Traffic Signal Cabinet Mural Project

7

The City Center Partnership’s CityArt Committee and Twin Rivers Council for the Arts are collaborating to begin a new public art initiative in City Center Mankato. Applications are now being accepted for the first phase of a multi-year project titled “The Traffic Signal Cabinet Mural Project”. The goal of the project is to enhance the City Center Mankato by adding works of art to streetscape on existing surfaces. Artwork on the traffic signal cabinets will function as a form of communication to a moving audience with the goal of creating a safe, inclusive and interesting environment. CityArt and Twin Rivers are modeling their program after other cities around Minnesota and the Midwest that have adopted this type of public art into their communities. Artists will have the option of either painting directly onto the cabinet or creating a digitally enhanced image, which will be transferred to a vinyl wrap and professionally installed. Successful proposals will foster community pride and consider what makes Greater Mankato unique: the arts, history, music, community events, recreational opportunities and special attractions. Young artists are also encouraged to apply. The committee is setting aside one cabinet to be designed by a young emerging artist age 18 and under. All chosen artists will receive a $1,000 stipend. A maximum of ten traffic signal cabinets along Riverfront Drive and Front Street have been chosen for the first phase of the project. Photos and exact locations of the cabinets along with detailed information regarding guidelines and submittal process can be found in the Request for Proposal on the CityArt website, www.cityartmankato.com. The deadline for submission is Thursday, August 1, 2013 and a jury process will take place in early August. Installation of the artwork will begin in September. Funding for this project is being made possible by grants from the City of Mankato, Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council, Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation, Mankato Area Foundation and financial support from the City Center Partnership.

Arts Center of Saint Peter Receives $14,890 Arts Grant

The Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council is pleased to announce that grants of $61,890 from the Arts and Culture Heritage Fund have been awarded to five arts organizations in the region. In spring 2013 there was a one year initiative grant for established Arts Organizations that own their building and provide arts programming year-round. Five organizations received a Special Initiative Arts Legacy Equipment and Facilities Grant, for a total of $61,890. Each organization needed to describe how this specific equipment and facility improvement would create a legacy for the arts in their community and in Minnesota. The Arts Center of Saint Peter received a $14,890 arts grant. They will purchase four pottery wheels, an electric kiln, accessible doorway adaptors and new acoustic ceiling tile in the gallery and office area. The arts center provides gallery exhibits each month and operates a clay studio in the building which provides monthly classes.

The tangled history of the movie theater in St. Peter, which added a bit of character to the growing Highway 169 artery city between Mankato and the Twin Cities, shows how a changing pace in both technology and the economy (that actually mutually drive each other in their respective paths) can alter the landscape around us.

Adolphus purchased the ice machine for their own concessions. A county employee purchased a safe and a desk. The Nicollet County Fair purchased some vending items and a LeSueur popcorn equipment distributor purchased the popcorn machine. The county will be paving a parking lot over top of the movie theater grounds. The county campus will expand and be bringing in all of the agencies under one roof including Nicollet-Brown County Environmental Services from the Schaeffer Building and Human Services from the Nicollet Plaza.

As the digital age presses on, some businesses like movie rental stores and movie theaters just can’t keep pace. Here is the story of a St. Peter movie theater that sees its last days. Reporting by Rob Lawson Lawson Media 612-460-5851 editor@mankatogazette.com

The St. Peter City Council recently passed a resolution for the county to purchase and begin demolition and construction to the space currently holding the St. Peter 5 Cinema to make way for more government parking for the Nicollet County campus. According to St. Peter’s Economic Development Authority, hundreds of thousands of theaters like St. Peter’s theater will likely be closing due to the tremendous cost burden of switching from film to all digital projections, which EDA director Russ Willie said would cost St. Peter’s theater around a half-million dollars ($100,000 for each screen). The EDA owned some of the fixtures, while St. Peter Development Corp, a private group in St. Peter, owned much of the furnishings and equipment. FF&E held around $20,000 worth of investment, while the Development Corp held around $17,500.
