president’s message

creativity and innovation were the hallmarks for giving to the Medical Foundation in FY 2012. Thanks to the imagination of our donors and their unflagging loyalty to the School of Medicine and UNC Health Care, total gift commitments were up almost 8%. This was our second highest annual fundraising total ever, exceeding our ambitious $90 million goal by almost $4 million.

What was so creative about giving this year? Among others, there were: • A landmark $10 million gift of artwork from Chip McAllister to benefit the McAllister Heart Institute (in addition to the Ackland Art Museum), • The internationally known CowParade visiting the Triangle to benefit the North Carolina Children’s Hospital, • Gifts for cancer research seed grants, • Gifts for nursing care innovation projects, and • Commitments to biomedical innovation. These thoughtful gifts from our many supporters, including grateful patients, alumni and their families and friends, not to mention the increasing numbers

of faculty and staff who give back to Carolina through their philanthropy, have inspired us with their fresh approaches to meeting the needs of our patients, students and researchers. Because of the continuing devotion of our donors we are confident about the future—a future that is full of creative possibilities—and one that is decidedly Carolina blue. In appreciation,

Dr. Hugh A. “Chip” McAllister brings art and science together

A

flawless Carolina blue sky and enthusiastic applause greeted UNC School of Medicine alumnus Hugh A. “Chip” McAllister Jr. (M.D. ’66) of Houston, Texas, as he stepped to the podium in front of the N.C. Cancer Hospital on April 12. Video monitors displayed a slideshow of remarkable art works, and signature blue and white balloons festooned the dais, nearby tables and a platform in front of the UNC Children’s Hospital entrance where a large object was waiting to be unveiled. The event announced McAllister’s commitment of $10 million to the University that includes a collection of nearly 50 works of art for the Ackland Art Museum’s permanent collection as well as funds to expand an endowment dedicated to heart disease research at the School of Medicine. As one of the most prominent cardiac pathologists in the United States during his career (he is retired), McAllister is accustomed to accomplish-

ments, but is not one for public accolades. For him, it is all about the work and the difference he can make. His brief remarks to those assembled revealed a deep and abiding affinity for his school and his home state, though he’d spent most of his professional life elsewhere. “It’s great to come back home. I deeply admire and respect Carolina, and I’m happy to be able to support its extraordinary mission to serve the people of North Carolina,” McAllister said. “Being able to share my love of American art while simultaneously helping to eradicate the most deadly disease in the U.S. fulfills a dream for me.” For the University, his generosity will enrich the cultural landscape and advance the frontiers of science. “This gift will transform our teaching, research and public service in multiple ways,” said Chancellor Holden Thorp. “It provides a new educational experience for our students and the entire community through some of the best examples available of American art and contemporary sculpture.

R eport of The Medical Fou ndation of North Carolina, Inc.

“Equally important, the gift will support the groundbreaking and life-saving cardiovascular research conducted by our faculty in the School of Medicine.” In all, McAllister’s commitment will include more than 150 paintings, sculptures and artifacts. The portion benefitting the Ackland Art Museum— valued at $5.5 million—is the single largest gift of art in the museum’s history. Pieces not going to the Ackland will be sold, with the proceeds—$2.5 million—going to expand an existing endowment supporting the UNC McAllister Heart Institute (MHI) and early career cardiovascular medicine researchers. McAllister also is committing $2 million to support the institute. He has now contributed more than $18 million to the University over the past 15 years, primarily to the MHI. “Chip is a great friend of the School of Medicine who deeply believes in and supports our faculty and students as they explore and discover treatments and cures for heart disease,” said Dr. William L. Roper, dean of the School of Medicine and CEO of UNC Health Care. “What is remarkable about this gift is that it will ensure the preservation of and accessibility to great American art, while also bettering the health of our citizens here in North Carolina and beyond.” The Ackland will add signature works by 19thcentury painters, examples by members of the Taos School and contemporary sculpture as well as several examples of American Indian pottery and textiles to its collection. “This art will add important breadth to our American collection, particularly in the area of art depicting the west and southwestern United States,” said Emily Kass, museum director. “These works offer students, alumni, faculty, researchers and visitors a new and profound experience of American art at the Ackland.” It was fitting, then, to unveil and dedicate a signature piece that had been installed on the hospital grounds. McAllister and the group gathered at the covered platform, and he stepped to the microphone.

