a work of frightening fiction
It was five months before anyone realized I was gone. I left my apartment to walk down the street to grab a bite to eat at the convenience store near my neighborhood. It was one of those large convenience stores, with everything you could want at two in the morning with the munchies. I remember it was a dark night, quiet. A car came rolling along behind me. I could hear the whirring of the tires and see my shadow in its headlights. It was creeping along at a slow speed. It didn’t seem abnormal to me, but the headlights appeared closer to me than ever before I turned around to realize that the car was right behind me. I pivoted to move out of the way, and the car crept beside me. I could barely see inside the vehicle. But just then a face came from the window. In an instant I could see the mustached face of an older man poke out the driver’s side and quickly say, “Gotcha.” Then went blackness, after quite a painful, brief crack on the front of the skull. I woke up, what could have been minutes or even hours, I couldn’t tell, later. I was gagged with a bandana or something and my hands and feet were bound by zipties. I could barely move and couldn’t see a thing. I was crunched into a tight, dark space. After a couple minutes of barely conscious thought, I realized that I was inside of a trunk. I was in the trunk of this sick bastard’s car! Then, the pain started blasting from my head. Shit! This is painful. The smell of the trunk was foul. Ouch! Just then I cut my finger. There are sharp objects in here, for sure. Maybe I can cut free. No. Too much bouncing in this damn trunk. But I must act quick. These thoughts were racing through my mind a million miles an hour. Then the car stops. But still running. I could hear the ding of the door sensor and some classic rock music from the old shitty car radio the guy was listening to. I could smell a cigarette burning close by. I heard the jingle of keys. Damn. He’s got me. I’m stuck. How could this happen to me? God, I’m such a moron. The trunk creeps open. I see glimmers of light to expose the tools this freak will probably use to dissect me and wear my skin or something. Oh God. Oh God, Oh God! I can see hands, no just one hand ... and a foot .. severed. Jesus. Then I see the man smiling above. “Sure found myself a pretty one tonight. Ha ha. I bet you run like a chicken were I to let you go.” He grabbed me by the back of the neck, pulled me from the trunk of horrors and let me simply spill to the ground. The pain was more severe than ever in my gashed head. I could see the blood oozing to the grass where he lay me. I could feel him cutting away the ties that bound me. I know he is setting me free so that he may catch me again. It must be like a game to him. “Run, ya little bastard,” he yelled. I could barely stand. But what other course of action was there? So I ran. Not long after I was making my way through the woods, did I hear people. Thank God! “Help! Help!” I could faintly hear the man in the background. “Come back here boy, I’ve got work to do on you...” The people looked interested in my condition and sincerely interested in helping. But then, I saw the look on their faces. All smiles. What could be worth smiling about at a time like this. Then I felt it. It felt like someone punching me. But they were actually puncturing me. A stab wound to the back. I looked back to see one of the women holding a knife with blood dripping from it. “You’re not going anywhere,” she said. I saw the man coming through the woods. He was thanking the woman for her good work, while giving her an affectionate kiss. “Can I play with his brains when you’re finished babe? He looks like the type of guy that would have the kind of brain that would be fun to play with while he’s still alive. Don’t kill him til I get to mess with his head a little, okay?” “Sure thing darling.” They held me down, while I tried hard to fight it, but struggle was useless. I could feel the knife tearing away the flesh near the top of my skull. This was it. Torture. I tried to meditate to put myself in a better place, but the pain was searing through my consciousness. I could hear the woman laughing as I wailed in pain. I could feel the top being pulled apart. This was the most extreme part of the pain. I was close to fading out, but the woman kept slapping me awake, saying “not yet!” She ran her fingers across the top of my brain and dug in. It was like being electrocuted. Then I heard gunshots. Please one for me? Then all went black. I woke up in a hospital weeks later after suffering a coma. Turns out I was kidnapped by a family that had been trained for generations to hunt and kill strangers for fun. They were raised to torture their victims and evade capture. They also practiced cannibalism. I read it in the paper. “Stop falling asleep!” No. God no. It was a dream. A hallucination. Here I am again. Being tortured. Slowly. To death. There she was. Holding pieces of me, laughing. Holding them in front of me. I wasn’t bound anymore, but my motor skills were useless anyway. This brought them great pleasure. The pain. Not the death. Death was like coming down for these people. I think I’m coming down. Down. Further. I heard her screaming no, but to hell with everything. I must will myself .. to ... die. The end.

