The state of Arizona permits signs to be placed in the memory of a loved one along the shoulders of the freeways and highways. Believe they can stay up for 2-10 years. This sign is on Highway 92 to Pirtleville. This was a rather unique idea of Jose’s children to remember him in this manner.

Sylvia Robles Vasquez, daughter of Jose Cordova Robles who lived to the ripe old age of 99, when I asked her for a dicho didn’t miss a beat when she said to me, “el que quiere, puede”. The translation being , “the one that wants, can”. Believe she must have heard that a time or two in her life. Dichos are sayings that have been passed down through generations and are part of the fabric of our culture and Spanish language. They bring truth and wisdom from the ages that can make you laugh or cry, maybe both depending on your situation. In very few words they get to the heart of the matter. I am sure that everyone has their favorite dicho that you can hear in your mother’s or father’s voices echoing even now in your mind.

El que no habla, Dios no lo oye. OR Who does not speak, God does not hear. Translation: The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Mas sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo. OR The devil knows more for being old than for being the devil.

Translation: Experience means more than a name. Dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres. Translation: Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are. El que la hace, a paga. Quien mal anda mal acaba. OR A life lived badly will end badly. Translation: Shape up and do right. What goes around comes around.

Hay mas tiempo que vida. OR There is more time than life. Translation: Don't waste your life

El hijo de la gata, ratones mata. OR The son of the cat kills mice. Translation: Like father, like son.

Entrada de caballo, salida de burro. OR Enter on horseback, leave on a donkey. Translation: Don't start something you can't finish. 12

Tribute~ 1929-2010

The first time I met Ramon was in March of 2008 in Tucson, AZ when he attended a family gathering honoring Tia Rosa who was celebrating her 90th birthday. He had come to honor her, also. He was the only one from his Robles family line, the Arturo Laborin Robles line as I was the only one from the Miguel Luna Robles line. Ramon was quite friendly, soft spoken, with a gentle spirit, and I recall that his eyes seemed to give off a bit of a twinkle when he spoke. As we visited I asked Ramon what he did for a living, though I suspected that he might be retired as he appeared to be in his 70’s. He said that he was a pharmacist and had worked for many years at El Rio Health Center. We didn’t visit very long because he was headed to work at El Rio...on a Saturday. He left quite an impression upon me considering we didn’t visit for long and I knew that I wanted to visit with him some more. Ramon was born and raised in Pirtleville, Arizona, the son of Arturo & Hortensia Rivera Robles. He was one of ten children who grew up in a close knit family. After graduating from Douglas High School he joined the U.S. Air Force. When he completed his service time he pursued his studies at

the University of Arizona, graduating from the Pharmacy Program. Ramon accepted employment with El Rio Community Health Center after having worked at another pharmacy for 10 years. As it turns out, Ramon was the “founding pharmacist” for El Rio. He was the Chief Pharmacist for almost 40 years. Ramon loved his work as much as any many can love a profession. More than that, Ramon was a servant of his profession considering it a calling and not just a job. His work brought his great joy and satisfaction and he was tireless in his effort to bring the highest standards of excellence his profession ad to offer to the patients El Rio served. Respected by his colleagues and the health care community, in 2008 Ramon received an Award of Appreciation from the Association of Community Health Centers.

Diagnosed with cancer in 2009, Ramon continued to supervise the pharmacy a few hours every day at the clinic while he was taking chemo therapy. El Rio’s Board of Directors and Executive Officers recognizing Ramon’s unfailing resolve to the mission of the clinic honored him in January 2010 at a ceremony dedicating the pharmacy by renaming it in his name. By his side was his wife of many years Felicia, son Jonathan and grandson Alejandro, in addition to his brother Leo, sister Evelina and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who love Ramon. Ramon has passed on, taken from this world to the next by cancer. But even cancer cannot take his spirit of humility, his gentleness, the twinkle I saw in his eye the day I met him from my memory. I think about what the Bible says about rendering honor to those to whom honor is due. Such a man was Ramon. I penned the above words about Ramon the day that he died. Later, Harvey Provencio sent me the article above. It’s a beautifully written article capturing the man that I had met that day in March of 2008 and confirming to me that my initial impression of him was correct and then some. The photo at the top is one that I took of him at El Rio. It’s how I will remember Ramon. Ramon at the place that he loved, serving the people that he loved, practicing a profession that allowed him to serve those that he loved. Q.E.P.D. Ramon. 13

Why Tin Town was called Tin Town Once a small community not too far from the border of Mexico and occupied mostly by Mexicans who were working in the mines and smelters , Tin Town was thriving with life through the 1950’s. They had their own butcher, small grocery store, & a church . The town got it’s name from the homes which were clad and roofed in tin. Today Tin Town is only a shell of it’s former self as can be seen from the photo., but it’s still survives. Inset shows Tintown in 1912 (photo courtesy of Bisibee Mining Museum).

