MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends and Fans, On behalf of Rochester College and all its athletic teams, thank you for your past support and welcome to the sports activities of the 2014-2015 academic year. Our coaches and players all work hard to make you proud to be “Warrior Fans” because Rochester College’s mission is not only to “cultivate academic excellence, principled character, servant leadership, and global awareness within an inclusive Christian heritage” but also to serve our community. We welcome you to our sports events and to our campus. We invite you to get to know our institution better—our students, coaches, faculty and staff. Rochester College is proud of our strong tradition of athletic excellence. In recent years, men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s softball and men’s golf have all won national titles. Last year we added men’s hockey as a club sport under the oversight of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). We are pleased to announce that over the last two years, we have added men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s bowling, and women’s cross country as intercollegiate sports governed by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The life of a successful student-athlete is demanding, requiring untold hard work, dedication, discipline, and focus. At Rochester College, we are tremendously proud of all our athletes and coaches, and we are very grateful for the continuing encouragement they receive from our campus family and our larger community. Thank you for all you do to support Rochester College and our athletic programs. Sincerely,
John Tyson, Ph.D. President

REMEMBERING TRAVIS BASS
1972-2011 Travis Bass was a dear friend of head basketball coach Klint Pleasant. They were teammates together on the football team at Abilene Christian University from 1994-1996. They remained extremely close after their college days and were major influences in each other lives. Due to the close relationship, Travis ended up becoming one of RC basketball’s biggest fans and supporters. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2007 and fought hard for four years before passing away due to complications from the disease in May 2011. Coach Pleasant traveled to Seattle, WA several times during Travis’ fight with ALS and then assisted with his eulogy. Travis was a special individual and one of the most talented persons Coach Pleasant has ever known. Travis owned real estate, car lots and mini storages, and was an accountant by trade. He also developed and sold his own BBQ sauce and had a BBQ catering business. Later in his life, he decided to study and practice law and graduated from the University of Idaho with a law degree. He wanted to fight for people that needed help and always envisioned doing most of his work pro bono. He loved life and he loved people and never seemed to meet a stranger. Travis would take off from work for weeks and sometimes months at a time during the basketball season to watch Pleasant as he coached at Wayne State University, University of Tennessee-Martin, Kent State University, Abilene Christian University, and of course, Rochester College. Travis and Coach Pleasant shared an incredible bond. They traveled all across the country together and not a day went by, until Travis was too weak to do so, that they did not talk. Most importantly, Travis was a man of deep faith. Coach Pleasant cites his relationship with Travis in college as one of the key influences that helped him in his own faith journey. Coach Pleasant remains in contact with Travis’ parents (Randy and Sheila) and his wife (Kim) and children (Hannah, Savannah and Tristin). Travis loved RC Basketball, and his life and memory was honored all throughout the 2011-12 season as Pleasant’s team wore a “TB” patch on their uniforms. Coach Pleasant has now started an annual “Travis Bass Classic” to honor his friend. The classic features the RC men’s and women’s basketball teams playing multiple games every year with the goal of raising money that goes toward ALS research.
“
“
There is no way to put into words how important my relationship with Travis was and still is to me. He was my hero and my mentor, but most of all he was my dear friend. Not a day goes by that I do not think about him and the incredible influence he had on my life. He was there on my best day (the day my wife Rachel said, “I do”) and he was there on my worst day (the day the doctors told me that Rachel would probably die of brain cancer). I often find myself both sad and angry because he’s gone…but then I remind myself, to have a friend like Travis for just one day was one of the great blessings of my life.”

