MANIFESTO La prima edizione è stata un’appassionata indagine sul rapporto tra uomo e macchina; nella seconda il confronto/scontro delle possibilità offerte oggi dai software è stato analizzato nella sua accezione più antropocentrica e nella terza, roBOt festival è arrivato all'approdo definitivo: l'ibridazione fra uomo e macchina. Ora che il cerchio è chiuso, l’evoluzione è compiuta, non resta che capire dove andrà questo “uomo nuovo” dell’era tecnologica, quali sono gli scenari possibili di questa nuova società apolide e digitalizzata, quali rivoluzioni e quali cambiamenti ci attendono. Ciò che possiamo dare per certo è che si tratterà di un cambiamento inesorabile e dalle conseguenze imprevedibili, perché nasce dal basso, nella sua accezione più nobile, e ha tutta l’intenzione di plasmare un nuovo modello di società. Un movimento che partirà dalla strada, quella dell’informazione, e diventerà placenta di una nuova conoscenza globale. Una rivoluzione.

Do It Yourself : Revolution now! Un nuovo scenario, somma di individui biotecnologici e interconnessi, in cui l’innovazione è appannaggio di tutti, si slega dal controllo del singolo e tramite un’interfaccia comune diventa la lavagna dove l’umanità ridisegna la propria esistenza. Se la nostra generazione comprende solamente le potenzialità di questo cambiamento, per i “Digital natives”, rappresenta la logica conseguenza. Rivoluzione, una parola che se nelle arti significa la rottura con il tradizionale modello di produzione e distribuzione legato al profitto, in altri contesti può avere risvolti sociali ancora più importanti. La costruzione di un’opera non è più solo il prodotto della creatività di un singolo individuo, ma la somma di azioni congiunte. Se il cervello è un organo sociale e risponde agli stimoli ambientali, allora non si tratta solo di ibridazione all’interno del soggetti, bensì di ibridazione fra soggetti diversi. Questa rivoluzione conduce alla formazione di un nuovo trend artistico e sociale globale. roBOt04 vuole immaginare nuovi mondi possibili, a struttura orizzontale, dove le disuguaglianze della società verranno abbattute dalla familiarità acquisita con la “realtà aumentata”: dimensioni in cui la vita di ogni singolo individuo diventi parte di un’esperienza collettiva. Se Brian Eno lancia un’applicazione per iPhone con cui gli utenti di tutto il mondo sono in grado di comporre musica sullo schermo, disegnando motivi con le dita, allora possiamo solo intuire la rivoluzione che è in atto! L’artista grazie ai nuovi media allarga i suoi orizzonti, rinuncia alla proprietà intellettuale, per dare il là ad un processo creativo e collettivo immenso. Un Do It Yourself globale, in cui ognuno possa costruire conoscenza e possa metterla a disposizione della comunità; ma in un mondo di artefici, dove finisce il copyright e dove inizia il sapere collettivo? E dove porterà questa rivoluzione? Come vivrà “l’homo habilis digitale ” in questo cyber soviet fantascentifico? Sarà costruita una nuova “Metropolis” in cui le macchine conserveranno il controllo dell’uomo sull’uomo, del suo corpo e del suo pensiero? O sarà invece l’inizio di nuova età aurea,

in cui la tecnologia sarà sinonimo di democrazia con cui abbattere i bisogni dell’individuo? Quali nuove invenzioni segneranno l’esito della storia? Difficile saperlo, perché a volte gli stessi artefici del cambiamento non si rendono conto del valore destrutturante delle loro azioni. Anzi accade spesso, ed il web ce l’ha dimostrato, che sia l’utilizzatore finale di un’opera, e non il suo creatore, a concepirne un uso utile per la comunità. Sono ancora una volta l’arte e la cultura lo strumento in grado di prevedere gli sviluppi futuri di questo “risorgimento”, la torre panottica da cui osservare il cambiamento, un processo creativo che con il suo sguardo profetico può sintetizzare i prismi della rivoluzione e immaginare scenari futuribili. Questa è la rivoluzione per roBOt04: il processo tecnologico che cambia l’individuo e l’individuo che cambia la società. Questa la sintesi di un percorso, iniziato 4 anni fa.

Now that it has come to a full circle, the evolution complete, it’s only left for us to understand where this ‘new man’ of the technology era will go, what the possible scenarios of this new stateless and digitalized society are, what the revolutions and the changes awaiting us will be. What we can be sure of is that there will be an inescapable change and unforeseeable consequences, because it’ll be born from the people, in its most noble sense, and will have the potential to mould a new model of society. A movement that starts from the road, the road of information, and will become the afterbirth of a new global awareness. A revolution.

Do It Yourself : Revolution now! A new scenario, a sum of biotechnological and interconnected people, where innovation is for everyone, that detaches from the control of the single person and, with a common interface, becomes the board where humanity draws its own existence. If our generation is able to grasp if only just the potential of this change, for the digital natives, it will portray its logic consequence. Revolution, a word which in the world of art means breaking with the traditional model of production and distribution connected with profit, in other contexts there could be even more important social implications. Producing an opera is no longer just a product of a single individual, but the sum of joint actions, the construction of an opera using more than one pair of hands. If the brain

