In the book “Happy City: Transforming Lives Through Urban Design,” Charles Montgomery discusses how successful cities have made their public spaces more walkable, bike-friendly, green, and ripe for social interaction: “the explosion of research into the benefits of nature suggests that green space in cities shouldn’t be considered an optional luxury,” he wrote. Instead, he said, researchers “insist it is a crucial part of a healthy human habitat.” The Visionary Square proposal for Parcel 5 offers a once-in-ageneration opportunity to transform downtown through such a space. From Larkin Square in Buffalo to Campus Maritius in Detroit, Rust Belt cities are recognizing that green urban spaces boost property values, attract innovative businesses, reduce crime, and perhaps most important, improve quality of life. Campus Maritius in Detroit was developed on an almost identical piece of land, and soon after, Compuware decided to move 4,000 jobs to the surrounding buildings. The award-winning park is now considered “the crossroads of all downtown activity.” Meanwhile, our neighbors in Buffalo recently announced a bold new green zoning plan and have built a similar park in Larkin Square, where residents now gather daily for lunch, and weekly for concerts and other events. What leaders in these cities recognize is that data demonstrate the correlation between green urban spaces and increased property value (plus 19 to 35 percent for the surrounding buildings, according to researchers

at Texas A&M), reduced crime, and an enhanced quality of life. Visionary Square would be transformative. It would be the site of festivals, farmers markets, concerts, and movie screenings. It would be a place for people to meet, interact, and exercise. It would be a central location for our growing food truck economy. It’s also the only proposal that comes with a reset button. All of the other proposals involve permanent infrastructure coming to Parcel 5, meaning once the city commits, there will be no going back. You can’t un-build a building. But Visionary Square will be developed light, quick, and cheap, with no permanent fixtures. Down the line, should the city decide to go a different direction with the property, development will still be possible. (For information about Visionary Square: thisisnotapark. com and pps.org.) On a Feedback letter urging the overturn of Citizens United:

The problem with bashing the Citizens United decision is that the legitimacy of said bashing rests on our accepting as a given the following two points: 1) That politicians accepting corporate campaign contributions will inevitably return the favor by introducing and passing legislation, or otherwise engage in activities that will financially benefit such corporations, and 2) That there is a direct correlation between the amount of money raised by a political candidate and the number of votes garnered by that candidate. While both points doubtless occur from time to time, I’ve seen no studies indicating that the cash generated by Citizens United has made these points any more likely to transpire, or has made them the rule rather than the exception. URBAN JOURNAL | BY MARY ANNA TOWLER

Trumpcare’s dead, but its philosophy lives on The Republicans’ American Health Care Act is dead, apparently. And for liberals, that’s something to celebrate, I guess. But the philosophical divide that got us here – that got us not only to the bill’s defeat but gave us the bill in the first place – is still very much alive. It’s not just a divide between the Freedom Caucus Republicans and everybody else. It’s a divide between people who don’t sympathize with the needs and viewpoints of people unlike them and people who do. The most chilling photograph I saw during the past week was the one originally tweeted out by Vice President Mike Pence, showing Pence and members of the Freedom Caucus, meeting in the White House to discuss the American Health Care Act. The Caucus was demanding changes, including dropping some of the coverage Obamacare required insurance plans to provide. Why, Caucus members argued, should people have to pay for insurance coverage they’ll never need? If some Americans want that coverage, they can pay a bit more and get it. Among the items the Caucus wanted cut: maternity care coverage. One group of Americans who would never need that coverage, of course, is men. It can’t be a coincidence that every person in the photo of the Freedom Caucus was a white man. The Caucus doesn’t publicize the names of its members, but the Pew Research Center says it’s been able to identify 36 members – only one of whom is a woman (Cynthia Loomis from Wyoming), and only one an ethnic minority (Raúl Labrador from Idaho). Also not coincidentally, I think: the Freedom Caucus has been among the most ardent forces pushing to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides vital health care for women. If we’re to judge them on their actions, the Freedom Caucus members not only don’t understand how insurance works – how larger pools of beneficiaries makes insurance affordable – but they’re also not concerned about people who aren’t like them – even wives, sisters, daughters, mothers. Personally, they can afford to be hard-hearted under the guise of fiscal conservatism, because they and their families have excellent health-care coverage, courtesy of American taxpayers. This isn’t solely a women’s issue. And the hard-heartedness isn’t limited to members of the Freedom Caucus. Congress has become mean. Small. Many of us are concerned about the partisanship in Washington, the seeming inability for Republicans and Democrats to

The hard-hearted hatred of Obamacare isn’t limited to members of the Freedom Caucus. Congress has become mean. Small.” find common ground. That will keep the country from dealing with the challenges we’re certain to face. But we could vote out of office the legislators who aren’t willing to compromise. Harder to deal with, I think, is the pettiness and lack of empathy that seems to have infected the American soul. It’s astonishing – to me, at least – that unlike most other developed nations, we don’t consider health care a right. Universal health care shouldn’t be a hard sell to Donald Trump’s supporters – or to the voters who sent the Freedom Caucus to Washington. In Sunday’s Times, Cornell economics professor Robert Frank suggested that Trump should use the AHCA’s defeat as an opportunity to start pushing for a single-payer system, “Medicare for All.” Great idea, of course. But that assumes that Trump cares enough about ordinary people to lead on this issue. Sadly, I’ve seen no indication that he does. In my column earlier this month,

bemoaning the threats to Jewish Community Centers, I concluded that the threats were part of widespread antiSemitism. Since then, Israeli authorities have arrested a 19-year-old Israeli man and charged him with some of those threats. While that arrest doesn’t mean that antiSemitism and similar hatreds isn’t flourishing, in the US and elsewhere, I drew a conclusion about those particular threats that was unfounded. That’s a violation of journalistic standards. Readers who have said I should apologize are correct. I should, and I do. rochestercitynewspaper.com

Immigrant detainments prompt rally

Protesters gathered in front of Rochester’s Federal Building last Friday to rally against recent detainments of undocumented immigrants in the area and subsequent deportation actions. The protest was planned after a group of five farm workers in Albion were detained last Tuesday, and it gained impetus Thursday night when Geneseo police pulled over a van containing two women and five children and called Border Patrol. Police said that the driver had a Guatemalan passport and that there wasn’t a driver’s license in the van, so Border Patrol was called to assist in identification and communication. One of the women and a 12-year-old boy were detained until Friday morning.