HEAD COACH
Head Coach 4th Season RC Coaching Record 81-20 Rochester College is a very familiar place for Head Men’s Basketball Coach Klint Pleasant. Pleasant took the reigns from his father and long-time RC basketball coach, Garth Pleasant, after assisting him for four seasons. Coach Pleasant has enjoyed much success early in his RC head-coaching career as the Warriors have a record of 81-20 after his first three seasons. In his first season, he led the Warriors to a 26-win season and a runner-up finish at the USCAA National Tournament. Pleasant built off his first-season success and took RC basketball on a historic run two years ago. In the schools first full year as a member of the NAIA, Pleasant led the Warriors to a 30-win season, USCAA National Championship, and a win over NCAA Division I foe Eastern Illinois University. Additionally, he led the school to its first ever berth in the NAIA National Tournament, first top 10 NAIA national ranking, and coached the first two NAIA All-Americans in the school’s history in Dramell Hogan and Drew Maynard. Maynard and Hogan also represented the Warriors on the USCAA All-American team. Last season, Pleasant led the Warriors to a 25-8 record reaching the USCAA national tournament once again. RC began the season ranked #25 in NAIA preseason top 25 poll for the first time in school history. The Warriors finished the regular season ranked third in the USCAA and second in the A.I.I. conference, qualifying for the A.I.I. conference tournament for the second year in a row. Under Pleasant’s guidance, the Warriors had senior Stavros Schizas selected as a first team All-A.I.I. performer while senior A.J. Burton and freshman Paris Pereira were named honorable mention. Schizas was named a first team USCAA All-American, and Burton and Pereira were recognized as honorable mention All-American performers. The NAIA also recognized Schizas’ play as he was selected as an NAIA honorable mention All-American. Schizas marked the third Warrior to be honored as an NAIA all-american performer under Pleasant. Currently, Schizas and Maynard have gone on to play professionally overseas, and Hogan has been invited to work out for NBA development league teams for the Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks and Phoenix Suns. Pleasant’s coaching resume is among the best. He comes to RC from NCAA Division II Abilene Christian University where he was the youngest NCAA Division II college coach in the country. At ACU, Pleasant coached the Wildcats to 25 wins in his first two seasons after taking over a program that had won only 13 games in the two previous seasons. Before coaching at ACU, Pleasant was an assistant coach at Kent State University (NCAA Div. I). During the 2001-2002 season, Pleasant helped coach the Golden Flashes to a Mid-American Conference record 30 games as the team advanced to the NCAA Div. I Tournament’s Elite Eight. The University of Indiana denied them a trip to the Final 4 on a nationally televised game on CBS. Since then, the Kent State team that Pleasant coached was named the “Mid-American team of the decade.” Pleasant coached and played a major role in developing the team’s center, John Edwards, into an NBA player. Edwards went on to play for both the Indiana Pacers and the Atlanta Hawks. He also coached power forward, Antonio Gates, who now plays in the NFL and is among the best tight ends in the game. Following his only season at Kent State, Pleasant was offered a chance to follow Head Coach Stan Heath to SEC powerhouse Arkansas. Pleasant, however, decided to remain at Kent State, only to be offered the head coaching job at ACU three months later. In addition, Rachel (Pleasant’s wife) received her master’s degree in Exercise Physiology while at Kent State. Prior to joining the Kent State program, Pleasant served as an assistant coach at (NCAA Div. I) University of Tennessee-Martin (1999-2001) and (NCAA Div. II) Wayne State University (1998-1999). While at UTMartin, he helped the Skyhawks qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. During his tenure at WSU, Pleasant helped lead the team to a 25-5 record, a top 5 ranking in the country, a conference championship and an NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen appearance. Pleasant completed his master’s degree in Education in 1999 while coaching at UT-Martin. Pleasant’s coaching career started at Lipscomb University where he served as a student assistant under late head coach Don Meyer, who is the fastest coach to reach 700 victories in the history of college basketball. Before his coaching career, Pleasant played football for Abilene Christian University (NCAA Div. II) under Head Coach Bob Strader in 1994. He graduated college from Lipscomb University in 1998. As a prep, Pleasant attended Waterford Kettering High School in Waterford, MI and played football for legendary high school football coach Mike Berry. He was a unanimous first team all-conference selection in football and was his team’s co-captain on the baseball, basketball and football teams. His 48 pass receptions in his senior year put him among the top five in the state of Michigan.

