ROCHESTER’S ROCK ‘N’ ROLL GLOBETROTTER ON THE ROAD WITH TOUR MANAGER RON MESH INTERVIEW, PAGE 12

DECEMBER 12 - 18, 2018

URBAN JOURNAL | BY MARY ANNA TOWLER

What is the mayor’s role in Rochester’s public schools? December’s turning out to be an unusually heavy news month, but one of the more interesting developments is Mayor Lovely Warren’s public input sessions on the Rochester school district. Warren has scheduled three of them: two especially for parents, at 6 p.m. December 13 and 17, and one for “community stakeholders,” at 3 p.m. December 17, all at City Hall. The purpose, Warren said in an invitation sent to parents and community representatives, is “to discuss how you believe City Hall can help Rochester’s children succeed.” In her invitation, Warren noted that city government has already been partnering with the school district in pre-school education and in helping provide “wrap-around services” at School 17. But Warren began her invitation by citing the recent report by the stateappointed Distinguished Educator, which criticized a lot of the district’s operations. Is Warren preparing to resurrect the idea of mayoral control of the district? Her chief of staff, Alex Yudelson, said late last week that he realizes some people will immediately jump to that conclusion. That’s not the intention, he said. Warren simply wants to hear the public’s concerns and ideas. But, he said, mayoral control “isn’t off the table.” Nothing, he said, is off the table. Warren talked a lot about education when she first ran for mayor in 2013. And while she said then that she wasn’t interested in mayoral control, she seemed to be considering having someone on her staff focus on education. So this isn’t a new interest. And it’s not inappropriate for a mayor to talk to the public about schools, and to ask for the public’s thoughts about them. In fact, mayors have good reasons to do exactly that. One of them is money. The school district and city government are two distinctly separate entities, each with its own elected officials, administrative staff, numerous employees, and budget. But the school district doesn’t raise its own money. Some of its money comes from state and federal governments (which, of course, get that money from state and federal taxpayers). But some also comes from city government, which gets it from city taxpayers. The school district submits its budget to City Council, which votes on it. But

The school district is in deep trouble. Is there a better way to operate the school system in this high-poverty city? Council doesn’t make decisions about individual allocations in the budget; it simply votes on whether to approve the whole thing or not. City government, then, has to raise money to help pay for the schools but has no say in what the district spends the money on. For decades, city officials have complained about the amount of money the city provides and about the school district’s operations. City officials also complain about something called the “Maintenance of Effort,” a state mandate that requires the city to provide a specific amount of money to the school district each year, regardless of the city’s financial condition. The school district is in deep trouble. Some of its problems are its own fault, but some aren’t. Is there a better way to operate the school system in this high-poverty city? When former Mayor Bob Duffy proposed mayoral control in 2010, it was highly controversial. Critics included not only the school board and the district’s unions but many parents. That’s not the only way city government can be involved in education, though, so Warren’s input sessions could provide an important service. What role should City Hall play in public education in Rochester? Warren’s meetings could help the community find answers. I hope they won’t simply be finger-pointing gripe sessions. rochestercitynewspaper.com

Blacks, whites, and racism

On December 3, a white friend of mine got in her car to go to work and discovered that her tires had been slashed and her “black lives matter” lawn sign had been stolen, along with a “black lives matter” car magnet. (Other magnets were not removed). This crime is another violent, racist aggression against black people, as well as an act of vandalism against a white person who supports anti-racist efforts. Whether the perpetrator was an angry individual or an organized hate group, the attempt to intimidate and silence people of color and their white allies was clear. Hateful narratives do not fit with values of basic human rights. When considering if and when she should replace her lawn sign, my friend acknowledged that her white privilege allows her to decide if she wants to avoid being a target of racially motivated violence. She recognizes that black people do not have that option; we are always at risk. The fact that black lives matter is not a 4 CITY

“belief.” One doesn’t “believe” that black lives are important; they simply are. One does not “believe” or “disbelieve” in climate change, because facts are not debatable. In recent years, a courageous group evolved the phrase “black lives matter” into a human-rights call to demonstrate that black lives are important. They did so because we continue to see black lives under- or unvalued in the United States. Throughout this incident, my friend has experienced a fraction of the intimidation and violence that people of color regularly endure. She described it to me as “eye-opening, humbling, and infuriating.” She was attacked for doing the one thing white people are not supposed to do: acknowledging racism. This is a call to white people to stay vigilant and vocal against racist overtures and microaggressions. Visit and “like” the Facebook page “Rochester antiracist efforts” to follow local events dealing with the dismantling of white supremacy. Support antiracist action with your time and your dollars. One can only be an ally of people of color when they serve and take direction in anti-racist efforts. Every day my friend and other white people continue to benefit from white privilege; instead of hiding behind that privilege, use it to fight white supremacy. MERCEDES PHELAN

An arts fund? For what?

