In her March 1 column, Mary Anna Towler expressed her fear of a Trump-induced tyranny. Our friends on the left and on the right share a common fear of tyranny. They also share the belief that their ideological opposites are determined to impose tyranny due to ignoble designs or because of passionate ignorance. While tyranny may sweep in upon the harsh tempest of nationalism, it is just as likely to drift in on the seductive breeze of collectivism. It is when these impulses and all those other well-intentioned “isms” peaceably neutralize each other that we may enjoy, as the Founders intended, times of uncertainty, disputation, and freedom. It seems Mr. Towler maintains his faith in our Constitution. It seems he is an optimist. I’m with him. TOM LAMME

Join our effort in fighting Citizens United
Our country is in a chaotic free-fall of change – good and bad. More citizens are activated to create change – good and bad. People are divided in their political arenas, which affects family and friendships. We are all victims of a central problem: Citizen’s United. That Supreme Court decision, made in 2010, created a free pass for elections to be bought by corporations or private billionaires. Dollars 2 CITY

equals speech. Those with money can pay for mass media to get out their message and, mostly, rip down the opposition’s message. Both liberals and conservatives are negatively affected by this. Most elected officials, on local, state and national levels, say they spend most of their time raising money to ensure their position. Most say they hate the rat race of bowing to lobbyists, but that is the only way to stay in their seat. Most say they are all for changing that, but few are willing to go public on this goal. Republicans, Democrats, independents, and conservatives are all opposed to Citizens United – in big numbers. Without the bank account, most citizens are shut out of any real hope of running for office or having a real voice. We have a way to cross the divide by communicating with one another and conversing about this issue. We can agree on our love of country and our frustration with being bought out of our own participation in democracy. Regardless of your party affiliation, who you voted for in November, or your race, religion, or gender, we are all Americans, and we can and must work together to stop this buying of our Democracy. This system will surely succeed in destroying democracy as it was conceived by our forefathers. That is already happening. Join us at Democracy Spring on our Facebook page to learn about our goals and our plans to reach them. We’d love to hear from you and welcome you into our dedicated group. We invite people from all sides of the political spectrum. This is not a Trumpbashing endeavor. We are all at risk, and we want our children to live in the democracy that is framed by the constitution. MARY ELLEN BLANCHARD

JCC’S, cemeteries, and a president’s angry rants Hate is living among us. Someone with a deep, dangerous loathing – of Jews and heaven knows who else – is spreading fear, here and throughout the country. In Rochester, it came first in the desecration of a Jewish cemetery on March 2. Then came the March 7 bomb threat at the Jewish Community Center on Edgewood Avenue. And then on Sunday, another bomb threat at the JCC. I’ve been picturing the Rochester terrorist as a single individual – one of our neighbors, working at one of our companies, shopping alongside us in our stores, driving our streets, and plotting the next move. But it could be more than one person. Maybe the Rochester terrorist doesn’t even live here. Maybe this stuff is emanating from some central headquarters somewhere. The attacks on cemeteries, though – in Rochester, in St. Louis, in Philadelphia – suggest chillingly that locals are either involved or are mimicking the e-mail terrorism. Also chilling are the signs that these are coordinated attacks: individual acts in places hundreds of miles apart, on the same day. Rochester’s JCC was one of seven hit by the threats on Sunday. The others were in Wilmington, Delaware; Indianapolis; Beachwood, Ohio; Houston, Milwaukee, and Vancouver. According to the Anti-Defamation League, that makes 117 Jewish facilities that have received bomb threats since January 1. Most of the facilities have been Jewish Community Centers, but the terrorism has also specifically targeted children: day-care centers, pre-schools, grade schools, high schools, and a children’s museum have all received threats. And the desecration in the cemeteries took place during the same period. Who is doing this? And why? Rochester’s terrorist isn’t alone. Is someone or a group of someones organizing this stuff? Or are anti-Semites acting independently, feeding off of the numerous internet sites that spread white supremacist and Christian-identity rantings? The FBI is pursuing the “who.” That leaves the “why.” Why this hatred toward Jews? Jews aren’t alone, of course. A recent Washington Post article cited other recent hate crimes: In Florida, a man tried to set fire to a convenience store he mistakenly thought was owned by Muslims. The 64-year-old man arrested for the incident said he wanted to “run the Arabs out of our
We don’t know who is committing this terrorism. But we certainly know who has made hate’s expression acceptable. country,” according to the Post. (The store’s owners are Indian.) In Washington State, a Sikh man was shot in his driveway. “The gunman reportedly told him to ‘Go back to your own country,” the Washington Post’s report said. In February, a gunman shot two fellow patrons at a bar in Kansas, reportedly yelling “Get out of our country” before firing. Both of his targets were from India. He killed one and injured another, along with another bar patron. Anti-Jewish, anti-black, anti-Muslim… none of this is new, of course. But it has come out in the open, and intensified, in the past year, as Donald Trump made the demeaning of others acceptable. I don’t think for a minute that Donald Trump is purposely encouraging the attacks aimed at American Jews, or that he condones them. So much of what he does is performance art that he may have intended simply to play to his base. Or show off. But he bears responsibility for what is happening. Words matter. And words embolden, particularly when someone with great stature and authority utters them. Here at home on Sunday afternoon, 12 Corners in Brighton was the site of a rally to express solidarity with the Jewish community. The event had been planned days previously, after the first threat to the JCC, but Sunday’s bomb threat heightened its importance. And as one of our photographers was standing on the corner of Winton and Monroe as the rally progressed, he watched as a car drove by and the driver yelled out the window at the rally crowd: “Donald Trump!” Donald Trump’s words matter. There are consequences to his angry rants. And we are witnessing those consequences now. rochestercitynewspaper.com

Divinity school to become hotel The new owner of the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School campus plans to develop it into a destination hotel and conference center and build a new building for the seminary at the corner of Highland Avenue and South Goodman Street. Top Capital of New York plans to invest $36 million to put the 90-year-old campus to new uses, with its highest priority being the preservation of the buildings. They were a key reason for the company’s interest in the campus in the first place, says Jim Payne, Top Capital’s director of marketing. The firm expects to retain all of the buildings
and to make, at most, minimal changes to the exterior, he says. The company hasn’t released detailed plans, but its concept is to develop a hotel and conference center that’s a unique attraction, and that will draw events such as weddings and business meetings. Before Top Capital starts the renovations, however, it will construct a new, 18,000-squarefoot building at the corner of Highland Avenue and South Goodman Street. The Divinity School will take up much of the building, which could also include some apartments for its students.
Divinity School President Marvin McMickle says he expects that the school will be able to make its move by fall 2018. Highland Park Neighborhood Association board chair Karl Waelder says the new building could work, depending on the designs, which neighbors are waiting to see. The association also supports creative reuse of the campus that maintains the open space and park-like use of the property, he says. The neighborhood group plans to be proactively involved with the developer and in the city’s process for rezoning the property, Waelder says.

