LOCAL INDIE LITERATURE Nascence is a science fiction novel that was self published by Clayton Oliver Rutschow, a Minnesota State University, Mankato graduate.
Independent publishing is becoming more viable for authors seeking to get their work read by a wider audience without having to jump through all of the hoops of the traditional publishing houses. Authors now have more leverage to publish and write on their own terms, so lang as the audience likes their material. Clayton Oliver Rutschow, an MSU graduate, took these same steps to create a wonderful work of fiction, telling the tale of a curious cyborg named Ferroc, who lives in a post-apocalyptic world and humans are becoming an extinct species. The story line seems like something written for great Japanese animation and readers will be taken on wild twists and adventures with Ferroc, who must seek out Earth’s last human beings. Ferroc has a number of very useful abilities including the ability to process information at super speeds, yet Ferroc’s last bit of humanity leaves him with nagging questions. Ferroc will eventually discover that he is a missing piece to a puzzle that could save mankind. Rutschow had a book signing at Barnes & Noble recently and his book is available for e-reader devices. Alan A. Larson, another MSU grad also completed a book recently. It even climbed to no. 9 on the Kindle list of Top Rated Suspense Thrillers. Larson penned, Mexizona: An American Dream. Larson’s character, Diego Cruz, explores immigration and politics at the volatile border area between Mexico and Arizona.

It was recently announced that the prestigious Gustavus Adolphus College President, Jack Ohle, would be stepping down from his post as president, amidst a large degree of criticism from students, faculty and alumni. What is interesting about this story, is not only the controversy surrounding the managerial style of the college’s president, but also the response it garnered in terms of digital communication. We now live in a world where journalism and transparency of information are becoming tactical and impactive. Students from GAC created a website to provide an access point to create discussion about the problems the college faces. It also serves as a gateway for students, faculty, alumni and the community to voice concerns and (this is where it gets interesting) leak documents relevant to the handling of the situation with Ohle. Students at GAC took matters into their own hands and tried on a local scale what Julian Assange had managed to do on a global scale. These journalistic students may very well be engaging in a new form of watchdog journalism that could change the face of local communities as well. It may, or may not, even pave the way for future whistle blower sites for college campuses, corporations, banks, local organizations, the police and even local government. The Gustie Leaks Facebook page and Twitter accounts keep constant feeds of what is happening with the President and even mentioned the fact that he is resigning. The controversy over Ohle’s leadership is definitely not news, but the way the technology helped to influence a mass amount of people and set off stories by the Mankato Free Press, St. Peter Herald, Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Gustie Voices student paper tell the story of democracy in action and freedom of the press at its freest and most democratic. It can be assured that the next president will either have to be more transparent than the last, otherwise face another round of leaks, letters, online comments and more, that’s right, news stories.

Driving down the winding roads of Highways 282 and 13, through Midwest swamps that produce cattails that dance in the summer wind, when your mind wanders and makes its daily inventories, healthy dose of daydreams and embellishments, you will soon find yourelf parked at a small highway stop, just before reaching suburban Savage. The building is nestled between the wooded suburban Prior Lake greenery that makes it a quaint quiet place to live. It also sits next to a popular bait shop. Prior Lake is well known for two things: its proximity to the Mystic Lake Casino and its beautiful lakes. In fact, the Cove is named after the Candy Cove lake area. It is not long before you seek to come in and see what awaits you inside this interesting little slice of the community. It must offer some Minnesota comfort and kinship! Welcome to the Cove. Brock and Bruce Larson had their unique, but starkly contrasting, careers before pursuing their longtime goal of opening an independent family-owned bar and restaurant. Brock was in the realty sector, before the housing crisis. Bruce was a music marketing executive with major record labels like BMI and Warner Bros. The two have ran the joint for the past five years, with success serving great simple and traditional American menu items, with their own zest and flair. [Continue on Page 12]

The Independent Filmmakers Project is open for submissions for 2013. Two filmmakers and one radio producer have just been awarded McKnight Media Artist Fellowships by a panel of national media industry judges. This year’s Fellows— who each receive a $25,000 award—have left a trail of accomplishment from National Public Radio to the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival. They are Todd Cobery and Susan Marks. This project is open to filmmakers in Minnesota who are indepdent filmmakers.
