Vertical Living Farm

Master Project Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment Year: Location:

2013 – 2015 Suzhou, China

The two years Master Project involves master planning design, building conceptual design and construction. The first semester is a further development of a proposal for a new settlement in Suzhou, China. Introducing a city with an extensive network of canals that will accommodate a population of one

million. Working as a unit to establish manifestos in developing the ability to plan, shape and control the city by addressing the question raised by rapid urbanization in China. The loss of agricultural land was one of the manifestos established. China was once a self-sufficient country where they

were able to produce enough food for themselves while feeding the rest of the world. Due to the rapid development of the country farmers now live in unfamiliar urban conditions in place of urban sprawl and transitional spaces.

Typical Floor Plan - Residential & Farming Area The Vertical Living Farm tries to address this political issue through the investigation of how agriculture integrates within the vast urban development of Suzhou, China. Aiming to relocate landless farmers and allowing them to reclaim their place in the social economy by providing farmers with residential units, farming area and

market place to generate their income. Proposing to minimized the use of land area while maximizing the agricultural production in the city through the use of a vertical building typology. structural ability. The design for Vertical Living Farm is located right in the heart of Yuan, the new city settlement in Suzhou. Architecture School

Bachelor in Architecture - Stage 3 Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment Year: Location: Programs:

Spring 2012 Old Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland 2D & 3D AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop

Located at the junction of Bedford Road and St. Machar Drive, situated on the south side of Aberdeen University Library, approximately 7000-meter square. Expressing the building’s contextual concept through its form and circulation. The building proposed routes of connection between Aberdeen

University buildings that links students within surrounding buildings. The proposed design scheme provides teaching facilities for 250 undergraduate students, 20 postgraduate research students, 30 lecturers and 23 staffs. Three levels of utilised spaces with a total floor area of 5863-meter

square. The pedagogic concept of the Architectural School is creating flow of interactive spaces by encouraging different emotional responses through movement in a space. The sense of spiritual freedom for students to learn and adapt among their spouse, staffs and people around.

The Architectural School is divided into four connected blocks according to its functions with the consideration of environmental strategies, physical structures on site while corresponding to timber structural system. Each building sections has various site planning set backs creating a space for social gathering that draws visitors and occupants into the building. Metal

sheet cladding finishes applied through North and South elevations of the building with the intension of reflecting industrialized approach of contemporary buildings. East and West elevations adapted circular and continuous form that creates cyclical movement that embodied the nature towards the football field and garden area. The quantity and quality of light in functional

spaces are specifically considered in the process of building planning design. Strips of continuous roof lights and wall openings create voids for circulation spaces while diffusing light into adjacent spaces though full height glaze panels, reinforcing the volume and awareness of each space.

Art Gallery

Bachelor in Architecture - Stage 3 Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment Year: Location:

Winter 2011 Old Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland

Aberdeen University is founded in 1495 forms the heart of Old Aberdeen. The King’s Pavilion is located at the façade of Aberdeen University campus. The university proposed a conversion of this listed Pavilion into an Art Gallery in conjunction with the Art Walk design in the King’s College Master plan.

Group research on the issues of cultural significance has lead to a design concept that adapts a tectonic approach of expressing existing building structures. Light was the main architectural component that forms the gallery spaces. Proposed to cut back on the upper floor plates along the North and

South side of the building allows deeper light penetration into the ground floor plan. Artwork spaces were organised according to artists and type of art pieces that shapes gallery spaces in this King’s Pavilion.

Pudu Heritage Exhibition, Kuala Lumpur 2011

Pudu Heritage Community Project Voluntary Year: Location:

Summer 2011 Pudu District, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

This Community Project aimed to create awareness and appreciation for building heritage and conservation in Pudu district, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This district houses the city’s oldest bus station and the state’s very first Pudu Prison. The Kuala Lumpur city council has proposed to turn the oldest part

of the district into an International Business Centre, ready to demolish buildings that has long exist. Creating new street pattern that links between the city’s most well known Golden Triangle and the Central Business district.Collaborating with artists from Taiwan we went through research and

interviews in understanding the life of local residence. The locals were willing to provide us with their valuable photos and stories through their years spent in the area and helped us to learn more about the history of Pudu district. We managed to hold a two weeks exhibition displaying models and photos with the

help from enthusiastic residents with positive feedback and support. Preserving the Pudu Prison was part of this community project. The building was built in 1895 and was mentioned in the Guinness book of record in 1984 due to the impressive mural paintings done by the inmates

at that time. There were disapprovals against the demolition and this project was one of the acts of pursuing the building being part of Malaysian’s Heritage Preservation. Sadly the Urban Development Authority of Malaysia decided to carry on with the demolition and continue with the development plan

that involves an integrated commercial and transportation hub. Even though we did not manage to preserve this historical site, the response that we received has affirmed us that this project was a success where locals have built an awareness of building heritage and conservation.
