Summer Theatre Camps Announced and Seek Instructors & Apprentices
NUACT will present programs for kids in New Ulm and Nicollet this summer and is seeking qualified counselors to assist in the operation of two theatre camps. Applicants should have a love for the theatre, kids, story telling, and improvisation. This is a unique opportunity to work with the Executive and Artistic director of the New Ulm Actors Community theatre. A small stipend is available. The plays are in New Ulm, “Our Own Treasure Island” from July 28-August 1 and in Nicollet, “Our Own Peter Pan” from August 4-Aug 8. Both involve creating a play from the famous books using twists and turns that come from the kids. NUACT presented programs for kids during the past few summers at the Community Center on German Street but this will be the first play NUACT presents for children ever performed in the new Nicollet school auditorium. To register for the New Ulm summer theatre camp parents must go in person to the New Ulm Park and Recreation office in the Vogel Fieldhouse located at 122 South Garden in New Ulm. Good Day Sunshine: Good in a Very Special Way
Mike and Sheila Reinhart are the owners of the community created and locally driven store known as Good Day Sunshine. Started with little more than a security deposit and the first month’s rent, Good Day Sunshine is becoming a staple in the Mankato arts and music community. Good Day Sunshine is a store built around consignment from local vendors and artists. However, It exudes so much more life and community than your everyday consignment shop. Many vendors have contributed to the uprising of this hidden gem located right in the heart of downtown Mankato. In fact, vendors will volunteer in store to work the counter and help the store become greater than the sum of its parts by helping all of Good Day Sunshine’s vendors sell their products. The store began with 10-15 vendors as well as a great deal of garage and estate sale shopping by Mike and Sheila. They now have products from over one hundred different vendors in store and have items ranging anywhere from homemade jewelry and patchwork clothing (made by Sheila and Mike themselves) to adult Grateful Dead bear suits, big and tall festival gear, and many different herbs. There’s always new items in the store and it is always a different experience every time you go as they are constantly receiving different products. Mike and Sheila also do custom orders for stickers, buttons, and are soon to begin screen printing. Although the store may seem to be directed towards festi-goers, it draws in a very diverse clientele that include people from many walks of life. Their customers are typically crafters, gardeners, naturalistic healers, local musicians and fans, and especially festi-goers. As a compliment to their place in the local music scene, Good Day Sunshine not only attends festivals and sells local band t-shirts and albums, but they also help promote and sponsor shows locally. As Mike reiterated to me the importance of buying local he made an important connection behind the idea of contributing to local businesses. That connection was that when you buy local, you aren’t just buying into Good Day Sunshine or other local stores, you’re buying into the entire community and helping our area grow stronger together. Mike and Sheila also tour neighboring states to attend festivals and sell their products there as vendors. Future locations you can find them at include Revival Festival, Project Earth, and Shangri La. All located at Harmony Park in Geneva, MN. They will also be at Solstice Festival at Riverfront Park in Mankato, MN as well as BloomTown Festival in Waubun, MN and Grateful Friends Festival in Gays Mills, WI. Good Day Sunshine is all about the local arts and culture. It truly is a blessing to have them as a part of our rapidly expanding arts community. Wadjda Say? The next presentation in the OPL’s Independent and World Film Series is Wadjda, an award-winning film from Saudi Arabia. Wadjda is a wonderfully moving tale of an endearing 10-year-old girl making her voice heard in a patriarchal society that seeks to silence her. An irrepressible child living in a suburb of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, Wadjda is fun loving, entrepreneurial and always pushing the boundaries. After a fight with her friend Abdullah, a neighborhood boy she shouldn’t be playing with, Wadjda sees a beautiful green bicycle for sale. She wants it desperately so that she can beat Abdullah in a race. But Wadjda’s mother won’t allow it, fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtue. So Wadjda decides to try and raise the money herself but her plans are thwarted when she is caught running various schemes at school. Just as she is losing hope, she hears of a cash prize for a Koran recitation competition at her school. She devotes herself to the recitation of Quranic verses and her teachers begin to see this troublesome child as a model of piety. No matter what, Wadjda is determined to continue fighting for her dreams. As the first successful woman filmmaker in Saudi Arabia’s history,

CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour 2014 32 new sculptures to be installed May 17 The CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour will be welcoming thirty-two new sculptures on Saturday, May 17th into the City Centers of Mankato and North Mankato. The program will feature stunning works of art created by renowned artists from 12 different states in the U.S., 2 foreign countries and many pieces by Minnesota artists. “It never ceases to amaze me the amount of local talent in and around the Mankato area” states Noelle Lawton, Special Initiatives Coordinator for the City Center Partnership. “This year we have artists from Good Thunder, Hastings and Lakeville – it is important to us to be able to support and uncover homegrown sculptors”. New on the installation weekend agenda this year is a “Meet and Greet on the Street” on Saturday, May 17th from 3:00 – 4:00pm after installation. The public is welcome to come out and meet nearly half of the artists at their sculpture site around the City Center. This is a special opportunity to put a face to the art that the community enjoys year round and delve deeper into the inspiration behind the sculptures. CityArt will again be hosting a public Artists’ Reception at Number 4 American Bar and Kitchen from 4:00 – 6:00pm that same day. The reception is an event where the public, sponsors and artists come together to celebrate arts and culture in the Mankato City Center. An added feature to the program this year is the option of voting online from the CityArt website for your favorite People’s Choice sculpture. Police make second arrest in assault incident
Public Safety staff received numerous tips about the assault that occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 11 in the downtown Mankato entertainment district. Through information received, detectives were able to establish enough information to arrest Trevor Stenner Shelley, age 21, 44294 Hillside Court, Saint Peter, Minn. Mankato detectives, along with Le Sueur County Sheriff deputies and staff from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension arrested Shelley at 6:15 p.m. on Monday, May 12, at his residence. Shelley was taken to the Blue Earth County jail. Requested charges include first and third degree assault. The occupants of the white vehicle seen in surveillance video released to the public have come forward and been interviewed by investigators. Police are still looking for additional witnesses of the assault and for individuals with knowledge as to the whereabouts of involved parties throughout the hours preceding the incident. Hungry Twin Cities Travelers Visit Mankato Area
As the Star Tribune’s travel section pointed out with a special column from Jean Sramek, a Duluth-based journalist, the Greater Mankato area (Mankato, North Mankato and Saint Peter) is known to folks in the Twin Cities as the “college town”, and is where many send their young sons and daughters to attend school, or rather their sons and daughters choose to go to school there. Yes, Mankato, more specifically, Minnesota State University, Mankato (MNSU or MSU) has a reputation for being somewhat of a party campus. One year the campus made headlines after a riot ensued just after a homecoming football game and riot police ascended on the now demolished Gage towers. It is also where many local bars in the area held cup nights and the city felt compelled to pass a moratorium to prevent those types of sales at bars. But also, don’t forget that many successful entrepreneurs, business and community leaders, parents, teachers, activists and scientists have also came out of MNSU/MSU. Not just that, but the area is also home to Gustavus Adolphus College (Saint Peter), Rasmussen College, Martin Luther College (New Ulm), South Central College (North Mankato), Bethany Lutheran College (Mankato), Cosmetology Training Center (Mankato) and a University of Minnesota Extension. The area is also one the youngest and most vibrant and growing communities in the country, according to a recent poll. Zack Kolars A Local Comedy Rising Star
Kolars at Goonie’s Comedy Club, Rochester Mankato is known for having great live entertainment, especially music, but the comedy scene in Mankato is alive as well. Just ask Zack Kolars, the local host for Mankato Comedy, a local comedy group that spawned between Lawson Media and the Maverick Comedy Club at Minnesota State University. Kolars has been performing standup since his days as a college student at MSU. He was a member of the comedy club and maintains a great relationship with current and former members. For the past year, along with Rob Lawson, Kolars has organized Mankato Comedy nights at the Mankato Event Center, opening for regional comedians that have worked with some of the biggest stars in standup. Kolars is a great personality on stage and his routines keep audiences on their toes. His sharp wit and revolting sarcasm make his comedy a pleasure to watch and listen to. Kolars opened for Dwight York at Busters Bar on Madison Avenue in Mankato’s last show of the season until summer is over. Kolars began booking several shows locally and regionally, including performances at Goonie’s in Rochester and Acme Comedy Club in Minneapolis. Kolars is performing in a comedy contest at the Acme this month. His firiends and supporters in Mankato are rooting for him. Mankato Comedy will be taking booking requests for the summer.