Southwest city residents say that School 16 is essential to the continued health of neighborhoods, including the 19th Ward. They fear that young families won’t find the area desirable, despite the strong housing stock, without a neighborhood school.

Construction nears for School 16 update School 16 will transform from a small, wood-frame building to one of the most impressive in the Rochester City School District if all goes according to plans. The architectural planning phase for the school’s remodel is mostly complete, says district Chief of Operations Michael Schmidt. Parents, teachers, and neighbors can now better imagine what the school will look like when the work is finished sometime in 2018. The plans can be viewed on the SW Common Council’s website: http://bit.ly/2lxXU9z. School 16, which is in the southwest quadrant of the city at 321 Post Avenue, is part of the second phase of the $1.2 billion Rochester schools modernization program. Plans for the three-story building show a major addition that will house a new gymnasium and performance stage. The school’s old gymnasium will become a library and the old library space will be converted to classroom space. The building’s second floor and balcony area will be redesigned to house additional classroom space. “We’ve done quite a bit of work,” Schmidt says. “We’re renovating all of the building space and all mechanical systems will be updated.” The school will have new windows, heating, and ventilation and electrical systems.

SOCIAL JUSTICE | BY JEREMY MOULE
Advocates push again for ‘Raise the Age’
Raise the Age advocates say Cuomo’s proposal provides a fairer approach, one that’s better for both the youth and the communities they’ll inevitably return to. Most 16- and 17-year-old offenders aren’t charged with violent crimes, and they’re at a point where they can turn their lives around, they say. “Many problems have no clear or proven solution, but this one does,” Cuomo said in a statement last week. “By raising the age, we can ensure that juveniles receive the intervention and rehabilitation they need to break the vicious cycle of recidivism and increase public safety for all New Yorkers.” Mountains of research tell us that the
New York is one of only two states that treat 16- and 17-year-olds charged with crimes as adults.
Jerry Ingram’s life could have unfolded differently than it has. When he was 17, he and his cousin were arrested in front of their Broward County, Florida, apartment and were hit with drug possession and distribution charges, Ingram says. And since there was a school nearby, the charges carried extra weight. Ingram ultimately received a sentence of probation, but his cousin received a harsher penalty. “I was fortunate,” Ingram says. “I had a different judge than he had. I was given a second chance, where he was sentenced to three years in prison because of the school.” Ingram says he believes their sentences affected their paths in life; and a growing body of rigorous social and scientific research says he’s probably right. Ingram, who is now 41, went to theological school and is a youth minister with First Unitarian Church of Rochester, a mentor to at-risk teen boys from the city, and a father of eight. His cousin, on the other hand, has been in and out of prison for much of his life, he says. They are the same age. Ingram is a member of Roc/ACTS, a coalition of urban and suburban congregations that’s currently urging Rochester-area state lawmakers to support a Raise the Age proposal in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2017-18 budget. The plan would make longoverdue changes to the way New York 6 CITY

treats 16- and 17-year-olds charged with nonviolent crimes, Roc/ACTS members say. Here’s the problem Cuomo’s trying to fix: New York, by default, treats all 16- and 17-year-olds charged with crimes as adults. In Monroe County, 772 youths age 16 and 17 were arrested in 2016. All were initially routed through the adult system, though only a fraction were convicted and sentenced as adults, according to state Department of Criminal Justice Services stats. Many of the others had their cases diverted or were sentenced as youthful offenders. The approach is so obsolete that New York and North Carolina are the only two states left using it, and North Carolina lawmakers are debating their own set of reforms. Under Cuomo’s proposal, 16- and 17-year-olds who commit nonviolent offenses would enter the juvenile justice system instead. Cases involving violent offenders would still be handled by criminal courts, though Cuomo wants specially trained judges to oversee them. The proposal also provides for all adolescent offenders to have access to rehabilitative services, and it would ensure that if they’re incarcerated, they’re placed in either juvenile facilities or a specialized prison without adult convicts. Whether the proposal becomes law, however, may come down to its costs, which is what Senate Republican leaders have voiced concerns about.
teen years are a time of profound brain and behavioral development. In plain language, that means teens are still maturing. They often act on impulse and without much consideration for long-term consequences. They’re also malleable, which means that when they get into trouble, they often respond well to the rehabilitative services and treatments that form the core of the juvenile justice system. This is why Raise the Age advocates say adolescent offenders require a different approach than adults. Those same factors make youths vulnerable in adult facilities. “When you put kids in an environment with adult criminals, they have to fit in,” says Dr. Henry Cretella, a child psychiatrist, Sufi Order of Rochester leader, and Roc/ACTS member. “They’re hard-wired to do that. And then they learn these things. It’s like if you want a training ground for criminals, that’s what you do.” Roughly 80 percent of people who spend part of their teens in adult jails and prisons reoffend, according to a fact sheet from the statewide Raise the Age campaign. About 34 percent go on to commit serious, violent crimes, it says. Teens in adult prisons are also far more likely to commit suicide than teens in juvenile facilities, and they’re at greater risk of violence and sexual assault. And all of these problems disproportionately affect youth of color. More than 70 percent of the 16- and 17-year-olds arrested in New York are black or Latino, and of the 16- and 17-year-olds who are incarcerated, 80 percent are black and Latino. Jon Greenbaum, lead organizer for Roc/ACTS, draws a parallel between the adolescent offender disparity and attitudes about heroin users. As heroin use began to impact young, white suburbanites, society stopped looking at the problem as a moral failure and started treating it as an epidemic.
“We had a racial double standard about heroin use, and we’ve had the same thing about youth incarceration,” he says. “If 70 or 80 percent of the kids were white suburbanites, would we have ever allowed this horrible, crazy, ineffective system to continue? Obviously not.” Cuomo has asked state lawmakers to pass
Raise the Age legislation each session for the past few years. And each year, Senate Republicans prove to be the stumbling block. The governor included a Raise the Age measure in his budget proposal this year
to gain some leverage in negotiations. The Assembly has already passed a bill and would likely support Cuomo’s plan. The State Senate’s influential Independent Democratic Conference supports it, too. The Senate GOP, however, is again expressing reservations. Republican Senator Rich Funke’s position, which he explained in a statement, is shared by other members of his conference Funke says he doesn’t oppose the idea behind Cuomo’s proposal, but says “the devil will be in the details.” He has questions about the proposal’s effect on court dockets,
how facilities will be built or expanded, and how the state will cover long-term operating costs. He also worries that the state will push costs onto local governments. “All of these questions and more need to be answered with clear, compelling solutions before it earns my support,” Funke says in his statement outlining his position. The state budget deadline is March 31, and as that date approaches, debates around Raise the Age will intensify. The themes Funke touches on will come up again and again. But the states that have already made the switch haven’t found costs to be an issue.
And New York has already taken steps to develop a facility for many of the youths under 18 in the state prison system. “I drool at the level of detail that’s in this program,” says Cretella, who early in his career pushed to get an acute child psychiatric center in Rochester. It’s a work in progress, and some adjustments would have to be made once the reforms are in place. “If you’re asking for more detail, you’re asking for the impossible,” Cretella says.

