Charter schools are tremendously popular with parents who want the best for their children and don’t understand how existing schools, or even life in a democracy, works. In a democracy, if we have a system that isn’t working as it should, we get together to fix it, making it work for all Americans. But charter school parents want to separate and insulate their children from the general population of residents in their town or city. This has led to having two separate school systems, with only one of the systems being for “the very poorest children, and with the children with the greatest educational challenges, or with disabilities, or who don’t speak English or live in homes that lack support for education (Urban Journal, December 7).” And having charter schools definitely does lead to having two separate and unequal educational systems, both supported by taxpayers’ dollars. And the issue of having unequal systems supported by taxpayers has been through many courts, each one seeming to approve those schools existence and keeping parents happy. But isn’t this a parallel to the school systems that existed years ago, only those systems were separated by race? Wasn’t this addressed in 1953 with Brown vs. Board of Education? Do those of us who think the current charter school system is unfair have to wait for a lawsuit
addressing this inequality and eliminating it? I definitely believe that parents should have a choice where to send their children to school, and thus charter schools should exist, but funding charter schools with public tax dollars insures a separate and unequal system. It would be good if Making America Great Again included all Americans equally. DAVE WALSH
Restraining orders need reform, too
Regarding the “Bail fail” cover story (News, November 23): When my dad was a City Court judge in the 1980’s, orders of protection were up to the judges to decide. But about 20 years ago, legislation passed that made these documents practically automatic. What lawmakers didn’t take into account was that people would falsely report incidents to the police due to their petty jealousies and desire for power. Thus, arrests are being made because of citizens playing the justice system: neighbor vs. neighbor, brother vs sister, husband vs. wife – all getting vengeance on one another and it is perfectly legal. I can’t tell you how many people I have seen rot in jail who didn’t deserve it because of this order of protection fiasco. The courts know it is wrong but go along with it because they have become a money-making business. Truthfully, restraining orders are rarely necessary because we all realize that if people have made up their mind to do something, no piece of paper is going to stop them. Let’s just admit that we made a mistake allowing orders of protection to become so prevalent. It is best to have both parties appear in front of the judge and have him or her decide if the complaint is valid. CATHERINE STARKWEATHER

Now should we get rid of the Electoral College? The Electoral College has voted, so we can put that modest bit of suspense behind us. On January 20, Donald Trump will become president of the United States. What may not be behind us is the debate over the Electoral College itself. We’re not likely to get rid of it any time soon; that would require an amendment to the Constitution, meaning that it would need approval by two-thirds of the members of the House and the Senate and ratification by legislators in three-fourths of the states. And in this divided, Republican-dominated country, there seems little chance we would pull that off. Still, for those of us worried about this year’s election result, it’s worth weighing the positives and negatives of the Electoral College as we watch that result start having an impact on the country. The big negative is obvious: This year, as in 2000, the Electoral College has given the presidency to someone most voters didn’t want. Several issues shaped the creation of the Electoral College as the founders drafted the Constitution. One, of course, was slavery. The representatives from the South were afraid that the preferences of voters in the southern states constituents would be outweighed by those of people from the North. A lot of people lived in the South, but many of them were slaves, who couldn’t vote (and, of course, white southerners weren’t interested in letting them vote). Another issue: some of the founders didn’t trust the common people. A select group like an Electoral College, they figured, would be better informed, better suited to pick the person best qualified to lead the nation. The Electoral College would be a protection against the election of somebody who, for instance, might be a dangerous but charismatic person who could whip up the masses and get their votes. Many of us, of course, believe that this year we’ve witnessed the opposite, that the popular vote went to the bestqualified person, and the Electoral College has just elected exactly the kind of person it was designed to block. Well, then, don’t the electors have a responsibility to choose the person who is the best qualified? After all, no federal law requires electors to vote for the candidate
WAITING FOR DONALD TRUMP
First of a series on the 2016 presidential election and what comes next.
who won their state. The Constitution doesn’t require it, either. More than half the states do have laws requiring it; the others don’t. And even in those that do, electors who act otherwise don’t face much of a penalty, if any. Historically, though, most electors have followed the will of the voters in their state. And even when some haven’t, it hasn’t made a difference in the election outcome. An election like this year’s, then, presents a dilemma. Where do the electors’ owe their allegiance? To the voters who trusted them to reflect their wishes? Or – if those particular voters’ wishes will put an unqualified person in the White House – to the greater good of the nation? It’s tempting to say that the latter is the easy choice. But as Columbia Law School Professor David Pozen noted recently in a New York Times article, think of what would happen if the Electoral College had given the presidency to Hillary Clinton this week. Even if Donald Trump gracefully accepted that outcome, huge numbers of his supporters would not. The divisiveness and the anger we’ve seen this year would pale in comparison. In the end, which is the greater danger to the nation? Over the next four or more years, we’ll find out. Donald Trump won the required number of Electoral College votes. Hillary Clinton did not. In this country, that’s how we elect a president. I don’t like this year’s outcome. But I accept it. Then should we focus our efforts on trying to get rid of the Electoral College? I don’t know. What happens during the Trump presidency will help me make up my mind, I guess. rochestercitynewspaper.com

Some of the region’s public and private institutions have sports fields with artificial grass that may be defective. FILE PHOTO PUBLIC MONEY | BY TIM LOUIS MACALUSO
Local fields may have faulty turf Several local schools and sporting facilities have installed costly artificial grass that reportedly wears down much sooner than it’s supposed to. When contacted, most weren’t aware of the problem. Nazareth College, University of Rochester, Town of Webster, Penfield Central School District, and the Rochester Rhinos all have the artificial grass, according to a recent National Public Radio report. The issue became public when FieldTurf, the company that sold and installed the grass, sued the product’s maker, Duraspine, in 2011. Court documents showed that FieldTurf executives knew that the grass doesn’t

Washington, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. FieldTurf made about $570 million off the sale of the turf, according to Christopher Baxter and Matthew Stanmyre, the reporters who broke the story for the Newark Star-Ledger and NJ Advance Media this year. The fields are often between 75,000 and 100,000 square feet and cost as much as $500,000. That’s a significant sum, and the cost is frequently paid by taxpayers. FieldTurf issued a statement saying that the turf problem is not widespread and doesn’t affect safety. If customers have concerns, they should contact FieldTurf, the statement said.

