REMEMBERING TRAVIS BASS
TRAVIS BASS 1972 – 2011
Travis Bass was a dear friend of head basketball coach Klint Pleasant. They were teammates together on the football team at Abilene Christian University from 1994-1996. They remained extremely close after their college days and were major influences in each other’s lives. Due to the close relationship, Travis ended up becoming one of RU basketball’s biggest fans and supporters. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2007 and fought hard for four years before passing away due to complications from the disease in May 2011. Coach Pleasant traveled to Seattle, several times during Travis’ fight with ALS and then assisted with his eulogy. Travis was a special individual and one of the most talented persons Coach Pleasant has ever known. Travis owned real estate, car lots and mini storages, and was an accountant by trade. He also developed and sold his own BBQ sauce and had a BBQ catering business. Later in his life, he decided to study and practice law and graduated from the University of Idaho with a law degree. He wanted to fight for people that needed help and always envisioned doing most of his work pro bono. He loved life and he loved people, and he never seemed to meet a stranger. Travis would take off from work for weeks and sometimes months at a time during the basketball season to watch Pleasant as he coached at Wayne State University, University of Tennessee-Martin, Kent State University, Abilene Christian University, and of course, Rochester University. Travis and Coach Pleasant shared an incredible bond. They traveled all across the country together and not a day went by, until Travis was too weak to do so, that they did not talk. Most importantly, Travis was a man of deep faith. Coach Pleasant cites his relationship with Travis in college as one of the key influences that helped him in his own faith journey. Coach Pleasant remains in contact with Travis’ parents (Randy and Sheila) and his wife (Kim) and children (Hannah, Savannah and Tristin). Travis loved RU Basketball, and his life and memory were honored all throughout the 2011-12 season as Pleasant’s team wore a “TB” patch on their uniforms. Coach Pleasant has now started an annual “Travis Bass Classic” to honor his friend. The classic features the RU men’s and women’s basketball teams playing multiple games every year with the goal of raising money that goes toward ALS research. The Local ALS chapter supports the classic and are present during the games.
“There is no way to put into words how important my relationship with Travis was and still is to me. He was my hero and my mentor, but most of all he was my dear friend. Not a day goes by that I do not think about him and the incredible influence he had on my life. He was there on my best day (the day my wife Rachel said, “I do”) and he was there on my worst day (the day the doctors told me that Rachel would probably die of brain cancer). I often find myself both sad and angry because he’s gone…but then I remind myself, to have a friend like Travis for just one day was one of the great blessings of my life.”

WARRIOR HEAD COACH Pleasant came to RU from NCAA Division II Abilene Christian University where he was the youngest NCAA Division II college coach in the country. At ACU, Pleasant coached the Wildcats to 25 wins in his first two seasons after taking over a program that had won only 13 games in the two previous seasons. Before coaching at ACU, Pleasant was an assistant coach at Kent State University (NCAA Div. I). During the 2001-2002 season, Pleasant helped coach the Golden Flashes to a Mid-American Conference record 30 wins as the team advanced to the NCAA Div. I Tournament’s Elite Eight. The University of Indiana denied them a trip to the Final 4 on a nationally televised game on CBS. Since then, that Kent State team was named the “Mid-American Team of the Decade.” Pleasant coached and played a major role in developing the team’s center, John Edwards, into an NBA player. Edwards went on to play for both the Indiana Pacers and the Atlanta Hawks. He also coached power forward, Antonio Gates, who now plays in the NFL and is among the best tight ends in the game. In 2016, Kent State University inducted the entire 2001-02 team, and coaching staff, into the Kent State Athletic Hall of Fame. Following his only season at Kent State, Pleasant was offered a chance to follow Head Coach Stan Heath to SEC powerhouse University of Arkansas. Pleasant, however, decided to remain at Kent State, only to be offered the head coaching job at ACU three months later. Prior to joining the Kent State program, Pleasant served as an assistant coach at (NCAA Div. I) University of Tennessee-Martin (1999-2001) and (NCAA Div. II) Wayne State University (1998-1999). While at UT- Martin, he helped the Skyhawks qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. During his tenure at WSU, Pleasant helped lead the team to a 25-5 record, a top 5 ranking in the country, a conference championship and an NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen appearance. Pleasant completed his master’s degree in education in 1999 while coaching at UT-Martin. Pleasant’s coaching career started