HETSKO’S HEART MEDICINE | BY CHRISTINE CARRIE FIEN
PHOTO BY KEVIN FULLER 8 CITY
MARCH 15-21, 2017
SCOTT HETSKO HAD TO NEARLY DIE TWICE BEFORE HE COULD REALLY LIVE AGAIN
One of those times — what he calls the lowest point of his whole, nearly 10year ordeal — his heart was in arrest for over two minutes until medical staff in the cardiac unit at the University of Rochester Medical Center could revive him. “They were waiting and waiting and CPR-ing and all that, and they woke me up with a ‘zap’ and I made it back,” he says. “For me, it was like going to bed. I woke up and my chest was on fire because they shocked me.” You get the impression from watching Hetsko that this is a man who is all in, that the barely contained energy crammed inside his lean, athletic frame is just waiting for permission to explode. On television —he’s a meteorologist for 13WHAM News — Hetsko comes off as affable and wholesome, so when he lets slip the occasional expletive during this interview, it’s just a bit jarring. Most of us move through life vaguely aware of our impermanence, but Hetsko feels every tick off the clock acutely, and he’s determined to make the most of whatever time he has left, for himself, for his family, and for Shawn — the man who gave him his heart. Hetsko, now 46, had cardiac sarcoidosis — a rare autoimmune disease in which the body attacks itself. The cause is unknown. Inflammatory cells invade the heart, destroying the organ’s muscle tissue. The fibrous tissue that replaces the muscle tissue doesn’t contract very well, and the heart becomes electrically unstable. The combination puts the sufferer at risk of sudden death. In Hetsko’s case, the risk was moderately high, says Dr. Leway Chen, UR Medicine transplant cardiologist. Hetsko kept his battle to himself for the most part, which is not easy to do when you’re a popular public figure and well-meaning people feel entitled to share in even the most intimate details of your life. Publicly, all Hetsko said was that he was dealing with a health problem and had to step away from work for an undetermined amount of time.
What was happening was that he was waiting for a new heart. He spent three months in the hospital waiting — donors and recipients are matched based on a number of criteria — and then five more recovering after the operation. He was lucky: his overall good health, his relative youth, and his favorable blood type helped him get a heart relatively quickly; 22 people die every day in the US waiting for an organ transplant, according to the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network. Hetsko’s recovery has been optimal; he’s had no reason to go back to the hospital except for routine tests. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is that the clock is ticking. A donor heart lasts, on average, 11 years. The longest anyone’s ever lived with one is 33 years. “Our bodies are pretty smart,” Chen says, “and they realize that, ‘Hey, this is something that’s not me,’ and are constantly trying to attack the heart and get rid of it.” The main reason that heart transplant patients don’t survive indefinitely is because the medications they take to reduce the risk of rejection have serious side effects and can cause kidney failure and other problems. Hetsko has absorbed this information, and it’s changed the way he lives his life. “It makes me think differently about everything I do,” he says. “I don’t think 30 years out anymore. I’m not going to worry about my retirement.” “When I built the kids a nice play set out back, I didn’t care about the cost of it, because it’s just money. This is happiness now, and this is the time we have now. I don’t know if I’m going to live to see my grandkids. But I know I have my family now, so that’s what I’m going to live in.” Hetsko is married and has three young children: 11-year-old Logan and 4-year-old twins Julia and Jack. He talked to CITY recently about his ordeal and how it affects his life. The following is an edited version of that discussion. continues on page 10 rochestercitynewspaper.com

I do, but I don’t talk about it. I know he was a young guy, in his mid-20’s. He was an Army vet. He always wanted to be a donor, if anything ever happened to him. He was a good man; always cared about honor. People thought of him in an honorable way. I’ve met his parents and all his siblings now. It’s not like you see on the news, when you jump into the arms and cry. We didn’t have that moment; we don’t know each other. It was a moment of gratitude for me and my wife. And it was a moment of caution because you’re meeting somebody under the worst circumstance, for them. I didn’t want anybody to die. But someone has to die for you to get a heart. That’s the bottom line. And that person was 20 years younger than me, had his whole life ahead of him, had people who loved him, had a girlfriend. So he had his life. And for that to happen was devastating. And for me to benefit from it is guiltwrenching in many ways.