Charlotte to give input on port design The City of Rochester and the Charlotte Community Association have agreed to work together to plan the future of the Port of Rochester. The cooperation is a big deal because many Charlotte residents were left with a bad taste and trust issues after the city’s previous attempt to develop the port, says Jonathan Hardin, president of the Charlotte Community Association. That proposal failed due to lack of funding. But some Charlotte residents felt that the city was trying to force an outsized project on their neighborhood. The proposal included a hotel and eight- to 10-story condominiums Some residents also objected to turning public land over to private use. A common complaint about Rochester is that it doesn’t do enough to take advantage of its waterfront — on the lake or the river. But attempts to invigorate the port area have met with mixed success, and some believe that, given Rochester’s harsh winters, the port will always struggle to be a year-round destination. All of that will likely be part of the discussion when the Charlotte Community Association holds a charrette, which is essentially an intense planning session, for the port sometime next year. The

The New York State Photonics Board of Officers has chosen ON Semiconductor at Eastman Business Park on Lake Avenue for a major manufacturing facility. The company makes a variety of electronic devices, including power management systems and sensors. ON Semiconductor beat out 16 other qualifying sites to host the AIM Photonics testing, assembly, and packaging facility. The site still needs an environmental review and the approval of Empire State Development. RIT was a finalist, too, but ON Semiconductor’s cleanroom space and its location at Eastman Business Park — a hub for various advanced manufacturing and tech companies — stood out. The site can be outfitted for the TAP facility for an estimated $10 million less than what the state photonics board budgeted, officials said. AIM Photonics is a Department of Defense program and its goal is to jumpstart a domestic integrated photonics industry. Integrated photonics melds optical devices with semiconductor-based devices to reduce size and power consumption and increase performance and capability. It’s already used for biomedical sensors, imaging equipment, data server switches, and various communications systems. AIM Photonics member companies and universities will have access to the TAP facility. Their device designs will use silicon chips as a base; the chips will be produced in Albany’s foundries. But the completed chips, which are tiny and extremely sensitive, will come to Rochester’s TAP facility for packaging, assembly, and testing.

Cynical ploy halts DMV plan Working with the county administration, Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello had no reason to believe that his plan to open a full-time downtown Department of Motor Vehicles office in late 2017 was in jeopardy. But then the Legislature’s Republican majority reminded him how petty and partisan it can be. Bello had discussed potential DMV spaces with the county’s real estate administrator and they’d checked out a few: a couple of underused areas in the County Office Building and the atrium of City Place on West Main Street. Bello decided on City Place, since the county leases the building and his office already runs a mobile DMV unit there three days a week. Bello says that he even discussed the renovation process with representatives of County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo’s administration. He was under the impression that the county would conduct engineering studies to refine the cost of setting up the DMV at City Place. Once that was done, borrowing and construction could happen. He included funding for two new staff positions for the DMV, but only for the second half of the year, in his 2017 budget. And Dinolfo included the plan — with the DMV funding — in her 2017 budget proposal. (County spokesperson Brett Walsh says that she was just forwarding the budget that Bello provided her, and that she has no position on a full-time downtown DMV.) But the night of the budget vote, December 15, the Legislature GOP amended Dinolfo’s spending plan to shift the $52,000 for the two new DMV staffers to child care subsidies, a highprofile issue in Monroe County. The move surprised Bello; nobody from the Dinolfo administration or Legislature GOP had come to him with problems or questions about his plan, he says. “This was one proposal where I thought the communication was actually happening,” Bello says. County department heads also never told him that only two years remain on the City Place lease, and that the county

is revaluating its space in the facility, Bello says. Representatives from the previous administration insisted for years that the county needs the space. Bello says that a full-time downtown DMV is a priority for his office and that he’ll reach out to Dinolfo administration officials again about finding and securing space for it. All 10 members of the Legislature’s Democratic minority voted against
Dinolfo’s $1.2 billion budget proposal, which ultimately passed due to the Republican majority. During debate, Democratic Minority Leader Cynthia Kaleh introduced an amendment that would have boosted county funding for child care subsidies by $900,000. Local children’s advocates asked the county to boost subsidy spending by $1 million this year. To pay for the increase, Kaleh recommended eliminating some county communications and information services positions. Then Republican Majority Leader Brian Marianetti tacked on a counter amendment that beat the increase down to $52,000 and funded it with the money that Bello budgeted for the additional DMV staff. Marianetti said that he believed the revamped downtown DMV wouldn’t be ready to open in 2017, so there’s no need to fund it in the 2017 budget.
“I’m certainly not taking a position that we should or should not move forward with a downtown DMV,” Marianetti said at one point in the debate. Marianetti’s amendment was a brilliant piece of bare-knuckled political strategy, even if it was cynical. And petty. And disappointing. He dangled a pittance in front of the Democrats, who knew they faced a devil’s bargain: support Marianetti’s poison amendment and punch a hole in Bello’s plan, or risk being painted as anti-children. Marianetti methodically poked holes in Bello’s plan, subjecting it to the sort of scrutiny that GOP legislators never give administration proposals. He focused less on the need for the office, and instead hammered on potential construction costs and whether the office would be ready to open in 2017. Bello has said that putting a branch at City Place would be fairly simple and relatively inexpensive. Deputy County Clerk Jeff McCann and Assistant County Executive William Napier both estimated initial construction costs at, as Napier put it, “the low several-hundred-thousand” area. Marianetti asked whether the money for construction was in the budget, and McCann responded that the clerk’s office could find the money, if necessary. In a later interview, Bello said that the project would first need some studies and plans, and then the county could amend its 2017 capital plan and borrow for the construction.

