While there are many potential causes of light sensitivity, including medical conditions like glaucoma or uveitis, a common source that many of us have experienced at one time or another is glare.
The Problem of Persistent Glare in School and Office Environments Whether it is from oncoming car headlights on a dark country road or the sudden brightness when stepping out into the sunlight after a movie, most of us have experienced the eyestrain caused by glare. While occasional glare is an unavoidable part of life, persistent glare in school and work environments is intolerable. Continuous exposure to glare can lead to eye strain, headaches, stress, and fatigue, potentially reducing productivity in workplaces by 15-21% compared to environments free of glare. In educational settings, insufficiently managed lighting may create distracting reflections on desks or projector screens, adversely affecting students’ capacity to read and learn efficiently.

Standards for Workplace Lighting Lighting in various spaces must adhere to accepted standards, such as the CE standard for workplace lighting (EN 12464-1:2011) and the Unified Glare Rating (UGR), which all help to minimise issues like glare. However, despite these standards, glare often persists in these environments. This is the challenge our new linear batten, the SCHOLAR PLUS, is designed to solve.
SCHOLAR PLUS: TrueUGR<19, Lighting Designer Approved The SCHOLAR PLUS combats glare with TrueUGR<19. TrueUGR is a ROBUS guarantee that the UGR labelled on our luminaires is not an estimate; it is fact. Engineered by Lighting Designers, our new linear batten not only drastically minimises glare directly impacting reading and writing tasks, but it maintains a wide 90° beam angle.

The Linear Batten Engineered by Lighting Designers The SCHOLAR PLUS is the culmination of a two-year collaborative effort between our New Product Development Team and Lighting Design Team. This final product is a linear batten, uniquely designed with a combination of features engineered to effectively combat glare.

Flat Design By choosing to construct the SCHOLAR PLUS with a flat design, we were able to provide a uniform lighting effect, eliminating shadows and greatly reducing potential glare. This type of design also allows for easy integration into suspended ceilings and wall-mounted installations.
Multi-Layer Diffuser The primary function of a diffuser is to soften light, ensuring an even distribution. A multilayer light diffuser, which consists of several diffusers stacked atop one another, further enhances this effect.
Individual LED Lenses LED lenses determine how the emitted light is distributed by angle and density. By having a lens on every single LED, we have effectively spread the light more uniformly across a broader surface area.
Flicker-free Driver Flicker-free drivers are specifically designed to eliminate flickering light which can cause eye strain and fatigue. This type of driver converts AC to DC and then increases the output frequency to several thousand hertz, which is imperceptible to the human eye.