Pleasant’s roots are planted deeply in Rochester College’s soil as his grandfather Lucien Palmer was a founding father. Dr. Palmer served as the first dean of the College and later served as president for eight years. His father, Garth Pleasant, has served at Rochester College for nearly 40 years as the men’s basketball coach, athletic director, and as a member of the faculty. Klint and Rachel made the move back to Rochester College in 2005 after the birth of their first child, Abigail. Pleasant also serves as the RC athletic director and vice president of enrollment. The athletic department has seen the addition of five sports since Pleasant took over as AD and has finished in the top five of the USCAA Director’s Cup each of the last three years. RC has finished third for the last two years in the Director’s Cup, which is awarded to the USCAA institution that has the most success as an entire athletic department for that year. Pleasant was honored as the A.I.I. 2012 NAIA Coach of Character which is given to one coach in the Association of Independent Institutions conference every year that displays the NAIA five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. Enrollment (incoming classes) has increased more than 40% since Pleasant took over the reigns, and the largest incoming class in the school’s 52-year history was brought in during his second year managing the recruiting process. The Pleasant family experienced some personal struggles after moving back to Rochester Hills as Rachel survived a brain tumor and several surgeries. Rachel and Klint frequently travel to various places as they speak about their incredible journey. Klint also preaches on a regular basis throughout the region and is currently preaching regularly for the South Lyon Church of Christ. Pleasant resides in Rochester Hills, MI with his wife Rachel (Stevens) and two daughters Abigail, who will be turning ten years old on Jan. 1 and Julia, who turned 5 in October.

COACHING STAFF
Assistant Coach 4th Season Tom Webb enters his fourth year on the Rochester College Basketball staff after two seasons as an assistant coach for the Purdue Calumet’s men’s basketball program. Webb played a crucial role in the PUC basketball program by heading up recruiting, film exchange and player development. Webb is no stranger to the RC basketball program where he was a four-year player, helped the team record four 20-win seasons, including a school-record 26 victories in his senior campaign. Webb also helped the Warriors earn four-straight USCAA national tournament appearances, while serving as the team captain on the 2008-09 squad that advanced to the national championship game. The young coach participated in a number of coaching clinics during his time at Rochester, regularly attending legendary mentor Don Meyer’s Coaching Clinic. He was also a part of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan clinics, working with high profile coaches like John Belien, Hubie Brown, Jamie Dixon, Tom Izzo and Rick Majerus. Webb graduated from Rochester College in 2009 with a degree in behavioral sciences. He and his wife, Amy, currently reside in Auburn Hills, MI. COACH PLEASANT’S THOUGHTS ON COACH WEBB: “I am thrilled that Tom is on our athletic staff. I considered and spoke with several people for the position, but Tom surfaced to the top every time. Most important, Tom is a former student athlete (2009) at RC and he understands our mission. He graduated in four years and was a team captain. In addition, he was a vital part of four very successful seasons on the men’s basketball team. He is arguably the hardest playing basketball player that my Dad ever coached and his work ethic as an employee is the same. I have watched him closely since he left RC and he has impressed me in many ways. He is organized and possesses a passion to do things with excellence. Tom is from Davison, MI and spent the 2009-2011 seasons as the head assistant basketball coach at Purdue University-Calumet (an NAIA school in Hammond, IN).”