The company then teased audiences with the announcement that the road show of Miranda’s current Broadway hit, “Hamilton,” would land in Rochester in the 2018-19 season. Geva announced Monday that it will open its season with Miranda’s first success, “In the Heights.” The regional theater’s season will include nine productions as well as several special events. Geva’s Wilson Stage Series will include the world premiere of “The Agitators,” a commissioned work about the 45-year friendship between Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, and a new adaptation of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” The company will partner with the Rochester Latino Theatre Company for “In the Heights,” and with the Susan B. Anthony Museum for “The Agitators.”

School budget adds teachers

Geva Theatre Center and the Rochester Broadway Theatre League announced their 2017-18 seasons, each with a dash of Lin-Manuel Miranda. On Thursday, RBTL said its upcoming seven-show season would include Tony Award-winning musical “Fun Home,” “An American in Paris” on its first national tour, and the popular “Rent.”

Rochester schools Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams proposed a $791 million budget for the 2017-2018 school year, a nine percent increase over this year’s budget. Deane-Williams wants to add reading and special education teachers, as well as social workers. But she is still working on closing a budget gap of nearly $18 million.

Many Penfield residents want the former golf course to become permanently protected open space. FILE PHOTO DEVELOPMENT | BY JEREMY MOULE

Penfield buys time on Shadow Pines Penfield town officials will have another year to figure out what to do about the former Shadow Pines golf course. The Town Board approved a measure last week that extends a moratorium on the property’s development through March 2018; the board passed the first moratorium last spring, and it expires this month. Technically, the development freeze gives the town a window to review and revise the property’s zoning. But practically, the moratorium gives the town a chance to buy the 200-acre property from the Dolomite Group. Many residents have told the town that they want it to acquire Shadow Pines and make it permanently

protected open space. Town officials want the same thing, and they’re working toward a public referendum on the funding, if they reach an agreement with Dolomite executives. During a public hearing earlier this month, Penfield Supervisor Tony LaFountain said that he’s been negotiating with Dolomite officials and that the talks, though not complete, have been positive. Dolomite supports the town’s process and wants to work with officials, company President John Siel said during the hearing. But he also told the board that extending the moratorium will have an impact on the company, which spends about

$100,000 a year on the Shadow Pines property. That figure includes the cost of upkeep for a building on the site. A six-month moratorium, with the possibility of a six-month extension, would have been preferable, he said. Dolomite originally marketed the property for residential development, and early last year, rumors that a builder wanted to put upwards of 250 residences on the site began swirling through the town. A development that size “would change the existing character of this part of our town,” Town Board member Andy Moore said explaining his support for the moratorium.

Four more committees have to vote, so the race could be a close one. And that will probably be just the first step in the Democrats’ selection of a mayoral candidate. It’s likely that there’ll be a Democratic primary.

POLITICS | BY MARY ANNA TOWLER

Close vote likely in Dems’ mayoral pick Local Democrats will designate a candidate for Rochester mayor at a May 18 convention. And it’s looking increasingly likely that the vote will be a close one. But that will probably be just the first step in the party’s selection process. It’s highly likely that there’ll be a Democratic primary for mayor, regardless of who wins the designation at the convention. Five of the party’s 10 legislative district committees have endorsed former Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard: the 7th, 26th, and 28th in the city’s west and northwest neighborhoods and the 21st and 23rd on the city’s east side. Only the 24th LD, in the south, has endorsed Mayor Lovely Warren. Former television reporter Rachel Barnhart hasn’t won the support of any of the district committees so far. Four more committees still have to vote, however: the 27th on the west side, and the 22nd, 25th, and 29th in the center and northeast. All have traditionally been allied with Warren and her mentor, State Assemblymember David Gantt. So the Sheppard and Warren campaigns may head into the convention with nearly equal committee support. A complicating factor: not all committees are equal. Their vote is “weighted,” based on the voter

Court, and numerous suburban offices. There’s intense interest in City Council, where two of the five at-large incumbents – Carolee Conklin and Matt Haag – are retiring. Incumbents Loretta Scott, Jackie Ortiz, and Dana Miller, are seeking reelection, and at last week’s Eastside Dems meeting, they and 13 others sought support. (The winners that night: Ortiz, Scott, Miller, and new Council candidates Malik Evans, currently a Rochester School Board member, and Tom Hasman, an information security specialist who ran for Monroe County Clerk in 2008. No other committees have voted for Council yet.)

Residents can learn next week about Rochester Management’s latest proposal for its Norris Drive property, which is surrounded by Cobbs Hill Park. The plan will be discussed at a public meeting at New Life Presbyterian Church, 243 Rosedale Street, at 7 p.m. Monday, April 3. The company wants to demolish the six, one-story brick buildings, which contain 60 units of affordable housing for seniors. The revised plan calls for five new apartment buildings with 98 units: three that are two-story and two that are three-story, with a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and townhouse-style units. The current complex contains studios and one-bedroom units. The new plan comes almost a year after Rochester Management first proposed changes to the site. Mayor Lovely Warren stepped in following growing protests against the project, and asked Rochester Management to submit new plans. Since then, some residents and community members have met with Rochester Management and city officials about the proposal, says Andrew Seager, president of the Friends of Washington Grove. The company has submitted a more thorough proposal, he says. The original plan showed just two four-story buildings, leaving future development unclear. And critics said the buildings weren’t compatible with the park.

turnout in their district in the most recent gubernatorial election. Tension in this race was a given; Sheppard’s activists include the Democrats who supported former Mayor Tom Richards in the 2013 primary – and organized an unsuccessful independent bid for him after Warren won that primary. The race has already turned particularly ugly, though. Several Warren supporters have suggested that Sheppard – who, like Warren, is African American – isn’t “black enough” and, in effect, is a puppet for white Democrats. And Sheppard has benefitted from Democratic Committee rules that allow suburban residents to participate in the individual committee votes. The committees’ geographic boundaries are those of County Legislature districts, some of which include both city and suburban neighborhoods. The party’s deep division has had a serious impact on its fund-raising. That could affect its strength if it runs a candidate for county executive race two years from now, as it’s widely expected to do. At the May 18 convention, Democrats will also designate their candidates for City Council, Rochester School Board, City