So Fresh and So Clean
Young Hustlas and Entrepreneurs
Maurice Pendleton opened a business in downtown Mankato with the goal of providing something for young people in the community and he has done it grassroots style. “We doin this from the bottom up, you know what I’m sayin?,” explained Pendleton upon my first visit to his store on Front Street. Longtime friend, Mike Madison, who grew up with Pendleton in the Twin Cities, is a full-time employee at Fresh Clothing and Accessories. “We came down here to open a skate shop that makes skateboarding more affordable for the kids,” Madison said. “We’re doing something for the community in the process.” Madison started working at the skate shop in June, but he has know Pendleton for many years and describes him as like a family friend. Fresh sells modern, urban gear including t-shirts, jewelry, stickers, backpacks, safety gear (helmets, pads, etc.), jeans, shorts, watches, fragrances and headphones. They also carry skateboards, long boards and even can order the fishtail style boards. They carry the needed parts for boards too, including bearings, trucks, grip tape and more. The guys are big fans of music, too. They sell CDs, DVDs, mixtapes and more. Their music selection includes rap, hip-hop, r & b, slow jams, gospel and other genres. They even carry skate magazines. Pendleton, who spent a majority of his youth years in the north metro area said he doesn’t skate himself, but is aware of the trend. “I got the idea from kids who wanted to buy skateboards. We just went for it.” The store has a friendly neighborhood atmosphere and is open Monday through Friday from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday noon to six and Sunday noon to 4. They have also started selling cell phones in the shop. The skate, clothing and accessories part of the business is only one side of the story. Pendleton is also quite the talented music promoter. He was involved with booking acts like Bone Crusher, who played at Buster’s, Young Dro at Red Rocks and other acts in the Midwest. His entertainment wing is called “Hit the Block.” Pendleton operates a recording studio and works on music himself. “We do all types of music,” explained Pendleton enthusiastically. They work with Pro Tools, Native Insturments and other software in the studio. They can also mass duplicate printed/copied discs for distribution. They do photo shoots and videos as well. They strive to provide an entire artist package. “This is all for the youth,” Pendleton said. “We wanted to have a nice local independent skate shop for the young skaters and keep it fresh!”

Featured Artist: Local Skin Inker Rob Foster
ber 2012
By Rob Lawson Publisher
Meet Rob Foster, a local artist that uses the human body and flesh as his canvass, immortalizing images and branding some form of identity in his subjects’ lives with his precision ink application to the skin. We all know this form of art by now: the tattoo. What got Foster into the art? “When I got my first tattoo.” It was love at first, uh .... poke? Tattoo art was something new to Southern Minnesota culture when foster began his career quest as a tattoo artist some 15 years ago. Foster, 34 years old, explained how it was still among the fringes of the culture at large then. “This was the ‘90s, when it still wasn’t that popular yet,” he said. “I asked a lot of local tattoo shops how to get into it, but nobody really had any advice, and nobody ever really mentioned anything about apprenticeships.” Becoming an apprentice was what Foster needed to learn the tricks of the trade and hone his craft and skill. After all, Foster was always an artist at heart, drawing and sketching many different images onto paper. He still prefers to draw the image on the flesh with a pen, even when going freestyle. “My dad was an artist, and I’ve been drawing for a very long time,” said Foster. Foster was probably the first customer at a shop in Rochester, where he became very good friends with the owner. This led him to become an apprentice there for two-and-a-half years. He finished his apprenticeship in LaCrosse, WI and stayed there for another two years. To become closer to his family, Foster came to Mankato. Foster has a 14-year-old son. Foster has been tattooing at Cactus for more than 11 years. His birthday is the day before Halloween (How ironic to be featured in the October Noir Issue). Foster remembers the heyday of the early tattoo art scene: “I kind of got into it at the right time, I rode that wave in and have been loving it ever since. What I really loved about it then was that people kept getting more creative about what they wanted. Everyone gets into it in a different way.” This is probably what makes tattoo art such a unique form of art. Personality and values seem to play a large role in the selection and creative process. Tattoos are very personal and carry much significance unique to the individual receiving the tat. It is up to the artist to capture that importance. Foster said he has tried to figure out once, approximately, how many tattoos he has done over the years. He said at Cactus alone, it is probably around 6,500 - 7,000. He averages about 650 - 700 per year. Foster has done his share of conventions, too, but he prefers to be close to his family and son. “I like it here. I’m busy,” he said with his signature smile. Foster’s style has been described by one of the shop’s piercers as “not old school, not new school, but right in the middle.” He likes to use lots of color and make certain features very exaggerated. He said he is heavily influenced by old cartoons like Felix the Cat and Tom and Jerry. He watches a lot of Simpsons with his son, too. Foster has done a lot of freestyle and custom work as well. “Tattoos with a sense of humor are always good,” he added. He likes flowers and animals a lot. Foster said his most unusual request was “a hillbilly making sweet love to a sheep.” Foster said genitalia tattoos are rather bizarre as well. He has worked on both genders. Tattoo artists are kind of like bartenders, dentists and therapists. “People tell me crazy shit all the time,” Foster conceded. “People are really free when talking to their tattoo artists. It’s great though. I’m still waiting for someone to tell me something really weird....” Foster said he has never done any face tattoos.

