Our City Council endorsements

CITY did its usual due diligence in examining a wide crowd of City Council candidates. Then you erred in reaching a dramatic conclusion: endorsing three strong new candidates and praising but omitting two great veterans of Rochester life. The first omission, Malik Evans, has been a Rochester leader since he was a teenager at Wilson Magnet High School. His school board colleagues chose him as president for an unprecedented three consecutive terms: tough duty on an often fractious board with superintendents of different talents and personal agendas. Still young, Evans would be the only parent of school-aged children on the Council. No wonder his platform emphasizes coordinating Council programs with the needs of our youth. As a banker, he is also strong on small business issues, his specialty at ESL. Likewise, Dana Miller has been a low-key community leader for decades – from Jefferson/Madison High School to the 19th Ward to business to the Community Foundation. I recall his sage work in negotiating the closing of the old Arnett YMCA, assuring that an unoccupied building would not become a vacant eyesore. For 18 years now, six families have lived in the homes built on that property. He also helped facilitate a long-term financial commitment to the 19th Ward Association at the Community Foundation. He is usually behind the scenes when good things are happening. So, yes: Mitch Gruber, Mary Lupien, and Matt Juda are strong new voices, and Jackie Ortiz and Loretta Scott are great sitting Council people. A wise, measured stance for CITY would have been to cite these top seven candidates and encourage Democrats to choose carefully from among them. JIM KRAUS

I usually agree with and appreciate your endorsements for elected office, but I can’t fathom your failure to endorse Malik Evans for Rochester City Council. I am not involved in his campaign except to have supported it with a modest financial gift, but I have followed his career since he was a teenager. Years ago, while he was in high school, I brought him in as a speaker to the Rochester Grantmakers Forum, the only teen ever to address the group. He wowed the group, and was so impressive in his thoughtfulness and dedication to strengthening Rochester that I have kept my eyes on him ever since. After growing up in the city, he could have attended any university and gotten a job anywhere he chose, and yet he remained here, going to the U of R and getting a job in banking with ESL, because of his devotion to our community. His combination of youthfulness, expertise, prior experience in public service, integrity, and wisdom make him a perfect candidate to help move our city forward. I urge readers to learn more about him and vote for him. JANE ELLEN BLEEG

Statues’ purpose

I’ve been thinking a lot about Civil War monuments. Flying Confederate flags or allowing Southern Civil War statues to rule town squares reminds us of the degrading status held in this country for its minority population. But this is part of our history, even though much of that tale is far from pretty. So “out of sight, out of mind?” Do we remove it all from the public domain? And by doing that are we succeeding in whitewashing this national blemish? The problem is that today these symbols represent new dimensions of evil. Slavery was an appalling reality, and fighting to defend it was monstrous. But now the symbols of that war are overlaid with those from another modern war. No longer hitched only to slavery, they stand again for extermination of all religious and minority groups. No civilized nation can tolerate that.

But what about the northern monuments to that same war? Do we let those stay? What about General Sherman, an unnecessarily vicious tyrant but one who fought on the “winning side”? General Grant? Why must they be left in place if the Civil War itself was a black era in US history? In defense of the Robert E. Lee statues, someone said to me recently, “Many families lost loved ones in that war. Many Americans died bravely fighting for their cause. They should be remembered.” I suppose the same thing applies to all war monuments. I don’t believe any war deserves that monumental glitter, the promise tacitly made by civic and political leaders to “always remember the war dead” as some kind of reward in perpetuity. Civic monuments should be erected for super achievement in advancing human understanding of our universe and our role in it, for advancing the common good. And by the way, how many monuments of females have you seen? Where’s a statue of Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress – before she could even vote –Marie Curie, Rosa Parks, Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space? For that matter, Alan Shepard, the first American in space? These are the people that deserve homage. War dead deserve to be mourned. That’s what cemeteries are for. SHIRLEY M. DAWSON

Build more, not less

It feels as though Rochesterians swallowed the notion, at some point, that cities are inherently terrible. As a result, we keep trying to “improve” the city by making it more like a suburb: more grass! More parking! Lower-density zoning! We need more businesses, homes, industry – places to go and things to do and reasons and support for people to live and work here. We need fewer empty lots, and a park on Parcel 5 or the Loop will just be another (nicely landscaped) empty lot. Cities can be wonderful. Build something wonderful on Parcel 5. STEVE SHON

URBAN JOURNAL | BY MARY ANNA TOWLER

Which side are you on? Trump, morality, and us Racial, ethnic, and religious hatred in this country aren’t new. They predate the founding of the nation. So Donald Trump didn’t create the sentiments that the white supremacists and racists and anti-Semites spewed out in Charlottesville, Virginia, August 11 and 12. But he embraced those sentiments and the people who marched with torches and shields and guns. He voiced their belief and their anger, and he stood comfortably on their side. And we can no longer minimize the significance of his actions by assuming that they’re the result of cold calculation, done for political or business self-interest. Donald Trump stood with the marchers because he believes what they believe. Think of his birther attacks on Barack Obama – which date as far back as 2011, when he insisted that he had sent investigators to Hawaii and that “they cannot believe what they’re finding.” Think of the Justice Department’s suit against him, his father, and Trump Management for discriminating against African Americans. Think of his slurs against Mexican immigrants when he announced his candidacy, his repeated focus on excluding Muslim immigrants, his opposition to plans for a Muslim cultural center and mosque near Ground Zero. Think of his attack on US District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, an Indiana native of Mexican heritage. Think of his rallies during the presidential campaign: his sneers, his rage, his promise to pay legal fees for fans “who knock the crap out of” protesters at the rallies. He wasn’t acting, any more than he was when he was caught on videotape bragging about groping women. This is who he is. And so, on August 11 and 12, hundreds of white men marched with torches at night and shields and guns in the daytime in Charlottesville. They weren’t marching to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee. The statue’s pending removal gave them an excuse. Chants like “You will not replace us,” “Jews will not replace us” had nothing to do with a bronze statue of a Confederate general. The young and middle-aged toughs knew what they were doing. They knew exactly what they were marching for. And so did anybody watching their demonstrations or reading about them afterward. Every member of the Trump administration knew what the marchers were marching for – including the vice president, who has continued to smile approvingly at the president and said he “stands with” him on his Charlottesville statements.