A challenge on campuses: protecting speech we hate

RIT Professor Joseph Fornieri: What’s important is whether individuals with different views are able to engage one another in civil conversations. PHOTO BY KEVIN FULLER

a professor at New York Law School, will give a lecture on Tuesday, April 4. And Alan Kors, history professor at the University of Pennsylvania, will speak on Wednesday, April 5. Both lectures are at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Fornieri is among a number of academics who are deeply concerned that college campuses are becoming so intolerant of free speech that their core mission – being marketplaces of ideas – is getting lost. A major criticism of higher education, in addition to its rising cost, is that most institutions and their faculties are essentially provinces of the liberal elite. And they’re fostering a kind of bubble of infantilized culture, critics say. A heightened intolerance of conservative views, a tendency to label all offensive speech as “hate” speech, is fueling that perception, Fornieri says. He cites the recent protests at the University of California, Berkeley, and Middlebury College, two institutions that are widely viewed as among the country’s most liberal. At the latter, social scientist Charles Murray, author of “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010” and co-author of an earlier controversial look at society called “The Bell Curve,” was confronted by a hostile mob as he was leaving a debate. Murray’s fellow panelist, Allison Stanger, a liberal Middlebury political science professor, ended up in a neck brace after being grabbed by someone at the event. Stanger later wrote a stinging rebuke of Middlebury students’ violent response to what was nothing more than a panel discussion. A staunch liberal, Stanger wrote in the New York Times that she ended up with a concussion “for having the audacity to engage” with a conservative scholar. RIT was faced with a similar problem

Shortly after the 2016 election, a group unhappy with the presidential election results used Facebook to promote a “Not My America” protest on the University of Rochester campus. That led Ted Pawlicki, a UR professor, to post a derisive comment: he’d pay for the protesters’ bus fare to Canada as long as they promised not to return. The comment lit up social media and put a national spotlight on the UR. Pawlicki continued to teach at the UR, but he apologized and resigned as director of the university’s undergraduate computer-science program within days of posting his comment. It was reported at the time that Pawlicki said he made the comment as “a joke.” But judging from remarks on social media and elsewhere, many people thought his post was offensive. Controversial incidents involving speech aren’t new, nor are they limited to the UR, locally. In 2015, Colgate Rochester Crozer 6 CITY

MARCH 29 - APRIL 4, 2017

Divinity School rescinded a speaking invitation to the Rev. Graylan Hagler, a vocal advocate of Palestinian rights. Hagler was receiving death threats, and CRCDS officials said they didn’t have the resources to provide security for the event. Nonetheless, the incident put the school in a difficult situation. Freedom of speech has become a contentious issue on college campuses across the country, says Joseph Fornieri, political science professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and director of the university’s Center for Statesmanship, Law, and Liberty. The Center is holding a symposium this week that focuses on freedom of speech on college campuses. Fornieri, whose own political views lean to the left, says the Center chose the topic partly because of its timeliness. But he also wants RIT to lead in this discussion rather than be the scene of an incident, he says. Nadine Strossen, former president of the American Civil Liberties Union and

when George Tenet, the former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, was asked to speak at a graduation ceremony about 10 years ago, says Fornieri. While some students and faculty members – opposed to the US invasion of Iraq – weren’t happy with the decision to invite Tenet, former RIT President Al Simone didn’t rescind the invitation. “I think Simone handled it perfectly,” Fornieri says. “He provided an opportunity for expressing dissent without disrupting the ceremony.” RIT, like many schools, has a wide range of student groups and organizations, says Fornieri. “You have Democrats, libertarians, Republicans – really, we have everyone from socialists to fans of Ayn Rand,” he says. But that’s not really the issue. What’s important is whether individuals with different views are able to engage one another in civil conversations, he says. “It’s not an echo chamber,” he says. “You don’t want one person to control the debate.”

The sentiments of UR sophomore Chris Hodgman, a member of the university’s College Republicans group, may typify those of conservative students at many colleges. “The student body is very liberal, and so is most of the faculty,” Hodgman says. Though he says doesn’t feel restricted in what he says on campus, he also says: “I don’t really talk too much about politics. I know I would mostly be in the minority.” “I don’t worry about people knowing my views,” says Hodgman, who says he was once called a Nazi after sharing some of his libertarian views. “I worry about people misrepresenting my views.” The climate on college campuses

concerning free speech isn’t just worrisome, says RIT’s guest lecturer Nadine Strossen; it’s putting the bedrock of a free society at risk. The liberal constitutional law scholar has written two provocative books: “Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex, and the Fight for Women’s Rights” and “Speaking of Race, Speaking of Sex: Hate Speech, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties.” Strossen says she is particularly concerned with how the Title IX federal law is being misinterpreted by college administrators. The law basically says that in any education program receiving federal funds, no one can be discriminated against based on gender. While the law’s intent is good, it’s also having a chilling effect on free speech, she said in a recent telephone interview. For instance, if a male professor says to a female student, sleep with me or you’re not going to receive a good grade, that’s an example of sexual harassment. But the law is being construed in some campus policies to mean “any action that makes anyone feel uncomfortable,” Strossen said, which could be almost anything. This is causing many professors to self-censor what they say and write out of fear of being fired, she said. “Current campus policies are analogous to those old anti-porn laws, because they violate free speech and other fundamental rights,” Strossen said. The irony is that this doesn’t strengthen women’s rights, she said; it undermines them. Academics haven’t done a good job of explaining the importance of freedom of speech, Strossen said, and they’re partly to blame for what some critics on the right describe as the creation of the “snowflake” culture. She agrees that she, like many people, finds racist, sexist, and homophobic speech horrid. But she draws a line when individuals look to government to repress offensive speech. “There is a false assumption that if you suppress offensive speech it makes us safer,” Strossen said. “But more harm is done than good by censorship.”