I’m confused by CITY’s article “Arts Support: Beyond a Big-Show Theater.” What do you mean when you refer to “1 percent for art?” Assessed by whom? On what projects? Does the 1 percent include special project design? Why or why not? If the project is of the highest creativity and design (which should be the basic mandate of every project), must it also pay the extra 1 percent to the public coffer? To be used how? Who decides? Are you supporting purchases of objects? Can older pieces be sold to raise funds? Who pays for maintenance and care of public art pieces already owned by the city or county? What if the project is small, and 1 percent only amounts to a few dollars? Must a committee

or appointee search for “bargain” art to adhere to budgets or could the money be banked toward larger goals? Will the 1 percent pay for a complete inventory of “public art” pieces in our county? To what goal? A book? A brochure? Publicly available literature or web site? Maintained by whom? Is there a “public art” commissioner? A spokesperson within the travel and tourist industry who champions Rochester public art? On city staff? At the Memorial Art Gallery? At the Chamber of Commerce? Is this person paid a salary? What credentials? Does the 1 percent pay that expense? What kind of “public art” are you talking about? Only objects? Only wall coverings? What about performance? Isn’t the Fringe Festival, broadly speaking, a public art

performance piece? What about the jazz festival? What about financial support of art organizations? Does 1 percent pay for that, too? If I wanted to leave a bequest to a public art fund, how would I do that? To whom? What if I simply bought my own piece of public art and found a place on Main Street for installation? Would that be OK? In that case, am I liable for any damages to property or persons? When the property gets sold, who owns the artwork? Before you begin the topic, some of us need clarity. Spaull hosting meeting on arts needs

City Council member Elaine Spaull is convening a meeting of Rochester arts organizations on Friday, open to anyone who wants to attend. The broad purpose, she said Tuesday, is to discuss their needs and the contribution of the arts to the area’s quality of life, using a recent report on the arts as a starting point. The meeting will be held at the Arts and Cultural Council Center, 31 Prince Street, at 4 p.m. Spaull had initially invited a small group of arts representatives who had attended previous meetings during the debate about a theater for the Rochester Broadway Theatre League on Parcel 5. As word of Friday’s meeting spread on social media, however, some arts representatives complained that they were being excluded, and Spaull opened the meeting to all arts groups. The Friday event’s purpose, Spaull said in a press release issued last night, is to “review the AMS Study that was conducted in May 2018.” That study, commissioned by Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren, looked primarily at how new large performance venues in several other cities had

impacted the funding and audience for other arts organizations. But the AMS study also cited ways other cities had provided ongoing funding for a broader group of local arts organizations. People who aren’t able to attend the Friday meeting but want to comment can email Spaull at elaine. spaull@cityofrochester.gov., her press release said.

School board names interim superintendent

Daniel Lowengard, the interim superintendent who briefly led the Rochester school following the departure of former superintendent Bolgen Vargas, is returning to the district for a second time as interim. Linda Cimusz, who has also served as Rochester’s interim superintendent, will be his chief of staff. They’ll start work on February 1. Lowengard was hired to temporarily take over for Vargas in January 2016, but he suffered from a stroke shortly afterward, and the district then hired Cimusz for the interim position. The two had worked together in the Syracuse school district prior to coming to Rochester. In other school district news, last week the school board agreed to hire a search firm to find a permanent superintendent.

EDUCATION | BY TIM LOUIS MACALUSO

‘Struggling’ schools are improving All nine Rochester schools that the state has classified as “struggling” or “persistently struggling” made significant improvement during the 2017-2018 school year, according to the State Education Department. The department placed the nine in “receivership” in 2015 after their students continued to struggle. The schools are School 3, School 8, School 9, School 17, School 45, East Lower, East Upper, Monroe High, and Northeast College High School. When a school is placed in receivership, the district has to submit an improvement plan to the state education commissioner with specific goals that have to be reached within a

specified time. In 2015, 14 Rochester schools were in receivership. Since then, some of the others have been closed, and some improved enough to move out of receivership. This is the first year that all of the Rochester district’s receivership schools have shown improvement, says Carlos Garcia, a spokesperson for the district. The improvements are the result of increased resources, instruction time, and parent engagement at each school, says Elizabeth Mascitti-Miller, deputy superintendent of city schools. In addition, teacher supervision and accountability has been intense at the schools, she says. Two of the receivership schools,

Monroe High School and School 9, concerned school officials most. About 65 percent of Monroe’s students are English language learners and receive special education services. And 50 percent of School 9’s students are English language learners. But both schools showed improvement, says Mascitti-Miller. The biggest challenge is improving the schools enough to get them moved out of receivership and keeping them out, Mascitti-Miller says. Although the nine on the current list are improving, they’re still in receivership, and school officials expect that a new group of schools will be placed in receivership in January.

El Sauce hasn’t seen the unrest that spurred a US State Department travel advisory to Nicaragua. But the warning resulted in some local groups suspending their charitable work in El Sauce; to get there they have to travel through Managua, the capital and a center of conflict.