New Meat
Wiste’s Meat Market
Wiste’s meat market has a tradition of family atmosphere and local ownership and the Foels family recently decided to contribute to that tradition by buying the meat market in Janesville. Bruce and Tammy Foels bought the place and opened it up to the public just before the summer and the response has been overwhelming, according to Tammy. “We get so many different people coming through here, from Pemberton, St. Clair, Mapleton, Mankato, Waseca, just all over the southern part of the state and they really love what we have done with

the place,” Tammy said. “They also really love the friendly atmosphere here and they like to talk with us and the customers.” Customer service is a huge advanatage for this meat market that also sells many other grocery items in the rural community of Janesville. The foels’ children Mitch and Megan also both work at the store for their parents. The Foels were farmers and construction workers prior to the meat business, but as they soon found out, those skills turned out to be much advantageous in remodeling the meat market. There is a new floor and they have

moved many display cases into the store. “Come for the taste. Enjoy the experience.” This is their motto. Wiste’s has a smokehouse, where their own jerky and sticks are produced. They even recently received first place at the Minnesota Association of Meat Packers Convention in Rochester for their Colorado Jerky. They placed in the top ten with their bacon and beef sticks, according to Southern Minnesota Magazine. and more. Tri-Tip steaks and bacon wrapped stuffed chicken breasts are the top selling items in the store, according to locals. In addition to their own meat market and smoking operation, the store also boasts being a full-service game processor. They will work with venison, pheasant, carp, turkey, game pigeons and other types of animals. Just bring ‘em in. There is also a bakery available at Wiste’s. They can help folks with birthday parties, weddings and other occassions as well. Call them to find out what they might be able to help you with!