Dining Palozzi ended a year-long battle with cancer on Saturday, March 11. He was 68. CITY spoke with a few of those that knew Java Joe to get a small glimpse of who he was and how he influenced Rochester. If you knew Palozzi, add your own memories of to the comments below this article online at rochestercitynewspaper.com. Mike Calabrese, co-owner of Good Luck,

Java Joe Palozzi, a Rochester icon, died on March 11 after a battle with cancer. PROVIDED PHOTO

Remembering Java Joe [ TRIBUTE ] BY KATIE LIBBY

There was a phrase heard again and again while interviewing those that knew Joe Palozzi, endearingly known as Java Joe: “That was just Java.” Whether people were describing how he golfed barefoot — something he picked up when he lived in Hawaii — or how when he would deliver coffee to restaurants that he loved, he’d walk into the cooler, grab whatever he wanted cooked for him, be it lobster, steak, you name it, and still charge you for the coffee.

He had a passion for coffee; Palozzi opened his first coffee shop in the 1970’s, spent time in Hawaii as a coffee farmer in the 1980’s, and opened Java’s on Gibbs in 1992. He spent a lot of his time at Java’s at the Market, doing what he loved best: roasting. When people talk about third wave coffee, about wanting a high quality product as well as knowing where the coffee comes from and fair trade, Java Joe was talking about all this decades ago. Palozzi was a connoisseur of not just coffee, but of food, wine, and life.

took over Java’s on Gibbs in 1997. He ran the retail end, and Palozzi continued to roast the coffee. At Java’s at the Market, you could find Palozzi roasting or hanging out with local customers and restaurateurs. “He used to say, ‘I know two things: I know coffee, and I know people,’” Calabrese says. “He had a real good sense of reading people.” Palozzi would take Calabrese with him on trips to explore coffee plantations in Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and other coffee-producing countries. “His life was so rich in adventures; in trying things and doing things,” Calabrese says. “Those memories of being on coffee plantations are so beautiful and personal to me; I will never forget.” A common thread that runs through the conversations about Java Joe is that he lived life like every day was the last. “He showed me what a true free spirit was,” Calabrese says, “not to worry about things and really just go for it. He never worried about if something was going to be super successful; he wanted to do something and try it. He went for it. Everything was successful because he tried it.” Chuck Cerankosky worked at Java’s on Gibbs Street from 1999 to 2012. He currently co-owns Good Luck, is the owner of Cure, and will soon open Radio Social. Cerankosky remembers Palozzi as being at the forefront of the current trends in not just coffee culture, but also in dining and cocktail cultures. “Back in the 90’s,” Cerankosky says, “Joe had these sweatshirts made that said, ‘Java Joe’s Coffee Experience,’ and at the time I’m 18 years old and am like, ‘Coffee experience? What is that? It’s coffee, dude. Coffee is coffee.’ But what Java knew back then, when he started roasting in the 1970’s, he knew that coffee had this transcendental quality when you appreciate it as an ingredient instead of as a commodity. “And now you look around you, and there are all of these third wave coffee shops, where they’re talking about tasting notes, etc. Java Joe taught us how to eat and drink, and not only about coffee. He taught me that there is so much deliciousness in the world; there’s so much food in life. And there was so much life in him.”

Tony Colon, owner of Fuego Coffee

Roasters, started working in 2006 at Java’s on Gibbs as a barista. He didn’t have much interaction with Palozzi until he started managing Java’s and doing deliveries at the market. That’s when they started talking about roasting, and Colon would watch him do it. Colon developed a passion for it, and he and his wife would go on to open Fuego Coffee Roasters. “We had the same idea about coffee,” Colon says, “and how we wanted to source coffee; work specifically with farmers. Really looking for high quality coffee and have it be traceable.” In terms of Palozzi’s influence on the coffee scene in Rochester, Colon believes that he had an influence on anyone that has been a roaster here. “I think it’s important for people to know that if we did not have the roots that we had, there would be no Fuego. There would be no Fuego Coffee Roasters without Java Joe.” There is a photo of Palozzi that has hung for years on the wall next to the espresso machine at Osteria Rocco. “I know there were all these new, hip, coffee things going on, but I always stuck with Joe,” says Rocco owner Mark Cupolo. Cupolo was working at Max at Eastman Place when he met Palozzi and would go hang out at Java’s at the Market. “It was a good place to sit around and hang,” he says. “You could sit over there, kill time in his shop, and you didn’t have to say much; just enjoy the peace and quiet.” Cupolo says he found it a compliment when Palozzi would order Rocco’s linguini with clams — Java Joe was particular about the food and restaurants that he liked. “They talk about his free spirit,” Cupolo says. “It seemed like he was always in control of his own work, and I always liked that.” Tony Gullace, owner of Max Rochester, describes Java Joe as “the ultimate foodie.” When Gullace ran the Water Street Grill, Palozzi would come in every Wednesday to make gnocchi with him. Palozzi would then walk around the dining room, peddling the gnocchi special to unsuspecting diners. “He would say, ‘Have you had the gnocchi? They’re so light you need a butterfly net to catch them,” Gullace recalls. Gullace and Palozzi stayed close when Gullace left Water Street Grill to open Max. “He had such a passion for coffee,” Gaullace says. “It was all about the bean and the roasting, and he had all the answers. He had a wanderlust for life; I was jealous that anyone could be that carefree.” rochestercitynewspaper.com

Branan an outsider; a dissident who doesn’t fit. Well, they’re wrong: he fits like an old pair of boots. He hides in the shadows and sings to them. He sings startlingly astute songs from the brim of your hat. His guitar playing is tremendous and jaw dropping as it shifts gears between a slash ‘n’ strum to a rollicking finger-picked style that is as pleasantly confusing, intricate, and beautiful as lace. But it’s the words that’ll get you. I mean, Branan wrote the line “The ashtray smoked my last cigarette.” Dig. — BY FRANK DE BLASE

Come To Grief SATURDAY, APRIL 1 BUG JAR, 219 MONROE AVENUE 8 P.M. | $10-$13 | BUGJAR.COM; FACEBOOK.COM/EXTREMESLUDGE [ SLUDGE METAL ] Boston’s sludge pioneers Grief had somewhat

of a turbulent history. With a clutch of 7-inches and a few highly acclaimed records under its belt — including 1994’s essential “Come to Grief” — the band disbanded in 2001, citing a “hostile environment for doom metal bands.” Now, founding guitarist and vocalist Terry Savastano has revitalized Grief in a huge way: operating under the new moniker Come To Grief and playing a revue of sorts of early Grief material. With a new record on the way and a slew of shows on the horizon, there seems to be some momentum for Grief’s particular brand of nihilistic doomsaying. “Transitions” Criss Cross Records davidgilmore.net