“I’m told—” he began as the tarp was removed to reveal the large bronze statue, then added, “but with abstract art you never know—the larger figure is the father, and the smaller is the child. Information is being passed from one to the other.” The description was fitting as well. McAllister donated the piece, “Next Generation II” by Allan Houser, in honor of his father, Dr. Hugh McAllister Sr., who graduated from UNC’s School of Medicine in 1935 and practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Lumberton, N.C., for decades. Both father and son made significant contributions to and advances in their respective specialties, and lent their talents and leadership to fostering the next generation of practitioners and scientists. Their distinguished service earned them the distinction of being the only father and son to serve as presidents of the UNC Medical Alumni Association and to receive the School of Medicine’s Distinguished Medical Alumni Award.

about chip mcallister After graduating from Davidson College, McAllister completed medical school at UNC in 1966 and then began an illustrious military career as an intern at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. After training at the Armed Services Institute of Pathology, he served as the institute’s chair of cardiac pathology until his retirement at the rank of colonel in 1984. McAllister then joined the Texas Heart Institute in Houston as the founding chair of the Department of Cardiac Pathology and served until his retirement in 2000. To recognize his many contributions to cardiovascular medicine and to the University, the UNC McAllister Heart Institute was named in his honor in 2009.

annually in research funding. Executive Director Dr. Cam Patterson has led the institute since 2000 and has more than 120 publications to his credit. Patterson is a member of several editorial boards, including “Circulation” and the “Journal of Clinical Investigation.” He received the 2012 Judah Folkman Award for outstanding contributions from vascular biologists. In addition to his role at the McAllister Institute, Patterson is chief of the division of cardiology, physician-in-chief of the Center for Heart and Vascular Care and associate dean for health care entrepreneurship. He received his M.B.A. from the Kenan-Flagler Business School in 2008. Researchers in more than 45 labs at the MHI work in areas such as blood vessel formation, cardiac stem cells, genetics, blood clotting and metabolism to advance the care of patients with diseases of the heart, blood and circulation. The MHI has grown by 17 labs in the past year. Investigators include Dr. Arjun Deb, the first UNC winner of the prestigious Katz Basic Science Research Award of the American Heart Association; Dr. Nigel Mackman, director, the recipient of the highest honor from the American Heart Association for 8 An n ual

research in arteriosclerosis, thrombosis and vascular biology; and Dr. Marschall Runge, executive dean of the School of Medicine and medicine department chair who won the 2010 Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award from the American College of Cardiology.

About the Ackland Art Museum The Ackland Art Museum, an academic unit, serves broad local, state and national constituencies. The museum’s permanent collection consists of more than 16,000 works of art, featuring North Carolina’s premier collections of Asian art and works of art on paper (drawings, prints and photographs), as well as significant collections of European masterworks, 20th-century and contemporary art, African art and North Carolina pottery. The Ackland organizes more than a dozen special exhibitions a year. –Hope Baptiste This piece first appeared in the spring 2012 issue of Carolina Connections, Carolina’s donor newsletter.

The Silversteins Support Cancer Genetics Research

eslie and John Silverstein of Raleigh have volunteered for UNC Lineberger since 1988. That year, she and NCSU women’s basketball Coach Kay Yow were diagnosed with breast cancer, and Leslie underwent a mastectomy. Leslie explains, “I was asked to help with the luncheon by my friend, former UNC Lineberger Board of Visitors member Mary Anne Poole, who was the chair of the campaign to raise funds to start a breast cancer program at UNC. Coach Yow was serving as the

honorary chair of the effort. I was very interested and volunteered to co-host the event with Elaine Sandman of Raleigh, and others.” Leslie says, “Cancer has been a part of my existence since I was a little girl. My mother died from breast cancer at the age of 36.” The day after the luncheon, Leslie underwent a prophylactic mastectomy and reconstructive surgery at Rex Cancer Center. Not long after that, John recorded a public

risk clinic at Georgetown University Hospital. Her sister, Beth, was at UNC, getting her MBA. Beth was seen by Dr. Jim Evans and tested positive for the gene; Amy is negative. We knew the UNC Clinical Cancer Genetics Program was excellent. “ In the UNC Lineberger Cancer Genetics Clinic, patients and families are seen by board-certified medical geneticists and genetic counselors that provide risk assessments, counseling and follow-up care as needed, depending on a patient’s risk profile.

“We decided to make a gift to name a cancer genetics consultation room because the work is so important to us. The level at which Dr. Evans and others are working is incredible. We feel that genetics is such an integral part of cancer, and for some cancers, plays a major role. That’s what we want to support.”

service announcement at a Raleigh television station to increase breast cancer awareness and to honor Coach Yow. John says, “At that time, our daughters were 13 and 11, and I wanted to do anything I could to promote research to help reduce their chances of getting breast cancer.” Two years later, in 1990, Leslie’s doctors found a lung tumor. She underwent surgery, and was prescribed tamoxifen. Then, in 1992, the tumor reappeared, and Leslie had another surgery, leaving her with one lung. She has been cancer-free ever since. Leslie underwent genetic testing and tested positive for the BRCA1 gene. “I underwent the testing because my aunt and first cousin also had breast cancer and were tested in Boston and were found to have the BRCA1 gene. I felt that genetic testing was very important for me and for our daughters. “Our daughters, Amy and Beth, were in their early thirties when they were tested. Amy was already living in DC and began going to a high-