Goat Entertainment Promoting Music for the Sake of Music
15
Many people wouldn’t put the phrases “heavy metal” and “community oriented” in the same sentence, but in reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Just ask Ian Dunford, a local music promoter with his own company, Goat Entertainment. Goat Entertainment primarily handles the booking of heavy metal acts like show recently played at The What’s Up Lounge in Mankato’s Old Town District. “It’s just about the music for me,” said Dunford, who moved here from the San Diego and has been living and promoting music here on and off for several years. He said this is more of a permanent home now since about June 2011. “I love seeing people come together,” he added. “These people are from your neighborhood. Support them!” Dunford is enthusiastic. It’s probably what makes him a great promoter. Not to mention that he cares and is an extremely nice guy (breaking more than one metal stereotype, here). The show at the What’s Up included (by ascending order of set) What Lies Within, Plagued Insanity, Bloodgeon and Face of Oblivion. “These guys are all local grassroots metal bands,” said Dunford. “Face of Oblivion is the only signed band here.” Dunford has an undying passion for music. His morbid style accentuates the nostalgia of the Mankato scene some five to ten years ago, a scene that still seems alive and well. “I wasn’t sure if a lot of people would even show up here tonight,” said Dunford as What Lies Within shredded their heavy sound through crowded room of the What’s Up Lounge that Saturday night on September 29. “But plenty of people came out and I’m totally blown away!” Goat has been busy booking since last year, when Dunford began in the Twin Cities. He is a very big part of the underground scene, yet being the nice guy he is, he doesn’t make much dime doing the gigging - yet. “I can’t take money from these guys,” he said. “They’re just playing shows and still have to come up with money for gas, pay their bills and all that shit, you know?” Dunford’s band is Habitual Defilement. Their guitarist is from Germany, drummer from Texas, bassist from San Diego and Ian, on vocals, from Minnesota. “You gotta love the Internet,” quipped Dunford. Oktoberfest Info for Southern Minnesota
Oktoberfest is a tradition round these parts, and is quite a big deal in New Ulm, St. Peter, North Mankato and Mankato. There are a number of events taking place to celebrate Oktoberfest, a German tradition that traces back to Bavarian 1810. It is a celebration of beer and good fortune. It is held in Munich for 16 days out of the year in October. It is Germany’s most popular event and is the world’s largest fair. St. Peter held their Oktoberfest shananigans at the end of September, but the month of October is a busy time for parties in North Mankato, Mankato and New Ulm. Especially New Ulm. There are a number of activities going on in the area, that include live music, beer, food and much more. Don’t miss out on these events if you’re new in town or just visiting because you probably won’t experience much else like it.
Local Music Review: Seazon of the Fly - St. Cloud Rock Seazon of the Fly is an interesting rock band from St. Cloud that fuzes heavy stuff like System of a Down and more classical sounding rock bands like Tenacious D, and some elements, vocally, of bands like Ultraspank. They also have more progressive elements a la Tool or Queensryche. Their newest album is called Wonderfly. They played tracks from this album recently at Buster’s Bar and the What’s Up Lounge in Mankato last month. It is a followup to Seazon of the Fly’s last release, The Garden. This comic book-esque album features a full length DVD as well. Much of the music matches the colorful CD art on the cover. Tracks like “Calamity” (aptly named) embody the crossover between genres and the general playfulness of the band and their music. Combing metal, hard rock, punk and even some electronic, most rock enthusiasts with diverse tastes will appreciate this music. Wonderfly cap-
tures the imagination, then pisses and vomits on it, then cleans it up, swallows it whole and finally shits it out with sonic grunts of adulation. Here is the track list for Wonderfly: 1. The Beginning 2. Spectacular 3. Burial in Blue 4. Bag 5. Light 6. Safe? 7. Calamity 8. Anticipate 9. Yeah! 10. The Longest Silence 11. Dust (Remember) 12. Effing Ay 13. Your Own 14. The Bank of Time 15. OMGHDHDI? 16. S#!% Yourself 17. A New Light The band has been around for around eight years. Their last release in 2008, The Garden, is a double disc. One side could be considered their heavy side, whilst the other is more
elegantly acoustic and ambient. Try to think of the grunge years, and maybe Alice in Chains on a whole lot of pot. Side 1: 1. Fly Trap (Revisited) 2. Exile 3. Redline 4. Idiot 5. Ready 6. The Passing 7. Understanding the Fade 8. The Mess 9. Death of Art 10. Facade 11. Pretty No More 12. Paradise Side 2: 1. The Garden 2. Collapsed 3. Simple 4. Lemon Cake 5. Surface 6. The Lesson 7. Carry 8. Spun 9. Ruin 10. Kidja 11. Acid Rain

Theory of African-American Music 7:30 PM The Rev. Tom Harries
Church of the Holy Communion & Minnesota Episcopal Environmental Stewardship Commission Cell: 952-297-5856 Poet Phil Bryant will offer a series of four talks with discussion titled Body and Soul: The Intersection of Sacred and Profane in African-American Music Wednesday evenings, September 26, October 3, 10, 17 from 7:30 to 9:00 PM at Church of the Holy Communion, St. Peter, Minnesota and online at http://livestre. am/1e7Ed Online participants may ask questions via the chat function built in to LiveStream.com. Refreshments will be served at the church. These talks will explore the two great tributaries of African-American music, touching upon both the sacred and spiritual musical traditions, Spirituals and Modern Gospel Music, and the secular musical tradition, which includes Jazz, Blues, Rock, R&B, and Hip-Hop. We will examine how these two seemingly antithetical musical streams really interface with each other, and inform each other’s development throughout the long history of Black American music from slavery to the present. We will listen to to samples of great music, cover a little American History, and hopefully have a really engaged, instructive, and most importantly a thoroughly good time. Born and reared on Chicago’s South Side, Phil Bryant is the author of several collections of poetry, including Sermon on a Perfect Spring Day, which was nominated for a Minnesota Book Award in 1999. Most recently his work appeared in Where One Voice Ends,
