he Importance of Community for Women in Business
Now more than ever, women in business need to come together to support, mentor, inspire, and empower each other. Throughout history, and still today, women’s voices and stories have been treated differently from those of their male counterparts. No matter what organization you work for or how supported you are personally, this creates a unique lived experience that can only truly be understood by other women, which is precisely why finding a community of women to be a part of is so important.
Since the onset of the pandemic, there has been a new wave of female entrepreneurialism. According to research from Wells Fargo, women-owned businesses have grown to account for over 39.1% of all companies in our country, and constant innovation and extreme resilience in the face of nonstop change have defined the enduring success of women-owned
We owe it to each other to continue to find new opportunities to support these female business owners and leaders. No matter where you are on your journey or in your career, finding a group of your peers to uplift and be uplifted by is a worthwhile experience. Young professionals and seasoned executives alike will grow when in the right company, and find ways to better support
Greater Rochester Chamber is proud to play a role in creating this community for so many in our region. Our Women’s Council initiative unites women from diverse backgrounds to foster networking, professional growth, and empowerment. These programs include interactive panel discussions, fullday conferences, casual networking & fitness events, celebrations of female leaders, support for the next generation of women, and initiatives addressing key legislative issues affecting women, and more.
And of course, we would be remiss not to acknowledge the important step you are all playing in this - we cannot create a community alone. Thank you to everyone who has joined us this evening to celebrate our outstanding ATHENA Awards finalists. And, thank you to our sponsors and partners for helping to make this possible and investing in women in Greater Rochester. We’re stronger together, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Leading by Example: Keuka College’s Master of Science in Leadership
Whether they’re looking to climb the corporate ladder, start their own business, or drive positive change in the rapidly evolving healthcare sector, tomorrow’s changemakers will find that Keuka College’s Master of Science in Leadership (MSL) program gives them the skills and confidence they need to make their mark on the world.
“This online program is designed for busy, working professionals,” said College President and ATHENA Award finalist Amy Storey. “In addition, we’ve launched a new specialized healthcare management track to meet the region’s rising demand.”
Dr. Myra Henry, one of Greater Rochester’s foremost community leaders, counts her master’s program at Keuka College among the most transformative experiences in her journey from adult learner to nonprofit executive. Since 2020, she has served as CEO of the YWCA of Rochester & Monroe County.
“I had a demanding full-time job, and I was married with four kids,” Myra recalled. “Keuka College’s program checked all of the boxes.” Cassey Cornish is one of several recent graduates making an impact in the healthcare field. She joined the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca as a receptionist and pursued her degree while serving as a credentialing specialist. Her experience at Keuka College has helped her advance in her career and thrive in her current position as the medical staff director for the Cayuga Health System, which spans Tompkins and Schuyler counties.
“My education at Keuka College has proven invaluable as I have focused on building a strong team and promoting growth and resilience in an evolving landscape,” Cassey said.
President Storey added, “It’s remarkable local leaders like Myra and Cassey that make me especially proud of Keuka College and its pivotal role in building a stronger, more vibrant region.”

Making an impact
Nixon Peabody congratulates our partner Jenny Holmes on her recognition as a 2025 ATHENA International Young Professional Award finalist. Through her professional leadership and empowerment of women, Jenny is driving positive change for our colleagues and communities.
1300 Clinton Square, Rochester, NY | nixonpeabody.com
Nixon Peabody LLP is proud to sponsor the 39th Annual ATHENA International Award and celebrate the exceptional women who are strengthening our community. These awards have always resonated deeply with our law firm. Our Rochester office is fortunate to work with and amongst many ATHENA honorees, and we can attest to the tremendous impact they’re making through their leadership. Thank you to Greater Rochester Chamber for bringing us together in recognition of these efforts.
ATHENA honors the kind of leadership that transforms our world—leadership that elevates, innovates, and inspires positive change through professional excellence. This year’s slate of finalists is no exception. They represent a range of industries and expertise, from public service to education to technology to the law. But they unite in their commitment to championing those around them. We’re especially thrilled to congratulate one of our own, Jenny Holmes, for her selection as a finalist in the Young Professional Award category. Jenny is the kind of attorney that raises the bar for client service and gender equality in the law. She not only infuses excellence in her own legal work, but lends her skills to support her colleagues and causes that make Rochester better.
As a global law firm, we’ve witnessed immense progress over the years toward gender inclusion and equality for women attorneys. But more work remains to be done. As a historically male-dominated field, we must continue working collectively to deconstruct gender biases in the workplace, promote the voices of women in leadership roles, and open new doors for women to succeed. We’re proud to stand with the leaders that are spearheading cultural progress, and the organizations they represent, to celebrate the ATHENA International Awards.
The 8 Principals of Enlightened Leadership
The ATHENA Leadership Model, developed through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, identifies eight distinct attributes that are reflective of women’s contributions to leadership: living authentically, learning constantly, advocating fiercely, acting courageously, fostering collaboration, building relationships, giving back, and celebrating. These personal traits that are more intuitive to women and combined with the strongest aspects of traditional leadership - taking risks, assertiveness, hard work - prepare women to be successful leaders in the 21st century.
We know the value of emerging and transformative styles of leadership that are closely tied to the intuitive strengths that women bring to leadership. The ATHENA Leadership Model captures these principles for use in contemporary settings, while acknowledging that they have been handed down from women across the world and over generations. In short, the ATHENA Leadership Model meets the needs of emerging leaders and speaks convincingly to women leaders who will head the organizations of the future.
