Habitat for Humanity Helps People in Need, One Home at a Time Article by Mike Stotts Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas and its over 4,000 gracious volunteers have a noble, succinct and primary humanitarian goal in life: To help people in need, one home, and one family at a time. Since starting in the Las Vegas valley in 1991, Habitat Las Vegas has succeeded in constructing 105 homes to date (6 for the 2014-2015 fiscal year), helping 379 impoverished adults and 243 of their children, and substantially transformed people’s lives by making the dream of living a stable life, a reality through home ownership. One-hundred percent of funds received from its grants and sponsorships go directly to the construction of Habitat homes. “We offer families stability, security, and independence. When they come through our program, it’s more than just a home because they have all of the necessary tools to own a home, how to maintain a budget, how to save, how to maintain their home, etc. It’s providing them with a stable life and future,” says Cathy Vo, community outreach manager for Las Vegas Habitat. Habitat for Humanity and its 17 board members tirelessly aid people in need in other beneficial ways, too. For example, they provide their home preservation service called “A Brush with Kindness” (ABWK), offering painting, landscaping and minor repairs for homeowners in need. ABWK helps lowincome homeowners impacted by age, disability, and family circumstances, who otherwise would not have been able to afford the cost of repairs on their home. It’s full steam ahead for Habitat Las Vegas through 2018, with strategic plans now in place to build 7-10 new homes each year. Although home builds are focused primarily in Henderson’s Pittman region, they continue unabated with neighborhood revitalization efforts in North Las Vegas and Vegas Heights as well. And for the next set of homes in the

works, Habitat Las Vegas is working with its community partners to help eliminate, or at least substantially reduce, community blight in Pittman. MGM Resorts International, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo are major organizational sponsors that specifically support Habitat’s neighborhood revitalization and development efforts. However, much of the beneficial day-in and day-out work of Habitat Las Vegas would not be possible if not for the continuous outpouring of generous donations from many other donors and sponsors. Its gala’s 14th Annual “Home for the Holidays” was just such an event in October at the McDonald Highlands luxury home in Henderson of Ken and Michelle Alber. It further raised awareness and funds to help build homes, family, and community in Southern Nevada. Through Habitat’s dedicated 23 sponsors, the event provided relaxing holiday entertainment, mouthwatering hors d’oeuvres, and live and silent auctions, offering up the likes of home meals prepared by the finest chefs featured on Bravo TV’s Top Chef, to a Hawaiian getaway in Kuai, to a NASCAR package, to fine art from Peter Lik Photography, and even a private poker lesson from World Series of Poker champion Howard Lederer, among the many other equally tempting items. “Habitat raised nearly $210,000 from all sources from the event, surpassing its fundraising goal for this year,” says Vo. Also substantially aiding operations are its two ReStores in the Las Vegas valley, discount home improvement stores that characteristically contribute 75% to its annual operating cost budget.
