March 2020 Dear Music for All National Concert Band Festival Attendees, Keller Independent School District is delighted that the Timberview Middle School Wind Ensemble will be a featured performance at the 2020 Music for All National Concert Band Festival. These musicians have put in countless hours of practice and performance time honing their skills, so it is truly a privilege to have this talented group of students selected for such a highly sought-after honor. I have no doubt they will shine when they perform for you today. KELLER INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS 350 KELLER PARKWAY KELLER, TEXAS 76248 PHONE: 817-744-1029
Dear Music for All, An opportunity to perform at the 2019 National Concert Band Festival is an honor cherished by any band, and on behalf of the Timberview Middle School Wind Ensemble, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the invitation to perform. It is an incomparable occasion both for the ensemble and the Keller Independent School District. I could not be more proud of our Director of Bands, Ryan Straten, for his hard work, dedication, and perseverance in leading and educating these wonderful students. At Keller ISD, we place a great importance on incorporating the arts into educating our students. We are so thankful for organizations like Music for All and their commitment to supporting and nurturing music as a vital component in education. We are equally grateful for its recognition of excellence and accomplishment, as we strive to instill in Keller students the value of hard work in developing their talents. Although we encourage participation, we also urge our faculty and students to challenge themselves to reach greater heights than perhaps they thought possible. Organizations such as Music for All functions as a vital partner in the education of young artists. As the Fine Arts Director of Keller ISD, my job is to remain an educator, while working diligently to be an advocate. Supporting Fine Arts teachers like Ryan Straten, Lisa Manson, and Khadija Merrill, who works tirelessly for their students, is the cornerstone of my job. The achievements of this ensemble would not be possible without the exceptional leadership of Mr. Straten, whose discipline, innovative thinking and love for music provides a strong foundation for his students. Ryan works hard to innovate the process of teaching band. Lisa is a hardworking educator who dedicates herself to the development of our young musicians, while seeing every child as unique and valuing them as people. Khadija has an infectious joy and energy and passes it on to the students she works with. Without Ms. Manson and Mrs. Merrill this honor would not be possible. We are thrilled to see their efforts being recognized. Once again, thank you so very much for honoring the Timberview Middle School Wind Ensemble with such a wonderful opportunity. With humility and joy, we accept this opportunity to share the exceptional efforts and enthusiasm our district has produced with other students, teachers, administrators, parents, and musicians across the nation. With thanks,
KIM BLANN
Director of Fine Arts Keller Independent School District
The TMS band program has seen tremendous growth and amazing success over the past two years. In addition to earning a spot in this year’s Music For All Festival, the TMS Wind Ensemble was most recently named a National Winner in the Foundation for Music Education's Mark of Excellence project. In addition, TMS bands are consistent UIL Sweepstakes recipients and continually place a record number of students in both the District and Region band audition process. The achievements of this ensemble would not be possible without the exceptional leadership of Timberview Middle School Band Director Ryan Straten, whose discipline, dedication, and love for music provides a strong foundation for his students. In addition, Keller ISD Fine Arts Director Kim Blann’s unwavering support and efforts to enhance the District’s music programs, as well as her passion for the arts, is an undeniable asset for which we are most grateful. In closing, I would like to congratulate the members of the Timberview Middle School Wind Ensemble for the hard work, diligence, and commitment that they demonstrate in both their studies and their craft; as well as express my gratitude to the Music for All organization for providing the resources necessary to continue enriching fine arts programs across the nation.
Kindest regards,
Dr. Rick Westfall Keller ISD Superintendent

by ALFRED SADEL/TERIG TUCCI, arr. by JOHN KRANCE – Grade 4
L
ola Flores is a Spanish paso doble and one of Terig Tucci’s most famous works. The anticipation and pageantry of a bullfight as matadors majestically enter the ring can be heard throughout the piece. Lola Flores was a dark-haired flamenco dancer who toured the Americas in 1952. She became a prominent actress and singer by 1965, having made thirty-three films and recording twenty-four albums. Among her many admirers was said to be the Argentinian composer, Terig Tucci, who likely composed this work with her in mind.
Shadows Unleashed by BRIAN BALMAGES – Grade 1.5
C
ommissioned by the Dover Middle School Bands of Dover, Ohio, Shadows Unleashed exudes a dark and mischievous character. This inventive work paints a picture of shadows moving into and out of darkness as they carry on a wild ritualistic dance. Playful at times and sinister at others, the haunting melody builds into a fury of harmonic and melodic activity. A simple piano part and vocal effects add depth and sophistication to this incredibly powerful work.
Lisa Manson, conductor
Incantation and Dance by JOHN BARNES CHANCE – Grade 5
I
ncantation and Dance is the first composition for band by John Barnes Chance. It was composed for the Greensboro Senior High Band and Director Herbert Hazelman and was premiered on Wednesday, November 16, 1960. The original title for the work was Nocturne and Dance, but when Chance later revised the composition, he not only deleted thirty-one measures, but changed the name to its current title. The “Incantation” section of the work formally serves as an introduction and presents a thirteenmeasure theme from which all other melodic material is derived. The “Dance” section begins quietly with the building of a complex and driving rhythmic pattern in the percussion. As the rest of the band enters, the music becomes more and more frenzied, continuing its wild dance with complete abandon up to the final measure.
On the Kerry Shore by JACK WILDS – Grade 2
O
n the Kerry Shore is a tribute to a beautiful harbor town in Ireland named Dingle. The piece begins with a steady percussion texture, meant to represent placid seas with a cool morning breeze blowing in. Small snippets of the melody represent the gentle rise and fall of the surf on the shore. A subtle combination of ocean drum and ship’s bell complete the nautical picture. On the Kerry Shore was commissioned and premiered by the Cedar Park Winds at the 2017 Midwest Clinic. This work is dedicated to the composer’s wife, Noel.
Robert Herrings, guest conductor
Suite Provencale, Movements I & II by JAN VAN DER ROOST – Grade 4
S
uite Provençale was composed for symphonic band in 1989. It is a four-movement suite based on authentic folk tunes from the southern region of France named Provence. Each of the movement titles is in an old French/Latin language called Catalan. Each movement reflects the character of the particular folk song. The first movement, “Un ange a fa la crido” (the plea, or appeal, of the angel), is like a bourrée, an old French dance. Movement two, “Adam e sa Coumpagnou” (Adam and his companion) is an old love song.
Dixieland Struttin’ by ERIC OSTERLING – Grade 2
D
ixieland, sometimes referred to as “hot jazz” or “traditional jazz”, is a style of jazz based on the music that developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century. The essential elements of this style of music with traditional front lines of trumpets, trombones, and clarinets, with ensemble improvisation over a two-beat rhythm, is captured in this attainable work for young bands by the composer, Eric Osterling.
Khadija Merrill, conductor
Carnaval de Brasil by MICHAEL STORY – Grade 3
C
arnaval de Brasil was commissioned by the Vermilion County, Illinois Catholic Grade Schools and the Schlarman High School Concert Band. This celebration of salsa music begins with an evocative introduction that is followed by an array of salsa rhythmic styles. Included are the mambo, the cha-cha, and the son-montuno, which differ widely. An equally wide assortment of tone colors and textures are explored in this work by Michael Story.
