VIRTUAL CONFERENCE PERFORMANCE M A R C H 1 9, 2 0 2 1 | 11: 3 0 A M

It is an honor for our Duncanville High School A Cappella Men’s Choir to be invited to perform for the 2021 American Choral Directors Association Conference. Duncanville ISD is proud of the many accomplishments of our choral students, and we invest in our fine arts programs because we know those experiences are a vital part of a well-rounded education. Outstanding student achievement would not be possible without exceptional music educators. Under the direction of Choir Director Jesse Cannon and Assistant Choir Director Casey LeVie, our choral program has been recognized as a standard for excellence. In 2020, Duncanville High School’s A Cappella Choir was the only high school choir invited to perform at the opening session of the 2020 Texas Music Educators Association convention. Our choral department has encouraged our students to compete at the highest levels. In the last four years, the Duncanville High School Choral Department has prepared 22 students who advanced to the top honor in Texas — the All-State Choir. DR. MARC SMITH

Our students and their directors have been looking forward to this performance ever since they learned last summer that they had been selected. We know that our students’ ability to succeed, particularly during this pandemic, is a result of hard work, extraordinary dedication, commitment, focus and sacrifice. We are grateful to be able to share this virtual performance with our community, the state of Texas and the entire country. We know you’ll enjoy it. D R . M A R C S M I T H | SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, DUNCANVILLE ISD

Duncanville High School is extremely honored to have the A Cappella Men’s Choir selected to perform for the 2021 American Choral Directors Association Conference. Under the direction of Choir Director Mr. Jesse Cannon and Assistant Director Ms. Casey LeVie, our students have been working diligently since September to provide a phenomenal virtual performance for you! This level of achievement in the choral program at Duncanville High School is a direct reflection of the hard work of the students and the amazing leadership of their directors. Mr. Cannon and his staff have worked diligently to create a choir program at DHS that molds young men and women who have a true love and understanding of their art and are ready for whatever challenge awaits them after high school. Many singers in our choir excel academically and in numerous other campus activities — they truly exemplify the best of our school, district, and community. M I C H A E L M CD O N A L D

The Journey! FREIMAURERK ANTATE, KV 623 “L AUT VERKÜNDE UNSRE FREUDE” W. A . M O Z A R T/ E D . J E S S E C A N N O N I I Many consider Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to be one of the most influential composers in Western music history. During his short life, Mozart composed over 600 pieces of music. He is perhaps most known for his symphonies (40 in total) and operas (22), as well as choral music. In his last few years, he was commissioned to compose a piece for the temple of the “New Crowned Hope” Masonic lodge. “Laut verkünde unsre Freude” was premiered on November 18th of 1791, just a few weeks before Mozart’s untimely departure. This joyous piece is a proclamation of joy, and a proud celebration of brotherhood. “Laut verkünde unsre Freude froher Instrumentenschall, jedes Bruders Herz empfinde dieser Mauern Widerhall” (Loudly proclaim our joy with the joyful sound of instruments, feel the beat of every brother’s heart echo within these walls). ~ B L A K E M A U D L I N , S E N I O R M U S I C E D U C ATO R M A J O R , M I S S I S S I P P I S TAT E U N I V E R S I T Y T R I O: J EFFERY B ER RY J R ., J UA N R I O S, J ERO H A M O RT E GA FLUTE: TERRI SANCHEZ, OBOE I: R ASHA AD CALL AHA M, OBOE II: ARYN M ITCHEL, H O R N I : DAV I D L E S S E R , H O R N I I : T I M OT H Y S T E V E N S , V I O L I N I : T H O M A S LO V E T T, VIO LIN II: TIMOTHY AN GEL, VIO L A: M EGHAN BIR M IN GHA M, CELLO: VIL M A PEGU ERO German: Laut verkünde unsre Freude froher Instrumentenschall, jedes Bruders Herz empfinde dieser Mauern Widerhall.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) is considered one of the great composers of the Romantic Era. Mendelssohn is known for composing in many genres during his lifetime. Some of his most famous instrumental works “Lieder ohne Worte” (Songs Without Words) for piano and Violin Concerto in E minor. Mendelssohn is also credited with the rediscovery of J.S. Bach’s (1650). As an homage to the great composer, he wrote two oratorios, Paulus and Elias. His music is often praised as being a synthesis of Classical and Romantic compositional styles, combining colorful and emotional harmonies and melodies with the strict and symmetrical forms present in earlier Classical works. This style is exemplified in Wasserfahrt (first published 1840). Composed near the end of Mendelssohn’s life, Wasserfahrt employs a fair deal of romantic expressionism, such as the “wind” motif which is present throughout the piece. This wind theme can be heard anytime a voice rises and falls, imitating swirling wind. This is most easily heard in the Baritone voice near the ends of phrases. The piece also utilizes a 6/8 time signature, to give the feel of rolling seas which was a common practice in sea shanties of the 19th century. ~ J O N A T H A N H A L L & K E N Z I E I RO N S, S EN I O R M U S I C ED U C ATO R M A J O RS, M I S S I S S I P P I S TAT E U N I V ERS I T Y German: Am fernen Horizonte Erscheint, wie ein Nebelbild Die Stadt mit ihren Türmen, In Abenddämmrung gehüllt

