep. To this day I wonder whether the Gull was courting me or hoping I’d reward his efforts with a tasty morsel of some sort.

A few years ago, and only months after I’d gotten a new camera, I spotted a Ruby-throated Hummingbird on the wires outside the gallery. My seven-year-old daughter was with me and I said to her, “Hey, Rhiannon!

There’s a Hummingbird outside. Maybe I can get some nice photos of it with my new camera.” I picked the camera up and went into the next room where I could look out a window, attached to which I had a suctioncupped Hummingbird feeder. As I looked past the feeder to the tiny bird on the wire I said aloud, “Oh please, little bird, come close enough for me to get a few nice photos of you.” With that, the bird flew off the wire, right through the open front door and into the room where I was standing! My daughter was stunned. She came into the room to see the little bird hovering a few feet from my head. So, aloud again I said, “Oh, dear! I should have been more specific. I didn’t mean for you to come inside, little bird. I would have been happy to

take photos of you through the window. But since you’re here, please feel free to look around.” The Hummer then darted off, throughout all the rooms of the gallery, finally ending up as far in as she could go – to a window with a red geranium on the sill. Again, I spoke to the bird as my daughter watched and listened with her jaw still hanging open in amazement. “I’m sorry, little one, but that window does not open. If you’d like to follow me to

the other end of the room I’ll open the back door and you will be free.” I then headed for the back door with the bird and my daughter right behind me. I opened the door and said, “There you go!” and the Hummer ducked out and perched on top of my barn board fence, giving me a few little chirps before zipping away. “You’re welcome!”

I yelled after her. “Please visit again!”

Maybe these are average happenings that most everyone has encountered with wildlife. But here on this island it feels somehow different. Having a wild creature, such as a bird, sit on your hand or approach you in a curious manner is, to me, a wondrous event. To observe and learn about these little creatures is part of the magic of this island. Every day of my life here is like a different reality; enchanting, mysterious and rich in natural experience. I almost can’t wait to see what will happen next!

An interview between

Martina Robinson & Frank Harmsen and Connect Magazine C: Guten Morgen Martina und Frank. Wie kam es zur Gründung Eurer Firma Robinson&Harmsen Lifestyle Real Estate?

MR: Frank und ich lernten uns im Sommer 1981 kennen.

Damals war ich schon zusammen mit meiner Familie nach Kanada ausgewandert, da mein Vater dort eine Stelle in Montreal angenommen hatte. Frank lebte zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch in Hamburg. Ich war zu Besuch in Deutschland, als wir uns durch einen gemeinsamen Bekannten, meinen Cousin, vorgestellt wurden. Wir waren uns schon damals bei der ersten Begegnung sympathisch. Es blieb zunächst bei dieser Begegnung, da wir beide ja bereits jeweils eigene Familien hatten und zudem noch in verschiedenen Ländern lebten. Erst 2005 trafen wir uns dann unter anderen Voraussetzungen wieder. Beide waren wir nun geschieden, um einige Erfahrungen reicher und hatten eigene Kinder – ich habe drei und Frank vier. Die gegenseitige Anziehung war immer noch da, trotz der vergangenen Jahre.

FH: Es war ein günstiger Zeitpunkt für ein Wiedersehen.

Durch unser Zusammenkommen konnten wir nicht nur etwas für uns tun, sondern es auch unseren Kindern ermöglichen, in Kanada und Deutschland zu leben, zu arbeiten und zu studieren. Schon immer verband uns neben vielen anderen Dingen die gleiche unternehmerische Vision.

Indem wir beschlossen, zusammen zu bleiben, legten wir eigentlich schon den Grundstein für unsere heutige Firma.

Es begann damit, dass wir unter RobinsonHarmsen Dienstleistungen anboten, um deutschsprachigen Kunden zu helfen, nach Nova Scotia auszuwandern und sich damit

C: Und wann habt Ihr dann damit begonnen, auf dem Immobiliensektor tätig zu werden?

MR: Ich hatte meine Real Estate Lizenz für Nova Scotia bereits 1987 erworben. 2008 habe ich noch zusätzlich die Prüfung als Broker abgelegt. Frank und ich haben dann anschließend unsere Brokerage „RobinsonHarmsen-Lifstyle“ hier in Nova Scotia gegründet. Dem vorausgegangen war die Gründung des exklusiven Maklerbüros „RobinsonHarmsendie Makler“ in Hamburg als Tochter von RobinsonHarmsen Lifestyle Real Estate. Seitdem sind wir in Deutschland Mitglied bei FIABCI, dem größten und ältesten Verbund von Maklern, bei dem auch CREA Mitglied ist.