Leslie says, “Dr. Jim Evans, who leads the Cancer Genetics Program, was wonderful to us. He recommended testing for Beth. Beth now visits Dr. Keith Amos, a surgical oncologist with the UNC Breast Center, for a check-up every six months.” Leslie emphasizes, “At UNC, the patients come first. Cancer is a terrible, often debilitating, disease. The way in which UNC physicians, nurses and staff work with patients and families is amazing. They mobilize as one team to support and care for those who have been diagnosed in addition to those who carry the gene. That is what appeals to us most. “We decided to make a gift to name a cancer genetics consultation room because the work is so important to us. The level at which Dr. Evans and others are working is incredible. We feel that genetics is such an integral part of cancer, and for some cancers, plays a major role. That’s what we want to support.” –Mary Ruth Helms

HEALTH CARE EMPLOYEES GO (AND GIVE) ABOVE AND BEYOND

I

n 2012, the second annual UNC Health Care Employee Giving Campaign saw more than 200 employee donors give $90,827 to the hospital system – an increase of 55% over its first year numbers. This campaign is an opportunity for health care workers – including staff, faculty and clinicians – to directly support patients and families in need, further the impact of their daily work and contribute to the areas that are most meaningful to them. “I chose to donate to the Gerritsen Patient Care Fund because as North Carolina’s major teaching hospital, we care for patients and families from all over the state,” says Jay Pomerantz, M.D., “Many families come to us from long distances with limited resources as we care for their loved ones. This support allows us to provide assistance that betters their experience here at UNC.” The first campaign, run completely online during the spring of 2011, raised just over $63,000 and supported 17 different areas within the health care system, including the Gerritsen Patient Care Fund, the North Carolina Cancer and Children’s Hospitals, UNC Hospice, the hospital’s Employee Crisis Relief Fund and the Jason Kendall Ray Transplant Fund. Campaign—which allows employees to select nonprofits and give through payroll deduction— the Employee Giving Campaign is dedicated to giving employees the chance to give back to UNC Health Care specifically. This year, in honor of UNC Health Care’s 60th Anniversary Celebration, management offered a challenge: hospital leadership pledged to match every dollar that UNC Health Care employees contributed to the campaign, up to $60,000. Employees met this challenge and of the over $90,000 contributed, $60,000 was given through this leadership challenge. Employees were asked to give in 60th Anniversarythemed increments: $6, $16 or $60, with an option to give 16 hours paid time off (PTO). The response was overwhelmingly positive, and gave managers the chance to lead by example through their own personal giving. Throughout the campaign, managers sent emails inviting their employees to join them in supporting the hospital, invited Medical Foundation representatives to speak to their departments, and offered special recognition to employees who participated in the campaign regardless of their contribution amount. On March 28, 2012, an email from Gary Park (President, UNC Hospitals) and Allen Daugird, M.D., M.B.A. (President, UNC Physicians & Associates) kicked off the Employee Giving Campaign. Throughout April, a new video was released each week via Employee News Online, highlighting the impact of employee gifts. A campaign website was launched, accessible from the Intranet homepage within the health care system, where employees found information on

featured funds, how contributions would be used, answers to frequently asked questions, and were invited to enter a Weekly Winners drawing for prizes such as free parking and airline tickets. Employees were able to give directly through the website via payroll deduction, a donation of PTO or a one-time credit card gift. While employees were given options of all health care system funds to support, they were encouraged this year to give to the new UNC Health Care Annual Fund, providing support where the needs and opportunities are greatest. 56% of those who participated in the campaign did so. Areas supported through the UNC Health Care Annual Fund include expanded Family Meal Nights for patients in need, innovation initiatives applied across the entire hospital and employee development programs. Other areas supported through the campaign this year included a new stage in the lobby of the N.C. Children’s Hospital, allowance for providers of respite care through UNC Hospice, and support for the Employee Crisis Relief Fund—primarily assisting employees in instances of domestic abuse and natural disasters. The Employee Giving Campaign will kick-off its third year in the spring of 2013, and possibly offer a challenge in partnership with Rex Health Care. “Undoubtedly, our employees are committed to the mission of UNC Health Care, the patients we serve and the work we do daily,” says Gary Park. “The fact that they have taken the opportunity to go above and beyond that commitment and give back to our organization is a terrific example of the spirit, dedication and caliber of the people on our team.” –kali bryan