Ultimately, all of the Dems except John Lightfoot and James Sheppard voted for the Marianetti amendment, though the ones who spoke made it clear that they’d been bullied into it. “My constituents have been robbed,” Democratic Legislator Ernest FlaglerMitchell said.

Paid for in part by the Business Association of the South Wedge Area.
Republicans weren’t making an honest effort to boost child care subsidies; their
shenanigans were designed to deny Bello, an up-and-comer who’s often talked about as a future county exec candidate, a big win. Still, Marianetti framed the vote around the child care subsidies in a statement sent out the night of the budget vote. No definitive steps or plans have been taken to open a downtown DMV office in 2017, he said, so “it was prudent to apply the funds already allocated in the County Clerk’s budget for salaries to instead increase the funding for child care subsidies.” Marianetti did draw out some details that would need to be resolved before a DMV could open, but they were mainly space and real estate issues that could probably be worked out if the county and clerk’s offices communicated constructively. City leaders say that a full-time downtown DMV is important. The day prior to the vote, Bello stood with Mayor Lovely Warren and a handful of Democratic county legislators to publicly announce his downtown DMV plan. Bello and Warren said it’s partly about equity and partly a way to recognize the resurgence of the city’s core. The mobile unit that serves the city has shorter hours than the suburban DMV offices, and it can’t conduct certain complicated transactions. And it operates out of the county parks offices in Highland Park two days a week: a location that is neither accessible to people with disabilities nor easily reached by bus. Roughly 5,000 people live downtown, and that figure is expected to grow to between 8,000 and 10,000 in the next few years, Warren said. In total, 210,000 people live in the city, which makes it the largest Monroe County municipality without a permanent DMV branch. An additional 50,000 people work downtown. “To not have a firm location for the DMV is just wrong,” Warren said.

Always attentive, McClure picked up on additional surrounding sounds. He was in awe. “Some of the sounds that I heard down there were surprising,” McClure says. When discussing the science behind his art, McClure speaks in excited tones, and his eyes give way to a boundless curiosity — all beneath a composer’s carefree coif. “Natural sound was everywhere. In walking on the snow, it is so dry there — it’s actually one of the driest places on the planet — it’s so loud you can’t have a stroll and a conversation with someone. The crunching snow makes too much noise. When I was out in the field recording the sound of Weddell seals and Adelie penguins, the sounds those animals were making were so surprising and so astonishing.” McClure — an adjunct professor of English at SUNY Geneseo and an instructor of Chorale Arranging at The Eastman School of Music — was there to ultimately take the data retrieved on the ice shelf and use it in a composition using mathematics, music, and something referred to as sonification. “Sonification is taking something that doesn’t make sound and expressing it with sound,” McClure says. Frequently, the sound is discovered or exemplified through numbers, not just notes. Yet it’s the marriage of both numbers and notes that allow composers to construct pieces of music, giving their sources a voice. According to McClure, music and numbers are one and the same; the world strikes a harmonious chord when they’re aligned. The marriage of science and music is something that has been part of McClure’s life since childhood, when a series of seizures and inner ear infections rendered him virtually speechless. “From the time that I started speaking, I was a severe stutterer,” McClure says. “What was clear from the beginning was that while my disability was severe, the only time I could open my mouth and not have that disability was when I sang because singing circumnavigates the disability in a person’s brain. So music and singing became very important to me as a child. It was the only time I felt powerful and beautiful.” continues on page 14 rochestercitynewspaper.com CITY 13

voices in the ice When he was 11 years old, McClure attended an intensive six-week, “almost boot camp-like” clinic at SUNY Geneseo. “I learned a skill there that I use right now as I speak,” he says. “It’s a pretty intensive, intentional control of every muscle that makes me sound more or less like people who are normally fluent. My speech is actually better than normally fluent speech. But I can’t really do it more than a couple hours at a time.” Music freed him. It’s not something the
composer has forgotten as he sets out to explore and rekindle the bond between music and mathematics. McClure takes data, frequently gathered from things found in nature, and transubstantiates it into melody and music — in a way personifying the data, animating it, and giving it life. And it’s through this sonification that the man is re-introducing numbers and notes. “This kind of composition work I’m doing is putting those things back together again,” McClure says. “The ancient Greeks, all the way up to people like Galileo in the Renaissance, they saw music and mathematics and astronomy as all parts of — or different 14 CITY DECEMBER 21-27, 2016