C: CREA steht für Canadian Real Estate Association?

MR: Exakt.

C: Eure Hauptniederlassung befindet sich hier an der Eastern Shore in Nova Scotia?

FH: Ja, hier in Musquodoboit Harbour. Wir haben zudem noch Zweigniederlassungen an der South Shore und Studio Offices in anderen Regionen Nova Scotias. Wir kooperieren ausserdem mit Maklerbüros in Florida, Österreich und in diversen Bundesländern in Deutschland.

C: Und nicht zu vergessen die Hamburger Firma. Ein bemerkenswertes Wachstum in dieser kurzen Zeit.

MR: Das ist sicher richtig, angesichts des leicht progressiven Marktes vielleicht aber eher eine sich anbietende Entwicklung.

C: Viele Dinge, auf die es gleichzeitig zu achten gilt, eine sehr große Herausforderung.

MR: Absolut. Wir sind schon ganz schön eingespannt, aber es ist auch ein großartiges Tätigkeitsfeld mit viel Spaß und schönen Erfolgserlebnissen.

C: Wenn man die Biographien Eurer REALTOR® liest, dann fällt einem auf, dass alle mindestens zweisprachig sind und sie durchweg bemerkenswerte Lebensläufe haben.

MR: Allerdings. Die Ausbildung ist nur ein Baustein, um erfolgreich im Real Estate zu sein. Mindestens ebenso wichtig ist, dass man ein Gespür für die Wünsche der Kunden hat und mit Empathie arbeitet, um so einen optimalen Service für unsere Kunden liefern zu können.

Neben der fachlichen Kompetenz ist diese Seite ausschlaggebend, wir arbeiten schließlich mit Menschen für Menschen. Daher sind wir auch sehr stolz auf die sehr unterschiedlichen Lebenserfahrungen unserer Mitarbeiter, die wir unter dem Dach von RobinsonHarmsen vereinen.

C: Welche besonderen Fähigkeiten zeichnen Euch für diese Arbeit aus?

C: Good morning, Martina and Frank. Can you give us a bit of personal history leading up to the creation of Robinson/Harmsen Realty?

MR: Certainly. Frank and I were first introduced in the early 80’s through a mutual acquaintance, a cousin of mine. I had already moved to Canada because of my father’s transfer to Montreal and Frank was still living in Hamburg where I happened to be visiting. I think there was an immediate attraction but we each had our own lives and families well underway at the time so it wasn’t until 2005 when we encountered one another again. We both had divorces under our belts by then and children as well .. 3 of mine and Frank has 4 .. but the attraction remained.

FH: Combining our worlds seemed natural and allowed our children to live, work and study in both Germany and Canada. We share an entrepreneurial spirit and the first incarnation of RobinsonHarmsen as a facilitating body for Translation/Immigration and Relocation of German speaking people to Nova Scotia was born from that.

C: And when did the business evolve to include Real Estate marketing and sales?

MR: Well, I had already obtained my Real Estate license in Nova Scotia shortly before the birth of my son in 1987.

I subsequently restudied for a Brokers license in 2008 and Frank and I incorporated our Brokerage in the province. Previous to that was the establishment of the exclusive Brokerage firm of RobinsonHarmsen, die Makler in Hamburg. We are a current Member in Good Standing with FIABCI in Germany, the largest and oldest Real Estate association in the world, of which the CREA is also a member.

C: That’s the Canadian Real Estate Association?

MR: Yes. C: And your head office is here on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia?

FH: Here in Musquodoboit Harbour, yes. We also have registered offices on the South Shore and studio offices in diverse regions of the Province as well as an associate office in Florida and Austria as well as the South of Germany.

C: And the original Brokerage firm in Hamburg .. impressive growth for such a short period of time.

MR: I suppose so, although actually it's been a relatively smooth progression .. a natural evolution.

C: Still, a lot to keep track of ..

MR: Certainly, yes, it keeps us busy. But it can also be a great deal of fun and very satisfying.

C: I’ve read the bios for your REALTORS®. Most speak at least two languages and they appear to be a particularly well educated group.

FH: (Lacht) Ich glaube Martina wird mir zustimmen, dass ich der bessere Manager bin.

MR: Nicht nur das, Frank ist auch ein sehr guter Lehrer.

Er versteht es, den Leuten zu helfen, ihre Wünsche zu erkennen, sie in Ziele zu fassen und dann zu realisieren.

Alles auf einer sehr logischen und sachlichen Ebene.