When your heart enlarges, it can’t squeeze and pump. It’s like you’re in your own human prison. I had to go to the hospital, and that night I was told I needed a pacemaker. I didn’t know what the hell a pacemaker did. So the next morning, I had a pacemaker installed. The first doctor told me to consider getting my affairs in order, which really scared the hell out of me.
Basically, what I was told was, “We don’t

The little ones didn’t really know. They were 2. So they came and saw me in the hospital and said, “Hey, dad!” And we gave them ice cream. Logan was 9, so he obviously was quite aware of it. I think he’s worried it’s going to happen again. He always asked me if I would “pass out.” I think he meant to say, “Pass away.” I said to him, “We’re trying not to.” We don’t want to get too deep with it, because I don’t want to rob his childhood. My point is, why worry about it? I’ve been through the hell of it; I’m not going to worry about it anymore. This is all golden; it’s gravy.
The pacemaker did its job, but the heart
over time just got sicker and sicker, and you just can’t stop that without doing something invasive.
And they basically said, “You’re not going
to make it through the summer if you don’t come in.” Were you confident that you would get a heart?
It’s hard to get a heart. Out of the 100 percent of people who need a heart, only about 34 percent get one. So, 66 percent don’t make it. I came in with the information that I was the only guy waiting who was my body type — so I was, like, the top of the list for a guy like me. Because it’s a competition. If there’s another guy like me who’s been there before me, he gets the heart first. What was your reaction when you found out that a heart was available?
PHOTO BY KEVIN FULLER 10 CITY MARCH 15-21, 2017
I said, “You’re fucking kidding me.” That’s exactly what I said. And then I cried.
What was your lowest point?
The hospital. I remember a couple of nights, FaceTiming with my kids, just crying, weeping afterward — just thinking, “This fucking sucks.” But the lowest point was right after I arrested for two and a half minutes, and then when I woke up, there’s 20 people in my room, asking questions: ‘What is today?” “What’s your name?” They want to make sure that your brain didn’t suffer damage.
Scott Hetsko’s health challenge affects not only him but also his wife Jennifer and their three young children: 11-year-old Logan, left, and 4-year-old twins Julia and Jack. “I don’t know if I’m going to live to see my grandkids,” says Hetsko. “But I know I have my family now, so that’s what I’m going to live in.” PHOTOS PROVIDED BY SCOTT HETSKO
That was a scary time. They said, “Listen, if that happens to you again, you’re probably not coming back or you’re going to be brain damaged or physically damaged to the point that you can’t get a heart.” Realizing that you almost died weighs on you. I didn’t leave that room for two days because I was afraid I was going to die. I was afraid to do anything. What was your recovery like?
I recovered great. I was out of the ICU in 36 hours. I walked to my room — not easily. I don’t remember much about ICU. I remember them pulling this fluid out of my chest and the pressure was intense and very painful. It’s a rough go for a while. Chest surgery is tough. For three months, you’re really in big pain. Then once that goes away, you really start feeling great. But you can’t get comfortable. The grind is the biopsies. When you first get the transplant, they have to go into your neck, through your vein, every week to check for rejection. They take pieces of the heart out. And
then it’s every two weeks. Now it’s every three months. You’re getting blood work constantly. I’m constantly reminded of what’s going on. Every time I throw pills in my mouth, I remember why I’m doing it. A lot of people don’t take the time to take care of themselves. I treat this as my job. I have to take the medication. I have to stay healthy. I have to exercise, because it’s my duty to this guy’s heart. To Shawn. My duty to my family. I was given this great chance. Am I going to piss it away, or am I going to work hard? After the surgery, you’re just grateful to be alive. After that, you’re in recovery mode for half a year. Then when things get normal, you start thinking about your mortality again. You have weird dreams. I’ll constantly, once a week, have a dream about dying or something happening. But that’s just what your brain is going to do to you. If you wait for the other shoe to drop, you’re not living. What am I doing to do, sit in a corner and not live? The whole point of this is to live.
What has the community’s reaction been like?
Oh, my God — an outpouring of support. I didn’t want it to be this “Ferris Bueller” thing: y’know, “Save Ferris” billboards. Everybody knew I had heart problems, but when it got to the point that I had to go in, I didn’t tell anybody why, publicly. It’s a tough thing to straddle, your “celebrity” with the fact that you want to be private about something that’s special to you and your family. Plus, it’s not fair to my kids and to my wife to put them through all that. When I got home and it was announced, I had, I’d say, at least 800 cards. Some people put money in. I’m like, “Don’t give me your money.” Just the outpouring is humbling, and you’ll never be able to repay people for that. Will you eventually need another transplant?
People CAN get a second transplant. A lot of people die from other illnesses that are associated with the drugs that you take so you don’t reject. Kidney failure, liver failure, cancer — all these things are possible with someone who’s on the medication I’m on.
A kidney transplant could be in my future; leukemia; who the hell knows? The best news about heart transplants is that people live longer with them now than they did 20 years ago, 30 years ago. So I’m in a great time. Maybe in a decade the doctor says, “Hey, we’re going to 3D-print you a heart.” Maybe I do get another transplant when I’m 63. I’d definitely be willing to give it a shot. I run 5K’s now. I feel great. I feel like a new man. A lot of people try to look at you with sympathy, [he whispers] “How are you feeling?” And I go, “Don’t do that, because I’m great!” My Number 1 objective is to say, “Hey, this is awesome! What a great second chance I’ve got! Come on, look at me!” All I know is that Shawn’s heart is living in me, and it’s great, and I’m just very grateful for the fact that I’m here. City Restaurant Group recently reopened the popular Tony D's in its location in Corn Hill. Executive Chef Jay Speranza (right) is back, along with a menu that features most of the restaurant's dishes, like the (left) Greens and Beans. PHOTOS BY KEVIN FULLER