Every member of the Trump administration knew what the white men were marching for in Charlottesville on August 11 and 12.” Every Republican member of Congress knows what Charlottesville was about, every Republican governor, every member of every state legislature. So do the billionaires like Sheldon Adelson who financed the Trump campaign. It is time for Republicans all over the country to speak out on behalf of their party and their nation, against the man who is leading both. And as the Rev. Lewis Stewart noted last week, that includes local Republican officials. I don’t think that the white nationalists, racists, and anti-Semites who marched in Charlottesville represent a majority of the country. But I don’t believe their kind will ever go away. (Nor do I condone meeting their violence with violence. And there is no place in politics for Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, a Democrat, who said on Facebook that she wished Trump would be assassinated.) But what matters is where the country stands. And that will be defined both by the actions of its leaders and the actions of its ordinary citizens, rich and poor, powerful and weak. “To sin by silence when we should protest, makes cowards out of men,” American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox wrote. A few Republican leaders around the country have spoken out. But only a very few. The others have been silent. They were silent when Donald Trump shouted hatred during his campaign for the presidency. They have been silent as he has attacked immigrants. Can they not find the courage to speak out now? Not even now? rochestercitynewspaper.com

Faith leader: speak out on Charlottesville

The Rev. Lewis Stewart, president of the United Christian Leadership Ministry of Western New York, criticized the white Evangelical community and the Monroe County Republican Committee for failing to speak out against President Donald Trump’s remarks on the actions of white supremacists who convened in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as his administration’s ties to the socalled alt-right movement. Stewart was particularly direct in his remarks about the Evangelical community; faith communities need to be a “moral witness” against racism, he said. “To remain silent in the face of Charlottesville and police use of excessive force against people of color implies a complicity in White National identity and support of Trump’s racism,” he said.

Pittsford weighs construction halt

The Pittsford village board delayed its vote on a yearlong construction moratorium until September 12 and will continue accepting public input through that date. Village officials say they want time to update the village’s zoning code. But the moratorium plan came on the heels of a Wilmorite proposal to build

a hotel, spa, and restaurant, along with office and retail space along Schoen Place.

Warfield, who had lived in Rochester for 60 years, chaired the Monroe County Adoptive and Foster Care services, where she promoted adoption of children of color, and she helped establish the Urban League of Rochester and supported the FIGHT organization in its efforts promoting economic and employment equality. Mayor Lovely Warren described Warfield as an inspiration and a trailblazer.

RIT expands its role in cyber defense

Rochester Institute of Technology was designated as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense research. RIT was already recognized for its expertise in cyber defense education, and only 39 schools in the country have the dual designations. The National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security sponsor the designations, with the goal of promoting the development of technology and policies to prevent a catastrophic cyber event.

Makeshift barrier is a statement Plungers can make one heck of a point if used creatively. And so they did on Exchange Boulevard, where sometime before daybreak last Thursday someone stuck a bunch of them on the outer edges of the bike lanes on either side of the road. The handles were wrapped in reflective material, and they essentially became bollards for a de facto protected bike lane. But by the end of Thursday, vehicles had thrashed the makeshift guards on one side of the road and punched a few holes in the barrier on the other side of the road. In other

Street “demonstration project” on his way into work that morning and was grateful for it. The bike lanes were added several years ago when the city converted a section of Exchange from four lanes to two. The changes were meant to attack a speeding problem on the wide, pin-straight road, Wagner says. But vehicles still travel well in excess of the posted 30 mph speed limit. The ghosts of the old dotted vehicle lane lines are still on the road, too. That creates a bit of confusion for drivers, who occasionally veer into or drive in the bike lane.

words, the offending drivers helped bolster the case for sanctioned, wellmade buffers on Rochester’s bike lanes. And that was likely the point. (Nobody has claimed responsibility.) Many Rochester bike advocates have asked the city to increase the number of protected bike lanes on its streets. They say the barriers would help make cyclists – including users of the city’s new bike-share system – feel safer and would boost ridership. Scott Wagner, a Corn Hill resident, bike commuter, and member of the Rochester Cycling Alliance, says he saw the Exchange

People on the far right are coming together and sharing what is “at its core, a violent ideology,” says Metro Justice’s Colin O’Malley. “We need to be having real conversations about the fact that these folks are organizing in our communities.”

ACTIVISM | BY REBECCA RAFFERTY

Activists track local hate movement Members of Metro Justice and Eastside Antifascists are tracking the actions of local individuals who participate in regional and national white nationalist and white supremacist rallies and are spreading racist ideologies on far-right message boards. Metro Justice’s organizing director, Colin O’Malley, says in the last year he has received word of individuals planning Rochester meetings through the neoNazi site The Daily Stormer. And he says the March Against Sharia Law, held in Syracuse in June, was a gathering of a similar assortment of the far-right groups that congregated in Charlottesville for the Unite the Right white supremacists rally. “There’s increasingly this actual organized basis for which people on the far, far right are coming together and sharing, really at its core, a violent ideology,” O’Malley says. “At this point we need to be having real conversations about the fact that these folks are organizing in our communities, and how do we respond.” On message boards, residents of the Rochester area have posted hate messages referring not only to African Americans but also to Jews, gays, and lesbians and have discussed crashing local anti-racism rallies.

In June, Metro Justice’s office was the target of intimidation when two men arrived at the door asking for O’Malley, who was in a meeting. They handed a flier with a picture of Pepe the frog — a cartoon drawing that has become an alt-right mascot — to Metro Justice fundraising and membership director Andrew Thomas. Shortly thereafter, O’Malley discovered that the same flier was dropped at his home — indicating that the men knew where he lived. There have been other documented instances of race-based intimidation in Rochester. During the Trump presidential campaign, white supremacist fliers were left at Brighton and Pittsford residences. And someone runs a hate-filled Facebook page, called Rochester NY Crime, which targets and insults black people and where people gather online to unleash epithets and violent discussions. The many petitions asking Facebook to take the page down have been unsuccessful. News broke last week that Honeoye Falls man Jarrod Kuhn attended the Charlottesville rally. Kuhn was identified in photographs and videos taking part in the tiki torch demonstration and lunging

at counter-protestors the next day. The Democrat & Chronicle reported that he was also at the Syracuse rally in June. Members of Eastside Antifascists distributed hundreds of fliers in Honeoye Falls saying that Kuhn was involved in the rally. Kuhn has denied being a white supremacist and told the Democrat & Chronicle that he was there simply to protest the removal of the statue of Robert E. Lee. Perinton resident Robert Sayer Jr. was at the Charlottesville rally as well – Colin O’Malley of Metro Justice. PHOTO BY KEVIN FULLER and was identified in a photo taken at the Syracuse rally. Sam Spoto has lived in the Maplewood neighborhood since the 1940’s, and remains one of its most ardent cheerleaders. “I remember when we had two movie theaters, grocery stores, lots of restaurants, and some major employers within walking distance,” says Spoto, who heads the Maplewood Neighborhood Association. “Imagine being able to walk to everything today, including work. You could live here cheaply and raise a family; that’s exactly what we did. It was great.” Spoto’s pride for the Maplewood neighborhood isn’t without merit. It’s one of the city’s oldest, with a history rich in industrial milestones and the scenic beauty of the Genesee River gorge and Lower Falls. The Maplewood Historic District boasts tree-lined streets and housing dating back to the mid-1800’s. While Maplewood is facing its share of