Ich bin besser auf Seiten der emotionalen Intelligenz. Ich kann mich sehr gut in die Kunden hineinversetzen, lese oft zwischen den Zeilen und erfahre so mehr, als sie durch das eigentlich Gesagte ausdrücken. Zusammen können wir so unseren Kunden eine optimale Serviceleistung bieten.

FH: Martina hat ein ausgesprochen gutes Geschick, das Große Ganze zu sehen, Entwicklungen vorauszuahnen und Alternativen zu sehen. Alles natürlich unter Einbeziehung der Kunden und ihrer Wünsche, um sie dann in die richtige Richtung zu begleiten.

MR: (Lacht) Das ist dann der Punkt, wenn Frank mit seinem Managementfähigkeiten an der Reihe ist.

FH: Nein, im Ernst, wir sind beide ausgesprochene Teamplayer.

MR: Yes, they are but it's important to recognize that education is but a single component. Real Estate sales and marketing is very much a ‘people business.” Success demands a unique skills set .. a sense of empathy and a genuine desire to do your best for your clients. That being said we’re proud of the depth and diversity of education and abilities our people bring to the job.

C: I expect you and Frank each offer your own particular talents to the mix as well.

FH: (smiles) I think Martina will agree that I am the better manager.

MR: Absolutely, yes. Frank is also an excellent teacher .. his tendency is to guide people towards an understanding, to a realization of their own goals or a mutually advantageous goal. A calm and measured approach. A very intellectual logic whereas my logic comes from a more intuitive place. What’s considered emotional intelligence, I think.

FH: Martina has a knack for seeing the ‘big picture’ and as a result she is able to very reliably predict future outcomes and possible scenarios and chart a positive course in their direction.

Coming home... Entspannung nach einem turbulemten Tag im Büro.

Success is: Balance between work and play!

MR: Völlig richtig. Wir stellen uns gerne neuen Herausforderungen und suchen Lösungen für Probleme. Wir sind immer daran interessiert, dass es Lösungen sind, die wir in Übereinstimmung finden, was eine Selbstwahrnehmung eines jeden von uns voraussetzt. Ich denke trotzdem sind wir beide, jeder auf seine Weise, sehr extrovertiert. Frank der Spontanere von uns beiden.

C: Vielen Dank für Eure Offenheit. Wie kam es zur Gründung des Connect Magazins?

MR: Ach ja. Ich gebe zu, ich bin immer wieder aufs Neue begeistert von unserem Magazin. Jede Ausgabe ist ein neues Abenteuer. Das Magazin ist ein weiteres Stück Selbstentfaltung. Es ist eine Plattform, auf der wir Immobilien präsentieren, die wir im Angebot haben. Dabei achten wir auf eine deutlich exklusivere Form, um uns hier von den üblichen Werbeblättern anderer Makler abzusetzen. Connect ist aber weit mehr als ein Werbeblatt.

Wir wollten damit ein Medium schaffen, dass in unverkennbarer Weise diversen Profis eine Möglichkeit bietet, sich zu engagieren und zu präsentieren, um so zu einem

MR: Absolutely, yes. We love the challenge of a problem in need of a solution but it’s important that the solution arise from harmony and that requires a certain introspection from each of us. At the same time we're each, in our own way, quite extroverted although I think spontaneous laughter comes easier for Frank.

C: Well, thank you for being very forthright. Would you care to explain how ‘Connect Magazine’ came to be?

MR: Ah, yes! I confess I get very excited about our magazine.

Every issue is a new adventure. ‘Connect’ is another example of a natural unfolding .. a platform for marketing our own inventory exclusive of what’s normally available to local brokers but much more than that. I very much wanted to provide a distinctive and visually engaging cross-marketing medium that could appeal to a range of professionals.

C: A communication tool?

Bei der Vorbereitung einer neuen Ausgabe ist es dann oft so, dass sich ein rundes Gesamtbild ergibt, indem ich die sehr unterschiedlichen Beiträge mit viel Kreativität zusammenstelle.

Das macht mir viel Spass und erinnert mich immer an meine heimliche Leidenschaft, das Stricken. Vielleicht komme ich später auch mal wieder dazu, wirklich mit Wolle zu arbeiten, im Moment fehlt dazu einfach die Zeit.

C: Über Langeweile könnt Ihr Euch nicht beklagen.

MR: Nein, das können wir wirklich nicht. Wenn ich den Charakter des Magazins Connect beschreiben möchte, denke ich meist an Eklektizismus. Wir möchten ausgewählte Dinge der Öffentlichkeit so präsentieren, dass ein bunter Teppich vor den Augen des Lesers entsteht, den wir gewebt haben.