In the restaurant scene, closings aren’t anything new. It’s the nature of the industry: new places sprout up all the time and other locations lose their leaves. Back in September, though, the popular Italian bistro Tony D’s closed its doors following the unfortunate deaths of co-owners Chris DeGrazia and Tony DiCesare, and it loudly reverberated through Rochester. Tony D’s opened in August 2008, and brought quality food and a genuine
atmosphere to Corn Hill. Having a meal there was like going to Nana’s house. Its success stemmed from the guidance of DeGrazia and DiCesare; their charm bred a devoted following, which is why people cared so deeply when they passed. Diners latched onto the warm presence both men provided. “Their spirit will always be in these walls,” says Tony D’s Executive Chef Jay Speranza as he surveys the restaurant. City Restaurant Group (of which Speranza is a partner) reopened the beloved eatery on February 11. The group also owns City Grill, Hooligans in Webster, and City Tavern in Victor. Speranza has been with Tony D’s since the restaurant began. “I was fortunate enough to have guys like Tony and Chris,” Speranza says. “We became very close friends and had a nice little business together.” Many aspects of Tony D’s have remained the same. The trademark mural, based off members of DeGrazia and DiCesare’s family,
still adorns a wall of the dining area. Many of the staff who were employed during the closing in September have returned. But most importantly, the menu that resonated with diners is mostly the same. Crowd favorites like the Greens and Beans and Meatballs Al Forno are still on the menu, and the coal-fired pizza oven (which also roasts the aforementioned meatballs) is still a cornerstone of the menu. Speranza knew he had to keep things the same when reopening. “I don’t want to, but even if I did, if I was sick of doing this menu, it could never happen,” Speranza says. “People would lose their marbles.” Speranza did change some things about Tony D’s, though they are miniscule: new light fixtures and ceiling fans have been installed, and the entrance location has been changed, which might confuse regulars. Now, patrons walk into a renovated vestibule with an up to date hostess desk. Every change is in line with the ambiance the restaurant has
brought for years. If you were once a fan of Tony D’s, you will probably continue to be. Speranza is aware of all those fans and he understands why they keep coming back. He is confident when talking about what separates Tony D’s from the rest of the booming dining scene. “I don’t think there’s much of a mystery to the business, the hard part is getting it done and staying consistent with it,” Speranza says. “But I think our commitment to the food program and the service program has remained strong and I don’t think anybody does it better.” The environment Tony D’s breeds is infectious and certainly fills a desired niche in the Flower City. “There’s always going to be a place for great food and great service.” Speranza explains. “Our customers, our guests, are always going to feel like an extended family.”

Robert Strauss describes the group’s concert this weekend, “A Narrow Bridge,” as “about being a light in the darkness — a call to be a beacon of hope for those who feel hopeless.” RGMC will do that, and inspire others, through its performances of songs like “Bridge over Troubled Water” and “The Sound of Silence” as well as “Tyler’s Suite,” a choral song cycle by nine highly varied composers. The nine songs offer reflections on the life and death of Tyler Clementi, the 18-yearold gay man who took his own life in 2010 after an attack of cyber-bullying by his college roommate. — BY DAVID RAYMOND
After studying with Kenny Barron at Rutgers University, pianist Noah Haidu honed his skills on the jazz scenes of Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Queens. It paid off when his reputation led to work with top players like Mike Stern, Benny Golson, and Eddie Henderson. His latest album, “Infinite Distances” — featuring a suite based on ideas about relationships, loss, and self-realization, inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke — not only showcases Haidu’s keyboard prowess, it also further solidifies his roles as a composer and bandleader. One of the most distinctive characteristics of Haidu’s latest album is how much of a group effort it is. There are superb solos at every turn, and the voicings of horn charts — with Sharel Cassity and Jon Irabagon on saxophones, and Jeremy Pelt on trumpet and flugelhorn — are as fresh as they are quirky. The album is full of intricate yet engaging melodies, from beautiful ballads (the title tune) to up-tempo bursts of energy like the appropriately named “Momentum.” Also contributing greatly are John Davis and Mark Ferber on drums, and Peter Brendler and Ariel Alejandro de la Portilla on bass. — BY RON NETSKY

I’ve been a fan of the Squire (Chris Earl) since the beginning. Same goes for Phil Marshall, who shows up with his guitar on The Squires of the Subterrain’s brand new 12-song collection of quirky pop nuggets, “Slightly Radio Active.” This has essentially been a one-man studio project, with the Squire in his South Wedge basement laboratory playing most of the instruments and producing it as well. (The album was mastered by Saxon’s Dave Anderson). The Squire has banged out a ton of records down there. What’s different with this new album is its looseness and, in a few spots, its sloppiness. Now the looseness lends itself to humanizing the project as if it were all played with multiple live musicians as they tackle the Squire’s sugary Beatles-esque, Big Star sound. To me, the occasional sloppiness indicates perhaps a rush to finish the project. But you’ll hardly notice it as “Slightly Radio Active” fits nicely on the shelf in The Squires of the Subterrain’s overall catalogue. A good record, just not the best. — BY FRANK DE BLASE

MARCH 23 THROUGH APRIL 1 “SHINE THE LIGHT” AT JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF GREATER ROCHESTER, 1200 ELMWOOD AVENUE “TAKE ME TO JERMANY” BY CHARLOTTE SCHMITZ AT NAZARETH COLLEGE SHULTZ CENTER, 4245 EAST AVENUE. INFO@DEEPARTS.ORG; DEEPARTS.ORG [ PREVIEW ] BY REBECCA RAFFERTY
Amid news this last weekend of a second bomb threat to the Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester — and the third case of anti-Semitic hostility in Rochester in recent weeks — Deborah Haber is pushing onward to finalize plans for a series of arts events that will be held this month at the JCC and Nazareth College. “Finding Home: Shine the Light” is a multi-media community show exploring refugee displacement and the search for home. Sadly ever-relevant, the project spotlights different groups that have been displaced and the struggle to start over in new, often hostile places. Haber says that while the intimidation is shocking, support for the Jewish community is becoming even stronger. “People are rallying around not only our JCC, but also JCCs around the country,” she says. “Finding Home: Shine the Light” is presented by theater organization DEEP Arts, of which Haber is the executive artistic director, in collaboration with the JCC of Greater Rochester, the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester, and Nazareth College. The JCC will host a fine art glass exhibition and silent auction, and Nazareth will host a photo exhibition of Charlotte Schmitz’s images of contemporary refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. The project’s roots evolved from Haber’s idea to create a musical to commemorate her own parents’ story of displacement. Four years in the making, “Moses Man: Finding Home” tells the story the two Holocaust survivors’ nine-year journey from Vienna in 1938, through Europe, and finding hope, freedom, and home in America in 1947, Haber says. “For them, a pathway to ‘finding home’ was relentlessly obstructed, and their journey’s end seemed unobtainable.” But as she worked on the show’s book and lyrics, with Casey Filiaci composing the music, Haber looked around the world and saw that little has changed. “This is now the plight of millions of desperate, displaced 18 CITY MARCH 15-21, 2017

