Bellefonte was the home of seven governors and is the present home of the American Philatelic Society and its museum. It was founded more than 200 years ago, and the origin of its name is steeped in legend and controversial to this day.

Bellefonte and the Intervalley area is a region rich in culture and history, with something wonderful for every age and interest – from Pure Imagination Toy Shop to world class fly-fishing and outdoor sports and on to our Victorian architecture, museums, special events, historical bed and breakfasts, and unique dining and shopping establishments. Four Seasons of Fun

No matter the time of year, it’s a good time to visit the Bellefonte Intervalley Area Make your visit to the Bellefonte Intervalley Area extra special by enjoying one of our many events and activities while you’re here.

Sporting events, fairs and festivals, concerts, and more — there’s always something fun happening here!

The Easter Egg Hunt kicks of the spring season in Bellefonte.

Springtime kicks off with the Bellefonte Community Easter Egg Hunt, held before Easter in beautiful Talleyrand Park. Children search for 10,000 eggs hidden on the lawn and amid thousands of daffodils that bloom throughout the park (and around town).

Families enjoy games, refreshments, and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

Also popular in April is Healthy Kids Day at the Bellefonte YMCA. Farmers’ markets open in front of the Centre County Courthouse and in the Gamble Mill parking lot, offering the opportunity to buy farm-fresh local vegetables,

fruits, and homemade treats. Meanwhile, the Bellefonte Garden Tour showcases diverse gardens at homes in this historic town.

The first Saturday after April 11 marks the opening of Pennsylvania’s trout season, and the Intervalley Area’s mountain-fed sparkling streams are among the best in the world.

Bellefonte residents and visitors celebrate the town’s clear waters on the third weekend in May with the Big Spring Festival, held in Talleyrand Park near the “Big Spring” that provides the town’s water supply. Among the day’s highlights are concerts, kayaking, craft booths, children’s activities, and the stocking of Spring Creek with trout.

Those who love motorboats, sailboats, and jet skis enjoy warmer weather by heading to Bald Eagle State Park’s 1,730-acre Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir, which also offers a sandy swimming beach and picnic area.

As summer approaches, the Bellefonte Children’s Fair features games, face painting, pony rides, entertainment, and other activities.

On Father’s Day weekend, another longtime tradition hits the streets of the county seat as the Bellefonte Cruise draws car-lovers and fun-lovers downtown. Stock cars, antique cars, street rods, and cruising and touring motorcycles — they’re all here, along with a sock hop, motorcycle poker run, 5K race, and much more.

During the summer, music-lovers gather at Talleyrand Park on Sundays for Summer Sounds from the Gazebo. Residents and visitors set up lawn chairs and picnic baskets to enjoy free concerts ranging from Dixieland to classic rock. In July, national, regional, and local artists converge on Bellefonte and State College for JazzPa, one of the premier jazz events west of the Hudson River. The main stage is in Talleyrand Park, and many performances are free of charge.

August brings the visual arts to town for the Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair. More than 100 juried artists and crafters display their works in the park, along with family entertainment, tasty food, and children’s activities. On the other side of Nittany Mountain, the Centre County Grange Encampment & Fair takes

over the region the last week of the month. In addition to carnival rides, farm animals, and favorite foods, the 140-year-old Grange Fair is renowned for its sprawling tent encampment.

As summer turns to fall, and the colors of red, yellow, and orange blaze across the mountain and valley, the annual Fall Festival and Community Days take advantage of crisp, pleasant weather to offer children’s games, ghost stories, music, food, and more

Fall-foliage train rides are available via the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society.

One of the region’s signature events takes place every December — Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. Immerse yourself in Charles Dickens’s “Christmas Past” with a historic-homes tour, horse-drawn buggy rides, strolling costumed carolers, Victorian tea party, arts and crafts show, gingerbread-house contest, rides on the Santa Express historic train, and so much more.

Meanwhile, Bald Eagle State Park offers brave-hearted individuals the chance to take The Plunge, running into frigid lake waters to raise funds for the YMCA. On the warmer side, during the winter, concerts take place on selected Sunday afternoons in a historic setting at the Centre County Library.

Explore two centuries of history in Victorian Bellefonte

Historic architecture can be found all around Bellefonte.

Victorian Bellefonte is a Central Pennsylvania treasure, with historic architecture on tree-lined streets, and residents who strive to preserve more than 200 years of heritage. Whether you’re here for a special event, a shopping trip, or another type of visit, you’ll be surrounded by significant buildings that give you a glimpse into days gone by.