at Lipscomb University where he served as a student assistant under late head coach Don Meyer, who was the fastest coach to reach 700 victories in the history of college basketball. Before his coaching career, Pleasant played football for Abilene Christian University (NCAA Div. II) under Head Coach Bob Strader in 1994. He graduated college from Lipscomb University in 1998. As a prep, Pleasant attended Waterford Kettering High School in Waterford, Mich., and played football for legendary high school football coach Mike Berry. He was a unanimous first team all-conference selection in football and was his team’s co-captain on the baseball, basketball and football teams. His 48 pass receptions in his senior year put him among the top five in the state of Michigan. Pleasant’s roots are planted deeply in Rochester University’s soil as his grandfather Lucien Palmer was a founding father. Dr. Palmer served as the first academic dean of the College and later served as president for eight years. His father, Garth Pleasant, served at Rochester University for nearly 40 years as the men’s basketball coach, athletic director, and as a member of the faculty. Pleasant also serves as the Senior Vice President of Athletics and Special Assistant to the President. The athletic department has seen the addition of eleven sports since Pleasant was given oversight of the Athletic Department. In 2015-2016 RU won the USCAA Director’s Cup with a first place finish. This is awarded to the most successful overall athletic department within the USCAA. On several occasions, RU has been named an NAIA Champions of Character Five Star Institution including its first ever Gold Level recognition for the 2017-18 year. Pleasant was honored as the A.I.I. Conference 2012 NAIA Coach of Character which is given to one coach in the Association of Independent Institutions conference every year that displays the NAIA five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. In 2015-2016 Pleasant was also named the USCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Coach of the year. And in 2016-17, he was named the A.I.I Conference Coach of the Year. Pleasant spent eight years as the Vice President over Enrollment, increasing new student enrollment each year, including the largest incoming class in the school’s 58-year history enrolled in the fall of 2017. In September of 2019 Pleasant earned a Doctor of Education degree from Lipscomb University. The Pleasant family experienced some personal struggles after moving back to Rochester Hills as Rachel survived a brain tumor and several surgeries. Rachel and Klint frequently travel to various places as they speak about their incredible journey. Klint also speaks on a regular basis throughout the region. Pleasant resides in Rochester Hills with his wife Rachel (Stevens) and two daughters Abigail, who will be turning 15 years old on January 1 and Julia, who will turn 10 this November. 10

SCOTT SAMUELS Assistant Coach 9th Season
Coach Samuels is no stranger to Rochester as he grew up in Clawson. His family have been longtime supporters of the college dating back to the school’s early years. Samuels began his service at Rochester College in 2002 as he brought his strong business background to the classroom as a faculty member in the School of Business and Professional Studies. His success in leading an employee fundraising campaign for the Athletic Center and his desire to work with prospective students led him out of the classroom and into administration. Samuels brings a wealth of experience to Rochester University as he spent 14 years in banking and investment. In addition to his responsibilities in banking, he also spent time as a personal financial adviser for professional athletes. Scott helped coach the RU men’s basketball team in 2004 and 2005 when the team won back-to-back national championships. He graduated from Oklahoma Christian University in 1986 and went on to complete a Masters of Finance from Walsh College in 1996. GEORGE BEAUDOIN Special Assistant Coach 38th Season
If the game situation calls for it, Beaudoin can be seen leaning out, offering his glasses to referees as they run down the floor. If his voice goes out, he starts waving a towel. He is a master motivator. Beaudoin’s connection to the basketball program began during the ‘83-‘84 season, and continued as his son, Dan, played on Rochester’s 1988 squad on his way to becoming College valedictorian. Beaudoin, who retired as Lieutenant from the Madison Heights Fire Department in 1996, and his wife, Mary Ellen, are the parents of two other children and the grandparents of four. COACH PLEASANT’S THOUGHTS ON COACH GEORGE: “Coach George has been a part of our program since 1984, and is one of the finest individuals I have ever been around. He is a servant leader and will do anything for anyone. I think next to my father there is no one who has given as much to RU basketball than Coach George. He is an encourager and a motivator. Our guys love being around him and his presence in practice and at games is invaluable. I was so excited to hear that he was still going to remain a part of the staff after my Dad retired. I can’t imagine RU basketball without Coach George.”