is a social organ and responds to environmental stimulus then it’s not only about Hybridization between different subjects. This revolution will guide us to the formation of new artistic trends and societies worldwide. roBOt04 wants to imagine new possible worlds, a horizontal structure, where inequalities of our society will exist no more : dimensions in which life of every single person will become part of a collective experience. If Brian Eno can launch an application for the iphone so that its users globally are able to compose music on the screen by drawing melodies using their fingers, then we can just imagine the revolution that’s already under way! Thanks to new media, an artist’s horizon is wider, abandoning the intellectual and giving way to a more creative and massive collective process. A world wide DIY, where everyone can gain knowledge and put themselves and their work ‘out there’ in the community; but in a world of creators and artificers, where does the copyright finish and the shared knowledge start? And where will this revolution lead to? How will the “digital homo habili” live in this sci-fi cyber soviet? Will a new “Metropolis” be built in which technology, falsely liberated from a sole owner, conserving the power of man over man, of its body and thought? Or will a new golden rule be created, meaning that the rules the way we know them now won’t exist anymore? Which new inventions will mark this story? It’s difficult to know, considering the fact that the creators of change aren’t aware themselves of how destructive their actions can or will be. In fact, whether or not an opera is considered useful to the community often depends on where it ends up and not on its creator, as the web has demonstrated on many an occasion. Once again art and culture are instruments capable of foreseeing future developments in this ‘resurgence’, a panoptical tower from where one can observe the change, the creative process, using its prophetic gaze to synthesize prisms of the revolution and imagine future scenarios. This is the revolution, the inspiration for roBOt04: the technological process that changes the individual and the individual that changes society. This is the synthesis of a journey that began 4 years ago.

Quali leggi costituiranno la fisica delle dimensioni future? Come si definiranno gli abitanti che le costituiranno? E quali consuetudini si consolideranno per perpetrarne la sopravvivenza nei secoli a venire? roBOt anche stavolta coinvolge l’arte per intravedere fotogrammi della società del futuro, analizzando nuovi linguaggi concreti e verosimili pur nella loro visionarietà precognitiva: come le correnti architettoniche Radicali e l’estetica dello Space Age fecero negli anni Settanta, gli anni Dieci di questo millennio superano gli sconvolgimenti anarchici della Terza avanguardia, per gettare nuovi ponti al di là del presente ed immaginare una nuova quotidianità tecnologica, pervasa da una dimensione sociale del vivere. Una dimensione rappresentata da un’arte dal piglio futurista e dallo spirito “positivista”, in cui l’azione torni ad essere rivoluzione e il messaggio sia di rottura. Ancora una volta: il medium sarà il vero messaggio.

In a world of creators, where does intellectual ownership finish and the collective knowledge begin? And where will this revolution lead us? How will the digital homo habilis live in this Sci-Fi cyber soviet? Will a new “Metropolis” be created in which the machines will conserve the control of man over man, of his body and mind, or will a new-age golden rule be created, meaning that the rules the way we know them today will no longer exist? Which new inventions will make a mark in history? roBOt asks it’s participants to design new possible worlds, empowered realities providing collective opportunities in which to imagine, live and build a possible tomorrow, prophesying an “Invisible City”. Which rules will govern the physics of the future? How will the inhabitants who build them be defined? And which customs will be consolidated in order to perpetuate survival for centuries to come? Again this time round, roBOt is involving art to foresee frames of future societies, analyzing new concrete and likely languages also in their precognitive visionaries: : like the Radical architectonical schools and the Space Age aesthetics did for the Sixties, the year 10s of the Third Millennium cross the anarchic upheavals of the Third avant-garde, to build new bridges beyond the present day and to imagine a new technological routine, penetrated by a social dimension of living. A dimension represented by a futuristic art, animated by a positive spirit, in which the action will come back to be revolutionary and the message will be the breaking point. Realizzare un festival non significa solamente creare un contenitore di proposte, ma anche immaginare una manifestazione che un sia centro di smistamento culturale, un’opportunità per giovani artisti emergenti e di ogni nazionalità per diffondere le proprie idee in contesti nuovi. Il festival diventa un punto di riferimento e un momento di incontro per tutti i creativi. L’arte e la musica non hanno dimora, sono universali, per questo rassegne che fanno dell’indagine sull’arte e la musica la loro ragion de vivrè non possono quindi esimersi dal fare networking con l’estero. Spinti da questa affinità di prospettive e dal medesimo modo di agire “global thinking” nasce la voglia, anzi, la necessità reciproca di aprirsi nei confronti di realtà provenienti da contesti territoriali diversi ma che lavorano per realizzare gli stessi obiettivi. roBOt ha perciò costruito una rete di relazioni con due dei festival più interessanti del panorama internazionale: F.A.D., festival di arte digitale di Belo Horizonte, e Freemote, il festival di Utrecht curato da Born Digital. Procedendo per gradi sono state gettate le basi per un progetto di collaborazione pluriennale, ampliando anno dopo anno il coinvolgimento delle due rassegne. Le collaborazioni si sviluppano ad oggi in uno scambio artistico: roBOt 04 ospiterà artisti brasiliani e olandesi che presenteranno le loro opere durante il festival bolognese. Realizing a festival doesn’t only mean creating a receptacle for suggestions, offers and proposals, but also to envisage an event that is both the centre of a cultural melting-pot, and an opportunity for young budding artists of every nationality to diffuse their ideas in new contexts and new challenges. The festival becomes a point of reference and an abode for all forms of creativity. Art and music don’t have a resting place, they are universal, and resign that they investigate into art and music their reason to be, meaning therefore they can’t be exempt from networking. Pushed by this prospective and “global thinking” affinity gives birth to the will, or rather the mutual necessity, to be open in respect to the reality that functions on various territorial contexts and also to work together towards the same objectives. roBOt has built a network of connections with the most interesting festivals on an international panorama: F.A.D., Digital Art festival in Belo Horizonte, and Freemote, the festival in Utrecht curated by Born Digital. In stages, the bases of a project with long-term collaborations have been put together, establishing year after year involvement from the two festivals. The collaborations have created an artistic exchange. roBOt04 will host Brazilian and Dutch artists that will present their pieces of work during the Bolognese festival.