Soul Passenger . Record

He has served as a sideman with Wayne Shorter, Steve Coleman, Meshell Ndegeocello, and others, but on his fifth album, “Transitions,” guitarist David Gilmore amply displays his prowess as a leader. The record, a tribute to recently departed jazz giants, showcases Gilmore’s originality and intelligence in terms of complex arrangements, unusual meters, and engaging solos. The album’s two original tunes leave no doubt about his ability to weave together gorgeous melodic lines over intriguing chord structures, but most of the cuts explore the compositions of others. Gilmore’s core band includes Mark Shim on saxophone; Victor Gould, piano; Carlo DeRosa, bass; and E.J. Strickland, drums. All of them are superb ensemble players who never fail to soar when they get a chance to stretch out. Tributes include a spritely take on Victor Bailey’s “Kid Logic,” featuring brilliant guitar work by Gilmore. Guest harmonica player Grégoire Maret plays a wonderful solo on the great Toots Thielemans classic “Bluesette,” while another guest, Bill Ware, dazzles on vibraphone on Bobby Hutcherson’s “Farralone.” — BY RON NETSKY

After recording hundreds of albums with others, the brothers have finally released their first album together. When they take the stage at Lovin’ Cup, Tony will play upright bass and cello while Pete will command the piano and organ. The brothers will be joined by saxophonist and flautist Erik Lawrence, a Levon Helm sideman, and drummer Jeff Siegel, who has worked with Sir Roland Hanna and Kenny Burrell. $20 advance; $25 day of show. — BY RON NETSKY

The first sign of something unusual about trumpeter and keyboard player Chris Rogers’s wonderful new album, “Voyage Home,” is the masterful saxophone sound of Michael Brecker, who died in 2007. With an overall funky, Afro-Cuban feel, this CD is as fresh as yesterday, but the credits say it was recorded in 2001. It’s not a reissue; it was a long time in the making. And it’s worth the wait. The son of legendary trombonist Barry Rogers, Chris Rogers was a trumpet prodigy who began playing with Gerry Mulligan at 19. Over his career, he’s played with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Chaka Khan. Aside from Brecker the album boasts Ted Nash and Roger Rosenberg on saxophones; Art Baron, trombone; Steve Khan, guitar; Xavier Davis and Mark Falchook, keyboards; Jay Anderson, bass; Steve Johns, drums; and Willie Martinez, percussion. A trombone interlude by Rogers’ late father begins one tune. Many of the solos are phenomenal, but they share the spotlight with Rogers’ composing and arranging skills. There’s no need to wonder if this album will withstand the test of time; it already has. — BY RON NETSKY

Music “You would be perfect for my friend’s band, Flogging Molly. Check them out.” And I did. It was a perfect fit when I joined the band. The band was playing at Molly Malone’s every Monday; they weren’t touring and didn’t have a record out. When I joined we took off to do a West Coast tour. All of my dreams came true. The first couple of years of touring were really rough: sleeping on floors and not making any money and that kind of thing. What has contributed to the band’s success?

The chemistry of the band, the love of the music we have, and the work ethic. We’ve worked really hard, especially in the beginning, touring almost 275 nights a year or more and going all over the world. We really paid our dues, and we love what we do and we love our fans. It’s a second family for us; I think that’s a big part of it. Can you tell us about Flogging Molly’s new album?

Flogging Molly will release its sixth studio album, “Life is Good,” on June 2. In the meantime, the band is playing the Dome in Henrietta on Saturday.

Beyond the tunes, success in the music industry often hinges on an excellent live show. And no band has toured as hard or has consistently poured its heart out onstage as Flogging Molly. What began in 1997 as a Los Angeles bar band has become an IrishAmerican cultural institution. Flogging Molly broke out with its debut album, “Alive Behind the Green Door,” which captured a night at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub, and has followed it up with a string of increasingly successful studio records, including “Drunken Lullabies,” “Within a Mile of Home,” and “Float.” The albums and concerts — crammed with exuberance — deliver a rich diversity of traditional Irish music and Celtic punk that has earned the 12 CITY MARCH 29-APRIL 4 , 2017

band acclaim the world over. The band’s longevity is a testament to its perseverance; it has not only beaten the odds for 20 years but has managed to survive and thrive. “Life is Good,” Flogging Molly’s sixth studio album and its first since 2011’s “Speed of Darkness,” will be released June 2. Flogging Molly will be in Rochester to perform at the Dome on Saturday, April 1, so CITY Newspaper got a few words out of guitarist Dennis Casey — an Irondequoit native, in fact. An edited version of that interview follows.

me up to a lot of music. Rochester also taught me a work ethic, and when I moved to LA, that work ethic was very handy and helped out a lot.

CITY: How has being from Rochester affected your music? Dennis Casey: I learned a lot in Rochester.

Did you ever have a plan B?

I was into playing original music, but that was hard to do in Rochester at the time. I got a job at the House of Guitars, and I was exposed to a lot of different kinds of music. The House of Guitars was the perfect place, and I spent all my money on new records. I would work in the back with Greg [Prevost] of The Chesterfield Kings and he had a huge wealth of knowledge that opened

It’s completely done; we’re working on the artwork now. On this next tour we’ll preview a couple of new songs. We recorded the album in Ireland, which was really cool, and at a place called Grouse Lodge. It was a great experience.

You left town with singer-songwriter Joe Brucato in the 90’s to form a band in Los Angeles.

Actually in 1990, and we didn’t leave together; he went out there first. Joe’s father, Chuck, had a music connection in LA, and Joe stopped in Las Vegas and then I went out. We really gave it many years — struggling and trying to make things happen.

No. I painted houses when I was in Rochester and learned how to do that, but I didn’t want to do it for a living. When I went to LA, there was no fallback plan. It was either do or die. How did you hook up with Flogging Molly?

I was into playing with a lot of different people. This one project I was playing in was at a venue in LA, and one of the people in the audience was a friend of Dave [King], our lead singer. She came up to me and said,

Grouse Lodge Studios is in the middle of Ireland. It’s very secluded; surrounded by farms. We could focus on playing music all day and night. There is a pub at the studio where we would end the day by having pints of beer and playing music and talking about what we’d do the next day. There were many animals, too. You’d walk out the door and a row of ducks would cross your path. While we were recording you’d see a herd of cows walk by the window. We had a few bonfires as well. I read somewhere that you have a Local 85 union tattoo; can you talk about that?