expressions of — a greater body of knowledge.” It was around the Renaissance that, McClure says, we started dividing up the disciplines, adding increased specialization in the things that we study, which led to narrower definitions of the words across the ages. “Numbers alone equals arithmetic,” he says. “Numbers in space equals geometry. Numbers in time equals music. And numbers in space and time equals astronomy.” But you’ve got to wonder which side of the equation he’s on. Is the man a scientist or a musician? “Very much a musician,” McClure says. “I’m a pretty lousy scientist, actually. I’m a much better musician. While the connection between music and my stuttering has been a part of my life forever, taking it a step further and actually going into the science of it and to do more work with scientists is something much more recent in my music making.” In his work entitled “Galileo’s Universe,” McClure took some of Galileo’s data regarding movement of the planets, along with other related data sets collected by other scientists from the same period in time or in the same tradition, and transformed it into sound.
“Certainly among contemporary composers there’s a whole range of different strategies,” McClure says. “Many of them do a very rigid translation of a list of numbers into frequencies which creates some very interesting sounds. Those pieces don’t often have a wide audience appeal to them because it’s more of an aesthetic exploration, so to speak.” The other end of sonification is where composers respond personally and emotionally to, for example, a piece of nature, like the composer Bedrich Smetana’s work “The Moldau.” “‘The Moldau’ is this beautiful musical picture of a river starting at its inception and ending in this great crescendo,” McClure says. “What I’m interested in though, is splitting the difference between those two extremes, so I’m using some mathematical translation of data to create the core content of that data, the melodies and the harmonies, and then I take that core concept and put it in a larger arrangement that can have a broader audience.” McClure says his sonification, unlike Smetana’s, isn’t to be taken as literally.
“Not in the way I’m doing it,” he says. “If you have something in nature that makes a sound, a composer can write music that imitates that sound. What I’m doing is a slightly different process, where that river is studied by a scientist and they’ve studied the velocity of the waves, they’ve measured the depth of the river at that point, and describe the river in numbers. I go back into those numbers, and then translate that into sound. In modular mathematics, somebody gives you a data set, a bunch of numbers and you find the range of that from the highest number to the lowest number. And then you divide up that range in a certain number of equal modules.” In other words: creating a scale. “So if I translate a data set about the population of penguins in Antarctica, I could divide up those numbers into mod seven — do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti — creating seven intervals. When I go back to these numbers I can plot them. And so once those data numbers are plotted on this chart of mod seven, you go back and put the notes on the page in the order that they were in in the data. And now, all of a sudden, the musical content is actually being driven by the numbers.”
McClure describes another approach: randomness. Here the music is generated by something else, with varying degrees of palatability and success. “Sometimes it’s going to sound beautiful,” he says. “Sometimes it’s not. Once you’ve generated that initial content, a composer has to come in and say, ‘What can I do with this? Is this going to work as a melody? Is it going to work as a chord progression? If not, maybe it’s going to work as a chord cluster that could decorate
National Science Foundation has called the Artists and Writers Fellowship. And what it is designed to do is to pair working artists in any discipline with scientists in the field to work side by side with them, live with them, learn everything they’re doing in the field, and then come back and create artworks that tell their story. And also, in this case, tell the broader story of Antarctica.” This 40-day excursion was a teaching endeavor as well with several high schools
TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT GLENN MCCLURE, CHECK OUT ARTFORBRAINS.COM another part of the piece.’ So it’s partially this scientific translation of numbers to music. It’s also very much the work of the composer who takes raw material and makes music with it.” McClure’s passion, and his drive to get paid
for it, led him to Antarctica. “As a working composer,” he says, “Part of my job is actually finding ways to get paid as an artist, so I’m frequently searching for funding or grant opportunities to do things. I stumbled upon this fellowship the
and colleges partnering up with McClure for his adventure. That involved some Skype conversations between students in the States and McClure on the Ross Ice Shelf, which is several hundred meters thick and about the size of France. “It floats on the water; there is no land underneath it,” McClure says. “Because of that, the ice shelf is subject to the movement of that water underneath it. So when pressure comes in through the water in the form of energy waves — infragravity waves they call
them — from other parts of the planet, if there’s excess pressure under there, that’s going to heave up that whole ice shelf. And even though it’s the size of France, it’s going to affect that ice shelf. So when there are huge, big ripples in the water that’s actually going to send a ripple through the ice shelf. The more volatile these infragravity waves are, the more cracking and breaking the ice shelf exhibits.” The specific scientific team McClure was working with was headed up by Peter Bromirski, a scientist from the University of California, San Diego. Bromirski’s team has been using seismometers — typically used to measure earthquakes — imbedded in the Ross Ice Shelf for two years in order to measure the movement of the shelf based on interactions related to global warming. Part of their research is to find that connection while McClure collects data to interpret the whole affair musically … perhaps just in time. “Global warming has called us all together to be a part of the solution,” he says. “In a specific way, it’s too hard to tell. But in a broader sense, I think science is speaking to us in an increasingly urgent way.”
With the gathering of data by the scientists complete, it’s now left up to the composer, who is anxious to hear what it will become. “The first job of a creator is to be a listener,” he says. “The second job of the creator is to sort out all the stuff you’re not going to use. It’s a process of filtering all these sounds in the world and saying, ‘Gee, I wonder which sounds I’m going to work with and what story do I want to tell with them.’ It might be mod-seven with diatonic scales or mod-11 with chromatic scales. I’m waiting for Peter to send me the data because, of course, they have to take that data from the seismometers, put that in the aggregate and crunch it.” With the world as an infinite source of sound — both musical and mathematical, composers like McClure have no shortage of places to explore. “I’m just really excited about becoming a larger part of this world that puts musicians and scientists back together again.”

powerful tool. As an increasing number of bands turn their attention toward more grounded themes, the number of songs being written about orcs and demons is becoming disappointingly low. Yes, the nature of man is steeped in evil, but where do the wizards come in? Thankfully, swords and sorcery are things Rochester’s Nazgul has in spades. Drawing clear influence from black metal titans like Emperor and Dissection, with a dash of Blind Guardianinspired power metal thrown in for good measure, Nazgul’s highly theatrical black metal is exceptional to experience. ROCHESTER
Pure marketing genius: celebrate 10 years in the local music business by playing a packed show, releasing a new EP, and then promptly breaking up. A brilliant move pulled by Rochester’s stratospheric rockers, The Goods. The Rochester foursome is saying adios with its latest and last, a four-song CD aptly named “Departure.” And if the band really has to go, it sure is on a nice, albeit short note. Front man Miles McHugh sings each song with a touch of casual and cool melancholy, while all of the authority comes from his guitar. The band’s easygoing jam keeps it in check, though, only occasionally letting the guitar off its leash to fly throughout “Departure.” For example, the track “Introspections” has a pleasant jam band lope to it, striking a perfect balance with the rhythm section’s lock-tight talent that hints at the rock ‘n’ roll animal in their hearts. On the surface this is a pleasant Sunday drive — below, however, lurks some seriously dangerous talent. — BY FRANK DE BLASE