Guaymas is a beautiful port city on the Bay of California. Known as a major shrimp producing city, but with its stock greatly depleted, Guaymas is gearing up for tourism in the hopes of beefing up it’s economy. Guaymas holds a carnival dating back to 1888 that is known as one of the liveliest in Mexico. Gilberto settled in Guaymas and raised his children there. I need to visit Guaymas.

reunion until I lived in the South (AR, AL, TN, MO) and reunions were de riguer. My friends in the South invited me to their annual family reunions which I enjoyed very much. But one year after attending a friend’s reunion I thought out loud to my husband Larry, “Why doesn’t my family have reunions? Who is my family and where are they?” Needless to say, Larry had no answer for me. But these questions burned inside me and my passion for genealogy research was born. And because of that research I found my reunion. The Gertrudis line (the Provencios, the Munoz, the Buttner families) hold a heck of a reunion every year and have done so for over 30 years. The photos on this page are reunion photos—family I would not have met except at the reunions. If you are reading this, please consider attending one of the reunions.

• I am currently working on a cruise ship in the Mexican Riviera as a lead production singer. Singing is my life and I could not imagine doing anything else. I have been a performer ever since I was a child, so that is a huge part of who I am. Other being passionate about entertaining, I really enjoy having fun in life. There are so many reasons to be happy and I try to stop and be thankful for them all. I love being around people and I especially love being around animals. If I wasn't a singer, I would love to be a zoologist.

Post script: Juoy’s off the boat and married Andrew Murdock in Tucson, AZ in January 2010. Congratulations Juoy & Andrew! 28

Part of our history, Douglas is a gateway city to America where the Robles family has lived, and still live, for over 120 years.

Douglas stands on the U.S.-Mexico border across from Agua Prieta Sonora, Mexico. Elevation: 4,006 ft Population 1910: 9,916 Population 2008 : 20,316 Lat/Long Coordinates: 31.344911° N 109354136 °W

Average rainfall: Average snowfall:

13.76" 0.2

Circa 1920 pamphlet touting the wonderful Arizona climate emphasizing the abundance of sunshine and the lack of rain as an enticement for people to move to Douglas. I’d be willing to wager that it failed to mention that the temperature in the summer can get to 100 degrees in the shade. But I would move to DouglasE..home of the Bulldogs, a city with wonderfully old fashioned wide streets, situated next to an international border that is still safe to walk across. Douglas has a slow paced small town atmosphere. And to me, 100 degree weather is a plus. What’s not to like?

Both Henry and Arthur Smith served in the Navy during WWII. The picture above is Henry’s graduating class. He was injured and did not see overseas action. He was discharged out of San Francisco and returned home to Arizona. His brother Arthur served on the USS Nevada.

Henry & Arthur Smith

When I was going through the mountain of photos that Tibo loaned me, I came across one of two little boys with a note on the back of the photo that said they were “Smith” Smith” cousins. Even in a black and white photo I could tell they were seriously guero. Pale as ghosts they were and very blonde, it was not clear to me to whom they were related. And “Smith”? Hadn’t come across that particular surname in the Robles family tree before. A little hunting and the Smith family turned up in the 1930 Census. Their mother was Maria Concepcion (Concha) Robles Bustamante, daughter of Maria de la Luz Robles. Somewhere along the line Concha met John Alex Smith, (whose name had been changed from the German ‘Schmidt’ when he entered the United States when he was a small boy). She married this German miner and they had two sons-Henry and Arthur. Henry is still alive as of 2010 and living in Bisbee, Arizona. He and his brother lived in Bisbee their entire lives, except when they served in the Navy in WWII. Henry told me that they spoke Spanish at home, but they were discouraged from using it at school. Henry said they were never treated (discriminated) as Mexicans at school because they favored, looked like the gringo children. He recalls his mother’s Tia Gertrudis visiting them at their home, but they did not visit with much of the rest of the Robles family. Henry only recalls his mother going to Mexico to visit her family twice in his life and she didn’t take the children. Arthur never did marry according to Henry. Henry did marry and has two daughters, Sharon and Ginger who live in Lemon Grove, California. However, this being the case, sadly, the Smith name will cease in the Robles line as a surname when Henry passes away.

Usually we want to get an “A” for anything we do in life, but Damon Lovato gets a “D”. A “D” that stands for sheer dedication and determination. Read the article to see how he dealt with a seizure and stroke caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy while he was coaching the Amphi girls team. The girls went on to win the game, but Damon Lovato was already a winner that day for more reasons than one. Have we earned our “D” lately?