SÉRÉNADE ITALIENNE E R N E S T C H A U S S O N /A R R . M A R I V A LV E R D E ( G I A M U S I C ) Ernest Chausson (1855-1899) is a French composer who began writing music when studying at the Paris Conservatory in 1879 after receiving a doctoral degree in Law. Chausson published thirty-nine numbered works during his lifetime, however much of this work is highly admired. “Sérénade Italienne” is from Chausson’s first creative period, which is known for elegant, flowing melodies. The poetry describes a night at sea under the stars shared between two lovers. Chausson uses an active piano part to represent the waves of the seas, while also showing the dramatic aspect of the text by using a concept of tension and release throughout the phrases. This setting, arranged by Mari Esabel Valverde, encapsulates the beauty of Chausson’s work through added harmonies that highlight the piano’s accompaniment. “Sérénade Italienne” captures the attention of a listener by applying the elegance and beauty that is unmistakably found from the Romantic Era of music. ~ K A I L Y N N A Q U I N , S E N I O R M U S I C E D U C A T O R M A J O R , M I S S I S S I P P I S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y French: Partons en barque sur la mer Pour passer la nuit aux étoiles. English Translation: Let’s go out in a boat on the sea to spend the night under the stars. Look, it’s blowing just enough breeze to swell the canvas of the sails

On the calm dark sea, look! we can exchange our souls, and our voices will not be understood except by the night, the sky and the waves.

HARD TIMES COME AGAIN NO MORE STEPHEN FOSTER/ ARR. NICHOLAS JOHNSON (GIA MUSIC) There is perhaps no other composer more synonymous with American music than Stephen Foster (1826-1864). Of his over 200 songs, Foster’s most well-known include “Oh Susanna,” “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,” and “Beautiful Dreamer.” His parlour song “Hard Times Come Again No More” was originally published in 1854 by Firth, Pond & Co. Its lyrics call for the “man-of-means” to consider the hardships of the poor. Johnson’s poignant use of close harmonies contributes to music’s impassioned mood as it approaches its climax. The moving parts in this section offer variation to the homophonic texture. Johnson skillfully uses elements of harmony and texture to kindle feelings of hope and empathy in the listener. ~ K A L E Y S M I T H , S E N I O R M U S I C E D U C A T O R M A J O R , M I S S I S S I P P I S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y S O L O I S T S : J O E L P O O L E ( 2 016 ) , R YA N S M I T H ( 2 019 ) , M A T T H E W M E R R I T T ( 2 019 ) , E VA N L E E F I D D L E: T H O M A S LO V E T T, C E L LO : V I L M A P E G U E R O, G U I TA R : A N D R E W DA N I E L INVICTUS REGINAL WRIGHT WO RL D PRE M I ERE, CO M M I S S I O N ED BY T H E D U N C A NV I L L E H S A C A PPEL L A M EN ’S CH O I R “Invictus,” composed by Reginal Wright, is a commissioned piece for the Duncanville High National ACDA Performance in Dallas, TX 2021. In this piece Wright powerfully sets the poem by the same name, written by Willam Ernest Henley (1849-1903) in 1875. The poem was written while Henley recovered from a medical procedure attempting to save his leg from amputation. The resolve and fortitude from that experience echoes through the text that is masterfully set to music by Wright. The opening of the piece starts with the singers speaking “I am the captain of my fate/master of my soul.” The piece builds a rhythmic and lyrical melody that sets the stage for the protagonist. Wright seamlessly weaves the text through a combination of dissonance and consonance to show the struggle and resolve inherent in Victorian poetry. The piece concludes the way it began, this time with conviction, that “I am the master of my fate.” ~DR. PHILLIP STOCKTON, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF CHORAL STUDIES, MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY C E L LO: V I L M A P E G U E R O, P E R C U S S I O N: D R E W L A N G COME & GO TO THAT LAND B R A N D O N WA D D L ES ( M A R K F O S T E R M U S I C ) Brandon Waddles’s compositions and arrangements have been published and performed by choral ensembles around the world, including the Morehouse College, University of Michigan Glee Club, Oakwood Aeolians, Westminster Choir, Brigham Young University Singers and the Slovenian Philharmonic Choir. “Come and Go to That Land” combines two traditional spirituals, “Come and go with me” and “Come and go with me to my father’s house.” This arrangement exhibits characteristics of the traditional African American spiritual, intertwined with gospel elements. Brandon uses an a capella texture to captivate the traditional spiritual style, while the broadened jazz harmonies and complex rhythms merges these two musical genres. The text centers around the overcoming of obstacles, and encourages the listener to keep the faith through the darkness. ~TREDARIUS TERRY, SENIOR MUSIC EDUCATOR MA JOR, MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY PERCUSSION: DREW L ANG

Brothers!

Going on this journey with each of you has been a tremendous honor. I want to thank each one of you for the hard work and dedication that you have exhibited during this process. Many of you have risen to the occasion and have been a source of strength, support, and guidance. This music will live in your hearts for years to come, and it is my hope that as you continue on your journey, you never forget the joy that you gave each time you shared the gift of music. Each of you have inspired me to be a better teacher, musician, and human being. I love and appreciate you more than you will ever know.

Journey on! A path awaits your feet and faith; and while you tread upon it think of nothing less than strength. Journey on! The path is sometimes dim but shine your light onto the bend and curve and forge the consequence. Journey on! May your hopes beget your dreams; Your strength be unremitting; May your light be bright and gleaming; your feet, steadfast and true. Journey on! ~ D E V O N D R A F. B A N K S