My father was a union carpenter. Local 85 is a carpenter’s union in Rochester. My father, all my uncles, and my cousins worked as carpenters in Local 85. I support unions; it’s a great way for workers to be represented. I don’t want to get too much into a soapbox political thing but it’s taken care of my family for generations. I wear it proudly.

The formidable shadows of The Mars Volta and Circa Survive loom large over Stolas. Still, while the Las Vegas-based band may wear its influences on its sleeve, the music never sounds overburdened by the inspiration each member brings to the table. Its latest, self-titled LP is lush with intricate guitar ambiance, soaring vocals, and balancing act drumming from bandleader Carlo Marquez. Tracks like “Bellwether” and “Anecdoche” blend layer after layer of breathtaking percussion with the occasional wailing guitar solo peppered in for good measure. CLASSICAL | PUBLICK MUSICK WITH BRIAN SHAW

During the baroque era, the trumpet was at the top of the instrumental tree. It was a popular instrument on the battlefield, and after the development of a more refined style of playing in the 1600’s, it caught on in drawing rooms and concert halls. Contemporary trumpeters will attest that much of the trumpet writing of J.S. Bach, Telemann, and Handel is very, very difficult. When performed by the right trumpeter, though, it’s also very exciting — for example, when performed by Brian Shaw, who is regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the baroque trumpet. Shaw joins Publick Musick this weekend for “The Virtuoso Trumpet” as the soloist in works by Biber, Corbett, and Telemann. He’ll get a breather during performances of several baroque chamber pieces for strings alone. You’ll have two chances to hear this concert: on Friday, March 31, 7:30 p.m., at Pittsford’s St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (28 Lincoln Avenue); and on Saturday, April 1, 8 p.m., at Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word (597 East Avenue). $20 general; student and low income tickets, $10; children 17 and under, free. 244-5835; publickmusick.org. — BY DAVID RAYMOND

Revel in the details: Consumer hell John Kastner’s “Filthy Animal’s Plasticrap” TO CONTACT KASTNER, EMAIL JKASTNER@WEEBLAX-UZZL.COM [ REVIEW ] BY REBECCA RAFFERTY

Rochester-based illustrator John Kastner’s work is rooted in a deep concern with the environment. He’s become known for the social criticism he injects into his chaotic cartoon realms in gouache on matte board. His newest work, “Filthy Animal’s Plasticrap,” incorporates plastic trash he’s picked up on walks to and from work. And leading up to the People’s Climate March and Earth Day, he’s looking for a permanent home for the piece. Many of Kastner’s chaotic illustrations are reminiscent of the hellish right panel of Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights” — a scene of the world after it’s gone to shit. “Filthy Animal’s Plasticrap” depicts a nightmarish shopping center with blaring advertisements and depraved consumer zombies eager to run one another over. It’s at once action-packed and bereft of life. It’s rife with Kastner’s acerbic wit, in clever signage and word-bubbles emitting from the characters. Shoved off to one side, an animal “refuge” is ever-threatened by violently encroaching development. Ringing the work is a garland of plastic bags and Christmas lights, with demonic plastic angels dropping in from above and a sea of toy fish trapped in plastic

nets below. Along the bottom, a line of plastic straws springs oily leaks, and is labeled “The Absolutely Guaranteed We Promise Never Leak (oops sorry) Pipeline.” You could spend all day unpacking everything that’s going on, with sick, sad laughter erupting from your bewildermentcracked face. As talented as Kastner is, the work is deliberately hideous; it’s garish and off-putting. And the scene is only the slightest exaggeration of reality. In contrast with the unabashed condemnation in his work, Kastner’s demeanor is one of calm reasoning. Now that he has your attention, he wants a discussion: he says the work is about the environmental and psychological effects of our consumerist society. The genesis of the piece happened nearly two years ago, when he began picking up interesting bits of plastic off the street. As a member of the executive committee of the Rochester Regional Sierra Club chapter and one of the founders of the committee to save Seneca Park, Kastner has participated in many spring clean-ups, and is keenly aware of the environmental impact of plastic. The substance doesn’t biodegrade. “It’s ground into the soil, blown into trees, and flushed into streams, rivers, and ultimately, the oceans,” Kastner says. “There it fragments into tiny pieces and is eaten by marine life that mistake it for food.” There are five continent-sized mats of floating trash in oceans around the world. But even there, Kastner says, it doesn’t end: the plastic kills the animals that eat it, and returns to the sea. The dead fish and whales

cease to produce the waste that feed the phytoplankton, which are the base of the oceanic food chain and the producers of half of the oxygen we breathe. Additionally, carbon pollution from creating plastic contributes to the acidification and warming of the oceans, creating an even more hostile environment for these tiny creatures. To date, 40 percent of the phytoplankton in the oceans has been lost. While we’re increasingly aware of the burden that plastic places on the planet, “nobody ever asked the question that occurred to me, which is ‘What causes all of this trash?’” Kastner says. “It’s not so much the careless hand that drops the plastic on the ground as it is the massive machine that relentlessly produces, distributes, and markets this crap to waves of carefully groomed and seduced consumers.” Throughout the work Kastner has illustrated cows, which he says represent another kind of mindless, detrimental consumption: our insatiable lust for meat and dairy products. Kastner’s work is a criticism of the emptiness of the society that we live in, he says. “We are so geared toward pointless consumption, which results in such suffering on many levels.” We have ourselves fairly convinced by now that we’re separate from nature, but our actions have mega impacts on the global ecosystem, and the effects are coming back at us. Our habits “have created a world vastly different than one in which we evolved, yet we remain the same animal with the same needs that often go unfulfilled by this new world we inhabit,” he says. He describes our polluted world as noisy and crowded, yet we also experience heightened alienation from nature and one another. Kastner says that there is interconnectivity between environmental issues and various social problems. “The issues that are going to affect everybody across the board are access to clean food and water,” he says. “Water especially. It cuts across all social and economic barriers; it’s the bottom line. Who among us wants to tell future generations that it was too hard and that they were not worth the effort?” He has found a temporary home for the piece in a private residence, but he’s looking for a permanent place for it to land. He’s offering it for free, with the stipulation that the public will have access to viewing the work. Kastner will attend the second Great People’s Climate March that will take place in Washington, D.C., on April 29. For more information, visit peoplesclimate.org or rochesterclimateaction.org

