PRELUDE TO PARADISE C. Alan Publications, 2011

JACOB REMINGTON

“Prelude to Paradise was written to reflect my personal view of chaotic events surrounding the end of days as they are depicted in the Book of Revelation. I’ve always found the vivid imagery in this story to be quite shocking and powerful, and I’ve strived to replicate those feelings through the music. Although the piece is not intended to chronicle the story, some important events and details of the book can be heard musically.” The number seven is of the most significant numbers found in Revelation, and for that reason the piece is primarily metered in seven. There are numerous accounts in the book where “the stars of heaven fall unto the earth” and this is illustrated by densely harmonized, rapidly descending passages in the vibraphone and xylophone. Towards the middle of the piece, the symbolic opening of the seventh seal can be heard, as well as the subsequent “silence in heaven about the space of half an hour” represented by 30 beats of (near) silence. The second half of the piece depicts Jesus marching onto Mount Zion with the 144,000 who were redeemed from the earth, where he leads them into battle with the beast and onto their final judgements. Prelude to Paradise was premiered on October 12th, 2011 by the Texas Christian University Percussion Orchestra (conducted by Dr. Brian A West) at the Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, TX.

RAIN Tapspace Publications, LLC, 2013

STUART P. O’NEIL

This programmatic work for percussion ensemble and solo flute is a short study in minimalism and tone color. Rain, as it’s portrayed here, isn’t a drizzle or a thunderstorm. Rather, it’s a steady afternoon shower with a bit of rumbling in the distance, which provides ample opportunities for wind chimes, tuned glasses, and other effects. The addition of solo flute, which exploits the full range of the instrument is a little more difficult than the percussion ensemble as a whole, which adds an airy, distant quality to the piece. TANGENTS Innovative Percussion, 2015

JAMES B. CAMPBELL

James Campbell, Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Kentucky, has received worldwide recognition as a performer, teacher, composer, author, and is a respected figure in the development of the contemporary percussion ensemble. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree and Master of Music degree from Northern Illinois University and has toured extensively throughout North, South, and Central America, Europe, and Asia. He is the Principal Percussionist with the Lexington Philharmonic, drummer with the Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and Past-President of the Percussive Arts Society. He became well known for his association with the Rosemont Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps where he served as their principal instructor, arranger, and program coordinator. He has won multiple awards and has performed at numerous conferences throughout the United States and has composed many pieces for concert and marching percussion. Tangents for Timpani and Hi-hat was written for Campbell’s student, John Willmarth, to play on his senior recital. The “tangents” are the five sections through which the piece moves. Campbell labeled these as the Opening Fanfare, Guaguanco, Blues, Middle East, and Afro-Caribbean. Each section has a completely different feel and uses the hi-hat in a slightly different way. In the Spring of 2015, Daniel Vila performed Tangents for his sophomore recital, with Gregg Rinehart in attendance. Afterwards Mr. Rinehart approached the composer, James B. Campbell, and asked him to consider adding an ensemble to the composition. Mr. Campbell went to work and delivered a tastefully done quartet. DANIEL VILA, TIMPANI

EINE KLEINE NACHTMUSIK FROM A TASTE OF CLASSICS W. A. MOZART / JOHN R. HEARNES Publisher/ Distributor: Row-loff Productions, 2012

This ever-popular composition is Mozart’s final contribution to the serenade genre. We’re not sure why he wrote it. Nor do we know the piece in its complete form (it once contained a second minuet and trio that have somehow been lost). The work’s scoring raises further questions. Mozart’s manuscript says “2 violins, viola, cello and bass,” which could mean a string quintet or a string orchestra. (These days, “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” is most frequently performed by string orchestras.) It is odd that there should be such riddles connected to a work that sounds so delightfully unproblematic. At first hearing, as well as for the one-thousandth time, no music sounds simpler than “Eine kleine Nachtmusik.” But this is a sophisticated simplicity, which Mozart could

achieve only after completing some of his most complex works, such as the operas The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, the great piano concertos and the six string quartets dedicated to Haydn. With such experiences behind him, Mozart knew how to limit himself to the bare essentials and to say the most with the fewest possible notes. For anyone new to Classical music, there is no better place to start. The music student trying to grasp the elements of classical forms (sonata, minuet, and rondo) could hardly find clearer examples. And even the seasoned music lover and the professional musician must marvel again and again at a perfection that almost defies description.

THE BELLS Drop 6 Media, Inc., 2007

P R O G R A M N OT E S “I think of Fandango 13 as a virtuosic burst of energy from beginning to end. It was premiered by the Eastman Percussion Ensemble at PASIC 2013 and dedicated to those players who brought it to life so brilliantly: Brant Blackard, Chris Jones, Sarah Gartin, Connor Stevens, Sam Um, and Andrea Venet.”

WILLIAM BYRD / JOHN RAUSH

John Raush has captured the essence of William Byrd’s work “The Bells,” with this arrangement. The movement opens with the haunting sounds of two pitched gongs in C and D. The piece goes on to display an imitative texture through most of the piece. “The Bells” is structured in large musical paragraphs, a continuous motivic variation emanating from a single two-note ground in the bass. The work culminates with a tubular bell solo amidst a grandiose layering of contrapuntal texture.