CHARITY | BY JEREMY MOULE

Aid groups refocus after Nicaragua unrest Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the West, a status due to factors that include natural disasters and decades of political strife, at times fueled by US intervention. Several organizations based in or deeply connected to the Rochester region help the people of Nicaragua by providing funding, services, and volunteers for such efforts as developing businesses and building houses and schools. The organizations, and Rochester generally, have had a particularly tight relationship with El Sauce, a community of 30,700 located in the northwest part of Nicaragua. For example, Metro Justice’s Ciudad Hermana Task Force has worked in El Sauce for 30 years, providing loans to farmers and women starting businesses, giving scholarships to elementary school students, and sending groups of people to work on humanitarian projects. But a US State Department advisory about travelling to Nicaragua has complicated some of those organizations’ efforts. The travel advisory is based on political unrest in the country. In April, people flooded streets in Nicaragua’s cities to protest President Daniel Ortega’s plan to raise social security taxes and cut benefits to seniors. Protests against Ortega and his administration have continued, and police

have responded with brutal, sometimes deadly force El Sauce hasn’t seen any of the protests or conflicts, but you can’t get to the outlying community from the US without travelling through the capital of Managua, which has been a center of conflict, leaders of the Rochester-area groups say. Enlace Project (enlaceproject.org), which started through SUNY Geneseo, is responding to the situation by refocusing its efforts, says co-founder Kellan Morgan. When it was founded, the organization worked work with El Sauce businesses and cooperatives to help them grow and provide economic opportunities in the community. It’s also helped artisans and farmers find buyers for their products internationally, and in Rochester specifically, Morgan says. The organization plans to continue its community-based economic development work through things such as microloans and scholarships, which can be administered remotely. Enlace’s board decided to suspend the organization’s service learning, study abroad, and volunteer trip programs, Morgan says. It had been arranging the programs for several local colleges and universities, including Geneseo, RIT, Keuka College, and SUNY Upstate Medical University.

That decision means a loss of funding for some of Enlace Project’s on-the-ground charitable and community-building work, Morgan says. It had to close its offices in El Sauce, he says. Another local organization, 4Walls Project, has been helping the people of El Sauce build houses, and it’s arranged for groups of volunteers to travel to the community and assist with the construction. It’s partnered with groups from Hilton, Geneseo, and Dansville high schools; Allendale Columbia School; RIT; and Keuka College. Typically, the groups raise money to build two or three houses as part of the trip, says Colleen Dunham, a member of 4Walls’ board. The organization has helped fund and build 145 houses in El Sauce since 2007. But no groups have wanted to go since the travel advisory went into effect in April, which means funding for new houses has dropped, Dunham says. And she fears that if volunteers can’t or won’t travel to El Sauce, the lasting connections that have developed between people there and in the Rochester community will wither. “The thing that makes it thrive is the connection,” Dunham says. However, the people of El Sauce can still build houses without the volunteers, say 4Walls leaders. The houses were always built

The 4Walls Project had been sending volunteers to help build homes in El Sauce, Nicaragua, until the US State Department issued an advisory cautioning against travelling to the country. PHOTO PROVIDED

using materials sourced in El Sauce, and masons from the community were hired for the brickwork, they say. But the residents still need money for the labor and materials; each house costs around $2,000. The group’s co-founder, Bonnie Yannie, put together a photo journal documenting how the people of El Sauce and the local volunteers work together, which she’s selling for $12 a copy. Proceeds will go to the 4Walls Project, as will any additional donations. The book is available at http:// journeysofsolutions.org/our-projects/4-wallsproject-nicaragua.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS | BY MARY ANNA TOWLER

Douglass descendants moving legacy project here Frederick Douglass, one of the most important figures in the nation’s history, spent 25 years here, continuing his abolitionist efforts, helping raise a family, meeting with women’s suffrage leaders, and founding his influential North Star newspaper. He bought property here, lived here, and chose to be buried here, in Mt. Hope Cemetery. And yet there is no museum dedicated to his life and works, no restored home serving as a continuing link to him, no physical base where people can learn more about him and look for ways to further his legacy. Sometime within the year, though, that may begin to change. The Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives, a nonprofit committed to carrying out the legacy of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington, will leave its base in Atlanta and move to Rochester. The Initiative’s three founders – Kenneth Morris, the great-great-great grandson of Douglass; his mother, Nettie Washington Douglass (who is a descendant of both Douglass and the influential educator Booker T. Washington), and Robert Benz, a longtime family friend – are looking for a location in Rochester. And while they’re not planning to create a museum, they do want a place where they can stage exhibits as well as hold forums, conferences, meetings, and lectures and continue their efforts in areas in which he devoted his adult life. Benz will move from his home in Las Vegas to Rochester to lead the organization’s work here. Morris, Douglass, and Benz were in Rochester last week as part of the two-day celebration of Douglass’s life. While they were here, they announced their decision to move the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives to Rochester. And during an interview with CITY, the three discussed their plans. The Initiative’s site will be “a place to better understand who Douglass was,” Benz said. But it will also be a place to further the Initiative’s efforts in addressing contemporary issues, to educate and agitate and work for change. Currently, the Initiatives’ principal focus is human trafficking, a form of slavery that continues to be a concern around the world, including in the United States. That’s been the focus since Morris, Benz, and Douglass founded the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives in 2007. The catalyst for their interest: a National Geographic article on contemporary slavery and human trafficking. 8 CITY