Assistant Coach 4th Season Scott is no stranger to Rochester as he grew up in Clawson, MI. Scott’s family have been long-time supporters of the college dating back to the school’s early years. Scott began his service at Rochester College in 2002 as he brought his strong business background to the classroom as a faculty member in the College of Business. Scott’s success in leading an employee fundraising campaign for the Athletic Center and his desire to work with prospective students led him out of the classroom and into administration where he served as the director of admissions and assistant athletic director. Scott brings a wealth of experience to Rochester College as he spent 14 years in banking and investment. In addition to his responsibilities in banking, Scott also spent time as a personal financial adviser for professional athletes. Scott helped coach the RC men’s basketball team in 2004 and 2005 when the team won back-to-back national championships. He graduated from Oklahoma Christian University in 1986 and went on to complete a Masters of Finance from Walsh College in 1996. In addition to his work in our basketball program, Scott Samuels serves as the Senior Director of Advancement at Oakland Christian School in Auburn Hills, Mich. Scott is married to Christie (Powers) and they have one son, Jacob Scott Samuels. COACH PLEASANT’S THOUGHTS ON COACH SAMUELS: “Coach Samuels has become a very good friend of mine throughout the last seven years while at RC. He worked with the team back in 2004 and 2005 as part of my dad’s staff and I asked him to help again. He is invaluable when it comes to organizational duties. He helps with class checks, study sessions, travel plans, stats and budgetary issues. The guys enjoy being around him, and his positive attitude is infectious. I’m grateful he’s willing to help, and the work he does makes our program better. He is constantly putting the program first and his willingness to give of himself is much appreciated. Scott is a major part of the program’s success.”

Assistant Coach 33rd Season If the game situation calls for it, Beaudoin can be seen leaning out, offering his glasses to referees as they run down the floor. If his voice goes out, he starts waving a towel. He is a master motivator. Beaudoin’s connection to the basketball program began during the ‘83‘84 season, and continued as his son, Dan, played on Rochester’s 1988 squad on his way to becoming College valedictorian. Beaudoin, who retired as lieutenant from the Madison Heights Fire Department in 1996, and his wife, Mary Ellen, are the parents of two other children and the grandparents of four. COACH PLEASANT’S THOUGHTS ON COACH BEAUDOIN: “Coach George has been a part of our program since 1984, and is one of the finest individuals I have ever been around. He is a servant leader and will do anything for anyone. I think next to my father there is no one who has given as much to RC basketball than Coach George. He is an encourager and a motivator. Our guys love being around him and his presence in practice and at games is invaluable. I was so excited to hear that he was still going to remain a part of the staff after my Dad retired. I can’t imagine RC basketball without Coach George.”“
Athletic Trainer 12th Season Keen begins his 12th year as Rochester College’s head athletic trainer. He holds a B.A. in political science from the University of Michigan (1995), a B.S. in exercise science from Lake Superior State University (2000), and his Athletic Trainers Certification (ATC) in 2000. Keen became interested in athletic training while helping his younger brother rehabilitate from anterior cruciate ligament surgery. As a student at LSSU, he worked with athletes in baseball, basketball, football and hockey from both the university and Sault High School. Before joining Rochester College’s athletic department, Keen spent two years at Oakland University, working primarily with the baseball and volleyball teams. COACH PLEASANT’S THOUGHTS ON RON: “Ron has been with us for 12 years now. He has helped take our athletic program to another level. Ron has truly embraced all of our sports teams, and I am very grateful for the long hours that he puts in all throughout the academic year. He is willing to help wherever needed and we lean on him for injury rehab and taking care of our athletes. Our players are fortunate to have him available to see to their athletic needs.”