challenges, they’re not nearly as daunting as those in some neighborhoods. Just off North Clinton Avenue and Clifford Avenue is a stretch of side streets where the lots on all corners are little more than patchwork quilts of grass. In the area often referred to as the El Camino neighborhood, so many homes and buildings have been demolished that vacant lots are ubiquitous. Some streets have the sketchy look of a mouth with missing teeth. The North Clinton corridor is a diverse community, but its large Latino population is what distinguishes it from other areas of the city. “North Clinton is still seen as the cultural center, where the Latino flavor is the strongest,” says Miguel Melendez, special projects director with IberoAmerican Development Corporation. It’s also one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods, with a long history of openair drug trade. It’s not unusual to drive down a North Clinton or Conkey Avenue side street and be approached by dealers assuming you’re swinging through the area to buy. Eugenio Marlin, vice president of the Ibero-American Development Corporation, describes North Clinton as the region’s brand name for illegal drugs, specifically heroin. The area’s reputation is as much of an obstacle as the drug problem itself. “It has become a convening area, because it’s so accessible to 104,” Marlin says. Users from all over the county come into the neighborhood to buy and use their drugs, leaving needles scattered across sidewalks and driveways, he says. Melendez and Marlin say that the current administration has been working with residents to combat the problem. “We’re picking up fewer needles,” says Melendez. And Mayor Lovely Warren recently initiated a new program to combat opioid addiction involving the Rochester Police Department and Rochester Regional Health. Rather than making an arrest, officers have the option of offering drug offenders access to treatment. Still, Marlin and Melendez are listening carefully to what all the candidates are proposing to eliminate North Clinton’s drug problem, because it undermines all other efforts to improve the area, they say. “It continues to victimize the neighborhood, whether intentional or not,” Marlin says. “Parents, children, homeowners, business owners – we are all working harder and harder, but we continue to struggle with this, no matter how hard we work at it. We need political servants who are fully committed to improving the northeast. This has to end.” More police presence would help, says Ida Perez, a homeowner in the

neighborhood. That would give residents more confidence to be active and less fearful of retaliation from dealers. The home she lives in belonged to her parents, and she says that contrary to what many people think, there are many long-time residents who don’t rent. They’re owners like her who refuse to leave, she says. “Many people on my street are owners, but they just don’t know what to do,” says Perez. She tells them to call the police and be persistent. There’s another huge worry shared by some parents, she says. “They fear that their kids will find out that selling is ‘easy money,’” Perez says. “We have to get out of this fearful zone if things are going to get better.” The area’s underlying problem with drugs has overshadowed its many positive aspects, Ibero’s Marlin says. He points to Project HOPE, a collaborative program in the El Camino community designed to improve health and educational outcomes for families and children. New affordable housing in the form of 50 single-family, three- and four-bedroom units has been added to the neighborhood, Marlin says. And he’s been urging the major employers near the area to help with job training and create employment opportunities. There’s an opportunity to capitalize on El Camino’s unique Latino culture, Marlin says. Businesses can prosper on North Clinton, he says, citing El Pilon Criollo as an example of a restaurant that draws customers from all over the city. “We have invested a lot of money in the area, about $20 million since 2000,” he says. “We’re working very hard and we’re not going to stop.”

Ralph DiTucci mixes a Negroni behind the bar at Nagle's Observance. DiTucci, the bar's program director, and Eric Nagle, the owner, opened Nagle's Observance in Midtown last month. PHOTO BY KEVIN FULLER

Tucked behind Fuego Coffee Roasters on the corner of Euclid and Atlas streets, the recently opened craft cocktail bar Nagle’s Observance wants to contribute to the growing Midtown scene. Through metal double doors (just to the right of a colorful wall mural of the cover of Joywave’s 2017 album, “Content”) there is a low-lit, minimalist space, all wood and concrete and gleaming metal. At the far end, an open door leads to Fuego. Only a simple partition wall separates the two neighbors, and through the slats you can see baristas at work at the espresso machine and hear the buzz of people. Nagle’s Observance is a newcomer to Midtown, but owner Eric Nagle isn’t a stranger to the area. He purchased the space at 45 Euclid Street in 2010, two years after moving back to Rochester from New York City. In the years since, developers have poured resources into Midtown, drawing foot traffic and residents into the area, and

changing the game for local businesses. The “observance” in the bar’s name represents the owner’s vision to be “an establishment that can literally look out upon the growth of the neighborhood while serving the community,” Nagle says. The latter is conveyed in the bar’s logo, which depicts a top-hatted man gazing through a telescope. At the time he purchased the building, Nagle and his then-business partner, Jesse Wilson, were working in construction and looking to invest in a project together. According to Nagle, he and Wilson drew on their shared appreciation for “friends, music,

meeting new people, building things, and dreaming up creative business concepts,” and decided to start a club. When the Euclid building came up for sale, Nagle says, he fell in love with its features and history. Nagle says he haggled over the price of the property with the building’s out-of-town owner for nearly a year. The negotiations might have broken down if Nagle hadn’t seen a news story about the proposed renovation of Midtown Tower. Banking on greater development in the area, Nagle accepted the owner’s counteroffer the next day. He and Wilson initially considered biding their