The issue seemed a natural one for descendants of Frederick Douglass to address. What concern would Frederick Douglass be involved with if he were alive today? “The obvious answer is human trafficking,” Benz said. Morris and Benz also found that efforts related to human trafficking were “reactive,” helping the victims. No one was working on prevention, and that became the focus of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives. The organization has developed a curriculum for schools and has launched programs to educate children and teachers: teaching them how to recognize and prevent human trafficking. But, Morris said, “all of the social justice issues are intertwined.” And so, he said, “we’ve started to delve into other issues.” Among them: mass incarceration. You can draw a direct line, Morris said, from slavery in the United States “through Jim Crow to mass incarceration.” Expanding the FDFI’s mission is consistent with Douglass’s own experience. During his time in Ireland, the poverty and oppression he saw there influenced him heavily and contributed

to his own broadening of interests to include women’s suffrage. “We have always had in our minds that we would be an organization that was focused on more than just one issue,” Morris said. The press release announcing the FDFI’s move to Rochester had emphasized the importance of bringing its work to the city in which Douglass had lived and worked. And it quoted Nettie Washington Douglass: “When I stand in this city that my great-great grandfather called home and chose as his final resting place, I realize that all Rochester residents are heir to his legacy and members of the Douglass family. Rochester is where his legacy will continue to live. I think together we can make great things happen here.” The press release also quoted Benz as saying that the Initiative would address “specific challenges facing this community.” Morris, Douglass, and Benz will find plenty of “specific challenges” in Rochester, racism and criminal justice among them. “We’re not coming in as the solution,” Morris said. But in whatever areas they become

involved in, they’ll likely do the kinds of things they’ve already been doing out of their Atlanta base, they said. For instance, as part of their celebration of the 200th anniversary of Frederick Douglass’s birth, they’re working with American University’s Antiracist Research and Policy Center on a project they call the FD200, honoring 200 people who they believe are carrying out Douglass’s legacy in their own work. The FDFI has worked with high school students to do webcasts on gun violence. It has worked with middle school students to do webcasts about education. And the organization’s efforts emphasize both education and service – not only teaching students but empowering them, educating them “and then encouraging them to agitate,” Benz said. Initiatives staff and partners help teach students about an important contemporary issue and then encourage them to attend local government meetings to press for legislation. “We hope to raise a new generation of leaders,” Morris said.

Chortke’s spicy joojeh plate features grilled chicken and tomato over saffron basmati rice. Below, Saffron pistachio ice cream. PHOTOS BY JACOB WALSH

Persian palate [ REVIEW ] BY JAMES A. BROWN

Nestled in the concrete expansion of the Village Gate complex is Chortke (pronounced Chort-K), a new Persian restaurant owned by Yasha Aghdasi and his wife Rana Rezaei. The word Chortke, is Farsi for abacus, which bears a strong resemblance to the shish kabob. Shish is “six” in Farsi, and the owners say that traditional shish kabobs feature six pieces of meat on a skewer. Kabobs are the backbone of the restaurant’s menu. A hybrid of a kabob and abacus is featured in its logo, proudly perched above its doorway. The couple say they purposely chose Rochester’s hopping Neighborhood of the Arts for Chortke because of its central location, diversity, and openness to new food concepts. Chortke serves classic Perisan fare presented in a “fast casual Chipotle-style,” which means all orders are taken at the counter and there’s no table service. Each visit to Chortke begins with a simple question: what plate will be the foundation of your meal: Rice, salad, half rice-half salad (the most popular with customers), or a wrap?

Rice plates are simple, filling, hardy, and inexpensive at just $10.49. The dish starts with an expensive twist: saffron imported from Iran. This ingredient adds a rich flavor and a lemon-yellow hue to its basmati rice, which is centered on a bed of classic off-white basmati rice. The rice is the foundation for a spicy chicken plate, also known as spicy joojeh plate. The joojeh was grilled to perfection with the predictable but gorgeous blend of black seared edges, glistening golds, oranges, and browns speckling both the meat and a grilled tomato. And Chortke’s charcoal grill adds a smoky hint to the meat and tomatoes.

Pro-tip: mash the grilled tomatoes into the basmati rice. You won’t be disappointed. Other highlights include Chortke’s delicious flatbread, homemade eggplant yogurt and hot sauce, and its saffron pistachio ice cream. “It smells like my grandfather’s house,” Persian patron Karlie Holt told me on a recent visit. Holt was born in the province of Isfahan in rural Iran but moved to San Diego as a child. She’s currently an undergraduate at the University Rochester, and is headed to the university’s med school next fall. Holt visited Chortke three times with four different friends. This time, Rana greeted her in Farsi. “It’s nice to be greeted in Farsi and speak my native language,” Holt said, beaming. “The rice is incredibly authentic.” After a soft launch late last summer, Chortke is still very much a work in progress. Its look and décor are handpicked by Rana while Yasha continues to tweak the business model. The space has a high ceiling and large windows that look out toward the parking lots behind Village Gate and Anderson Street. The room is spotless, sparse, and typically filled with echoing Persian instrumental music. And there’s plenty of