AQUARIUM FROM CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS CAMILLE SAINT SAENS / MATTHEW MOORE Innovative Percussion, 2015

Written for keyboard percussion sextet, Aquarium is an arrangement of Saint-Saëns’ enchanting movement of the same name from The Carnival of the Animals. Musicality is at the forefront as players are challenged with complex, layered lines and multiple opportunities for rubato. Perfect for a middle school or high school ensemble. STEFFANIE DEAN, GUEST CONDUCTOR

FANDANGO 13 Keyboard Percussion Publications, 2014

MICHAEL BURRITT

From the composer: “The percussion sextet Fandango 13 is a re-working of an earlier piece for keyboard percussion quartet and from a larger work commissioned by the West Point Academy titled Four Points West. I had thought for sometime that expanding the instrumentation to include several additional keyboards, hand drums and tom toms would make for a more dynamic piece and could stand alone outside the context of its original place within a three-movement work.

DANZA FURIOSO JONATHAN OVALLE Tapspace Publications , LLC, 2013 Composed in 2012 and premiered the same year at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention with the composer as soloist, the work is a high-energy feature for xylophone soloist with a backing trio of three marimbists, all sharing one instrument. “My desire was to create a solo feature for xylophone that drew more influence from concert pieces such as Kreisler’s iconic Tambourin Chinois rather than from popular works of the ragtime era which are so embedded in the solo xylophone literature. In this piece I sought to combine the melodic energy of a work like Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5 in the solo part with the fervor of traditional Guatemalan and Mexican marimba playing in the marimba trio accompaniment, all with a bit of gypsy flair.” – Jonathan Ovalle

CONCERTO FOR SOLO DRUM SET AND PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

DAVID MANCINI

Kendor Music, Inc., 1988 This vibrant showcase for solo drum set features an array of popular styles including Latin-funk, Funk, Afro-Cuban, and Fast Samba. Naturally, there are numerous opportunities for the soloist to ad lib over an established groove and stretch out during some longer open solo sections. Despite the title, it should also be mentioned that this is not a multi-movement suite — once the music begins, it plays continuously to the end. JONATHAN OVALLE, DRUM SET

A B O U T T H E WE S T FI EL D B A N D P R O G R A M Westfield High School is located in Houston, Texas. In 1976, Westfield opened as Spring High School South taking ninth graders from Spring High School. In 1982 Spring High South renamed itself Westfield High School and became its own four-year institution. For more than 30 years, the Westfield High School Band has been one of the most successful band programs in the country. All students enter band in sixth grade at one of three different middle school campuses, Bammel Middle School, Claughton Middle School, and Wells Middle School, and begin to learn the fundamental aspects of playing their specific instruments. Sixth grade beginner classes are homogenous and remain that way for the duration of the student’s beginner year. In the student’s seventh and eighth grade years, they are placed into a playing ensemble where they continue to grow their individual playing skills and begin to advance their knowledge of ensemble playing. There are approximately 4,000 students between the three middle school campuses in any given year. The Westfield High School Band is made up of 120 members in 3 concert bands selected through a series of playing auditions. Performance opportunities include Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, and Applied Music. Through these various opportunities, members of the band program are able to participate in concerts, contests, recitals, and community events throughout the year. Individual band students compete in region, area, and state level band and orchestra auditions through the Texas Music Educators Association as well as an annual solo and ensemble contest organized and run by the band. In the past the Westfield Band has had an exceptionally high volume of All State Students, one of the highest honors for an individual student in the state of Texas. Private instruction is strongly supported and encouraged for every student in the program by both the school district and the band program. These lessons are a critical factor in the ongoing development of the young musicians of the Westfield Band program. The middle school and high school directors work together to recruit and hire experienced and proven private instructors who invest their daily working hours to educate band members from the beginning level though their senior year. The continued growth of the band program is heavily driven by the time and commitment from these individuals who are regarded as extended staff of the Westfield Band Program. The concert band program is the framework for the continued growth and success of the Westfield Band. Students not only learn ensemble skills, such as listening, matching and understanding proper balance within a section or band, but they are also placed into homogenous sectionals within each band before or after school. Students are given the information needed to continue developing individual skill sets on their instruments to aid in the maturation of each individual player in these sectionals. Keeping a regimented sectional schedule is an integral part of the band program’s fast development during its existence. All of the concert bands,

at both the middle schools and the high school, participate in the University Interscholastic League’s Concert and Sight-Reading Contest each spring and consistently receive high praise. The Westfield bands have become a consistent “Superior” rated band program and have had the honor of winning “Sweepstakes” for more than 30 years through their ability to demonstrate a “Superior” performance at both the UIL Marching Band Contest and the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest. It has been a joy to watch the Westfield Band mature over the years. The Westfield Band has: attended the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic (1992, and 1996 Symphonic Band), been selected as the TMEA Honor Band (1989, Class 5A), attended the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (1989, 1994, and 2001), received Sudler awards (Flag of Honor 1994, and Sudler Shield 1999), attended the BOA Concert Band Festival (Symphonic II 1994, Symphonic Band 1995), won BOA Grand National Championship (2003), and won the UIL State Marching Contest (1987, 1988, 1989, 1996, and 1998). The invitation for the Westfield Percussion Group to perform at the 2015 Midwest Clinic has been a dream come true for the program. The directors could not be more proud of the students for their hard work, passion, and dedication to music.