time and waiting until the redevelopment of Midtown Tower was complete before launching their business, but the appeal of being one of the first new businesses on the scene was too strong. As Nagle says, “Someone has to be the first.” In October 2010, Nagle and Wilson opened Decibel Lounge, which ran until 2013. Nagle maintained the space as a venue for private events, called 45 Euclid. After Decibel closed, Nagle says he received several proposals on what to do with the space, but nothing fit with the values he wanted in his business. Nagle was introduced last February to Ralph DiTucci, a food and beverage industry veteran who had worked for the last 16 years at 213 Hospitality in Los Angeles. Nagle says DiTucci’s experience and values were a match with his own business vision, and DiTucci is now Nagle’s Observance’s program director. The two launched Nagle’s Observance four months later. The bar’s June soft opening capitalized on increased foot traffic during the Rochester International Jazz Festival, and business stayed strong through its August 5 grand opening, Nagle says. Now, the bar is becoming a watering hole for Midtown-area workers, and Nagle and DiTucci say they’re already seeing regulars. “Our goal is to be so much more than a place to have a drink,” Nagle says. “The hope is to create a norm where business people can stop in after a day at the office, still in a suit, and find commonality and conversation with the local artist sitting next to them who hasn’t changed out of their paint-covered T-shirt.” Nagle and DiTucci aim to be open seven days a week, yearround, a schedule they say reinforces their commitment to being a Midtown mainstay. As for the cocktails, Nagle and DiTucci want to keep it “no frills and solid.” Granted, if you want something a little left of center — such as the “Tricks are For Kids,” which consists of three frozen juice blocks doused in gin — Nagle’s Observance has those options on the menu. However, DiTucci says his cocktail background largely focuses on simple things done to perfection. Even the ice cubes get special treatment. DiTucci owns Cristallino Premium Ice, which makes giant-size, slow-melting, crystal-clear ice cubes. For curious drinkers who want to sample before committing to a full beverage, Nagle’s offers omakase service, that is chef’s (or in this case bartender’s) choice. If you order omakase style, you’ll get five or six micrococktails to share among the table. DiTucci says this way of ordering is a great way for customers to figure out what they do and don’t like. rochestercitynewspaper.com

[ BLACK METAL ] All things will inevitably come to an end.

No musical subgenre is better versed in that concept than black metal, with all its apocalyptic doomsaying and endtimes sloganeering. However, while universal entropy and our eventual destruction are foolish to denounce, that doesn’t mean we can’t mourn the great bands we’ll lose along the way, and local black metal titans Nokturnal Hellstorm’s breakup is a stinging loss. As the band so eloquently put it on Facebook, “black metal diva Ron decided to move to Texas and fuck over his band, so come down to the Jar for their last show ever, and spit in his face!” With Orodruin and Mavradoxa. — BY ALEXANDER JONES

Whoopi Sticks pulls no punches whatsoever on its new EP, “Surprising Squirts.” The music is unapologetically brash, loud, and foul-mouthed — and that’s just the contribution from drummer and lead shouter Lindsey Warning. The sound is so lofi, the guitars are as crude and noisy as rusty hacksaws. Whoopi Sticks is for people who like their music rowdy and irreverent. a veritable chanteuse whose evocative voice brings to mind a kind of modern-day, indie Édith Piaf. With the moody set of seven songs that make up the Brooklyn band’s atmospheric self-titled album, Thelma puts out a sound that’s an irresistible amalgamation of indie pop band Eisley, folk singer-songwriter Basia Bulat, and the early work of art rockers My Brightest Diamond and St. Vincent. [ ACOUSTIC/FOLK ] Chris Wilson . Little Theatre Café, 240 East Ave. thelittle. org. 7-9 p.m.

On his new solo album, “Polka Dot Swing,” Ryan “Yarms” Yarmel comes across less as a singersongwriter and more as a straight-up storyteller. And that’s a good thing. Rather than cling to the conventions of indie folk, Yarmel reaches back into the archives of American music, drawing from jazz, blues, and Americana. The 10-song album is about as unadorned as they come, with Yarmel accompanying himself with guitar and little else. Whispers of additional instrumentation add intrigue, but it’s his earnest voice that holds your attention. One of the best things about this record is that Yarmel isn’t afraid to get raw musically, consistently valuing expressive mood over technical proficiency. The track “64” is particularly no-frills, propelled by a wonderfully messy, full-on strum. “Their Ghosts” combines grungy folk and garage rock with twangy country flourishes, bringing The Killers’ “Sam’s Town” era to mind. Highlights include the beautifully lonely “Prince,” the edgy folk-rock crooner “1863,” and “I Luv You All the Way” — one of the best songs I’ve heard in a long time. Fans of quirky contemporary folk artists like Sam Amidon, David Karsten Daniels, and Holy Sheboygan! will find a lot to love on the fascinating “Polka Dot Waltz.” — BY DANIEL J. KUSHNER

Maybird “Unraveling” 30th Century Records/Columbia Records maybirdmusic.com

Earlier this summer, Maybird released “Unraveling,” a brisk, four-song EP produced by The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney. “Unraveling” further establishes the rock group’s existing sound while bringing it to a wider audience via Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records. The layered, folk-psychedelic sheen on which Maybird has built its reputation is still palpable, but the band makes subtle stylistic tweaks that vary from song to song. On the opening track, “To the Stars,” amid mystical folk vibes, an enigmatic yet straightforward melody inhabits front man Josh Netsky’s warm voice — which here resembles that of a more nasal Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes. At the heart of the EP is an understated, synth-infused aesthetic. During the song “Grace,” dreamy keyboards lend a retro-1980’s, Hall and Oates pop feel at moments, with Kurt Johnson’s brilliant work on the pedal steel preventing a possible descent into kitsch. Compared to the band’s 2016 EP, “Turning Into Water,” “Unraveling” has the band venturing more into the realm of atmospheric pop — resulting in the loss of some of the gravitas and edginess that has made Maybird so compelling in last few years. — BY DANIEL J. Music And since his name has kept coming up in politics recently, I thought I should write about that dinner, to remind Americans who this man was and how his influence continues to affect us today. There will be those who won’t recognize the name, so maybe they will check out Wikipedia. How did you hook up with Neil deGrasse Tyson?

Singer-songwriter and author Christine Lavin is about to release her 23rd studio album, “Spaghettification,” on August 29. PHOTO PROVIDED

Folkzinger’s mem-wha [ INTERVIEW ] BY ROMAN DIVEZUR CHRISTINE LAVIN FIND THE MUSIC AT CHRISTINELAVIN.COM

Christine Lavin is a wonder. The 65-year-old singer-songwriter’s performances are fresh and interactive, and whether she’s playing the coffee house circuit, a festival, or rocking out on the front porch of her sister’s house in the Highland Park neighborhood, Lavin sandwiches her shows in between rounds of knitting and fancy napkin folding with her fans. Lavin’s concerts involve plenty of humor and storytelling, a lot of times about her encounters with celebrities — the SUNY Brockport graduate has crossed paths with a bunch of famous people, which she chronicles in her 2010 book, “Cold Pizza for Breakfast: A Mem-wha?” — and she often includes surprising feats, like launching into a rap or twirling a baton. “Spaghettification,” Lavin’s 23rd studio album will be released on August 29. The 15-track album contains funny tunes (“College Fight Song For Sesquipedalians”), serious songs (“Turn This Ship Around”), and mixed bags (“It’s Your Funeral. Discuss”). All of the songs display Lavin’s ability to use clever lyrics and monologues to clearly articulate what’s exactly on her mind. Plus, Lavin’s charming voice frames it all perfectly. CITY Newspaper shot out questions via email to Christine Lavin, who shot back answers while on tour in Canada. An edited transcript follows. CITY: What’s your secret to attracting good karma? Christine Lavin: I didn’t know I had one. But if

I attract good karma, it’s like my friend singersongwriter Megon McDonough says, “Watch where you’re going, because that’s where you’ll end 12 CITY AUGUST 23 - 29, 2017

up.” If you are always looking down, expecting the worst, focusing on the negative, you’ll end up in the gutter. But if you’re looking up, focusing on the positive, expecting to be treated well, that’s how you’ll end up. What was your wildest gig ever?