seating even at the busiest times of the week. The owners take turns manning the counter and cooking. They expect to add staff, lower the ceiling, expand the menus, and add art and more home-y touches. Chortke is also planning a revamped website with online ordering and delivery options. For Chortke speed matters. My first visit to Chortke was on a lunch break with a friend, and the owners inquired about how long it took us to be served. It took between 10 and 15 minutes which the owners say is a little longer than normal, and that they’re attempting to shave serving times to under eight minutes. This goal is counter to classic Perisan dining, which Yasha describes as a slower, longer process of dining, discussion, and lounging. They’re also in the process of accommodating lengthier stays at the restaurant by adding a Persian café with a full suite of Middle Eastern coffees and teas. Classic Persian dining is something the Aghdasis know well. Yasha was born in Tehran, Iran and moved to Columbia, Maryland with his family in 1998. His uncle had migrated from Iran to Maryland in 1964, and his aunt moved there after the Iran Hostage crisis in the early 80’s. As a teenager, Yasha worked at his father’s Persian restaurant and watched him open 18 more locations. His father was a taskmaster. “I forgot to sanitize a pot, and he said ‘take your apron and go home,’” Yasha says. His father’s stern approach taught him to do things right the first time. Yasha says he was determined to top his father, and he and a business partner launched gold-buying kiosks in malls. In all, Yasha opened 30 locations in New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Economic pressures from the recession led to him closing the kiosks one by one. The last locations were in Rochester, and Yasha manned the last days of his last kiosk in Eastview mall near the Apple store. That’s when he met Rana. “She was walking in the mall with a mutual friend and I stopped them,” he says. “I asked her if she was Indian. She said no.” Today, Yasha can laugh about it. Rana moved to Rochester from Tehran to pursue a graduate degree in Industrial Design at RIT. The two have been attached ever since. he circus-on-wheels that is a rock show is coming to Anytown, USA, in all its reckless calamity. So get down. Look out. But before the first salacious slash across the guitar strings delights shrieking fans, there is a mile-high pile of logistics to contend with in order for this circus to function. It’s the job of the tour manager to cowboy the herd and get the band on stage. It’s the job of one Ron Mesh. Since the late 1980’s, this Rochester native has trotted the globe non-stop. Mesh is never in one place for too long. He’s always heading to the next city, the next show. When we interviewed Mesh for this story, he had just come off a tour he did with ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons and was at LAX on his way to a week of Tower of Power gigs in Hawaii. Mesh is surrounded by rock stars like the band Kings of Chaos, which includes Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, and Slash of Guns N’ Roses. But the man ain’t starstruck. He doesn’t have any snapshots or excited selfies of him and the artists he works with. “I just never got around to it,” Mesh says. “Maybe shyness? You’re working so closely and you’re friends with everyone; it’s always just seemed weird.” Mesh started out as a sound engineer in the 1980’s earning his bones at clubs in Rochester like Backstreets, Milestones, BK Lounge, X, and Jazzberry’s, where he mixed popular bands of the day like The Essentials, The Colorblind James Experience, The Chesterfield Kings, Uncle Sam, and The Frantic Flattops. “And you can’t forget the GaragePop bands like The Quitters, Dog’s Life, Koo Koo Boy,” he says. “Eventually bands would request me, and I would work more and more nights as things were building up until I moved to LA in 1999.” It was Rochester garage rock heroes The Chesterfield Kings that really lit Mesh’s flame. “Andy [Babiuk, The Chesterfield Kings’ bassist] and I had a lot of mutual friends in high school,” Mesh says. “We used to go check out The Kings on weekends when they played at Scorgies.” Mesh discovered they were touring surrounding cities like Toronto, New York City, and Cleveland, and wanted to be part of the action. “I started working with them mostly for the love of travel, but quickly figured out there was more to it, and if I could figure it out I might be able to get a real job out of this and keep traveling. This is where it all started. I’ve traveled the world with them, and Andy is still one of my best friends to this day.”

with the up-and-coming Maroon 5. It was clear to Mesh and those involved that the band was destined to be huge. Mesh moved to Beverly Hills briefly before relocating to Venice Beach and living there for 16 years. “As the Maroon 5 thing was building, I loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly,

literally,” Mesh says. And though he currently has a sweet pad in Palm Springs, Mesh still refers to Rochester as home and California as more of a logistical necessity. “I’ve always called Rochester home, though,” he says, “and kept close contact with all of my family and friends.” Having bought a house in Irondequoit in 2011 and staying local while between tours, he now spends equal time in Rochester and Palm Springs. Tour managing ain’t easy, according to Mesh, who encounters people who want to take a stab at it after watching Mesh effortlessly do the voodoo that he does so well. “They see me having fun and they think that’s all there is to it,” Mesh says. “But you’ve got to keep everybody on time, keep everything together; you have to juggle the press, accounting, meeting budgets. The whole game is coming in under budget. Keep touring, making sure everyone comes home with some money. There are logistics: whether we’re going to take a private jet or fly commercial, travel by bus – those are all my decision.” Mesh says the easiest part of his job is when the band takes the stage. “Nobody’s calling me, or texting me,” he says. “I’ve got two hours to myself. But that’s when I get paid, get accounting done, ticket audits, stuff like that.” Gone are the days of groupies, destroyed hotel rooms, “no brown M&M’s,” and blow. Mesh doesn’t have to babysit or post bail. “Now,” he says, “everything is so easy. Billy Gibbons’ rider is 12 Modelo beers, Diet Coke, tomato soup, kombucha, almonds. No crazy requests with stuff like in the 80’s. With the Kings of Chaos, the whole band is sober. Now it’s a tea kettle, a good cup of coffee.” Mesh makes touring sound like a healthy enterprise. “But on the road, I’m the first one up and the last one to bed,” he says.