GAMING | SIMCON Rochester is arguably one of the nerdiest cities in New York State. University of Rochester’s annual gaming convention, SIMCON — the longest-running tabletop gaming convention in New York — is a standing achievement of Rochester’s nerdom. SIMCON is specifically geared toward tabletop gaming: board gaming, war gaming, role-playing, collectible card gaming, and a whole lot more. This year marks its 39th convention, appropriately titled “Rogue Thirty-Nine: A SIMCON Story.” It’s completely student-run by University of Rochester Simulation Gaming Association (URSGA), which is astonishing when considering how long it has been going. The convention will feature local vendors, special guests, and events that showcase specific games, inviting attendees to join in or just spectate. Events will occur for the entirety of the weekend at different times through the day. SIMCON will take place Friday, March 31, through Sunday, April 2, in the Wilson Commons on the UR River Campus. Friday, 3 p.m. to 12 a.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A single day is $10, and a weekend pass is $15. An installation full of tubes, resonators, tiny loudspeakers, and exciters that twist, swing, and turn will fill the Memorial Art Gallery’s ballroom, and people can move freely through the project and explore the sounds. Now in its third year, the Fast Forward Film Festival has expanded to include 17 entries among its official selections. The films, all created by locals, and each clocking in at five minutes or less, include a balanced mix of independent documentaries and animated shorts. The festival continues to focus on environmentally conscious films. However, in comparison with last year’s offerings, the 2017 selections are overall more uplifting,

choosing to tell stories of human problemsolving and engagement in the face of increasing environmental challenges. The juried competition includes 14 short films in the adult category and three works in the youth category. Opening night screenings will take place at The Little Theatre on Friday, March 31, and additional screenings, a gala reception, and a subsequent award ceremony will be held at the George Eastman Museum and Dryden Theatre on Saturday, April 1. In a preview of what to expect at the 2017 Fast Forward Film Festival, below are five highlights from the adult category as well all the three youth category entries. For more information, including the full list of official film sections, go to fastforwardroc.org or call the festival office at 340-7456.

Mary Moore’s “The Decay” reveals a dystopian future in the year 2087, in which an elderly woman reminisces to her granddaughter (played by the filmmaker) about how life was during “The Green Age” and how it went wrong. and an equally strong message about the power of being proactive. “Life Through My Eyes” is a film essay with a simple yet inspiring message of hope. Codirectors Juleyka Roche and Tylor Ngourn point to the beauty of nature as a metaphor for human strength and resiliency, and in the process, make a compelling case for the inextricable connection between humanity and the environment. In “Worm Farms,” filmmakers Caleb Holfoth and Colin Ransom visit the Thornell Road School, where a group of students, called the Thornell Service Stars, have built worm farms. This short also doubles as an instructional video about how to build your own worm farm.

The artwork is effusive and brilliant, but the voice-over is comparatively dull and self-serious and reduces the narrative to a forgettable museum audio guide. “Babies in the Woods” by Erica Barnabas shows audiences nascent trees growing in a Genesee Land Trust preserve, planted there to prevent the destruction of the tree population by the emerald ash borer. Those trees also provide migrating birds an important place to rest and eat, and the film ends with suggestions for what specific species of trees are ideal to plant with traveling birds in mind.

Film Previews

Brian Larson’s decidedly bittersweet “Love Song of the Drone” is essentially an animated

music video with an indie folk soundtrack provided by Sam Comfort. While drawing attention to the importance of bee populations in general, the film focuses on the oft-overlooked yet vital role that drones play in the propagation of bees and the success of their hives. Comfort sums it all up with a charming lyric: “If you want some honey-home, just call your honey home / Life is but a dream, as sweet as it seems.” A winner of last year’s festival, filmmaker Alex Freeman returns with “Pickers,” a concise yet informative peek into the work of Flower City Pickers. Founded by Khoury Humphrey, the volunteer organization collects unused produce and other items from vendors at the Rochester Public Market and then distributes that food to homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other groups or individuals in need. The short documentary also features top-flight, engrossing cinematography from Freeman and an intriguing score from The Moho Collective. “RIT Beekeepers Club” tells the story of a local fledgling bee preservation outfit, made up of Rochester Institute of Technology students. Oscar Estrada’s well-edited film details the benefits, obstacles, and goals of fostering a sustained bee community at RIT, as seen from the perspective of the club’s president Austin Quinlan. Editor’s note: CITY film critic Adam Lubitow was one of the Fast Forward Film Festival jurors. He did not participate in the initiation or execution of this article.

State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. Fun [ NEWS OF THE WEIRD ] BY CHUCK SHEPHERD

Location, Location, Location

A highlight of the recent upmarket surge in Brooklyn, N.Y., as a residential and retail favorite, was the asking price for an ordinary parking space in the garage at 845 Union Street in the Park Slope neighborhood: $300,000 (also carrying a $240-a-month condominium fee and $50 monthly taxes). That’s similar to the price of actual one-bedroom apartments in less ritzy Brooklyn neighborhoods like Gravesend (a few miles away).

Compelling Explanations

Saginaw, Michigan, defense lawyer Ed Czuprynski had beaten a felony DUI arrest in December, but was sentenced to probation on a lesser charge in the incident, and among his restrictions was a prohibition on drinking alcohol — which Czuprynski acknowledged in March that he has since violated at least twice. However, at that hearing (which could have meant jail time for the violations), Czuprynski used the opportunity to beg the judge to remove the restriction altogether, arguing that he can’t be “effective” as a lawyer unless he is able to have a drink now and then. (At press time, the judge was still undecided.)

Fine Points of the Law

Residents in southern Humboldt County, California, will vote in May on a proposed property tax increase to fund a community hospital in Garberville to serve a web of small towns in the scenic, sparsely populated region, and thanks

to a county judge’s March ruling, the issue will be explained more colorfully. Opponent Scotty McClure was initially rebuffed by the registrar when he tried to distribute, as taxpayer-funded “special elections material,” contempt for “Measure W” by including the phrase “(insert fart smell here)” in the description. The registrar decried the damage to election “integrity” by such “vulgarity,” but Judge Timothy Cissna said state law gives him jurisdiction only over “false” or “misleading” electioneering language.