ATHLECTIC DIRECTOR, EMERITUS
Athletic Director, Emeritus Athletic Director Emeritus and former Head Basketball Coach Garth Pleasant has been an active member of the Rochester College faculty since 1971. Born and raised in Flint, MI, Coach Pleasant attended Ainsworth High School and was a two-sport athlete in baseball and basketball. Coach Pleasant started his college years at Rochester College in 1967 where he starred on the men’s basketball team. After he transferred to Libscomb University and graduated with a degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation, Coach Pleasant started teaching at Rochester College. He also took on several other roles at the college including dean of students, coordinator of housing, and athletic director all while earning his master’s degree from Wayne State University. In 1972, Coach Pleasant became the head basketball coach at Rochester College. In his 38 years of coaching, Coach Pleasant won 720 games, four national championships, and was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame. He was also named the Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the year in 1989. Pleasant’s other honors include NSCAA Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1994, and USCAA Coach of the Year in 2004. Aside from coaching, Coach Pleasant was the minister at Lake Orion Church for 30 years and does public speaking to a wide variety of groups. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife Pat and his six grandchildren. Coach Pleasant is the father of RC head basketball coach Klint Pleasant, Rochester High School Head Basketball Coach Johnny Pleasant as well as the proud father of daughter Kim Speck.
GARTH’S THOUGHTS ON KLINT: “Having Klint take over the RC basketball program is truly a dream come true. The program has always been a family affair for our family with Pat being the MVP, Kim being a cheerleader and Johnny being a player. Klint literally traveled to games with me since he was 4 years old.” One only needs to attend a practice to see that he is an outstanding coach. He will, without question, take the program to another level. I couldn’t be prouder of him. My dream now, though I will not be around to see it, is that in 30 years when Klint steps aside that one of my grandsons will take over the program, which would mean that Rochester College would have 100 years of Pleasant’s coaching.”

2012-2013 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON
A SEASON TO REMEMBER In 2012-2013 the Rochester College Men’s Basketball team entered the season with high hopes. When the final buzzer rang that year, the team had etched its name into the RC record books as it marked a season of firsts for the 52 year-old program. It was the first time a Rochester College team participated in an NAIA conference tournament, the first time to compete in an NAIA national tournament, and the first time for a team to be ranked in the NAIA national poll. The team also recorded its first ever win over an NCAA DI opponent. In addition, the team beat institutions from NCAA DII, NCAA DIII and the NAIA. Most significantly, the team won its fifth USCAA national title. The Warriors efforts throughout the season eventually pushed them up to as high as #9 in the NAIA national polls, marking the first time any program at Rochester College was ranked in an NAIA national poll. The team traveled to North Dakota to play in its first ever NAIA conference tournament this past February. The Warriors lost in the second round of the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Tournament to host school Jamestown College who also earned a berth in the NAIA national tournament. From there, the Warriors earned a #15 seed in their first ever NAIA national tournament, eventually falling in the first round to Bellevue College. The experience was a great one for the first year NAIA program. “We knew it would be an uphill battle because there are so many established teams in the NAIA,” second year head coach Klint Pleasant said. “I think it speaks to the quality of our student-athletes and how dedicated this year’s group was. Cracking the top 25 for the first time was quite a feeling and then cracking the top 10 was something that our seniors ought to be proud of for years to come. This senior class was amazing and deserves so much credit for all the success of this year’s team.” After being ranked #1 in the USCAA national polls the entire year, the Warriors entered the USCAA national basketball tournament as the #1 seed. They defeated Saint Joseph’s College, Southern Virginia University and Daemen College on their way to the basketball program’s fifth national championship and the first since 2005. “To be honest,” Pleasant said, “this meant more to me than anything else we accomplished. I have so many fond memories as a child growing up sitting next to my dad at the USCAA Basketball National Tournament, and to have a chance to coach a team to a title in this great association was a dream come true. I also thought that this year’s tournament was by far comprised of the best teams I have ever seen at the USCAA Tournament. I was especially grateful that my wife and children were able to be at the USCAA championship game. My wife works so hard during the season and does so much on her own because I am on the road so often.”
16
Along the way, the Warriors set a record for most wins in a season with their 29-5 mark including a 19-game winning streak and a perfect 16-0 at home. Of their five losses, three were to NCAA DI schools (Kent State University, Indiana Purdue University-Fort Wayne, and University of Texas-Pan American). The other two losses were to teams who qualified for the NAIA national tournament. However, the Warriors also earned their first ever win over an NCAA DI opponent when they defeated Eastern Illinois 59-56 on EIU’s floor this past November. Coach Pleasant could not be happier with this year’s success. “I feel extremely blessed and humbled because some coaches coach all their lives and hope to have a year of 29 wins, a national title and a chance to defeat another team that plays at the highest level (NCAA D1),” Pleasant said. “To do all that in one season was unexpected and I am thrilled that I had a chance to coach this group.” The season saw the Warriors give up only 55 points per game, outscore their opponents by 19 points per game and hold their opponents to just 37.1% shooting from the field, all of which ranked 2nd in the nation in the NAIA. It also saw individual achievements from a few of its players. Senior forward Dramell Hogan (Novi, MI), senior forward Drew Maynard (Lake Orion, MI), and junior guard Stavros Schizas (Athens, Greece) earned USCAA All-American honors for their play during the season. Hogan was named USCAA Tournament MVP scoring 34 points and grabbing 7 rebounds in the championship game. Maynard was named to the USCAA AllTournament team while adding 19 points and 21 rebounds in the championship. Hogan and Maynard were named to the AllConference Team as well. Off the floor, sophomore guard Austin Karbowski (Commerce, MI) earned USCAA Academic All-American honors. While the season was one of firsts, Coach Pleasant realizes it was something that has been in the making for years. “I hope it confirms that not only is our foundation solid, but we are building upon it and being good caretakers,” Pleasant said. “In fact, I reminded our guys all throughout post-season play that we owed a debt to all the players that came before and worked so hard to help get the program where it is today. The sense of community and family is pervasive all throughout our program. It is a tangible thing that all our players describe and appreciate. To be coaching in this program and representing a school that I love is a great feeling. I love RC basketball.”