2017 Steel Panther US/ Canadian Tour 2006 Steve Tyler Asian Tour 2017 Evanescence European Tour

However, things can get a little dicey, like the time Mesh landed with the Kings of Chaos in Peru, faced with over a thousand screaming fans and only one bodyguard to manage the crowd. “I was getting off the plane with them in Lima, Peru,” Mesh says. “We landed in the general terminal and I’m walking off the plane with Slash and Joe Elliott, Duff McKagan, Steven Tyler, and there’re 1,200 people there to mob the band. We had one bodyguard. We were supposed to have eight more but they weren’t in the same part of the airport we were. It was a miscommunication on their part. Yeah, that was pretty shaky.” Mesh is in-demand, he says, because he handles situations like that with a cool head and adheres to the bottom line. “I’m always looking to save the band money without cutting corners,” he says. “Coming in under budget is always a good thing, and a good way to get called back for another tour.” When Mesh comes home to Rochester, it’s like an

invasion, a shopping spree, a covert homecoming. During east coast tours, Mesh and company would frequently take a detour in Rochester, with the tour bus dropping them off at Mesh’s or his parents’ home in the middle of the night. Friends would then come by with plenty of local favorites like Richmond’s wings and Genesee Beer. But the boost to the local economy wouldn’t end there. “We would make a master plan,” Mesh says. “In the morning we would have friends call in sick, have Shuffles Limo send over a couple cars.” The itinerary would include visits to House of Guitars, Record Archive, and The Bop Shop, as well as stops for yoga, golf, coffee and jewelry. “I even had a client buy a new 700-plus-horsepower Shelby Mustang from Vision Ford and ship it home,” Mesh says.

2017 Blondie 2017 - Present Tower of Power 2018 - Present Billy F. Gibbons

The celebrities rarely got spotted, though Mesh remembers the time pop punk band Mest was noticed by some neighborhood kids through the window at his parents’ house. “The guys went outside and turned it into a rap battle under the streetlights for two hours,” Mesh says. “Some of the Bay Street kids were good. I hope they’re out there somewhere killing it right now.” It’s mind-blowing when you consider the people involved in all of Mesh’s endeavors, on and off the road. Billy F. Gibbons spent Thanksgiving at Mesh’s house this year, Blondie’s Debbie Harry convinced Mesh he looks distinguished with more white in his hair, and he once went on safari in Africa with members of Guns N’ Roses. “When they played in South Africa,” Mesh says, “it was the first time they had been on stage together, without Axel, in something like 23 years. Talk about your unbelievable moments.” And the rock ‘n’ roll machine rocks and rolls on. Mesh lays out a list. “I’m continuing with Tower of Power’s 50th anniversary world tour.” he says. “There’s a new band I’m taking on a 2019 summer festival tour of Europe called Deadland Ritual, with Geezer Butler, Matt Sorum, Steve Stevens, and Franky Perez. And there are more dates with Gibbons.” Thrilling thought it may be to rub elbows with so many of the rock ‘n’ roll elite, Rochester still gives Mesh that hometown thrill, even when he’s cruisin’ Hollywood. “I was driving down Sunset Boulevard and I saw a sign for Coachella with Joywave – the Fuego kids – on it,” he says. “I knew they worked at the coffee shop, but I didn’t know they were in a band. And I’m like, ‘There’s the kids from the coffee shop.’” rochestercitynewspaper.com CITY 13

and the Rochester Oratorio Society, rather daringly, are going secular this holiday season with Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” No stars or mangers here: this “scenic cantata” is based on medieval poetry celebrating the joys of drinking ale, eating roasted swans, and generally carrying on, under the watchful eye of the goddess Fortuna. Pagan it may be, but “Carmina Burana” has been one of classical music’s greatest hits since 1937. This concert will also include one last nod to Leonard Bernstein’s centenary this year with the jazzy, lyrical “Chichester Psalms.”