In 1785, William Lamb bought 750 acres here and built the area’s first permanent home, as well as a mill and millrace along Spring Creek. Today, this area is still known as Lamb’s Crossing, and the historic gristmill is home to the Gamble Mill Restaurant and Microbrewery.

Within a decade of Lamb’s arrival, thanks to the waters of Spring Creek and the “Big Spring,” as well as the abundance of high-

grade iron ore, the area became a targeted place to settle. In 1795, the first street plan for Bellefonte was laid out, and in 1800 Centre County was formed. Officials authorized the first county courthouse, in Bellefonte, in 1805 — a simple stone building. An Ionic-columned porch was added in 1835. In 1854, all but the porch was torn down and the current courthouse was built, looking between those columns across the market diamond down toward Spring Creek.

As the area became more prosperous, Bellefonte became a Pennsylvania focal point for wealth and political clout. Prosperous local families built fine residences such as the John Blair Linn House, constructed in 1810 of local limestone and today housing the Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County.

At North Allegheny and Lamb streets, the Hastings Mansion was fashioned after the old state capitol building and became home to Daniel Hastings, governor of Pennsylvania from 1895 to 1899.

Six other nineteenth-century governors also called Bellefonte home, and a monument to these statesmen stands in Talleyrand Park. A statue outside the courthouse honors Andrew Gregg Curtin, 15th governor of Pennsylvania, also known as the “Civil War Governor.”

Talleyrand Park, the prime location for many of Bellefonte’s annual events, was named after French statesman Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, who may have visited Bellefonte when he lived in exile in Philadelphia during the French Revolution.

Local legend says that he looked at the Big Spring and exclaimed “la belle fontaine!” (“the beautiful fountain!”), a name that stuck with the town. Today, Talleyrand Park also is home to the visitors center, housed in the 1889 train station, which during its heyday served 12 passenger trains a day. Also here is the George Grey Barnard Sculpture Garden, featuring a bust of Abraham Lincoln

by Barnard, a famed sculptor who was born in Bellefonte.

Farther along the waterfront from Talleyrand Park you’ll find history of a different sort. At

Hastings Mansion was home to Daniel Hastings, governor of Pennsylvania from 1895 to 1899.

the American Philatelic Society’s national headquarters and library, you can learn about world history from the perspective of stamp collecting. It’s all housed in the restored and renovated Pennsylvania Match Factory complex. In the early 1900s, before the advent of book matches and lighters, the factory was one of the country’s leading producers of wooden matches.

Several grand old homes in Bellefonte now serve as bed-and-breakfasts, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in local history, often including period furnishings.

For example, McCafferty House on Spring Street was constructed in 1883 by Charles

McCafferty, who built most of the homes in the Bellefonte Historic District. Our Fair Lady B&B operates in the 1883 Second Empirestyle house built by lumber baron John Ardell.

Second Empire is just one of many architectural styles you’ll find among Bellefonte’s historic residential and commercial buildings, many built around the time Victoria became queen of England in 1837. Gothic Revival features are evident in the Brockerhoff Hotel and the Reynolds Mansion B&B. Several Linn Street mansions demonstrate the symmetrical Italianate style, while the elaborate Queen Anne style is apparent in the Bush Arcade and The Queen B&B. As you stroll through downtown Bellefonte, take the time to look up at the varied architectural details adorning the historic buildings that today house a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and service businesses. You’ll find that Victorian Bellefonte is a beautiful backdrop for everything you do while you’re here. n

Trains are a big part of Bellefonte’s past, present, and future

The Nittany and Bald Eagle Railroad goes over Talleyrand Bridge during a fall-foliage tour.

There is much for visitors to see and do in Bellefonte. Antique and gift shops abound, and there are many restaurants where you can enjoy a good meal. If you like Victorian architecture, there is no shortage of wonderful buildings and homes to admire. One such building is the Victorian train station in Talleyrand Park. Built in 1889, it is home to Bellefonte’s Chamber of Commerce and the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society (BHRS).

Have you ever wandered through Talleyrand Park and wanted to know more about the railroad cars parked next to the train station? Or perhaps you’ve looked down the train tracks and wondered where they go. Well, like most of Bellefonte, the answers are wrapped in history. Those railroad tracks have a lot to do with what made Bellefonte such a successful place at the time all those lovely Victorian homes were being built.