Kat Wright’s “By My Side” is a beautiful record that finds the gal mixing it up while keeping her trademark soul burning beneath. The album kicks off classic and vintage with authenticity and respect, but by the time she makes it to the album’s fourth track, “You’ve Got Problems,” Wright begins to tap into ParliamentFunkadelic-style vocal layering. And you oughta check out the guitar on fire on “The Light” as it slithers and swirls in sonic chaos along with Wright’s voice. The Rochester-born Wright has never been a throwback; it’s just that she has a knack for writing songs that sound great and so goddamn classic. It’s like you’ve heard them before. This phenomenon is tempered by her pioneer spirit in writing and coloring outside the lines on “By My Side.” This ain’t what you’d call a period piece. As usual, her band is excellent as it gives Wright a deep world to wallow in, with a rock-steady soul drive peppered with plenty of tasty brass. SOUL/ROCK | MEG GEHMAN
If you think the Lindy Hop went out of style in the 1940’s, you haven’t been to a show featuring the Gregory Street Vagabonds. When the group hits the stage for the Abilene Holiday Party there’s bound to be some dancing. How can you resist when the group launches into the classics of America’s swing years? The holiday party also promises special guests and other surprises.
There is something comfortingly familiar about singer-songwriter Meg Gehman’s voice — smooth yet sultry, clear yet spunky. Gehman is an amalgam of some of music’s greatest and most enduring spirits, from Van Morrison to k.d. lang and Bonnie Raitt, with an accessible sound and plenty of tasty vocal hooks. Based in Rochester, Gehman also cites soul legends such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder as influences; on her latest album, “Leap,” there are generous helpings of R&B and soul.

With all of the exciting, newly acquired contemporary artworks going on display at the Memorial Art Gallery over the last couple of years, you might forget the institution also boasts an impressive collection of historic work. The MAG’s Lockhart Gallery is a space dedicated to showcasing delicate works on paper from the institution’s permanent collection, and is currently exhibiting a fascinating show of marvelous Indian miniature paintings. These vignettes of warmer climates provide a great opportunity to revel in the bright aesthetics and epic tales of Indian culture. The best 35 of the collection’s 62 paintings are on display, says curator Nancy Norwood. “I wanted them all to be of high quality and work together to tell a story.” Norwood worked with Charles Collins, a professor emeritus at RIT, to help identify narrative threads running through the pieces. The topics that emerged — Religious Faiths of India; Krishna and Rama as avatars of
Vishnu; Ragamala paintings (works depicting musical themes); and paintings of the court — are explored in text panels, under which the works are grouped. The tiny works are every bit as intricate and painstakingly made as the work in the Grand Gallery’s M.C. Escher exhibit. Viewers can use the provided magnifying glasses to get an intimate look at details that seem stroked onto the paper with a singlehair paintbrush, or study Radha’s expression as she shoos a Gopi away from Krishna. Although the paintings feel fresh in their vibrantly saturated color, some paint has chipped off and is missing here and there from segments of the works. This belies their age — the earliest piece exhibited is from about 1500, while the later ones are circa 1850. Most are from either the 17th or 18th centuries, Norwood says. Many of the Indian miniatures in the collection were too fragile for display — the paint was unstable, for example, or the paper was friable or torn. Norwood says the MAG typically displays four miniatures on rotation in the upstairs Asian gallery, but it was becoming more and more difficult to find any that had been off-view long enough to exhibit (the paintings are light-sensitive, and only exhibited once every five years for preservation reasons). “We worked with a paper conservator to evaluate and prioritize the paintings for treatment,” Norwood says. The MAG in 2013 applied for and in 2014 received a conservation
grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to treat 23 paintings that were of the highest priority. Once treatment was complete, a show of the pieces was planned for the Lockhart Gallery. “It was a terrific opportunity to both highlight these exquisite paintings and the importance of conservation,” Norwood says. “I felt it was important to celebrate their return to ‘health’ with a stand-alone show that also allowed us to contextualize them more than we could in the larger Asian gallery.” The majority of the MAG’s Indian Miniatures entered the collection in 1983 as a gift of Helen Reiff. Her husband, Robert, was a native Rochesterian and a graduate of the University of Rochester, and had a passion for Asian art, specifically Indian miniature paintings. Robert wanted the MAG to receive his collection after his death. The other miniatures entered the collection between 1928 and 1999 as gifts, purchases, or bequests. Among Norwood’s favorites of the displayed pieces is one depicting Shiva, Ardhanarishvara, created between 1750 and 1775. This particular manifestation of the deity illustrates his dual nature, most noticeably in the masculine-feminine split traits. “I think it is one of the most exquisite paintings in the exhibition,” Norwood says. “It also is probably the painting that helped me begin to understand the complexity and depth of the Hindu faith — much more than anything I read while preparing the exhibition. This idea of Shiva as the “Lord Whose Half is Woman,” as the unifier of opposites: life and death, creation and destruction, ascetic and erotic, and male and female allowed me to see many of the other paintings in a way that made sense. It’s also one of the most intense paintings in the exhibition — the elephants frolicking in the primordial waters are so joyful, and the duality of Shiva’s nature so vividly represented.” Norwood says she is also fascinated by the show’s intricate painting and drawing of composite elephants. In each of these works, the shape of a pachyderm is built from a menagerie of other beasts clinging to one another by tooth and nail. “The drawing in particular is exquisite,” she says, adding that the provided magnifying glasses are essential. “When you really look at the detail, the sheer skill of the artist is unbelievable. Animals are writhing around, chasing each other, blood on their mouths, all to make up an entire elephant. There’s something very, very eerie in those faces. I will always remember this drawing.” The Memorial Art Gallery will close at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve and reopen Wednesday, December 28. rochestercitynewspaper.com CITY 21