Someone thought I’d be well received at CBGB back in the 1980’s. I don’t know what they were smoking. So I showed up, and I asked the stage manager if it’s safe to leave my purse in the dressing room. After he stopped laughing his head off, he told me the only safe place for my purse was onstage right next to me, with my foot securely planted on its strap. So that’s how I performed, and crazy punk heads danced all around to my songs, banging into each other on the “dance floor.” There was some kind of punk band following me, so I grabbed my guitar, my purse, zoomed out of there, and never looked back. Funny enough, a few years later I met Joey Ramone at Vin Scelsa’s radio show. Vin introduced us on the air and Joey told me he wanted to write songs with me. I didn’t believe him — and I couldn’t imagine writing with him, so I chalked it up to one of those show-biz conversations where people say things that sound good, but they’re not really serious about. But I did give Joey my number, though he never called. And now he’s gone. Maybe I should have called him? Why did you decide to incorporate your other skills into your performances?

I believe any skill you have — within reason — can be part of your show if it is entertaining. I don’t knit or fold fancy napkins onstage, but I do backstage, and it occurred to me that if audience members knew that’s what was going on, they

might want to be part of it. This weekend I’m performing at the Kingsville Folk Festival in Canada, and they’ve actually scheduled a napkinfolding workshop on Saturday afternoon. I always travel with a dozen cloth napkins in my suitcase, so even though I didn’t know this activity was officially scheduled, I’m prepared. Can you describe your song-writing process?

I write from inspiration; hardly ever write on command. I never know where song ideas will come from, but once an idea takes root, it won’t leave me alone until I write it. It’s like an annoying friend, constantly tugging on my sleeve saying, “Write me! Write me!” And when I focus on it, the process envelopes me, I lose all track of time, can stay up all night, fall into bed at 8 a.m., then wake up three hours later with that song idea doing its sleeve-tugging, “Finish me! Finish me!” Nobody chooses songwriting — songwriting chooses you. It can be a lonely, frustrating life sometimes. Is there a theme behind your new album “Spaghettification”?

I can’t say there’s a specific theme, but these are songs that I am writing now, having started writing songs more than 50 years ago. One good thing about being a mature songwriter is that you have much more material to draw from. One of the songs, “What the Hell Was That?,” was a disastrous dinner I had many years ago at a Manhattan restaurant. My long-time love was an attorney, and he hinted he was bringing someone to dinner, but wouldn’t tell me who because I think he thought I wouldn’t show up. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the man he brought was eventually one of the most reviled Americans of the 20th Century. He turned out to have revolting table manners, too.

He called me up at 2 p.m. on a Monday afternoon and asked if I would come and sing “Planet X” at his “Astronomers & Comedians” concert at the Beacon Theater that night at 8 p.m. I had six hours’ notice. Luckily it was the year of the Pluto flyby, so I had been singing “Planet X” fairly often; I was ready. But it was still nerve-racking because I got one “D” in college at SUNY Brockport in Astronomy. I knew I’d be in the presence of 1,500 Astronomy A+ students, so I was sweating bullets. But I made it through, and Neil not only gave me a copy of the recording, he okayed it being included on the album. I hope this makes up for my “D.” At what point did you finally feel like you made it as a musician?

I think the applause at the end of “Planet X” that night. It was the biggest applause I ever experienced, and it was recorded. No matter how low I might get — I can remind myself that for one shining moment I was in the presence of one (if not the) most important science voice in our country, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and he and his followers dug my song about Pluto. One time after a concert in Chicago, a woman told me her 7-year old son had memorized “Planet X” and recited it three times in a row that morning at breakfast. Maybe that kid will grow up and become a scientist and figure out how to reverse global warming. Where is the most interesting place a Christine Lavin song has been played?

The oddest place was a high-end stereo store on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I remember the brand name, Bang & Olufsen — ridiculously priced stereo equipment. When I asked the salesman why he was playing the album he was (I didn’t tell him it was mine) he said he chose it (“Attainable Love,” recorded in 1990) because it was perfectly mixed and mastered, and it was the best way to show off the speakers that he sold. The producer who engineered that album was David Seitz, a physician whose hobby was producing and engineering music albums. Before we left the store I did tell the salesman it was my record playing. He was as surprised as I was walking in. I felt weird to hear my music coming out of speakers I could never, ever afford to buy in homes I would never, ever set foot in.

SLUDGE METAL | EYEHATEGOD

For a band with almost 30 years of activity under its belt, it’s nothing short of inspiring that New Orleans sludge metal pioneers EyeHateGod are still full of surprises. After a string of increasingly caustic records, from 1990’s “In the Name of Suffering” to 2000’s “Confederacy of Ruined Lives,” the band entered a lengthy dark period it seemed it’d never emerge from. The next decade put the members of EyeHateGod through a harrowing gauntlet, including a life-saving liver transplant for singer Mike Williams and the tragic death of drummer Joey LaCaze. Through all of this hardship, however, EyeHateGod has reemerged, releasing some of the best music of its career and touring harder than ever. “Schemes: Poetry Inspired Paintings” THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2 MAKERS GALLERY AND STUDIO, 34 ELTON STREET, THIRD FLOOR FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, 10 A.M. TO 6 P.M. FREE | 507-3569; MAKERSGALLERYANDSTUDIO.COM

