INTO MY TOILET

at my age now, the toilet may be the spot where i spend the most time when i am awake at home. and there was time when i still read books or even newspapers and magazines while sitting on the toilet bowl. yet i got addicted to the mobile surfing like every other one did when smart phone came into our life and took the reign soon after. the most obsessive thing about mobile phone however, is not the fancy apps or the essential phone functions but solely the camera and quick editing apps that would turn almost any shot right into a ready-to-print level of image that links to the later sharing action no matter it is facebook, instagram or flickr. one day when i was sitting inside as usual and accidentally switched on the camera, i saw something unusual on my screen which makes ordinary things so unordinary, the usually neglected scene became quite impressive when the hues and framing are working well. that encouraged me upon making a miniseries right inside the toilet where we generally think nothing much to share or to make images of. but i think it a feasible project even though i do think there is not many interesting details with my usual point of view. as i usually say that the photography nowadays is more about how you see everything rather than what you use, this basic concept about taking picture should also apply when i am in the toilet,

so i started taking pictures inside my tiny toilet when i got inside for the right reason. soon i found out it still requires some magic to emphasize what and how i see inside the space that my current htc j321e seems not working quite well enough. so i retook the pictures with an aps-c level camera and it turns out good enough to show what i thought. the close-up way i took shows the everyday details so differently that forces myself and maybe you too, to reflect upon the things you took for granted and ignored most of the time where actually resides countless details about our lives. that reminds me of some very old memory when i looked at a very boring and nonsense-like photography work by some famous photographer many years ago, i didn’t think it a photo worth looking at or have any other sublime meaning besides its poor image contents even it is from a big name and of course, outputted in very high quality. eventually somehow i am doing the same boring thing now which maybe simply because i am old enough to tolerate this bullshit.