His voice is always met with respect from the rest of the team and his effort on both ends of the floor serves as an example for the young players below him. He is one of a handful of players who has served a major role in each of our seasons in the WHAC. Using his strength and very good fundamentals, Peter has become one of our better low post players in recent years, and has become a core piece in our program throughout his time at RU. After spending a year playing at the University of Akron, he has now made RU his home the past three years and has truly embraced the culture and expectations that we set for each of our players. Peter cares deeply for the success of our team and program and that will only grow as he enters his final season here.”

Wesley Cansler signs with Rochester University men’s basketball By: Jacob Herbert | C&G Newspapers | Published September 25, 2018 ROCHESTER HILLS — Inside an athletic complex packed with family, friends, coaches, media members and players, 5-yearold Wesley Cansler, of Hazel Park, put pen to paper Sept. 18, signing his letter of intent and officially becoming the newest member of the Rochester College men’s basketball team. By far the youngest member of the team, Wesley became a Warrior through a partnership between the college and Team IMPACT, a nonprofit headquartered in Boston that matches children facing serious or chronic illnesses with local teams. Since 2011, Team IMPACT has matched nearly 1,600 children with more than 500 colleges and universities in 48 states. Since birth, Wesley has been battling a rare genetic disorder called WAGR syndrome. According to his mother, Cathryne Cansler, babies born with WAGR syndrome often have eye problems, are at high risk for developing certain types of cancer and have a range of developmental delays. “As a family, we have fought for him and with him every step of the way,” Cansler said. “From appointments to surgeries and even chemotherapy, we have been in his corner rooting him on. We are honored to now say we have Rochester College in our corner as Wesley becomes a Warrior. We hope that this experience will leave as much of an everlasting impression on you as we hope it will us.” Wesley didn’t crawl until he was 15 months old. He was diagnosed with cancer at 17 months and didn’t walk until 25 months. He’s been through 19 rounds of chemotherapy. You would not have known any of this walking through the doors of Garth Pleasant Arena. Wesley was full of life, smiling, cheering and clapping throughout the night. He even took some time to pass a basketball around with his new teammates. “He’s always excited and happy, which is motivation for us to see that every morning,” Bloomfield Hills High graduate and Warriors guard Armand Cartwright said. Cartwright, along with teammates Cannon Campbell, Kash Blackwell, Moses Toriola and Cap Wilson, were tasked with being ambassadors for the college and introducing Wesley and his family to the program.
26
“They came here for the first official meeting back in the beginning of the summer,” Campbell said. “He came here with his parents and his brother. It was kind of interesting at first because it’s something completely new. He hasn’t been around us; we haven’t been around him. Before long, he was running around and having a blast. So that was really cool.” It didn’t take much time for Wesley and the team to become the best of friends. The team spent Wesley’s fifth birthday with him at his house, enjoying cupcakes, playing cornhole and listening to Taylor Swift. All of which are favorites of the newest Warrior. From there, the relationship grew into what it is today. Wesley has an open invitation to the athletic facilities anytime he wants. He’s invited to attend every practice and team dinner. He even has his own locker and a seat on the Warriors bench. “Whenever we’re here, he’s welcome.” coach Klint Pleasant said. Pleasant, whose father coached the Warriors for 40 years prior to him taking the job, said this relationship is about much more than basketball, and he believes the relationship with Wesley should have a huge impact on his players. “This is about relationships and truly learning life lessons,” he said. “To be able to do something like this and for them to be able to interact with Wesley and have Wesley interact with us, it’s what we’re all about, and it speaks to the mission of our school. We’re a private Christian school, and so these values and virtues are important to us.” All parties involved in the relationship say they’re excited for what the upcoming season will bring and the experiences that Wesley and the team will share. Cansler agreed, but added an important thing to consider as things progress. “With his condition being so rare, this is also helping spread awareness and letting these young men and women know more about this and people like him,” she said, adding that there are less than 500 cases of WAGR syndrome in the world.