The locally written show “The Flight Before Christmas” is now on stage at Blackfriars Theatre. PHOTO BY DAN HOWELL
Now boarding “The Flight Before Christmas” REVIEWED FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16 CONTINUES THROUGH SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31 BLACKFRIARS THEATRE, 795 EAST MAIN STREET 7:30 P.M. ON WEDNESDAYS AND THURSDAYS; 8 P.M. The holidays come with a lot of pressure, and sometimes it’s a relief to escape the Ghost of Christmas Pending and sit in a quiet, dark theater with other frazzled humans. This year, Blackfriars Theatre chose to produce a locally written world premiere, “The Flight Before Christmas,” in place of a better known holiday show (in years past, the theater has produced “The Game’s Afoot, or Holmes for the Holidays,” “The Santa Land Diaries,” and “It’s a Wonderful Life”). “The Flight Before Christmas” follows the story of Flight 585 en route to — you guessed it — Rochester, New York, on Christmas Eve. Manned by alcoholinhibited pilot Deke Slider (a slimy-yetcharming John Forrest Thompson), the flight has an emergency crash landing, and only a handful of passengers survive. The narrator, of sorts, is flight attendant Carol 22 CITY DECEMBER 21-27, 2016
Dunbar (the always-commanding Kerry Young), who guides the show through various past and present vignettes. The show’s writers — Jeff Andrews, Young, and Abby DeVuyst — have roots in improvisational comedy as members of and writers for both the Canary in a Coal Mine and Unleashed! Improv troupes. Young and DeVuyst have also written and acted in sold-out Rochester Fringe Festival shows for the last few years. All three writers perform in “The Flight Before Christmas” as central characters. Perhaps because of the writers’ improv backgrounds, the show skews to that sort of feel. (At times it even felt as though the lines were being “written” on the spot.) No subject is off-limits — including dildos, Pittsford, drug trafficking, politics, cults, and a plastic surgery-induced coma. It’s not exactly a show that screams “familyfriendly,” but that was never promised. Including the writers, the seven-person cast is made up of several other improv performers — Thompson and Megan Mack of Thank You Kiss, and BJ Scanlon of Broken Couch — and actor Abby Kate Herron, who was recently seen in Blackfriars’ production of “Heathers” as Heather McNamara. For the most part, the ensemble is strong. Building a show from the ground up isn’t easy, and the group does an admirable job defining their roles when the nature of the script depicts caricatures rather than characters. Mack’s interpretation of a socially starved, manic scientist (a hat tip to “Lost” fans) is worth feeling sorry for, especially.
Andrews is the comedic center of the cast, both literally and figuratively, as he spends most of the show bound to an airplane seat center stage. His facial expressions translate to the furthest row in the theater, which plays nicely to his character’s histrionic range of emotions. As a Southern mama’s boy, Scanlon’s role is similar to a live action New Yorker cartoon mocking trust fund, playboy millennials. Opposite him is the codependent, malpracticing Dr. Quinn, played by an enthusiastic DeVuyst. Herron plays a cult sister wife with six first names — “Mary” for short — and wears a pregnant belly throughout the show because she’s about to give birth at any point, of course. Director Stephanie Roosa makes her Blackfriars debut with this production, and she also had a difficult task. There was no basis to build the show upon, although dramaturg Eric Evans’s notes are always insightful. The snow-covered set design by Eric Williamson, who previously designed “Assassins” and “Heathers” at Blackfriars, is fun to look at, especially the Velcro airplane and the “burning” airplane pieces. Props by John Engel and costumes by Kayleigh Yancey Barclay add to the “Survivor” feel of the set. To borrow an in-flight phrase, there’s a bit of turbulence in the two-hour period, but that’s to be expected with any brand new show. Most of this comes from two distinct sources: the show’s runtime — waning audience reactions attest to the fact that it could have been 15 or 20 minutes shorter — and the fact that the plot relies heavily on audience participation, which for some people is most unwelcome. Friday’s audience participants were largely good sports, especially “Tina,” who was so convincing that she should be considered for the show’s next run. After the show ended on Friday, a trio of patrons reacted on their way to the parking lot. “That was so funny.” “Really? I didn’t think it was that funny.” “I loved it!” The polarization of their comments speaks to the type of show “The Flight Before Christmas” is: it’s non-traditional, kind of like opening presents before Christmas or choosing to forego holiday decorations. Without providing any spoilers, it’s safe to say there’s no moral to this story, no angels getting wings, no midnight visits from spirits, no small hearts growing three sizes. And maybe that’s OK. Despite a few hiccups, this is a fun holiday show with no strings attached and no larger questions to ponder after it ends. Sometimes, that’s just what an audience needs.