Leading up to Monday afternoon’s Great American Eclipse, I visited Makers Gallery and Studio to see the current show, “Schemes,” which consists of eight collaborative paintings and poems arranged in artful installations. I had been reading some articles about how the sky show would affect minute animal life on Earth, so my dome was already brimming with wonder at macro and micro levels. The poems written by J. Edward Moss and the responses painted by Virginia McDonald — in their combined celestial-terrestrial terms and imagery — brought to mind Annie Dillard’s wonder-filled “Total Eclipse,” her heart-rending, perfect response to witnessing the last total solar eclipse in 1979. “We teach our children one thing only,

as we were taught: to wake up,” she wrote. “We teach our children to look alive there, to join by words and activities the life of human culture on the planet’s crust. As adults we are almost all adept at waking up. We have so mastered the transition we have forgotten we ever learned it. Yet it is a transition we make a hundred times a day, as, like so many will-less dolphins, we plunge and surface, lapse and emerge. We live half our waking lives and all of our sleeping lives in some private, useless, and insensible waters we never mention or recall. Useless, I say. Valueless, I might add — until someone hauls their wealth up to the surface and into the wide-awake city, in a form that people can use.” This usefulness drawn from private depths that Dillard describes — trawling the unfathomable realms of individual capacity and returning with pearls — is science and technology, but it’s also art. It’s also poetry. Moss approached McDonald a while ago about collaborating, says Makers curator Alex Gruttadaro. Color is the unifying theme, and Moss gave himself a set of parameters: each poem is defined by a different color scheme; each will by five lines in length; and each line will contain a shade of the scheme or an object that shares the color. After Moss created his poems, McDonald used them as

inspiration and incorporated some element of the poem into each painting. This show was also a chance for McDonald, who is known for her illustration practice, to exhibit her painting skills, Gruttadaro says. It’s her first time showing her work at this scale (she has been part of group shows in the past). It’s a fascinating exercise between artists, and for the audience, to find which pieces of phrasing inspired what imagery. Moss’s poem “blu” speaks of song and skies, the sea and sorrow; McDonald painted a blue whale soaring through the cosmos, trailed by a swirl of bubbles, and cradled subtly by a hand formed by the stars. Moss’s enigmatic little “zlda” suggests old bones and new, green growth: “hope that colors ivory // brought from cities sown in emerald // stay determined like jade(d) dreams // swung round viridian’s brain // catching luck by the clover.” McDonald picked up on these subtle images, painting a moss-covered skeletal hand clutching a green gem. Tiny foliage and mushroom caps, each a tiny painting on cut paper adhered to the whole, trail up the not-so-lifeless limb. McDonald’s response to Moss’s “sno”— with its wintery tone both punishing and full of promise — was to paint a small bird about to alight on a gently gesturing marble hand, surrounded by branches of frozen red berries. Her painting after “scrlt,” features a femme fatale cradling a human heart to her ear, listening carefully as it pumps a crimson current down her arms and over her shoulders. With only eight small works and a lot of space to fill, “Virginia and I talked at length about creating some sort of installation atmosphere around each piece,” Gruttadaro says. “Because we knew that there was going to be so much space between them for them to breathe, it would be way too much white walls.” McDonald and Gruttadaro solved the problem by creating an installation aspect of floral and natural elements around each piece. Taking cues of hue and symbolism from each work, the installations include swaths of vibrant silk flowers or leaves, a whirlwind of black feathers, or a field of stars painted directly on the wall around the framed works. It has the effect of an engaging burst of life, drawing the viewer in for a closer look at the small words and worlds. A boxed set of prints, containing each of the poems and images, is available for purchase at Makers.

THEATER | AMY STILLER: ‘JUST TRUST’

Amy Stiller, the sister of Ben Stiller and daughter of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, has developed her show, “Just Trust,” into a semi-autobiographical exploration of a non-famous woman trying to survive in a famous family. The one-woman-show examines topics like family and childhood in a world that worships celebrity. Stiller herself is actually reasonably famous: she made her film debut in 1970 in “Lovers and Other Strangers” and appeared on “Inside Amy Schumer,” “Bored to Death,” and “King of Queens.” Amy Stiller will perform “Just Trust” on Saturday, August 26, and Sunday, August 27, at the JCC of Greater Rochester’s CenterStage (1200 Edgewood Avenue). 8 p.m. on Saturday; 2 p.m. on Sunday. $20 general; $15 for students. 461-2000; jccrochester.org. — BY GRACIE PETERS 15 books, and a selection of moving image works by Richards. eastmanmuseum.org. Let ‘em roll [ REVIEW ] BY ADAM LUBITOW

“Good Time” (R), DIRECTED BY JOSH AND BENNY SAFDIE OPENS FRIDAY, AUGUST 25

It’s always fascinating to watch a performer’s career progress after they find stardom through a singularly iconic role. Both Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe have been able to transition into a career beyond “Harry Potter,” and post “Twilight,” Kristen Stewart has transformed into an unlikely critic’s darling with terrific performances in indie dramas from “Certain Women” to this year’s “Personal Shopper.” Meanwhile Robert Pattinson, Stewart’s co-star in that star-crossed vampire franchise, has had a slightly harder time of it. But as he’s begun seeking out directors of a singular vision — Werner Herzog, David Cronenberg, James Gray, and soon Claire Denis — he’s been gradually finding roles that show off his talent. That slow and steady rise now builds to his revelatory performance as a desperate small-time crook in the grimy crime-thriller “Good Time.” Between this and “Personal Shopper,” who knew the stars of “Twilight” would be responsible for two of my favorite performances of 2017, so far? Pattinson plays Constantine Nikas, one half of the would-be outlaw brothers at the center of Josh

and Benny Safdie’s urgent exploration of criminal and familial responsibility. The other half of that equation is Connie’s mentally handicapped brother, Nick (played by Benny Safdie). The film opens on a meeting between Nick and his court-appointed psychiatrist (Peter Verby). It’s a session that comes to an abrupt end when Connie summarily barges in and removes his brother. Dragging his sibling away from what seemed on its way to being a beneficial conversation, we get the sense that Connie has a difficult time acknowledging that there’s anything different about his brother and the way he relates to the world. In practice, being so fiercely protective blinds Connie to his brother’s very real needs. We’re never privy to the circumstances that led to Connie becoming Nick’s sole caretaker, but with his knack for spectacularly poor decisionmaking, Connie is clearly a terrible influence. He

eventually gets his brother wrapped up in a bank robbing scheme, which inevitably goes wrong, and the vulnerable Nick is apprehended and taken into police custody. With a gritty immediacy, we follow an increasingly frazzled Connie on a whirlwind tour through New York City’s underbelly as he desperately attempts to put together enough money to get his brother out of jail. Connie sets about trying to free his brother by any means necessary, never for a second considering that Nick might be better off without him. The journey eventually leads him into partnering with squirrely criminal Ray (Buddy Duress) for a scheme involving a Sprite bottle full of LSD and a bundle of cash hidden somewhere inside an amusement park funhouse. There are other characters unfortunate enough to wander into Connie’s path: his naïve and unstable girlfriend