This border crossing between Mexico and the United States was the first research that established the relationship of Catalina Robles with the Francisco/Rita family line.

Rita Luna is noted as her grandmother that she was going to visit in Bisbee.. I also have border crossings for her other siblings Augusta & Leopolda and a baptism record for her sister Benedicta.

A rare photo of Catarina Robles on the left. The woman on the right is Angelita Robles who may be another sister. Notice that she does have a long, thin face just like she is described on her border crossing.

Research results in discovery of facts. And it is a fact that in March of 2010 I located a baptismal record for another daughter of Francisco & Rita!. Her name is Gregoria. Up to this point I have not heard her mentioned by anyone in the family. Now, I need to locate the research that will tell us if she grew to adulthood and married or if, perhaps, she died before that event in her life., etc..

In the parish of Ures, on the 18th of April 1880, I, the priest in charge, baptized an only female child born three days before, of which I named Gregoria Basiliza Perfecta, Perfecta legitimate daughter of Francisco Robles and Rita Luna. Pete has buried many of the Robles family. Literally. Though he recently retired in 2008, he worked for the City of Douglas overseeing Calvary Cemetery for 30 years. He knew without consulting a plat map of the cemetery or records exactly where family was buried when I arrived looking to research gravesites in July of 2008. And believe me there are thousands of people buried there. Without Pete, I would have wandered around for awhile under the searing sun. It made me feel good to know that Pete has been there all these years keeping a watchful eye on so many of the family. And Rufus, too.

o·bit·u·ar·y n. pl. o·bit·u·ar·ies Med. Lat.-obituarius (report) of death. A published notice of death, sometimes with a brief biography of the deceased. That’s the Webster Dictionary definition of “obituary”. However, when one is doing genealogy research and haven’t photos or a personal contact for a person you are researching, an obituary may provide everything in the world you can glean about a relative. Rudimentary facts such as names of parents, siblings, spouse, and children, dates of birth and death and perhaps where they lived or went to church. BUT,if one is really fortunate the obit gives you a glimpse into the character and makeup of an individual. Such as the one to the left for Domitila Robles Yanez. Her nickname “Tillie” and those of her children individualize them to us. We read that she was an actively involved woman investing her time in the development of her beloved hometown of Douglas . She had a servant’s heart and was passionate about serving in in the Catholic Church for 40 years! “Smiling face”, “caring hands”, “touched the lives of many” leaves those of us who never met Domitila with the impression of a woman who was much loved for the love she showed others. Not a bad impression, if I do say so myself.

City seal of Ures, Sonora, Mexico that shows San Miguel Archangel Iglesia. Our ancestors from Francisco & Rita Luna Robles were all baptized in this very church in the 1800’s. Thankfully the records of their baptisms, confirmations, marriages and deaths have been microfilmed and now digitized by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints– more commonly known as the Mormans. They have done a remarkable job preserving these important historical documents. There are thousands and thousands of documents. I can’t explain to you the gratifying feeling that comes over me when after 4, 5, 6 hours of steadily searching documents I’ll come across something that provides documentation for one of our ancestors. Priceless.

The hoop of a dream catcher symbolizes strength and unity. This beautiful & large dream catcher was made by Alex Rico and hangs in his Aunt Martha’s home in Tucson.

As another artist in the family, Alex shares with us the wonderful lore of the dream catcher legend. Our positive dreams glide down it’s feathers to the sleeping person below, while our negative dreams become confused and entangled in the web of the dream catcher and dissipate in the first light of dawn like the dew.

Sweet dreams everyone! 68

Diabetes Consider this my public service announcement based on what I have found out from my research. I’d be remiss and irresponsible not to mention that diabetes runs rampant through this family. Some of the lines more than others. But it touches all of us when any of our loved ones have it, yours truly included. And it’s effects are devastating on everything from our eyes to heart to our kidneys, not to mention our circulatory system. When you go to the doctor, even if you don’t have someone with it in your immediate family let them know that we collectively have a long history of this ravishing disease. Better to be safe than sorry. Death certificates don’t lie and I have seen a couple of hundred that have given the cause of death as “diabetes” or complications thereof. And I’ve spoken to another hundred or so who have it now in our extended family.

From the Greek word diakonos, deacon translates to “servant”, “waiting man”, “minister” or “messenger”. Deacons are part of the ordained clergy in the Catholic Church. They can baptize, witness marriages, bring the viaticum to the dying and preside at funerals. Alicia was most proud that he baptized some of their great-grandchildren.