C: Martina, ich habe ein wenig Zweifel, dass Du für Deine heimliche Leidenschaft, dem Stricken, in den kommenden Jahren Zeit finden wirst, aber irgendwie erscheint es mir, dass Du mit dem Magazin und Deinen Ideen der Zeit ein wenig vorauseilst MR: Ich möchte nicht klagen, denn auch Frank kommt kaum dazu, seiner großen Leidenschaft, dem Fischen, nachzukommen. Die Kunst des Angelns hat genauso meditative Elemente wie das Stricken. Durch Aktivitäten dieser Art gelingt es uns, uns immer wieder neu zu sortieren und zu finden. Auch ein Spaziergang am Strand oder ein Lagerfeuer im Winter haben diese Wirkung auf uns und schaffen eine Harmonie, nach der wir uns ja alle sehnen.

C: Nova Scotia ist ein wahres Paradies für Angler?

FH: Das kann man so sagen. Es gibt hier sehr wenig Industrie. Die Natur ist hier weitestgehend intakt und unberührt und damit von unschätzbarem Wert für alle.

Letztlich ist das auch der Grund, warum so viele Ausländer hier gerne sesshaft werden möchten.

MR: Es verwundert nicht, dass, wenn das Schlagwort „Veränderung“ gerade in aller Munde ist, dies auch auf unser Klientel zutrifft. Es sind oft Menschen, die in ihrem Leben bereits erfolgreich waren, die Familien gegründet haben und die weit gereist sind. Diese Leute suchen nach neuen Herausforderungen und Zielen und kommen dann

MR: Yes .. but somewhat arms length from the actual Brokerage. That’s why we opted to create a separate marketing company, CC-Group Publishing Inc., that can provide for both professional and public. I am an inveterate knitter although I unfortunately have little time to indulge that passion these days so, for the time being at least, I like to think I’m knitting together each issue of the magazine rather than skeins of wool.

C: Lots of balls in the air..

MR: (laughs) Skeins in the air .. a delightful image! As it relates to the magazine the word that comes to mind is ‘eclecticism.’ The word’s derived from the Greek .. literally, ‘choosing the best.’ And that probably best describes ‘Connect Magazine’ .. showcasing selectively. Each issue is an exercise in picking the best, most appropriate colours and textures to achieve the particular tapestry we envision.

C: I’ve little doubt you’ll find space in your life at some point to rekindle your love affair with knitting, Martina.

It’s actually become somewhat of a trendy thing to take up these days so you’re already well ahead of the wave.

MR: Well, I certainly don’t wish to sound complaining. I know that Frank has little enough opportunity to indulge his own passion for angling. The art of fishing is much like knitting in the sense of being meditative. These are the kind of activities that renew something vital within each of us .. like a walk on the beach or a fire on a winter evening .. they foster that sense of harmony we all seek.

C: And Nova Scotia is a powerful draw for an angler.

FH: Yes, it is. There’s very little heavy industry. The natural beauty of the Province is truly amazing. Its greatest resources are its environment and its people and those are the things that attract visitors and inevitably encourage them to put down roots here.

MR: It’s somewhat ironic that at a time when the catchphrase ‘Reclaim Repurpose Reuse’ pops up everywhere, the attitude those words represent is also indicative of much of our clientele. These are people who’ve already achieved success in the world, have travelled and raised families and are seeking a new direction for their resources and experience. A lifestyle business or new home in a place that engenders their sense of adventure and the values of a clean, safe environment.

C: Well, since it seems you are the keeper of the crystal ball, Martina, I will direct my final question to you.

The business of Real Estate sales and marketing is undergoing radical change right now. How do you see the future unfolding?

MR: Mmm .. interesting question. Firstly, the basic formula

MR: Ich denke, dass sich der Markt deutlich individualisieren wird. Die Kunden sind zunehmend kostenbewusst, wobei sie gleichzeitig wissen, dass ein zu günstiges Angebot auch keinen Wert hat. Kunden im Immobiliensektor, egal ob Käufer oder Verkäufer, legen immer mehr Wert auf Auswahl und Kontrolle. Sie sind weniger risikofreudig als früher. Sicherheit wird groß geschrieben. Jeder REALTOR® und Makler, der in Zukunft erfolgreich sein möchte, muss sich nicht nur für die Interessen seiner Kunden engagieren, er wird sich auch mit den Trends und Vorschriften des neuen, sich ständig wandelnden Marktes auseinandersetzen müssen. Es wird also ausschlaggebend sein, eine höchst individuelle Arbeit zu leisten und Angebote auf die Kunden exakt zuzuschneiden. Er wird sich an den Wünschen, Erwartungen und Möglichkeiten seiner Kunden orientieren müssen.