people in the world suffering with little or no hope of respite,” she says. Haber describes the effort to make a musical about the Holocaust as conjoining “Fiddler on the Roof ” and “Les Miserables,” and focusing on perseverance amid discrimination and danger. Haber and Filiaci noted important parallels between refugee issues of the past and present. While workshopping “Moses Man” in the 2015 New York Musical Festival, Germany opened its borders to waves of refugees from the Middle East. “Casey and I looked at each other and said, ‘Wow, are you seeing this?’ We knew we had to do something,” she says. They decided to take a step back and address this issue in the play in a way that wasn’t just a token, superficial afterthought. Through a connection with a professor at Indiana University, Haber planned an “Art and Refugees” symposium at the college, which will take place in April. But it was important to Haber to bring this project to Rochester, where her story began, so she reached out to Nazareth College president Daan Braveman, who was enthusiastic about it all. Nazareth will showcase “Take me to Jermany” (sic), a series of polaroids of refugees taken by Charlotte Schmitz. Each of the photos have writing across the image by the subjects in the shots, which provide personal testimonies of what is happening to them. Haber says that her project’s emphasis is not on political ideas, but on human compassion. “Refugees are not disposable people,” she says. Because Nazareth has limited space, the JCC will host the fine art glass exhibit
and silent auction. The exhibit “Shine the Light” will present Laura Donefer’s “Todesmarche Revisited,” an installation of cast glass and cement footprints — some of which were taken from actual Holocaust survivors — created in commemoration of those who were forced into the Nazi’s death marches. The exhibit will also showcase work by glass artists Michael Taylor, Alex Bernstein, Jack Schmidt, Daniel Clayman, Michael Rogers, Eunsuh Choi, Laura Donefer, John Littleton, Kate Vogel, Anna Booth, and Charlie Miner. An opening reception will take place Thursday, March 23, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with an artist talk by Donefer at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but photo ID is required in light of recent security threats. Additionally, on Thursday, March 30, the creators of “Moses Man: Finding Home” will present “Finding Home: Creators’ Journey of a New Musical,” a multi-media exploration of the creative process and how current world events keep transforming the musical. The presentation will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Nazareth College’s Linehan Chapel. Admission is free. Haber is also working with Blue Sky Project to create a documentary about the ongoing process of creating the musical, from its Holocaust origins to the inclusion and collision of contemporary refugees’ journeys.

SPECIAL EVENT | “TWO KINDS OF FEAR” As part of the Rochester’s Rich History series at Central Library, Bill Pruitt intertwines the stories of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass and the legacies of the two human rights activists in “Two Kinds of Fear.” Based on published archives, Pruitt takes listeners from Anthony and Douglass’ youth through their times in Rochester when their paths began to meet. “All I did was select from the record, but it’s a real story about what they felt they must do and what they had to deal with,” Pruitt says. “They lived through the same things we are living through today.” Pruitt will perform “Two Kinds of Fear” on Saturday, March 18, at Central Library of Rochester, 115 South Avenue. 1 p.m. Free admission. For more information, call 428-7300 or visit libraryweb.org. — BY KIARA ALFONSECA
ART | “VISIO STELLAE” Self-taught painter and graphic designer John Bertolone defines his art “as a striving to visualize the unseen forces that are at play and how they influence our seen world.” His acrylic and digital paintings blend feminine portraiture, animal deities, geometry, and cosmic debris in the full and glorious color spectrum. In his artist statement he says that his work alludes to the way unseen forces fuel our world, and seeks to create “metaphysical stepping stones to the divine realms of consciousness.” Through March 31, the Art Museum of Rochester (610 Monroe Avenue) is presenting “Visio Stellae,” a solo exhibition of Bertalone’s work. AMoR’s hours are Wednesday through Friday, 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., and admission is free. For more information, call 615-9015 or visit facebook.com/ArtMuseumOfRochester. THEATER | “TWISTED TALES OF TERROR” If you’re fond of scary stories, but you could do with some lightheartedness these days, check out Jeanine Harvey’s madcap play, “Twisted Tales of Terror,” which will be performed this week under the direction of Dianne Schaumberg at Stages (third floor at the Auditorium Center, 875 East Main Street). Set in a graveyard, the story incorporates many classic creepster tales — including “Dracula,” “Frankenstein,” “The Three Werewolves,” “Jekyll and Hyde,” “The Tragic Tale of the Mummy,” and “The Three Witches” — as narrated by Claudia, the Dark Tales Guardian, to her husband, Igor. As she tells the tales, the characters come to life, but with a twist. Swapping terror for comedy, the plotlines take unexpected turns that include a tidy, happy ending. “Twisted Tale of Terror” will be staged Friday, March 17, through Sunday, March 19. Evening performances take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and matinees take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $10. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 935-7173 or visit mjtstages.com. — BY REBECCA RAFFERTY

