musical
selections BURMA PATROL
Burma Patrol was in written in 1942 by Karl King, one of the most prolific and popular march composers. Part of his World War II “Marching to Victory” collection, Burma Patrol is a rare march as it is set in a minor key and brings back the first strain before proceeding to the trio.
MACHINE AGE Machine Age is unique and interesting for all players with its mix of rhythmic activity and memorable melodic lines. Chris Bernotas achieves a machinery effect throughout by using a variety of syncopated rhythms and staccato articulations. Every instrument carries the melody at some point in the piece, giving young players the opportunity to shine beyond their traditional role in the band.
I’M SEVENTEEN COME SUNDAY Originally scored for chorus and brass band, “I’m Seventeen Come Sunday” was written in 1905 and is dedicated to Edvard Grieg. It is No. 8 of Grainger’s British Folk Song Settings, and represents some of his earliest folksong collecting. In Larry Daehn’s arrangement the voicings and harmonies have been faithfully preserved for wind band.
INTO THE ARCTIC
Balmages investigates the legends surrounding the exploration of Antarctica with Into the Arctic. The slow, mysterious introduction shifts to a restless, more aggressive tone that straddles dissonance and consonance, reflecting both the beauty and danger of the icy continent.
CHORALE FOR WIND BAND AND MELODIC PERCUSSION Arranger Julie Giroux writes, “Saint-Saens’ Symphony No. 3 in C minor was commissioned in 1886 by the Philharmonic Society of London. Upon its completion [he] said, ‘I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again.’ Though there are transcriptions of the Symphony for band, I have always had the desire to present its melody in a different setting with a recap closer to the original work that would be accessible to younger musicians.”
Jim Casella’s intermediate-level percussion ensemble has the drive of electronic dance music paired with a half-tempo backbeat. Young players learn to play common funk rhythms that layer on top of an established groove with occasional rhythmic dissonance. Concert toms, snare, and timpani are featured before the piece culminates in a high-energy recap.
JINGLE BELLS! SAMBA BELLS!
SCUTTLEBUTT
William Owens’s arrangement sets the traditional Jingle Bells in a samba style. This beloved and popular dance form originated in Rio de Janeiro and is universally recognized as a symbol of Brazilian culture. The piece features percussion with an easy samba groove and then playfully passes the melody throughout the ensemble.
SAN ANTONIO DANCES: TEX-MEX ON THE RIVERWALK Lighthearted and joyous, the second movement of San Antonio Dances celebrates San Antonio’s famous Riverwalk. Frank Ticheli writes, “Picture a group of friends seated at an outdoor patio of one of the Riverwalk’s many Tex-Mex restaurants, enjoying the scenery, the food, the company. In time, the evening settles in, the air cools, the mood brightens, the crowd picks up, and music is heard in every direction. Before you know it, the whole place is one giant fiesta that could go on forever.”

directors DARCY POTTER WILLIAMS Born to parents who met in their beginner trombone class, Darcy Potter Williams is 100% a product of the Texas music system. Her own musical education began in her father’s band hall in Harper, Texas, where she spent her afternoons learning to play any instrument she could find in the storage closet while waiting to go home. In middle school and high school, she studied flute with Mr. Paige Brooke, a 36-year flautist with the New York Philharmonic who brought not only his knowledge of flute and musicality to the table but also a treasure trove of stories about playing under Bernstein, Boulez, and Mehta. Darcy received her Bachelor of Music in 2004 from West Texas A&M University where she studied with Gary Garner, Don Lefevre, Russ Teweleit, and Sally Turk. Ms. Williams is in her 12th year of teaching. She began her teaching career at Burnet Middle School in Burnet, TX, where she taught for 6 years. In 2009, her band won the Texas Outstanding Performance Series. After moving to Deerpark Middle School in Round Rock ISD, her band was selected to perform at the Western International Band Clinic (WIBC) in Seattle, Washington, in 2011. In 2012, Ms. Williams and associate director Jenna Yee opened Stiles Middle School in Leander ISD. Most recently, the Stiles MS Honors Band placed 3rd in the TMEA CC Honor Band contest. In addition to directing the Honors Band, Ms. Williams teaches beginner flute, clarinet, saxophone, double reeds, and trombone as well as assisting with the Symphonic and Concert Bands.
JENNA YEE Jenna Yee is in her ninth year of teaching. She began her teaching career at Clint Small Middle School in Austin ISD in 2007 before joining Darcy Potter Williams at Deerpark Middle School in Round Rock ISD in 2010. She opened Stiles Middle School with Ms. Williams in 2012. Mrs. Yee earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and Horn Performance from Ithaca College, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2007. During her time at Ithaca, she performed with the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra, studying horn with Alex Shuhan and under the baton of Stephen Peterson, Jeff Grogan, and Jeffrey Meyer. She was Vice President of Mu Phi Epsilon and was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies. She was also named the only Presser Scholar in 2006.
At Stiles Middle School, Mrs. Yee conducts the Symphonic Band, and assists with the Honors Band and Concert Band. She also teaches beginning trumpet, horn, tuba, oboe, and bassoon. The Stiles Symphonic Band earns consistent Superior ratings at the UIL Concert & Sight-Reading Contest, and she continues to teach and perform on horn in the Austin area. Mrs. Yee is married to her college sweetheart, Chris, who is the director of the Four Points Middle School Wind Ensemble (2015 Midwest performing group). They have two sons, Noah, age 3, and Ashton, age 1. Her boys constantly remind her that every moment is precious and to never settle for anything less than her best.
ALEX ORTEGA Alex is in his third year of teaching and second year at Stiles Middle School. Before joining Leander ISD, he began his teaching career at Bailey Middle School in Austin ISD. Mr. Ortega earned a Bachelor of Music from Texas State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2013. While at Texas State, Alex was the principal percussionist of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Orchestra, studying primarily with Genaro Gonzalez. He performed at CBDNA and TMEA with the Texas State Wind Ensemble. Alex continues to perform with Cedar Park Winds and subs with the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Ortega directs the Concert Band and assists with the Honors and Symphonic Bands. His bands have consistently earned superior ratings at UIL Concert and SightReading Contest. He teaches beginning percussion, euphonium, and trumpet. When not in the band hall, Mr. Ortega works with area drumlines. In July 2016 Mr. Ortega will marry his fiancĂŠe Christina.

The band program at Stiles educates approximately 280 students, with seventh and eighth graders enrolled in one of three performing bands, and sixth grader beginning band classes in a homogeneous setting. Since the school opened in 2012, Stiles bands have consistently earned UIL Sweepstakes, and they have represented the program well at Solo and Ensemble contest and Region Band and Orchestra auditions. In 2015, the Honors Band placed 3rd at the TMEA Honor Band contest. This is the Stiles MS Band’s first invitation to perform at a major convention. Through the commitment of students, parents, lesson staff and directors, the Stiles program is the latest addition to a tradition of success and high achievement in the Leander ISD band family.