We have artists of all sorts in this family. Robert Figueroa has chosen wood as his medium. These exquisite chopsticks are a sample of his artistry...the picture does not do them or his artistry justice. His mother Hortensia has a collection of beautiful cooking spoons, (cocinar las cucharas) and rolling pins that he carved for her over the years that are both useful and gorgeous. The angel he made for me went along on my great roadtrip in 2009 from AR to AZ and back. Kept me safe.

Relatively Speaking ~ “My mother wasn’t mother to us, but she was a mother figure to a lot of family members” is one point made in Edward Tarango’s 4 page winning essay about his beloved mother Loretta. In 2007 KIKO 1430 radio station in Globe honored Loretta as Mother of the Year. Entitled, Mother’s Day for a True Mom , Edward started out noting her attributes of “Nice, Honest, Loving, True” followed by these points: • Never gave up on anybody, especially her children. • Would help anybody who asked for help. • Raised a lot of children; not just her own. Edward recognized & valued his wonderful mother before the world by writing his essay. What greater love hath a son?

Ernie’s Capirotada. Capirotada I think it ‘s really my grandmother’s recipe, but he is the only one who can make it, “like she did”. 2 Loaves of French bread cut into small pieces and toasted. 1/2# long horn cheese grated 2 boxes of seedless raisins 3 bunches of chopped green onions 2 boxes of dark brown suger mixed with water 2 cans of tomatoes peeled and crushed Cinnamon Combine (blend) above ingredients in a small roaster pan; top with brown sugar/water mix. Reserve some of the brown sugar mixture to be able to add to the ingredients to keep it from drying out. Add cinnamon to taste.

Agree or disagree with it’s origin, the history of capirotada goes back hundreds of years when Mexicans made this recipe and ate it during the Lenten season as a remembrance of Christ’s suffering on Good Friday. Even the ingredients are symbolic according to Wikipedia. The bread represents the body of Christ, the brown sugar syrup his blood, the raisins represented the nails and the melted cheese was reminiscent of His Holy Shroud. Recipes for capirotada from the Spanish Inquisition (1400-1500’s) are still retained in the Catholic archives today. Think I am safe in saying that none of this symbolism was occurring to my grandmother Carlota when she made capirotada.

Collections are interesting. Diversified, too. I’ve collected rocking horses for 30 years, Concha’s husband collected beautiful kachina dolls and Raul, Ketta’s husband, collects military helmets from around the world. He has a special, separate room to house his very extensive collection. The challenge with collections is who cares as much about them as we do to inherit them? What happens to them when we die? Well, who cares? Let the living do with them what they will once we’re gone. We’ll just enjoy them TODAY.

GLOBE, AZ Throughout this book you may have noticed that I have highlighted some of the cities that have been significant in Robles history as they traveled and settled in Arizona. Guess this is the Globe page. Miguel Luna Robles went the farthest north in Arizona of his siblings settling in Globe around 1914. I don’t know why he went to Globe. It was a mining town, but so were a 1/2 dozen other cities in Arizona at the time. Maybe he just stopped there with his brood of youngsters...4 still dependant upon him in 1914, one just a toddler of 3 without a mother. ,….because he liked what he saw. My mother claims her grandfather was headed to California but stopped in Globe because the horses were worn out and the wheels had fallen off of the wagon. But stay he did in this isolated mining town of many canyons located in the Pinal mountains. With canyons come lots of hills, some of them very steep. I can remember as a kid climbing them with my cousins and with my grandmother Carlotta when we walked way down the hill to the Safeway grocery store or to the post office. Miguel’s grandchildren who are mostly in their 80’s now, recall their grandfather Miguel as tall, blue eyed, a quiet man, with a moustache he waxed with butter, a carpenter who built the homes they lived in with a ranchito on the edge of town where he grew a lot of their food.

At an elevation of 3,510’ summers are hot, winters are moderately cold. Originally incorporated as Globe City, it is known today as Globe named by legend for an extremely large discovery of silver in 1876 in the shape of a globe. Mining is the main industry and Globe boasts one of the few operating copper smelters in the United States today. Population in 1910 was 7,044; in 2008 it was 8,032. Time has kinda stood still there for almost 100 years.

Widowed the first time in 1892 with the death of his first wife Francisca Olivas, and then again sometime in 1914 with the death of Margarita Lopez the mother of all of his children, he married a third time a few years before his death in Globe in 1939. And in Globe he remains buried in the Mexican section of the old Globe Cemetery off of Euclid street.

