Does fashion influence you as a graphic designer at all?
Yes, within graphic design there are different trends and styles that come in and out of fashion. The chance and development on design over the past five years has seen a shift towards more minimalist design.
How would you say your upbringing has influenced your design? My parents were very much the, perfectionist type, nothing was never quite enough. I grew up in a middle class, Surrey house hold. We were encouraged to set goals and the ‘golden’ idea first before doing anything. Being surrounded by many luxurious material possessions, made me well aware of what was ‘good’ design and what was ‘bad’ design. My parents strived for clean minimalist living.
What is good taste? Something that sells to the eye and ultimately that person. When I was growing up, I associated good taste with the things that my parents brought. But that view changed as there marriage broke down because of too much of an investment in materials and not enough in family. Now my view is much more relationship orientated, which reflects in my design. Once possessions are gone they are gone.
“They can’t make you a cup of tea!”
What is you
“Create an eco-city. A city where everything runs via natural, sustainable resources. Where humans and nature can be successfully integrated. Design has to be intelligent.
If you had unlimited resources, what would you make?
r favourite animal?
The red squirrel, because it represents the UK in many ways. The way in which as soon as the grey squirrel came on the idea that the red began to die out. I feel that the red squirrel is a metaphor for a changing world. The grey squirrel represents mass production, mass consumption and the destruction of good.