SPECIAL EVENT | CHRISTMAS WITH ZAMIR
To set the stage for Kwanzaa 2016 (which kicks off with Umoja on Monday, December 26), the Baobab Cultural Center (728 University Avenue) will host a screening of “The Black Candle” on Friday, December 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. The 2008 documentary explores the struggles and triumphs of the African-American family, community, and culture, and is narrated by Maya Angelou and directed by professor, author, and filmmaker M. K. Asante. The film spotlights Kwanzaa as its main narrative thread, tracing the holiday’s roots in the Black Power Movement of the 1960’s to its expressions in the present day as a global, pan-African celebration of Black Pride with more than 40 million celebrants.
Once the glittery fresh snow turns to dirty slush, there’s still an opportunity to experience some seasonal sparkles. Head to Corning Museum of Glass (One Museum Way, Corning) to check out the sights and activities associated with its Glass Wonderland. Through January 3, the museum has on display a dazzling 14-foot tree decorated with hundreds of handmade glass ornaments. Also on display is a giant holiday “Glass Holiday Feast,” created by the Hot Glass Show team and featuring all manner of holiday meal stables. Throughout the season, the feast grows as gaffers add their favorite dishes to the table.
If you are a regular viewer of Anthony Bourdain’s show, “No Reservations,” then Zamir Gotta will be a familiar face. Bourdain’s Russian friend has made numerous appearances on the show and he typically takes Bourdain on some crazy adventure that culminates with a killer hangover. The folks at Honeoye Falls Distillery collaborated with Gotta to make Zamir Vodka, a Russian-style vodka that launched in the fall. Gotta will be returning to Honeoye Falls Distillery (168 West Main Street, Honeoye Falls) for a cocktail battle on Friday, December 23, from 6 to 9 p.m.
The museum also offers kid-friendly classes to make holiday and winter-themed projects, including glass ornaments, sculptures, and pendants. And children can participate in a Winter Wonders Gallery Hunt, seeking shapes inspired by the winter season like stars, boots, and holly.
Staff at the distillery will have a cocktail showdown using Zamir Vodka starting at 7 p.m., and Gotta will judge the competition. Full cocktail and food menus will be available until 11 p.m. Gotta will be signing bottles from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No ticket purchase necessary. 624-1700; honeoyefallsdistillery. com. form of Cassian’s droid and co-pilot K-2SO, voiced and performed with motion capture technology by Alan Tudyk. The Star Wars films have always been driven by character more than plot, and J.J. Abrams nailed that aspect in last year’s “The Force Awakens,” delivering a fresh cast of characters that audiences instantly connected with. Here we get a “Dirty Dozen” band of fighters made up of “spies, saboteurs, assassins.” These ground-level soldiers make a nice counterpoint to the prior installments larger-than-life heroes and Jedi, which could have added an interesting layer to the story, but the characters are all so thinly sketched that they barely register as people. We’re told that they’ve done terrible things for the sake of the cause, but any real questioning of what justifies the more extreme methods of resistance is quickly brushed aside in favor of more explosions. While the film suffers from pacing issues — the first 20 minutes feel like a planet-jumping travelogue, while the middle section drags — the film is most successful as a straight-up action movie. The entire last act is pretty terrific, filled with exciting, well-staged set pieces and plenty of the series’ distinctive outer space dogfights. There’s also a fantastic late scene involving Darth Vader that manages to bring real menace and fear back to the character. Despite the forgettable characters, there’s a resonant story about the sacrifice and heroism of a diverse band of rebels coming together against an all-powerful authoritarian regime. With its multicultural cast, it’s great to see this beloved franchise grow more and more diverse as the years go on — although it’s worth noting

that there has yet to be a woman of color in any significant role. Felicity Jones and Daisy Ridley of “The Force Awakens” have a certain physical similarity that hints that Disney may have decided there’s a specific type of female hero which audiences most respond to. Like “The Force Awakens,” “Rogue One” is littered with winking callbacks and references to earlier films in the series, and while some arise organically from the story, many more feel distracting and out of place. The creative team seems so intent to hold onto the original trilogy as an anchor that it’s impossible for them to pull up and go off in their own direction. Plans for this series of stand-alone films appear steeped in a sense of nostalgia rather than a desire to bring new stories to audiences eager to explore the Star Wars universe. Sure there’s a certain excitement in seeing the pieces fall into place, but by continuing to draw from the same well, there’s a possibility that over-explaining the original stories will ultimately dilute their power. That the next spin-off — scheduled for release in 2018 — will focus on the adventures of a young Han Solo does nothing to ease my fears. I’m excited to see stories set in this universe that incorporate a variety of genres and tones, but have nothing to do with the Skywalker family saga. With “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Disney has successfully launched both sides of its two-pronged reboot of the Star Wars cinematic universe, though it feels like this new series has yet to truly take off. Visit rochestercitynewspaper.com on Friday for additional film coverage, including a review of “Jackie.”