COACH PLEASANT ON AUSTIN:
“Austin has been the consummate teammate and player throughout his career here at RC. He has accepted every role that has been given to him, and he is seen as one of the most value teammates on the team. I am proud of what he has accomplished on and off the floor, and he has consistently led our team in individual GPA. He’s been an academic All-American, which is an achievement we are very proud of. Austin is a guy that we can point to when asked, ‘What does the perfect RC studentathlete look like?’”

COACH PLEASANT ON “G”:
“G has been a fine addition to our program the last 2.5 years. First of all, he is a great person. He has done well in the classroom during his time here and has always made good decisions off the court too. He is a big strong guy that has provided much needed depth at the 5 spot for us. He had some big games during his junior year and has the ability to seal and score every time down the court. He has always carried himself with class and I look forward to watching him do great things after he leaves our program.”

“Evan has been with us for 4 years and we’re a better program because of it. He is a selfless guy that just wants to win. Evan has the ability to seal and score and use his body to get fouled. He is a real asset for our team. I’ve also always appreciated his ability to rebound and willingness to take charges. He was part of a national championship team and runner up team (and 81 wins in the past 3 years). During his junior year he had some big games and contributed to our overall success that year. I appreciate Evan off the court too. He is a good student and a first-class guy to be around. I’m grateful for all he has given our program. ”

