A warm welcome from Lucy
“
I’m delighted to be launching our latest publication, The Icon. There have been many exciting developments at The Balmoral recently, not least the arrival of Lucy the Border Terrier. Full of character and mischief, she’s a great addition to the team and the latest celebrity to grace the halls of The Balmoral. As summer hits, Edinburgh becomes a cultural whirlwind, with visitors flocking to the world’s biggest arts festival. The city is given a whole new lease of life and it is wonderful to be a part of that. We’ve created a quick guide to the festivals on page eight. If you’re looking for some peace and quiet to escape the festival madness, why not head to one of our recommended picnic spots? We have our new summer menus and a fabulous cocktail list, all waiting to be enjoyed. Welcome to The Balmoral.

Glamis Suite A SUITE
fit A QUEEN for
Have you heard The Balmoral has a new royal addition? We’ve just revealed a stunning new look for one of our signature suites, The Glamis, which is now one of the city’s most impressive spaces thanks to an extensive refurbishment. Named after one of the country’s most beautiful and historical royal abodes, Glamis Castle, childhood home of The Queen Mother, the newly launched Suite is full of period charm and regal references, its ambiance and offerings giving a hint of its namesake’s legacy of style, intrigue, rebels and revolution. 4 - The Icon - The Balmoral
Summer - Issue No. 1 Its prime position overlooking Princes St means the Glamis Suite is an ideal spot for watching the world go by. The new suite can be booked with one, two or three bedrooms, making it perfect for couples, families and VIPs. If being incognito is your thing then there’s a new entrance to the Glamis Suite which offers discreet, private check-ins. Authenticity is at the heart of what we do and we have celebrated the original features of the suite. Book cases - set within the original Edinburgh presses - and art featuring Scottish botanicals are just some of the unique touches to admire. The showpiece Shinola record player and vinyl collection are a nod to the Rock ‘n Roll greats who frequent the hotel and the record menu offers an ever-growing collection based on suggestions from our guests.

SUMMER WITH
the Prince
Scotland’s most famous connection with Europe was the Auld Alliance with France. First established in 1295/6,
this alliance wasn’t simply a military relationship; it was based on a historic friendship founded on the Scots’ love of French wine. French wine landed on Wine Quay in Leith and rolled up the streets to the merchants’ cellars behind the water front. The wine was mostly for the higher echelons of Scottish society, but it seems to have been popular with everyone for Hogmanay celebrations. Brasserie Prince is based on this century’s old friendship – the food from world renowned French chef, Alain Roux, in an iconic Scottish setting. This French cuisine created from Scottish ingredients, is as mouth watering as the wines on offer. To book a table at Brasserie Prince by Alain Roux, please call the team on 0131 557 5000

Edinburgh is famed for its International Festival that runs throughout August. Launched in 1947, The Edinburgh International Festival began as a celebration of culture in a post-war era. The Festival Fringe began when eight companies appeared and performed their own shows alongside this Festival. A year later, in 1948, a Scottish journalist and playwright described the situation: “Round the fringe of official Festival drama, there seems to be more private enterprise than before ... I am afraid some of us are not going to be at home during the evenings!” The name ‘fringe’ was coined and this ‘sideshow’ has become as well known as the original festival. For 31 days, Edinburgh becomes a city that doesn’t sleep. Art, opera, comedy and dance for every age come together to create a festival like no other. We asked Victoria Houghton, CEO of Hamilton & Inches, Scotlands luxury jeweller, for her top tips on getting the best out of the most famous festival in the world (probably). Did you know? 1902 - The hotel’s iconic clock was set three minutes fast, so that people wouldn’t miss their trains. This is still the case today. The only day that the clock runs on time is on 31st December (Hogmanay) for the city’s New Year celebrations. 1932 – In July, comedy duo Laurel and Hardy visited the North British Hotel as part of their visit to Edinburgh. Crowds gathered outside the hotel to catch a glimpse of the famous pair. 1991 – When the hotel reopened after a major refurbishment it was named ‘The Balmoral’ which means “majestic dwelling” in Gaelic.