Can’t Possibly Be True

News of the Weird has written several times (as technology progressed) about Matt McMullen’s “RealDoll” franchise — the San Marcos, California, engineer’s richly detailed flexible silicone mannequins that currently sell for $5,500 and up (more with premium custom features). Even before the recent success of the very humanish, artificially intelligent (AI) android “hosts” on TV’s “Westworld,” McMullen revealed that his first AI doll, “Harmony,” will soon be available with a choice of 12 “personalities,” including “intellectualism” and “wit,” to mimic an emotional bond to add to the sexual. A recent University of London conference previewed a near future when fake women routinely provide uncomplicated relationships for lonely (or disturbed) men. (Recently, in Barcelona, Spain, a brothel opened offering four “realdolls” “disinfected after each customer” — though still recommending condoms.)

[ LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION ON PAGE 24 ]

[ LOVESCOPE ] BY EUGENIA LAST ARIES (March 21-April 19): Relationship opportunities are plentiful. Someone you connect with mentally, physically and emotionally will want to move forward as quickly as you do. Make future plans to complete any past commitments that might stand in the way of new beginnings. Open your heart and share your desires. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Take a different approach when it comes to love. Don’t be afraid to add a little playful persuasion in your pursuit of everlasting love. Be mysterious about who you are but open regarding your desires and preferences. Add a little temptation and teasing to the mix, and enjoy the ride.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Don’t limit romantic possibilities due to beliefs, unreasonable standards or class. Look deeper, and judge anyone who interests you based on how you mesh intellectually, emotionally and physically. Give love a chance by taking an interest in what makes others tick. Someone you get to know will surprise you. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Don’t get sucked into an emotional encounter with someone who is overtly overbearing or indulgent. Opt for someone who has more depth and less bravado. If you have to go out of your way to be noticed by someone, it probably isn’t the right someone for you.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Getting involved with someone who enjoys the same hobbies, pastimes and entertainment will lead to greater joy and happiness than being with someone who reminds you of work 24/7. Work hard and play hard, but don’t integrate the two, or you may live to regret the outcome. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Sign up for a class or an event that sparks your interest or has something to do with a subject you have studied or entertained pursuing, and you will encounter someone who makes your heart skip a beat. Travel, online dating services or a meet-andgreet event is favored.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Your optimistic attitude will invite plenty of personal offers that interest you. Take your time and consider who and what seems most inviting. Your willingness to share and strive for equality with anyone you go out with will ensure that you get a second date if you want it. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your seductive way of flirting will capture someone’s attention. Love at first sight is apparent, and as relationships go, this one will move rapidly. It’s OK to get caught up in the moment, as your intuition will not steer you in the wrong direction.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You’ll have plenty of offers, but when it comes to making up your mind, it won’t be so easy. Don’t miss out on being with someone you know fits into your lifestyle easily for someone who sparks your interest but also raises doubt and uncertainty. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Walk away from anyone expecting you to pay for him or her or who shows signs of excessiveness. Anyone expecting too much or looking for a free ride should not be considered, no matter how good looking he or she might be. Protect your money, your possessions and your reputation.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): If you want to be with someone, speak up. Take the position of the pursuer, and let your intelligence, sophistication, and charm persuade the person you want to explore life with to stand by your side. If you long for someone from your past, the timing is right to reunite. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don’t wait for love to find you; take the initiative. If you show interest in someone who catches your attention, the response you get will help you make a quick assessment before you decide to make a date or move on to see if anyone else tempts you.

Gumwood Galore in Homestead Heights

21 Lawndale Terrace In the cold and snowy days of late March, a house just south of the Irondequoit border shines brightly while sunlight bounces off gumwood from every angle and in almost every room. Built in 1920, 21 Lawndale Terrace in Homestead Heights is a charming combination of extensive woodwork, sunlit rooms, affordable heating, and lovely 1920s period detail. Coming in from the street, be sure to check out the intricate arched stained glass window insert on the outside door. This arch motif is repeated twice more in the downstairs of the house. Just inside the door, notice the foyer’s original decorative hexagonal tile with its colorful triple striped border—another example of the house’s arts and craftsmanship. It is only fitting that the foyer be the visitor’s first glimpse of the rich, thick gumwood doors that can be found throughout the house with their original glass knobs. These doors not only provide entrance but also aid in heating efficiency as they shut off any cold air from the outside. Glancing to the right and entering the living room, notice the many colors in this room—from the reds of the original brick gas fireplace with its ceramic inlay, to the buttery hardwood floor, to the ceiling’s reddish brown gumwood trim. An eastern facing heated sleeping porch/den with gumwood trimmed pocket windows; dining room with wide gumwood border and original hardwood floor; and kitchen with its arched 1920s breakfast nook complete the downstairs.

32 CITY MARCH 29 - APRIL 4, 2017

With three bedrooms, a heated west-facing sleeping porch, and tiled bathroom, the upstairs of 21 Lawndale also exhibits the many colors and textures of woodwork that are found in the rooms below. The toasty tones of each bedroom’s gumwood trim and doors perfectly echo the luxury of forced air heat. In the hallway, a large linen closet gleams with its striking mahogany-colored hues. Raised garden beds in the fenced backyard herald further possibilities for decorative color. Located within walking distance of the Thomas P. Ryan Jr. Community Center, Sully Branch Library, Audubon School No. 33 complex, Lawndale Terrace is in a tree-lined enclave of streets where children play basketball outside and parents pull their children in little red wagons. Neighbors pride themselves on the fact that community advocate and former mayor, Thomas P. Ryan Jr., resided on central Rocket Street for many years. The Homestead Heights neighborhood’s pride in its history can also be found in the continued flourishing of longtime businesses, such as Savoia Pastry Shoppe and Fioravanti Florist. Within easy driving distance of I-590 and at 1,468 square feet, 21 Lawndale Terrace is listed at the new price of $79,900 by Tara Morgan of RealtyUSA, 585-329-7809. by Janet Collinge Janet is a longtime city resident and vice president of the Neighborhood of the Arts Neighborhood Association.