It wouldn’t have occurred to me, but it seems that whenever I meet someone and mention it to others in our extended family they ask right off, “ do they have light eyes, blue eyes?’ Or, “did she have large hands?” Now I check for myself. And yes, large hands do run in the Robles women and so do blue/green eyes. Meet Amanda Robles who was nice enough to allow me to photograph her large, beautiful hands.

Lopez ROBLES 1914-

Lopez ROBLES 1906-1913

Sometimes in genealogy we hit the proverbial ‘brick wall’. Meaning we have encountered information that we can not get through, or over, or under. They are mysteries waiting to be solved. There are remedies such as other avenues of research or new resources that may become available, but while they are in brick wall status it is really annoying. Such is the case with Geherma Lopez Robles. someone that nobody seems to know exists. I always understood from my mother and aunts and uncles that Maria Anita born in 1910 was the last child of Miguel & Margarita Lopez Robles. So imagine my surprise when I found the birth certificate for Geherma born a full four years later in 1914...a date beyond when Margarita had supposedly died. Well obviously she was alive and gave birth to Geherma . It is possible that Margarita died in childbirth with her, but there are no death certificates for either of them. . Margarita’s daughters Carlotta and Adela knew that their mother was buried under an unidentified pile of rocks in the cemetery high atop a hill in Solomon(ville). But what happened to Geherma...died, adopted out.?? I’ll have to knock down that brick wall to find the answer.

Weddings, Veterans, Headstones, Photos It’s hard for me to believe that three years of genealogy research have gone by so quickly. Time is always in the back of my mind as a researching genealogist. Especially one starting so late in the game ….at least it feels late since I started all this past the half century mark. There’s an urgency to meet and see everyone that might be related, have the least bit of information, that might provide stories or photos, to return that phone call or answer that email following up a lead as soon as possible . And there never seems to be enough time. But I wouldn’t trade my passion for piecing together our family, the Robles genealogy for anything. It’s my belief that my ancestors, your ancestors ...Francisco, Miguel, Gertrudis, Plutarco, Eulogia, Luz, Rafael, Perfecta, and Andres… have gathered their collective spiritual energy and have drawn me to this task. No way to prove this, I just feel it. And that is sufficient to continue the task. One day I will write a “real” book of our family history….one day when I have time. Until then , this flip-book shall have to suffice. It’s the result of my attending my first family reunion in Dragoon, AZ a couple of years ago with the Provencio-Munoz_Martinez bunch and me thinking that they wouldn’t have the slightest clue who I was or how I fit into their family. So, desperate, I came up with this format the evening before I was to leave and literally stopped at Kinko’s to get it printed on the way to catch my plane from Little Rock to Tucson. The first edition was 25 pages with a few photos; this is the fifth edition , 100 pages, that includes info on all our known lines to date (though, very limited on some), lots more photos, and a few short bios . The following pages don’t include all weddings, all veterans or headstones and certainly not all the photos I have gathered, but it gives you an idea of the overall makeup of nuestra familia. If you want to see everything you need to visit our website: www. Roblesfamily1.com, Roblesfamily1.com Enjoy the website because it takes time, too. Susan Valerio Long, January 2010

Photos Tell Our Stories & Put the Pieces Together for Us Ruben Robles shown standing by his grandfather Francisco’s 1940ish car in Douglas, AZ about 45 years ago. This car still exists. It’s sitting in Francisco’s deceased son Gregorio’s backyard in Phoenix, Arizona. His granddaughter Vivian, (Ruben’s sister-Gregorio’s daughter) hopes to restore it and have it up and running again.

The old photo on the left helped identify for Vivian whose vehicle was in her father’s backyard.

Thank you to everyone who has shared their photos so generously to advance our family research—Vivian, Aunt Angie, Tia Maggie, Tia Carmen, Senora Juana, Harvey, Lupe, Gilberto & Tencha, Arlene, Susan, Tibo, Leo, Rosa, David, Leo & Dolores, Anna, Maggie, Sylvia, Juoy, Cuca, Alicia, Irene & Brandi to name just a few.

Sorry About That! No book is entirely perfect For errors will creep in; Sometimes wrong information is sent By someone’s next of kin. And even printers make mistakes

Only a Genealogist regards a step backwards as progress

For which they tear their hair; Sometimes two people disagree On who or when or where. It might have been the person Who wrote the history;

Genealogy: Where you confuse the dead and irritate the living

It might have been the typist, Or blame the Author, me. So, if you’re dead before you’re born Or married when you’re three Or I’ve omitted anyone Who sent themselves to me;

A family tree can wither if nobody tends its roots

Or your last name is not your own, Your pictures not too good, I ask you-please forgive me; I’ve done the best I could. Source: Howard County Genealogy Society, August 1995