(Jennifer Jason Leigh) whom he hopes might spot him some of the money needed to post bail; and an elderly woman and her teenage granddaughter, Crystal (newcomer Taliah Webster), who Connie literally seduces into helping him out. Then there’s Barkhad Abdi as the amusement park’s security guard with the bad luck to be working on the night Ray and Connie come to collect. The Safdie brothers previously directed the druggy love story “Heaven Knows What,” based on the life of that film’s star Arielle Holmes and her experiences with heroin addiction. Written by Josh Safdie with regular collaborator Ronald Bronstein, “Good Time” matches that previous film’s raw, scuzzy realism with a vivid intensity all its own — the film justifiably earned a Palme d’Or nomination at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Cinematographer Sean Price Williams saturates the frame in neon-lit reds, greens, blues, and oranges as he juggles between handheld closeups that highlight the characters’ desperation, and sending the camera soaring overhead to follow them as they barrel down the city streets. Daniel Lopatin’s electronic score lends the images a propulsive, unnerving energy. As Constantine, Pattinson is brilliant, delivering a magnetic, live-wire performance that’s far and away the best work we’ve seen from him. You don’t root for Connie so much as watch, utterly enraptured, waiting to see what depths he’s willing to sink to. Like a cornered animal, Connie attacks anyone he deems a threat at any given moment. As tense and exciting as “Good Time” often is, it brings with it a sobering undercurrent that takes it beyond mere escapist entertainment. Calling to mind the recent “Lady Macbeth,” the film follows a protagonist who takes advantage of the societal privilege they have and don’t mind the harm they cause those who lack that privilege. The filmmakers make sure we notice, for example, the way in a key moment Crystal draws more police attention than the bank robber standing right next to her. As Connie bulldozes over anyone in his path, the Safdies never ignore the human casualties he leaves in his wake.

Social-lite [ REVIEW ] BY ADAM LUBITOW

“The Only Living Boy in New York” (R), DIRECTED BY MARC WEBB OPENS FRIDAY, AUGUST 25

After the perfectly enjoyable melodrama “Gifted” earlier this year, director Marc Webb returns with “The Only Living Boy in New York,” a comingof-age narrative that cobbles together its story from a collection of familiar elements and tropes, then renders them completely ineffective in the process. Following the lives of well-to-do Manhattan writers, artists, and various cultural elite, “Only Living Boy” is filled to the brim with selfconsciously deployed literary references. But the script by Allan Loeb (“Collateral Beauty”) has an inability to understand how smart people talk to one another; even a fantastically talented cast can’t make the words convincing. Thomas Webb (Callum Turner, “Green Room”) is a 20-something recent graduate entering the malaise of post-college life. An aspiring writer, he’s self-conscious about leading what he believes has thus far been a boring, conventional life. He’s afraid that he won’t have enough material to draw upon once he starts creating stories. Thomas has also been chasing after his friend Mimi (Kiersey Clemons, “Dope”) ever since they spent a night together. But she’s decided they’re better as friends, and Thomas has trouble accepting that. Enter Thomas’s mysterious new upstairs neighbor, W.F. (Jeff Bridges), who immediately begins dispensing life wisdom and offering to help Thomas convince Mimi to sleep with him again. Aside from coming across as a complete creep, W.F. becomes Thomas’s mentor and confidante, taking a vested interest in the boy for reasons that only gradually become clear. He’s also an alcoholic, but in that charming way that only writers in movies are able to be. Bridges also delivers cloying voiceover throughout the story, cluing us into the inner feelings of each character

we meet. Eventually Thomas learns that his publisher father (Pierce Brosnan) is cheating on his fragile, bipolar mother (Cynthia Nixon) with one of his employees, Johanna (Kate Beckinsale). Thomas initially sets out to confront Johanna, but can’t bring himself to say anything to her and settles for following her around the city. Eventually they do speak and as the accusations begin to fly, she starts by out calling him a child who doesn’t understand how the world works — then she ends up sleeping with him … because he’s just so naturally irresistible, you see. As the two enter into their own affair, Thomas seems to be acting out of his own tension with his father, who we learn became a publisher when he couldn’t cut it as a writer himself. “The Only Living Boy in New York” clearly wants to be “The Graduate,” and not just because of the Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack. It also occasionally desires to be a Woody Allen film, but lacks any of the wit Allen brings to even his worst films. The biggest problem here is that the film wants the audience to see Thomas as a good guy at heart, then doesn’t bother to present us with any evidence whatsoever to back that up. Everyone around Thomas can’t stop telling him how funny and clever his observations are; that he’s such a kind, genuine person, and just how goddamn wonderful he is. But we don’t see any of that. It’s possible to tell stories about privileged white people in compelling ways, but Loeb is clearly unfamiliar with what any those ways

might be. None of the female characters have any sort of interior lives of their own, and they seem to exist to guide the men around them into having revelations about their lives. Kiersey Clemons was a vibrant presence in “Dope” and she continues to be, even when playing a character the script can’t be bothered to try and understand. “Love and Friendship” recently reminded us how wonderful Beckinsale can be, but here she’s saddled with a character whose actions don’t make a lick of sense. The film not only wastes the talents of its main cast, but squanders charming performers like Tate Donovan, Wallace Shawn, Anh Duong, and Debi Mazar, who make one scene appearances and then disappear completely. But not before they all sit around having conversations about how New York City has lost its soul. (Insert eye roll here.) There are any number of characters in the story who might make an interesting center to a movie, but the creators don’t have enough imagination to put anything other than a bland, rich, white guy at the center of the world. Because this is an Allan Loeb script, there have to be some late in the game twists to provide the sense that there’s a Deep Meaning in the randomness of life. It didn’t work when Loeb tried it in “Collateral Beauty” and it doesn’t work here. At least “Collateral Beauty” had the batshit insane factor working for it. “The Only Living Boy on New York” ends up as bland and boring as its protagonist.

Well-preserved and comfortable in Maplewood

39 Parkdale Terrace Beautiful leaded glass windows; original interior wood trim; an ornate mantelpiece

half-bathroom, complete with a charming vintage porcelain corner sink. The adjoining

and tile hearth framing a vintage gas fireplace… we expect these charms in the historic homes on and off East Avenue. But the dignified homes in the city’s northwest Maplewood neighborhood, developed around the turn of the 19th into the 20th century as nearby Kodak Park flourished, have these sort of historic graces in abundance, too, giving the active Maplewood Neighborhood Association ample specimens for their annual Historic Home Tour (this year held on September 16th; visit www.maplewood.org for more information). Indeed, just off Lake Avenue, and with quick access to the area’s parks, schools, and the Kodak Center for Performing Arts now anchoring the old Kodak Park, this early 1920s Colonial Revival house exemplifies the comfortable and distinctive blend of old and new in Maplewood’s homes.

dining room is graced with wood floors, which continue through French doors into the living room, complete with the original gas fireplace and leaded glass windows.