In the musical “Hands on a Hardbody” — Blackfriars Theatre’s next show, and the audience pick at the company’s Season Soiree last year — the competition is simple: 10 Texans try to outlast each other with their hands on a brandnew Nissan “hardbody” pickup. The last person standing drives it home. The relatively recent Broadway musical, with book by Doug Wright and music by Trey Anastasio (of Phish) and Amanda Green, is based on a documentary of the same name, in which a competition in Longview, Texas, lasted 77 continuous hours (we can assume the Blackfriars show won’t be quite as long). This production is co-directed by Mary Tiballi Hoffman and Danny Hoskins, with musical direction by Matt Wegman and choreography by Mandi Griffith-Gurrell. An interesting bit about this show: it took Blackfriars and Hoselton Nissan around six months to find the right model truck to use in the show — well, you’ve got to have a real truck on stage. “Hands on a Hardbody” will be performed Friday, March 17, through Sunday, April 2, at Blackfriars Theatre, 795 East Main Street. Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. on Saturday, March 18); Sundays at 2 p.m.; and Thursdays, March 23, and March 30, at 7:30 p.m. $31.50$39.50. 454-1260; blackfriars.org. — BY JAKE CLAPP

Monkey business “Kong: Skull Island”
after the Vietnam War. John Goodman plays Bill Randa, a crackpot scientist who believes (PG-13), DIRECTED BY JORDAN VOGT-ROBERTS that ancient monsters still exist on Earth, and he NOW PLAYING desperately wants to prove it. With the help of his assistant (Corey Hawkins), Randa convinces [ REVIEW ] BY ADAM LUBITOW a US Senator (Richard Jenkins) to give his crew the necessary funding and even a military escort “Kong: Skull Island” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts — led by Colonel Packard (Samuel L. Jackson in clearly paid attention to the criticisms leveled at the Samuel L. Jackson role) — to venture to Skull Gareth Edwards, whose 2014 “Godzilla” reboot Island, an isolated South Pacific location where he used a less-is-more approach to the massive, believes these creatures might be found. Along for atomic lizard. By contrast, Vogt-Roberts gets the the ride is a war photographer (Brie Larson) and human-smashing, monster action going early a British SAS officer (Tom Hiddleston, woefully and often. He loads his movie up with as many miscast as a dour, square-jawed hero type). man-eating beasts as he can fit into the two-hour It turns out Randa’s not such a crackpot runtime. Yet somehow we come away with a after all, as no sooner do the scientists start movie that’s only slightly more exciting than a day dropping bombs (supposedly for the purposes of at the petting zoo. seismographic mapping) than Kong appears to Set in the same universe as Edwards’ film, swat their helicopters out of the sky and lay waste “Skull Island” takes place in the 1970’s, shortly to a large portion of the expedition team. The crew gets separated, eventually crossing paths with a World War II fighter pilot (John C. predators are a species of giant, toothy reptiles the pilot dubs “skullcrawlers.” Vogt-Roberts’ “Kong: Skull Island” is an oldschool monster movie in its most conventional form. Any sense of personality has been buffed away to give us the most eccentricity-free version of studio filmmaking hundreds of millions of dollars can buy. Like “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow before him, Vogt-Roberts is a Sundance alum plucked from the world of independent cinema and gifted the keys to a massive franchise after finding success with a micro-budgeted indie (in this case “The Kings of Summer”). Also like Trevorrow, there’s some major growing pains as Vogt-Roberts struggles to adapt from small-scale storytelling to the world of maximalist, blockbuster filmmaking. It doesn’t feel like the director considered much beyond what would look cool on screen. He tosses out references to monster and war movies of the past, but never really adds anything new to the mix. “Apocalypse Now” is an obvious touchstone, although the influence doesn’t extend much below surface aesthetics, accompanied by an obvious soundtrack of 70’s-era needledrops (expect a lot of Creedence Clearwater Revival). Vogt-Roberts can craft a striking image, but when every shot’s a money shot, they start to lose their impact. As good as it looks, “Kong: Skull Island” is rarely exciting or fun to watch — and nothing is as memorable or terrifying as the insect pit that Adrien Brody and company had to fight their way out of Peter Jackson’s “Kong” remake in 2005. The script does attempt to say something more meaningful, admonishing the use of

military violence against that which we don’t understand, and how humanity has a nasty habit of creating its own enemies through fear and aggression. It’s ripe material for the kaiju genre — after all, the original Japanese “Godzilla” was a potent metaphor for a country still reeling from the devastating impact of nuclear war. But wrapped around a movie in which a gas mask-wearing Tom Hiddleston slices through a flock of pterodactyls with a katana, the message gets muddled. There’s also way, way too many characters. Sure, you need those extraneous people around to be smooshed by Kong’s mighty paw or skewered by the legs of a giant spider. But between the soldiers and the scientists, there’s far too many to keep track of or care about. Even Larson and Hiddleston — two of our most likeable and charismatic actors — barely make an impression. But the prehistoric creatures of “Skull Island” are impressively rendered, particularly Kong himself. The film gives us the largest and most detailed version of the mighty ape we’ve seen on screen; performed by motion-capture actors Toby Kebbell and Terry Notary, he’s never less than convincing. But Vogt-Roberts chooses to portray him as more force of nature than full-blooded character. As impressive an effect as he is, Kong lacks the wonderful characterization that Jackson’s film provided. For someone of such monstrous size, as a character he’s curiously weightless. Visit rochestercitynewspaper.com on Friday for additional film coverage, including a review of “The Belko Experiment.”