Vintage American Foursquare
339 Seneca Parkway Seneca Parkway is one of the Maplewood neighborhood’s loveliest streets. Beautiful houses of various architectural styles line this picturesque boulevard. While stately Tudors and beautiful Victorians abound on Seneca Parkway, the American Foursquare appears to be the street’s architectural style of choice. With its sloping hipped roof, third floor dormer, and overhanging eaves, the home at 339 Seneca Parkway is a fine example of this truly American style. The exterior features of this 1912 house are striking. The roofline has a unique bell shape, unusual for a Foursquare, and the black semicircular roof canopy atop the front door and the shutters contrast nicely with the cedar siding. A colorful garden parallels the front walk, and a climbing wisteria welcomes you in. Inside you notice the hallmarks of the Foursquare form--four rooms downstairs, four rooms upstairs, and an open top floor. Arts and Crafts style details such as a pocket French door in the vestibule, Craftsman staircase, and the built-in bookcase beside the tiled fireplace in the living room are all original to the house as are the chestnut moldings, oak floors, and the many leaded glass windows. Another pocket door separates the spacious living and dining rooms. And from the dining room, French doors open to a sun porch that overlooks the backyard. The kitchen area—a large space for a 1912 house— pantry, and bath complete the first floor.
Three generous-sized bedrooms are on the second floor, and each has its own closet. The larger master overlooks the front yard garden. French doors in one of the smaller bedrooms to the back of the house open to a screened sleeping porch. A tiled bath and built-in linen closet in the hall complete the second floor. While the first and second floors of the house maintain their 1912 period details, the top floor is now a modern space containing a bedroom, full bath, kitchenette, and a loft with exposed brick detail. The laundry and mechanics are in the basement, and outside the backyard is a lush garden. A two-car garage now serves as storage space. The Maplewood neighborhood is alive with community spirit. The active neighborhood association sponsors an annual festival in the Maplewood Rose Garden with arts and crafts, and, of course, roses. The neighborhood is close to the High Falls area of downtown and the Seneca Park Zoo to the north. It is served by the Rochester City School District, and Nazareth Academy and Aquinas Institute are nearby. The 2,999 square foot house is listed at $139,900 with taxes of $5,435. Suspicions Confirmed
Evolution, according to scientists, likely explains why some “prey” develop defense mechanisms to avoid “predators,” i.e., the prey who fail to develop them are unable to procreate (because they’re dead), but a team of scientists from Sweden and Australia recently concluded that something similar happens in a species of fish in which males mate basically by huge-appendaged rape. Growing nine generations of the species in the lab, the researchers concluded that the females who can avoid the “rapist” evolve larger brains than those who fall victim. (Researchers, loosely speaking, thus concluded that as males grow bigger penises, females grow bigger brains to outsmart them.)

Compelling Explanations
Texas is among the most enthusiastic states for jailing low-income arrestees who cannot pay a money bail, especially during devastating family hardships, and the four Houston bail magistrates are particularly harsh, according to a recent report of the Texas Organizing Project. After hearing one financially overwhelmed woman beg sarcastically that $1,000 bail is “nothing” next to her other bills, unsympathetic magistrate Joe Licata shrugged, “It’s nothing to me, either. It’s job security.”

Whistleblower goes to jail; responsible industry executives make millions. Long-time Mississippi environmental activist Tennie White is 27 months into a 40-month sentence (for “falsifying” three $150 tests in her laboratory), but high-ranking executives at the Kerr-McGee chemical conglomerate made millions on the case White helped expose: leakage of cancer-causing creosote into communities, including White’s Columbus, Mississippi, neighborhood. A detailed investigation by TheIntercept.com in November noted the executives’ brilliant response to the 25,000 creosote lawsuits nationwide: put all the liability into one outlying company (eventually going bankrupt) but
(1) When police in Port Orange, Florida, arrested Anthony Coiro, 76, in November, he admitted that he had a stash of “crazy” pornography, some featuring children. However, he adamantly insisted, “I’m not a pedophile. I’m just a pervert,” adding, “a law-abiding pervert.” He faces 52 counts. (2) In November in Osaka, Japan, an unnamed arrestee apparently had his sexual molestation charge (against a woman on a crowded train) dramatically downgraded. “Actually,” the man indignantly told the judge, he is not a pervert — but just a pickpocket (a lesser crime). The victim had testified that the man had brushed against her for “3 seconds” and not the “30” she originally told police.
[ LOVESCOPE ] BY EUGENIA LAST ARIES (March 21-April 19): Don’t let what someone says confuse you. If you feel a connection, follow through by making the first move. Romance is highlighted, and sharing an activity or getting involved in a cause you believe in with someone special will open the doorway to a closer relationship. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Don’t trust anyone with your heart. Settle for friendship until you have a clear background picture and an idea in what direction your partner of choice is heading. Play it safe, and you will have a better chance to eventually turn your current situation into a longlasting relationship.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You’ll attract lots of interest if you socialize. Spend downtime with a peer you find interesting, and you’ll find out how much you have in common. Speak from the heart, but be careful not to share too much too fast because of your professional connection. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Keep your life simple, especially when it comes to affairs of the heart. Trying to impress someone by overspending or displaying an exaggerated view of who you are and how you live will not lead to a happy ending. Use intelligence, wit and experience to entice someone who interests you.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You are hot and stand out. Let your swagger draw potential lovers to your side. It’s up to you to choose a partner who suits you, not the other way around. Business or festive events will result in plenty of opportunity to show off and impress someone on your radar. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You’ll feel limited when it comes to love. What you want and the stability and high standard you demand will lead to disappointment. Conduct a list of the qualities that mean the most to you, and realize that no one -- including you -- is perfect. Strive for compromise and equality.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Wear your heart on your sleeve and express your true feelings, and it will bring about a change in the way your relationship with someone unfolds. Honesty, open discussions and the willingness to give and take will help you excel when it comes to finding true love. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You’ll be attracted to people who come from backgrounds unlike yours. Don’t take a pass because of your differences. If you feel the chemistry, find out what interests you share and how you can combine what you both have to offer and form a working relationship.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You’ll shine when faced with a competitive situation. Let your glitter be what attracts someone who is smitten with you. Networking events, festive parties and sharing your colorful stories will lead to an encounter that will lead to an emotional high. Enjoy the moment and your good fortune. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Your emotions will get the better of you when it comes to an amorous encounter. Love at first sight is possible, but you are likely to find that it ends as quickly as it begins. You are best not to jump in too quickly. Express emotional reserve.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You’ve got the right moves to entice someone you’ve been eyeing. Make your pitch and leave no room for error. Love is in the stars now all you have to do is make it happen and keep the momentum going. If it feels right, don’t hesitate to make a commitment. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don’t be fooled by someone who pretends to be single. Ask pointed questions and lay your own baggage on the table to encourage honesty in return. Only then will you know how plausible it is to move forward. If not, move on to someone who has more to offer.