Back in the town’s early days, iron ore was a valuable commodity, and Centre County had a rich supply. Many small iron furnaces cropped up in the area, but none could get very big without better transportation. Iron is heavy, however, and back then it was difficult to carry it by pack mule or wagon over rough roads. By the early 1800s, the businessmen of Bellefonte

wanted a better way. By 1834 a canal was under construction, though it would not reach Bellefonte until 1848. In 1839 the town chartered a railroad, but money and technology delayed progress on construction until 1857. Finally, in 1862, the railroad came to Bellefonte.

The tracks we see today, originally part of the Bellefonte and Snow Shoe Railroad, eventually became part of the largest company in the world at that time: the Pennsylvania Railroad. At one time, the tracks connected with Lewisburg, Tyrone, Lock Haven, and all points beyond.

When Bellefonte’s passenger service was at its peak, up to 20 trains a day stopped in town!

Today, the tracks go south to Pleasant Gap and Lemont. To the north, they connect with the mainline at Milesburg and continue on to Tyrone and Lock Haven, just as they did in the old days. The tracks still see plenty of trains. Most days see a freight train headed to or from Pleasant Gap. The Nittany and Bald Eagle Railroad hauls lime, limestone, cement, kitty litter, liquid asphalt, road salt, and other commodities to customers along the line.

Twice a year, the line even sees some passenger trains! Leaving from the train station in Bellefonte, passenger excursions run to Lemont, Axemann, Tyrone, and Howard. These trips are some of the biggest events of the year for the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society. With locomotives and crew donated by the Nittany and Bald Eagle Railroad, passenger cars from the Penn Valley Railroad, and, with help from the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority, which now owns the tracks in Bellefonte, the BHRS hosts Fall Foliage and Santa Express excursions in October and December, respectively. These events bring hundreds of visitors to Bellefonte, and many locals have made the Santa train an annual family tradition. The excursions complement the Fall Festival and Victorian Christmas events held each year in Bellefonte. They also provide a fundraiser for BHRS’s other activities.

Remember those rail cars we mentioned sitting by the station? Well, they have some history too.

BHRS owns these four cars: two passenger cars, a caboose, and a snowplow. The wooden snowplow and caboose are some of the last remaining equipment operated by the Bellefonte Central Railroad (BFC). Work is in progress to

preserve and restore the caboose, originally built in 1922. This caboose made the last trip from State College to Bellefonte before the BFC track was torn up. Over the last two years, the BHRS has removed the badly damaged roof structure and cupola. The next step is to replace a rotten beam at the top of one side of the caboose and to repair and stabilize the other side beam.

Once that work is completed, a new roof will be installed, and the current siding (not original) will be replaced with new wood matching the original design. It is hoped that the caboose will become a small museum where some of the history of Bellefonte’s railroads can be shown off.

The snowplow also needs some repairs.

Built around 1900 by Russell Snow Plow Co. of Ridgeway, the plow was acquired by BFC in 1919. The blade was completely rebuilt by the BFC shop sometime in the 1940s, making it entirely unique.

Across the NBER tracks from the caboose sit two fluted, stainless steel passenger cars. These are not just your average passenger cars: they are self-propelled! These two cars are known as Budd RDCs. The cars, manufactured in Philadelphia at the Budd Company’s Red Lion plant, are rail diesel cars. Each has two diesel engines mounted under the floor that allowed them to zip along at speeds up to 85 miles per hour. These cars were designed in the late 1940s and built between 1950 and 1962 to provide

a cheaper alternative to short-haul passenger service then pulled by steam engines. These cars had a cab at each end, so they could be driven either direction without turning. They came equipped with automatic transmissions and antilock brakes.

Although their design proved quite advanced and popular with many railroads, their timing was unfortunate, as, by the mid-1960s, most railroads were looking to abandon passenger service. A few heavily modified cars are still in use today. One of BHRS’s cars, #1967 built in March of 1953, is soon to be restored to operation.

The car will receive an overhaul to refurbish its mechanical systems, replace fogged up windows, and receive numerous cosmetic repairs. When completed in late 2014, the car is expected to return to excursion service running special-event trips over the NBER. Over the past several years, BHRS has been slowly growing its membership. The restoration projects mentioned above are only part of our activities. BHRS owns a mile of track leading into Lemont, and maintains that track. Over the

past year, BHRS has replaced more than 100 crossties, repaired portions of the roadbed, rebuilt a grade crossing, and kept the line clear of weeds and underbrush. This has allowed BHRS to bring three excursion trains into Lemont and to run a speeder-car event during the Lemont Strawberry Festival.