‘Soul Passenger’ Self-released soulpassenger.com

Soul Passenger’s eponymous debut disc is so clean it squeaks. It’s a really straight-forward groove, with augmented jazz in spots to keep the listener guessing. Regardless, it’s a solid sender. More surprises come further down the track listing with the band’s stab at reggae on “Are You Satisfied.” And though I’m generally opposed to covers, they can still offer some insight into what initially turned the band on. I just got “Soul Passenger” and I’ve already got favorites, including “You’ve Got to Be Cool to Be Cool.” Complete with its swingin’ lounge lizard breakdown midway through, the track stars sax man Vince Ercolamento and the southwestern bop that brings to mind Sailor and Lula on the lamb. Music CITY: My introduction to you was as a member of the Jon Lewis Band. Do you feel like you live two separate musical lives? Alex Northrup: I would say, “No, it’s not a

separate musical life,” ‘cause I think a lot of the things that I’m, we’ll say, a sideman in, they’re not too far off of what I like and what I would be doing anyway. For a long time, I preferred doing that, ‘cause, you know: stage fright and all that not-so-fun stuff. I’d just sit in the back, or sit off to the side, and do my thing. And I think when Northern Spies ended, I was pretty relieved at not having to be the front guy anymore. Would it be accurate to say that the music you do now with Alex Northrup and the Backup is kind of like taking the retro-60’s vibe you bring to the Jon Lewis Band and putting it front-and-center?

I think I learned a lot from being in that group, just different things about how to put five people with completely different influences together, and the sound that comes out of it – just how to work together on things. That was a very fortunate experience to have. Still have, still going on. What is your relationship to your musical influences, in terms of the writing of a song? [ INTERVIEW ] BY DANIEL J. KUSHNER

It’s been a little less than two years since multiinstrumentalist Alex Northrup released his solo album, “The Great Mundane.” But back in January 2017, he was still the frontman of Northern Spies. Having only given out a handful of physical copies to close friends, and with no promotion of the album, “The Great Mundane” went into hibernation. In the meantime, Northrup has also been the keyboardist in Jon Lewis Band, playing alongside drummer Jacob Walsh (disclosure: Walsh is a graphic designer for CITY Newspaper), a mainstay on the sessions from “The Great Mundane.” Following the May release of its own album “Get Wild Somewhere,” produced by its bassist Dave Drago, Jon Lewis Band quieted down for the remainder of 2018.

And with a less intensive schedule, Northrup and Walsh decided to move forward and play shows featuring the former’s once-dormant solo material. With the addition of former Northern Spies bassist Andrew Carter to their ranks, Alex Northrup and the Backup was born, and with it a throwback rock sound that manages to feel both faithfully vintage and utterly original. The trio is currently working on what will probably be an EP release this winter. In advance of the band’s two upcoming concerts at The Spirit Room and Small World Books, Alex Northrup recently spoke about Jon Lewis Band’s impact on The Backup and the surprising source of Northrup’s songwriting inspiration. An edited version of the interview follows.

I don’t know. It’s changed over the years, I guess, depending on the influences. This was a thing I learned from playing in Jon Lewis Band, just how to craft songs. ‘Cause I saw that he and Dave were very quick to just come up with these hooky things. Very simple, hooky things. And, you know, I was always a very slow worker. I’d labor over things. I wouldn’t even show it to someone until I was like, “This is absolutely 100 percent. This is as far as I could get it.” I think that showed me that you can come with an idea, and not really labor over it; and just kind of take it as it is, and bring it to other people, have them throw their thing on top of it. There seems to be some sort of dialogue between classic rock music and a contemporary indie sensibility, and I’m wondering how you navigate that. Is it just what naturally comes out of you?

Yeah. I don’t listen to much modern music, like current indie rock. Growing up, even all the way back to a little guy, it was never what everyone else was listening to. I found this other stuff through the radio my parents were listening to, their record collection. So what were you listening to?

Buffalo Springfield, Neil Diamond. Neil Diamond is what got me into this.

Central showcase “Emergence” THROUGH JANUARY 20, 2019 RIT CITY ART SPACE, 280 EAST MAIN STREET THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY, 1 TO 5 P.M. FREE | CITYARTSPACE.RIT.EDU [ REVIEW ] BY REBECCA RAFFERTY

Rochester Institute of Technology’s satellite art space, gallery r, closed its College Avenue doors at the start of the summer, and has been replaced by City Art Space, located in the Sibley Building. Just steps from the Liberty Pole, the gallery is making excellent use of a former retail space on the first floor, and is marking an exciting trend of increased art spaces in the city’s center. The space came together quickly. It opened almost exactly one year from when organizers first looked at the space. Carpeting and drop ceilings were torn out in favor of the sparse, industrial look of cement floors and exposed ducts and pipes. Gallery lighting was installed, along with modular white walls to expand the exhibition real estate. 20 CITY DECEMBER 12 - 18, 2018

The new gallery’s downtown location gives the creative culture of RIT a more prominent space in the center of the city, and potential for increased community programming, says director John Aäsp. Aäsp adds that like gallery r, the new space will showcase work by faculty, students, and alumni, and it will still serve as an experiential learning hub for undergraduate and graduate students in gallery management. But it will also highlight community collaborations and the melding of social benefit with design, he says. And RIT interior design students had a hand in the look of the space as well, Aäsp says. The students were asked to design for flexibility, and the architects used students’ input to begin the design process. City Art Space’s inaugural show, “Emergence,” features work by RIT professors Leonard Urso and Willie Osterman. Each have taught at the school for more than 30 years, but recently realized they had never talked with each other about their work, Aäsp says. Through subsequent conversations and studio visits, they discovered common threads in their work including mark making and visual mythologies.