Fun [ NEWS OF THE WEIRD ] BY CHUCK SHEPHERD
Exploiting Villains
In February, two teams of South Korean researchers announced cancer-fighting breakthroughs — by taking lessons from how two of medicine’s most vexing, destructive organisms (diarrhea-causing salmonella bacteria and the rabies virus) can access often-unconquerable cancer cells. In journal articles, biologist Jungjoon Min of Chonnam National University described how his team “weaponized” a cancer-fighting invader cell with salmonella to stir up more-robust immune responses, and nanoparticle expert Yu Seok Youn’s Sungkyunkwan University team coated immunizing cells with the rabies protein (since the rabies virus is remarkably successful at invading healthy cells) to reach brain tumors.
Unclear on the Concept
Gemma Badley was convicted in England’s Teesside Magistrates’ Court in February of impersonating British psychic Sally Morgan on Facebook, selling her “readings” as if they were Morgan’s. (To keep this straight: Badley is the illegal con artist, Morgan the legal one.) Michigan is an “open carry” state, and any adult not otherwise disqualified under state law may “pack heat” in public (except in a few designated zones). In February, an overly earnest Second Amendment fan, James Baker, 24 (accompanied by pal Brandon Vreeland, 40), believed the law was an invitation to walk into the Dearborn police station in full body armor and ski mask, with a semi-automatic pistol and a sawed-off rifle (and
have Vreeland photograph officers’ reactions). (Yes, both were arrested.) Wells Fargo Bank famously admitted last year that employees (pressured by a company incentive program) had fraudulently opened new accounts for about 2 million existing customers by forging their signatures. In an early lawsuit by a victim of the fraud (who had seven fraudulent accounts opened), the bank argued (and a court agreed!) that the lawsuit had to be handled by arbitration instead of a court of law because the customer had, in the original Wells Fargo contract (that dense, fine-print one he actually signed), agreed to arbitration for “all” disputes. A February Wells Fargo statement to Consumerist.com claimed that customers’ forgoing legal rights was actually for their own benefit, in that “arbitration” is faster and less expensive.
News That Sounds Like a Joke
Ex-Colombo family mobster and accused hitman “Tommy Shots” Gioeli, 64, recently filed a federal court lawsuit over a 2013 injury at the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York City. He fell and broke a kneecap while playing ping-pong (allegedly because of water on the floor), awaiting sentencing for conspiracy to commit murder. The New York Post also noted that the “portly” Gioeli, who was later sentenced to 18 years, was quite a sight at trial, carrying his “man purse” each day.
[ LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION ON PAGE 30 ] [ LOVESCOPE ] BY EUGENIA LAST ARIES (March 21-April 19): Your options are open when it comes to love and romance; however, your motives must be based on what’s most important to you when it comes to relationships. Don’t settle for anything but the whole package. Physical attraction will not last if you don’t have a mental connection as well. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): It’s up to you to make things happen when dealing with a romantic relationship. Make the first move or start a dialogue with someone you care about regarding your intentions and long-term plans. It’s important to take a persistent and persuasive position when it comes to love.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Get out and enjoy the company of those you find stimulating. Spending time with people you work alongside or who share your interest in specific activities will open an opportunity to expand your relationship. Be open and upfront to avoid gossip or unnecessary interference. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Be careful what you wish for when it comes to love. You are likely to be attracted to someone flirtatious and fickle. At the first sign of indiscretion, back away and avoid heartache, disappointment and anger. Don’t let looks and smooth talk mislead you.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Don’t let jealousy or possessiveness stand in the way of true love. Making assumptions and insecurity will be your downfall. Trust in you and what you have to offer, and rely on your effervescent personality to persuade someone you love to entertain the thought of spending more quality time with you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Plan to do something physical or that will take you to a destination you have never been before, and you will encounter an emotionally passionate connection with someone looking to make similar personal changes to his or her life. Enjoy the moment, and be open to suggestions.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Wanting perfection will lead to loneliness. People grow and change as they age, so what may be perfect initially can transform as you move forward. Don’t rule out someone who is kind of special because he or she doesn’t match up 100 percent to your high standard. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your passion will mount and your desire to engage in a unique encounter with someone unlike you will lead to interesting days and nights. Don’t let tradition or culture diminish your chance for happiness. If you choose to limit whomever you consider as a potential partner, you will miss out.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You’ll be in demand when it comes to love. Giving the impression that you are a player will lead to a reputation that will keep someone you really want to be with on guard and at a distance. If you love someone, make and honor a commitment. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You won’t see things clearly. Someone you love is likely to be unpredictable and self-indulgent. Look past the surface qualities that attract you, and you’ll discover you are probably best to take a pass. Love is best built on trust, loyalty and common interests, not looks alone.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Take the plunge and make a commitment to someone you love. Building a future that is based on not only love but also on the history you share and the dreams each of you have will lead to a long-lasting union filled with hope, strength and togetherness. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don’t get stuck in a rut when it comes to affairs of the heart. Step outside your comfort zone and be willing to be who you are, not who someone else wants you to be. True love is dependent on transparency and the willingness to share each other’s eccentricities.

History, Character, and Charm Abound
237 Merriman Street The Neighborhood of the Arts is one of Rochester’s most vibrant neighborhoods. An eclectic blend of art, history, and architecture, NOTA overflows with galleries, shops, loft apartments, and restaurants--many of which are located in refurbished factory buildings once part of the area’s industrial past. While its vintage buildings are being converted into modern living spaces, NOTA’s residential streets are lined with charming 19th century houses like the one at 237 Merriman Street. Built in 1888, the exterior of this period house is a sunny yellow with crisp white trim. The columned front porch, a great place to spend a summer afternoon, welcomes you. Inside you notice the house’s stunning period details such as the original oak floors and restored gumwood trim found throughout the house. More original details like the wall sconces and leaded glass front windows enhance the living room, and a stained glass bay window and window seat are an added bonus. A smaller room that is perfect for an office adjoins the spacious dining room. The kitchen, large for a house of this vintage, has tall windows that make it a sunny spot for meal preparation. An original built-in cabinet, a vintage freestanding sink, and a generous-sized pantry complete the space. One of the many beautiful features of the house is the newly refinished grand staircase that leads from the foyer to the second floor. Upstairs are

four sunny and bright bedrooms each with a walk-in closet. The smallest bedroom, which may have been the nursery, adjoins the large master that overlooks the front yard. A surprise awaits you in the bathroom—the house’s original clawfoot tub! A built-in linen closet in the hall completes the second floor. The mechanics and laundry are in the full basement that has a convenient access door to the outside. The private backyard is fully fenced and lined with spring flowers peaking out from under the snow. The exterior of the two-car garage is a yellow and white that perfectly matches the house. The shops, restaurants, and galleries of Village Gate Square and the Anderson Arts Building are within walking distance. The Memorial Art Gallery and George Eastman Museum are nearby. The house is located in the Rochester City School District and is served by the NOTA Neighborhood Association. This 1,680 square foot city home is listed for $120,000 with taxes of $3,409.