ROCHESTER COLLEGE BASKETBALL COACH WINS COACH OF CHARACTER AWARD In just three seasons, Rochester College Head Basketball Coach Klint Pleasant has made his mark not only as a winning coach, but also as the leader of a team honored for its character on and off the court. On June 1, 2012 the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the governing body for approximately 350 smallcollege athletics programs in the United States, honored Pleasant as the Association of Independent Institutions 2012 NAIA Coach of Character. The AII Conference, made up of 34 college institutions throughout the United States, honors one coach each year whose program displays the NAIA five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. This honor carries extra value, as this past year was Rochester College’s first year in the NAIA and AII. “This award is humbling,” Pleasant said. “I had no idea. I am grateful for the nomination as well as being recognized from this association. I hope this will solidify our standing with the NAIA moving forward and bring some recognition to Rochester College.” Sean Mattia, a former student-athlete at Rochester College and point guard who helped nominated Pleasant, said, “The amount of work Coach Pleasant puts in to build up our character on and off the court is absolutely incredible. He emphasizes each day that not only does he want us to be the best player on the court but he emphasizes how he thrives on us being the best friend, son, brother and student we can possibly be. Not only does he coach basketball, he coaches life.”
men and women who attend here in a Christian environment. Klint and his staff are following through on that promise. The award is certainly an honor for Coach Pleasant at a personal level. It is also and affirmation of everything we are doing as a Christian college.” Sticking to the mission of Rochester College has not been a tough task for Coach Pleasant as it is “the way” for him and his coaching staff. “The mission of Rochester College stands for all the things that end up making a team great like unselfishness, discipline, being on time, and giving your best. These are things we stand for,” said Coach Pleasant. Taking over for his father, Garth Pleasant, Coach Pleasant stated that he simply followed the blueprint his dad had left. “We just kept doing the same things my dad did for 38 years,” he said. “The important thing has been the kind of student-athletes that we have recruited, guys who fit the personality and mission of the college. When these guys get here, we simply focus on the things that we think are important like servant leadership, leaving the locker room cleaner than how we found it, the way we act in restaurants and hotels, the way we act before and after a game. These are things that we are always talking about and are always emphasizing. “This is an award for our team and for our guys and for the other coaches too, because they all have embraced the Champions of Character attitude,” Pleasant said.
The award has shared meaning with former Rochester College President Rubel Shelly. “This award means that Rochester College is being true to its mission,” Shelly said. “We have promised to provide for the intellectual, social and athletic development of the

PLEASANT SPEAKS OUT AGAINST BULLYING ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Winning championships is one of the main focuses throughout the year for Rochester College Head Basketball Coach Klint Pleasant. However, as a father of two, most people do not know that Coach Pleasant has another agenda that he tends to and feels very strongly about. On Friday, May 23, 2013 Coach Pleasant addressed a crowd of 850 middle school students at Van Hoosen Middle School as the culmination of anti-bullying week put on by the Van Hoosen’s girl scouts. “Klint was absolutely incredible,” said Van Hoosen Middle School Principal Michael Behrmann. “He spoke for about 10 minutes at our assembly which was the culminating event of our anti-bullying week.” Van Hoosen Middle School, part of the Rochester Community School District, runs several different types of assemblies each year, ranging from pep assemblies, to recognition assemblies, to ones such as the anti-bullying assembly that build character. “Coach (Pleasant) was incredible and delivered a powerful, yet simple message. He held our 850 middle school students spellbound for ten minutes,” said Principal Behrmann. “It was silent in our gym. He was clearly one of the most impactful speakers I have seen in my years. He truly connected with the students.” Having a brother (Johnny Pleasant) who currently works in Rochester Community Schools and a mother who worked for the district, Coach Pleasant jumps at any opportunity to work with the kids in the same school district his two daughters attend, especially when the students are in the important years of development. “I think talking to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders is a unique opportunity because they are at such a formative stage in life,” said Coach Pleasant. “I was very impressed that the students actually came up with the idea to have an anti-bullying week and wanted to end the week of awareness with a speaker.”
26
Bullying continues to plague many school campuses and is having a life long effect on those who are targeted. “We have had players on our team here at RC express past experiences with being bullied, so it is a sensitive topic even for college students, perhaps,” said Coach Pleasant. “I know that bullying can be a real problem both physically and now even through social media. I hope we can do our part in spreading the word about how hurtful it can be. Hurting someone that is weaker than you is not power, it is actually a sign of being a coward. We stressed that real power is having the ability to harm someone, and then not harming him or her. We also stressed the importance of being a good friend and not being a ‘on looker’, but helping out victims,” said Coach Pleasant. The Rochester College Basketball has participated in several talks and camps throughout the past year that will get the RC basketball players involved in the local community.