Entering the front door off a cozy porch that affords a pleasant view of the tree-lined street running down to Maplewood Park with its Rose Garden and Genesee Riverway Trail, you find yourself in a handsome parlor, currently furnished with a grand piano and lit by a bay window with original leaded glass and wood trim. The spacious kitchen, balancing modern updates with older details, lies beyond; in one corner, a sleek dishwasher shares wall-space with built-in glass cabinetry. With this profusion of storage space, one does not miss the ground floor closet that was converted to a convenient

Listed at $69,900, this 1,600 square foot house, and others like it in the historic Maplewood neighborhood, will not be on the market long. Contact Nothnagle / Howard Hanna realtor Steve Jones at 362-1498 for more information.

A large carved-wood pillar stands sentinel to the stairs and the second floor. Abundant architectural comforts characterize the three second floor bedrooms that open on to the landing: the walk-in closet in the children’s bedroom thoughtfully includes an ample built-in toy chest, and both the large master bedroom and sunlit second bedroom contain walk-in closets as well. Even beyond the living areas, an accessible attic space, basement, and a fenced backyard afford ample space for comfortable living.

Fun [ NEWS OF THE WEIRD ] BY THE EDITORS AT ANDREWS MCMEEL SYNDICATION

Inexplicable

The Adair family of Deerfield Beach, Florida, were startled awake on July 15 by the sound of something meaty crashing onto their roof. When they investigated, they found two packages of Italian pork sausage in the side yard, and three more packages still on the roof. The sausages were in bags marked with the name of a land-clearing company in Alabama. Austin Adair called the company to inquire about the wayward sausages, but “the guy had no idea what I was talking about and probably thought I was crazy,” he said, and the mystery remains unsolved. “I would love to know what really happened,” said Jennie Adair, “because it’s just so, so odd.”

The Naked Truth

Summers are hot in Lawrence, Kansas, and Christopher Steven Carlson, 34, of Riley took advantage of the warm temperatures on July 30 to stroll down a sidewalk in the busy college town in his birthday suit — twice. Police first arrested Carlson around 2 p.m. in downtown Lawrence for indecent exposure, after which he paid his $500 fine and was released. He caught a taxi from the Douglas County Jail back to the downtown area, where he stiffed the driver, left his clothes in the car and resumed his in-the-buff constitutional. Local business owner Meg Heriford said: “Our customers were not alarmed. It was more like, ‘Hey, there’s a naked guy.’” Nakedness does leave one a bit vulnerable, as Travis Tingler, 32, found out on July 16 as he stood unclothed outside his girlfriend’s house in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, shouting and

threatening to hurt the people inside. When police arrived, they tried and failed to get Tingler back into his pants, so they handcuffed him. As they struggled to put him in the police car, Tingler picked up a lighter off the ground, and a probe from an officer’s stun gun struck the lighter, igniting Tingler’s chest and beard hairs. An officer was able to pat the fire out. Nudity, like everything else, is more fun when you can share it with friends. Or so it appeared to drivers along route A66 in Workington, Cumbria, in England, who spied four “shame-faced” men walking along the road wearing nothing but sneakers on July 30. The four “protected their modesty with cupped hands” and appeared to be walking quickly, according to Kathryn Lynn, 50, who drove by with her husband and daughter and snapped a photo of the odd group. “It was a bit of a shock to see,” she said.

The Continuing Crisis

Out of eight candidates for Detroit mayor in the August 8 primary, half were convicted felons, the Detroit News reported. Three women and one man have convictions including gun crimes and assault with intent to commit murder. “Black marks on your record show you have lived a little and have overcome some challenges,” opined political consultant Greg Bowens. Michigan law allows convicted felons to vote and run for office unless they are currently incarcerated, or if their offenses are fraud-related or constitute a breach of public trust. (Update: None of the felons advanced to the general election.)

[ LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION ON PAGE 20 ]

[ LOVESCOPE ] BY EUGENIA LAST ARIES (March 21-April 19): Don’t make impulsive moves or promises when it comes to love, romance and relationships or you’ll find yourself in a compromising position. Keep your dialogue simple and noncommittal, and you will not only capture attention, but you will avoid getting entrapped by someone with ulterior motives or who is manipulative. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Your wisdom, industrious attitude and charm will attract interest. But if you come on too strong or show jealous or possessive tendencies, you will have little luck getting to first base when it comes to love and romance. Be observant and curious, not

critical and overbearing. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Hang out with people you feel comfortable with and who share your ideology and respect for life and liberty. Protect against anyone trying to lure you into a relationship filled with restrictions. Choose intelligence over chemistry when it comes to love, romance and personal relationships. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Set guidelines when it comes to love. Don’t settle for someone who challenges you emotionally. Choose someone who offers as much as you and who is striving to reach similar personal goals. A stable home and relationship will ensure the permanence you

search for. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): A chance to meet someone special is apparent. Head to places or take in events or entertainment that you don’t normally attend. A new interest or pastime will result in meeting someone who shares your mindset. Follow your heart, and your destiny will unfold. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): All you have to do is be a participant. Get out, join in and share your wisdom, imagination and ideas. Someone will be attracted to you, your passion to make a difference and to your physical appearance. Be yourself and let new relationships develop naturally.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Someone that offers a lot of excitement but little substance will attract your attention. Be careful not to get caught up in the moment and lose your sense of equilibrium when it comes to the type of relationship suitable for keeping the tranquil environment you require. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): If you want someone to respond positively, give that person the freedom to come and go as he or she pleases. Anger, possessiveness and jealousy will result in loneliness. Be creative in your approach to love and willing to share whatever is offered, nothing more. Equality will promote happiness.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Show off, make personal changes and look for the type of partner who is doing exactly the same thing you are. A competitive challenge will bring you in contact with someone who is just as challenging as you are and capable of keeping up with you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Practicality might be what attracts potential partners to you, but before you settle on a pretty face, consider if you’ll be paying for the privilege of being with a showpiece or if there is something mentally and financially substantial being offered in return. Don’t be foolish.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Put your best foot forward when it comes to love, relationships and bringing about positive change to your personal life. Get involved in causes you believe in, and the person willing to stand by your side and make things happen will be a promising candidate for love and romance. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Share your emotions openly, and you will discover a potential partner who is just as compassionate, sensitive and loving as you. Don’t be afraid to make the first move or to jump into a commitment if it feels right. Trust your intuition and pursue your romantic dream.
