AB O U T M E I am a second year undergraduate student at the University of Melbourne with a major in architecture and a minor in urban planning. Upon graduating next year, I hope to pursue a master of architecture at the University of Melbourne before transitioning to commercial architecture. Throughout my design studios I strive for the exploration of geometry, repetition, abstraction, and materiality. I like to challenge traditional architecture norms while simultaneously justifying my choices with geometry and functionality.

SUN HOUSE

ABOUT

WEEK 14 REFINEMENTS

My concept was using diagonal walls to create increased wall area inside the house in addition to capturing the northern sun. I envisioned a flipped house with bedrooms on the ground floor and family living spaces on the first floor. I wanted the architecture to blur the lines between interior and exterior spaces. Each bedroom has access to a courtyard, with the master bedroom having access to a private courtyard. The living spaces on the first floor have glass sliding doors to allow access to the balcony spaces.

Updated the name of the project from sunflower house to sun house and added a siting plan to illustrate the surrounding context of the project.

The site is located between the busy Elgin Street and more quiet MacArthur Place North. Canning Street is a dominant bike path which makes it vital to ensure substantial bike parking is included in the design.

SUN HOUSE

ABOUT I utilized part one of the living house assignment as a foundation on which I improved many aspects of my design. I extended the balcony to the hallway of the first floor to further blur interior and exterior space. I rethought and solved numerous troublesome corners within the floor plans. I added a green roof to provide thermal benefits to the house. I also extended the size of the bike storage to make the space more usable.

WEEK 14 REFINEMENTS I updated the shadow diagrams to showcase the season in addition to the time of day. I also updated the siting plan to show more of the surrounding context and highlighted the house and the courtyard spaces differently.

STEPPING COMPLEX

ABOUT In this group project we envisioned a stepping form to let in light and activate the central communal space. We created three laneways that all connect at the central space to encourage community gathering. The roof gardens connect the landscape and the built forms. The central decking area is flexible space which can be used for bbq’s, gatherings, or relaxation. Access to the apartments is from the central space which activates the site. The three commercial areas act like anchors to draw people into the site.

WEEK 14 REFINEMENTS Changed the circulation diagram from an axonometric view to a plan view to add clarity. Updated the sun diagrams to showcase the different times and seasons separately instead of together. Reconfigured and resolved the floor plans by adding windows to bedrooms, creating a better flow, and adding front doors to activate Canning Street and MacArthur Place North. Reflected the changes to the floor plans in an updated site plan. Updated the perspectives to create atmosphere and removed the grass ontop of the green roof. Added a diagrammatic urban section.

PUSH + PULL

ABOUT For this project I envisioned a stepped form with pushed and pulled elements to create secluded or exposed spaces. I utilized the commercial areas as anchors to draw people into the site. I explored utilizing color and materiality to imply public vs resident communal spaces. I placed furniture, like cafe seating or reading benches in the laneways to further activate these spaces. I ensured that each residence has its own private garden or balcony space. I wanted each of the living rooms to face the communal central area to activate the space. I also added sliding doors from the residence to the communal spaces.

WEEK 14 REFINEMENTS I updated the analysis diagrams to explain the rationale behind my design decisions. I changed the library into a community book-share facility and reading room to encourage community cooperation. I added an entrance to the bike store from Canning street. I updated my perspectives and axonometrics to have a new green wall texture. I added a densification diagram to show how many bedroom units have been added to the site. Took new model photos with better lighting.

Creating new laneways and enhancing existing laneways to create circulation within the central spaces. Cutting and sculpting the previous assignment’s form to enhance circulation.

30°

Rotating the volumes to create balcony and roof garden opportunities for the residents on the first and second floor. The rotation is an abstraction of a stepping form to let sunlight into the spaces.

22

Utilizing a combination of 3.2m x 3.2m pushed and pulled elements to create moments of seclusion or exposure within the volume. The pushed and pulled elements create intimate spaces which can be transformed into a balcony or seating area.
