And yeah, RC events like Dinner at 6 (where faculty and staff open up their homes for dinner), Midnight Breakfast (where you can stuff yourself with pancakes served by your professors as you’re cramming studying for final exams), or the frequent bonfires (with s’mores, of course), etc. etc. etc., might mean your tummy stays pretty full too. Don’t worry though—we have a solution to the “freshman 15” on page 11! 5

SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS & PROFESSIONALLY SKILLED

SINCE 2005, THE RC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT HAS BOASTED A TOTAL OF MORE THAN 100 STUDENT TEACHERS. MANY GO ON TO BE EMPLOYED LOCALLY. THE PROGRAM’S REPUTATION, ALONG WITH THE FACULTY’S STRONG TIES TO LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS, HAS SEVERAL AREA SCHOOLS SPECIFICALLY REQUESTING RC GRADS. “I WAS CHALLENGED TO MAKE MY WEAKER AREAS MY STRONG AREAS, AND MY STRONG AREAS OF TEACHING MY GREAT AREAS,” SAID STEPHAN HENNING, A 2011 GRADUATE WHO TEACHES FOURTH GRADE AND COACHES MEN’S VARSITY BASKETBALL WITHIN THE OXFORD SCHOOL DISTRICT.

This is more than just your average nursing program. It features small class sizes, excellent student-faculty ratios, clinical work primarily with Crittenton Hospital, and curriculum designed to enhance students’ understanding of health and illness in the context of a Christian environment using a relationship-based care model. It’s the foundation that will lead to making a difference in countless lives.

running with the leaders & the best

As with other programs, our size is our strength. The Behavioral Sciences department is no different. Rather than interacting primarily with graduate assistants as they might at a larger school, RC psych students work one-on-one with their professors, all of whom carry the highest credentials within the study of psychology and are currently active in their fields as practicing clinicians. Students who go on to further their education have high acceptance and success rates in graduate school. Recent grad Kristen Hodge said, “I am ahead of most of my peers, even those who graduated from state universities such as University of Michigan. Many of the other students have not even heard of some of the concepts that I learned during undergrad. Also, the oral presentations I completed at RC left me confident enough to teach a two-hour lecture shortly after starting my grad program.”

FIRST-RATE FACULTY

In every last one of the degree programs listed here, you’ll meet first-class faculty who are passionate about their chosen subjects. You’ll get to know professors who are excited to share their insights with you. You’ll be taught by educators whose work is widely recognized in their fields. And perhaps the best part about the faculty of Rochester College is that they don’t stop supporting you the minute their classtime ends. They make time for you. They go above and beyond their scheduled office hours to ensure your academic success. They invite you into their homes to share a meal and get to know you on a personal level. They act as mentors, advisers, sponsors, and snack providers to student groups and clubs. They’ll be rooting for you during the championship game and giving you a standing O after that big performance. They will make it their mission to see to it that you are becoming the person God intended you to be. Personal attention like this is classic RC.

7

A higher calling means a higher quality of higher education. Service, love, social justice. These things are as integral to the RC experience as education and healthy amounts of socializing. Interacting within our campus community, with our neighbors in the Detroit Metro area and with the rest of the world is a fundamental part of our Christian tradition. Our students are contributors, organizers, empowerers, collaborators, sharers, encouragers, leaders, builders and learners.

You don’t have to be an athletic all-star to play intramurals (although, all-stars are welcome too). And if you’re more the “Go! Fight! Win!” type of person, the teams can always use the moral support. So, grab your lucky socks and come out to the volleyball/basketball/flag football/dodgeball/ultimate frisbee game that individual students, small groups, social clubs and even the RC employees are playing. If you can recite at least half a dozen vocal warm-ups and define words like solfège and diminuendo, you should definitely consider being a part of our long-standing tradition of music. You can also join our lively concert band. For some, Greek life is quintessentially college. It’s without a doubt a great way to meet new people and get involved in campus life. Members of our social clubs pledge each fall and spend the year hanging out and having fun, working on service projects, performing in Celebration and competing in intramurals. Clubs include Sigma Phi Delta Nu, Alpha Kappa Tau, Omicron Omega Zeta and Epsilon Theta Chi.