The wide open space gives visitors ample room to navigate installations of large works, and the huge storefront windows allow passersby to view almost the entire show. Urso’s work is monumental, whether it’s fabricated metal hands and heads that bring to mind Greek or Roman ruins of gargantuan sculptures, or his large-scale paintings of obsessively scrawled words carved into paint. One such painting, “Wilderness,” is a tangled patch of the word repeated and layered, like brambles resisting the order of a garden, the work looking like a punk band’s album art. Rows and stacks of Osterman’s murky tintypes of masks create a feeling of an inscrutable pantheon’s presence. A wide variety of expressions are captured in these portraits, from fearful to fanged and fearsome. Installed on one tall wall is a series of ambrotypes that together roughly form a body. And each panel includes a few translucent layers, giving a disorientingly dimensional effect to viewing the torso, hands, and other parts as you walk past the work. THEATER | ‘A CHRISTMAS CAROL’

‘Tis the season for a redemptive tale about an unfettered capitalist who, scared witless by ghosts, becomes a kind-hearted benefactor (though not frightened enough to become a socialist). Charles Dickens’s classic, moralizing novella, “A Christmas Carol” has given us unforgettable characters in Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, and The Ghosts of Christmas (Past, Present, and Future), and the play has become a holiday staple on Rochester stages. Geva Theatre Center’s production was adapted by Artistic Director Mark Cuddy, and the show features music and lyrics by Gregg Coffin. “A Christmas Carol” continues through December 29 at the Wilson Stage, Geva Theatre Center, 75 Woodbury Boulevard. Film

Emma Stone in “The Favourite.” PHOTO COURTESY FOX SEARCHLIGHT

Loyalty & royalty “The Favourite” (R), DIRECTED BY YORGOS LANTHIMOS OPENS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14 [ PREVIEW ] BY ADAM LUBITOW

The world seen through the lens of a Yorgos Lanthimos film is one of equal parts cruelty and absurdity. The mind behind bleak, pitch-black comedies like “Dogtooth,” “The Lobster,” and “Killing of a Sacred Deer,” Lanthimos is fascinated by the darker aspects of human behavior, even as he maintains a certain empathy for the poor souls who indulge in them as a means to operate within (and sometimes against) a stiflingly structured society.

“The Favourite” continues the pattern, though it’s in many ways the filmmaker’s most accessible movie yet. Set in 18th century England as the country is at war with France, the film centers around the unstable and ailing Queen Anne (Olivia Colman). Her closest companion and confidante is Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz), duchess of Marlborough, who wields her influence to alter the course of the war to her own benefit. Their intimate, mostly symbiotic relationship is complicated with the arrival of Sarah’s cousin Abigail (Emma Stone), an aristocratic young woman who’s fallen on hard times thanks to her father’s carelessness with their fortune. She’s put to work as a scullery maid, but sees herself as capable and deserving of so much more. In short order, she makes herself indispensable, wheedling her

way into a prime position at the queen’s side. What follows is a wickedly entertaining game of one-upmanship as the women scheme, manipulate, and generally act deviously as they battle for the queen’s affections. As an examination of the corruptive nature of power (or simply one’s close proximity to it), the film doesn’t exactly say anything new. But it’s fascinating and massively entertaining to watch these fiercely intelligent women, embodied by three wonderful actresses, play off one another. Through it all, there’s a sense that their behavior is a result of a lifetime of fighting for their place in a world dominated by men. This is what women must resort to for a bit of power. Despite their best efforts to achieve influence, the men are mostly useless. Chief

among them is dandyish Tory leader Robert Harley (an excellent Nicholas Hoult), who attempts to exert influence on the queen first through Sarah, then by encouraging his friend Masham (Joe Alwyn) to enter into a romantic relationship with Abigail. But there are glimmers of genuine feeling between the women, especially Anne and Sarah. After all, cruelty and compassion can both be the product of love. We’ve seen Weisz in this type of manipulator role before, and she’s great at it. Meanwhile, Colman finds the vulnerability beneath Anne’s capricious exterior; even at her most needy and petulant, we feel for her. The stylized camerawork gives this costume drama a modern flair, as cinematographer Robbie Ryan uses fisheye lenses, whip pans, and long dolly shots to keep us off-balance while conveying the enormity of the spaces these personalities inhabit. “The Favourite” might be the first of Lanthimos’s films that can truly be described as “fun” — it’s basically an historical, impeccably costumed “All About Eve.” It’s also the first of the director’s films that he didn’t have a hand in writing, through the script by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara maintains his idiosyncratic sensibility. The profanely anachronistic dialogue, and hilariously sharptongued barbs lend the film a giddy energy. Anyone who expected Lanthimos to deliver a staid period picture has probably never seen one of his films. But it’s still somewhat shocking what a twisted delight “The Favourite” turns out to be. A scrumptious confection laced with poison, it’s one of the most deliciously enjoyable films this year.