Are you an effective public speaker with a firm hands hake and winning smile? All right, forget that. Do you like being a part of change and growt h, with tons of fun in between? If so, join SG when you get here. Once you’re elected by your peers, you can be our next student body prez! Or VP, treasurer, secretary or senator. Sound familiar? Then it’s time to get involved in our theatre department. In its 53rd year, the RC Theatre Department produces four plays, ranging from classical to contemporary, on campus each year. The company often takes performances into the community as well. Additionally, each fall RC Theatre partners with the music department to produce a musical. Whether you work behind the scenes or have the starring role, you’ll be learning from professional actors and skilled directors. Oh, and you’ll have a blast.

THE ROCHESTER COLLEGE WARRIORS ARE AN UNDENIABLE ATHLETIC FORCE. We compete as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. RC Athletics are currently among the best in the USCAA and after just two years, we have earned a competitive reputation among NAIA opponents. RC Warriors play one of the toughest small-college schedules in the country, going up against teams from Eastern Michigan University, Central Michigan University, Oakland University, Kent State University and the University of Toledo. Four of our sports teams were ranked in the top 15 at the conclusion of the 2013 athletic year. We’ve also brought home national titles in men’s basketball (1989, 1997, 2004, 2005, 2013), men’s cross-country (1989, 1990), men’s golf (2009, 2010), men’s soccer (1996, 2006), women’s volleyball (1998, 1999) and softball (2011). Our athletic teams are consistently among the best in both quality of play and quality of players. Thirty-three percent of our student body are athletes and many receive national recognition for their academic and athletic achievements. Our athletic program is committed to athletes who perform in their sport, excel in the classroom, and lead in the campus and local community.

WE TAKE PRIDE IN BEING SITUATED WHERE A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCES AND OPPORTUNITIES ARE AT YOUR DOORSTEP. Rochester offers the closeness of a small community, but don’t misunderstand — the suburban setting is anything but boring. In fact, CNN’s Money Magazine says Rochester is one of America’s top places to live. In our vibrant downtown district, you’ll find countless restaurants, shops, hangouts and hot spots. When you want to get off campus, the area’s extensive trail system provides unlimited routes for biking, running, hiking or catching up with a friend during a scenic walk along the Clinton River. On the weekends, hit up a local festival or grab some fresh cider and donuts at Yates Cider Mill, a community tradition since 1863. And we can’t forget to mention that come Christmas time, the place really lights up! You’ll find Main Street aglow in more than 1.5 million points of glimmering holiday light during the annual Big, Bright Light show.

16

AND, BOY, IS OUR PLAYGROUND SOMETHING ELSE. No more than 30 miles in any direction, you’ll find numerous museums, markets, outlet malls, outdoor malls and of course, “regular” malls. Sports fans, you’re well taken care of here. Car enthusiasts, there might be a thing or two that gets your engines going. Music lovers, we pity your vocal chords and eardrums because goodness—you’ll be going to a lot of shows! No matter which way you turn, you’ll find an incredibly diverse, always inspiring setting for you to broaden your horizons. Our only advice—don’t forget your camera.

CHRISTIAN CARLISLE

Christian is one of those students who is perpetually in motion. He came to RC for the opportunity to play college baseball, but he certainly didn ’t stop there. He’s also a member of the A Cappella Chorus, involved in the theatre program, the treasurer of Kappa Tau Xi, a New Student Orientati on peer adviser and a student worker in the IT department. Oh, and wait—outside of RC he serves as the youth program director for Hard Court Hitters Association, a local nonprofit that specializes in educating yout h through athletic programs. “When I first came to RC, I was warm ly welcomed in every activity that I purs ued, and each of the activities I am involved in have taught me abou t myself, other people and life in gene ral. As part of this community, I’ve created bonds that will be hard to leave behind, but even harder to brea k once I graduate.”

CALEB STINNETT Simply put, Caleb wants to help people. He has a heart for the homeless and plans on one day working in a counseling role where he can encourage people to put their faith in God. Caleb says RC is helping him figure out exactly what his next steps will look like. “My favorite part about being a student at RC is that I am surrounded by people, whether it be friends, professors or administrators, who are genuinely interested in my life, genuinely care for me and love me, but who also challenge me to reach my full potential.

MELISSA MALSEED “All I know is that I want to be in an inner city somewhere, serving and loving people unconditionally. Either I’m going to do that by becoming a licensed counselor or I’m going to go into full-time ministry. I have a passion for women and children, and I would love to start a non-profit one day to help orphaned children or broken women.” The people of Detroit, in particular, have a special place in Melissa’s heart. “Spending spring break in the city, just serving people during Campus Ministry’s Urban Plunge, was an incredible experience.”
