Rochester Fringe Festival Guide 2013

Page 1

The only thing harder than producing a successful festival is creating a better one the following year. We think we are about to do just that. Last year we presented 180 performances at 22 venues in 5 days to over 32,000 people in downtown Rochester. This year—hold onto your seats—we are about to present 360 performances at 28 venues over 10 days. 120 of this year’s performances are FREE to the public, including a return engagement of the spectacular Bandaloop, who at last year’s festival dazzled 10,000 people with their mezmerizing mid-air ballet 17 stories off the ground. This year you will be able to step back in time in the incredible, elegant Magic Crystal, an early 1900s Spiegeltent in which we will be presenting a specially commissioned show, Cirque du Fringe. Imported from Belgium, equipped with a hardwood floor, an antique bar and beautiful wooden booths flanked by mirrors and stained glass, the Magic Crystal is the first Spiegeltent ever to appear in a fringe festival in the United States, so don’t miss your chance to see it. None of our events, of course, would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, for whom we are forever grateful, and our army of volunteers, whose thousands and thousands of volunteer hours help bring you what is now one of the largest fringe festivals in the United States. As always, though, our festival cannot be a success without you. Buy tickets. Attend shows. Bring a friend. And if you see one of our board members, give him or her a pat on the back.

WELCOME TO THE FRINGE!

We’re back!

Enjoy the show! The Board of Directors of the Rochester Fringe Festival

AND NOW, A WORD FROM OUR TITLE SPONSOR:

ROCHESTERFRINGE.COM 

We are proud to present the 2013 First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival! We at First Niagara are committed to supporting organizations that enrich the community, specifically in the areas of mentoring, education and the arts. I have called the Rochester area “home” for more than 26 years, and I enjoy the rich depth of museums, restaurants and arts programs our area has to offer. We believe the arts and downtown revitalization are vital to our growth. Rochester is full of innovative thinkers who make things happen – dreamers who dream on a big scale. One of First Niagara’s missions is to help fund and grow those dreams. Last year, the attendance numbers for the Fringe Festival far exceeded everyone’s expectations, and it was a big success for our community. We are ready to celebrate Rochester’s creative spirit again this year - and invite you to join us. The amazing BANDALOOP is returning! The Festival organizers have arranged for an old world Spiegeltent to delight us. There are many wonderful acts to see. So come downtown and discover something new!

FRINGE INFORMATION

IN AND AROUND ROCHESTER’S EAST END SEPTEMBER 19-28, 2013 A brief history of Fringe Festivals

In 1947, eight theatre groups turned up – uninvited – to perform at the newly-established and curated Edinburgh International Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Although not listed in the official program, the groups performed anyway at venues they found for themselves. The following year, a Scottish journalist coined the term “fringe festival” to describe these non-juried shows that began turning up annually. The Edinburgh Fringe is now the largest arts festival in the world, with 2013’s edition featuring more than 41,000 performances of some 2,800 productions. Today, there are more than 200 fringe festivals worldwide, with around 20 in the United States. The First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival was the first fringe festival in Upstate New York.

What is a fringe festival?

A fringe festival is simply a multi-day, multi-genre arts festival. Unlike traditional arts festivals, the venues decide their own programming, be it comedy, dance, theatre, music, visual arts, etc.

Festival Hub

Parking The First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival is held in Downtown Rochester’s East

End. Most venues are within walking distance of each other, which allows for one-time parking. The Fringe recommends one of the many surface lots and parking garages located near the Fringe hub on Gibbs Street, from East Ave to East Main St. (which will be closed to vehicle traffic during the for the second weekend of the festival). See map of page 70 for parking locations. Please note that the City of Rochester charges $7/car for all festival parking. The East End Garage (Main & Scio) and One HSBC Plaza charge $5/car.

Bike Parking Because the Fringe is a pedestrian-friendly event, it’s also an ideal venue for

those traveling by bicycle! The Fringe hub is easily accessible from East Avenue, with many bike racks and loops nearby. If you’re traveling into the city from the ‘burbs, throw your bike in the car, park in one of the many city side streets off East Avenue, and bike in from there. As always, it’s better to be safe than sorry: LOCK YOUR BIKE & WEAR A HELMET.

Info Booth The Fringe Info Booth will be located in Manhattan Square Park on the night of September 20th and at One Fringe Place (Corner of Main & Gibbs) for the entire duration of the festival (September 19-28th.)

Accessibility All Fringe venues are handicapped accessible. Individuals needing assistance

BANDALOOP

18

A pioneer in vertical dance movement, San Francisco’s BANDALOOP returns to the Fringe and the 21-story One HBSC Plaza (100 Chestnut Street) after enthralling more than 10,000 spectators last September with two breathtaking performances. The internationally-renowned company turns the dance floor on its side by seamlessly weaving together dynamic physicality, intricate choreography and the art of climbing. Founded by choreographer and artistic director Amelia Rudolph, BANDALOOP’s work has been presented in theatres and museums; on skyscrapers, bridges, billboards and historical sites; and on natural wonders around the world. From the Seattle Space Needle and the New York Stock Exchange to Yosemite’s El Capitan and the fjords of Norway, BANDALOOP honors nature, community and the human spirit as it re-images what dance can be.

HEADLINER MARC MARON

 FIRST NIAGARA Rochester Fringe Festival

with Nate Bargatze

20

Included in TIME MAGAZINE’s Most Influential People of 2012, stand-up legend Marc Maron has been writing and performing comedy for print, stage, radio and TV for more than 20 years. Maron is a regular on late-night TV, having appeared on Conan O’Brien’s show nearly 50 times—more than any other comedian. His podcast, WTF WITH MARC MARON, is a worldwide phenomenon, featuring monologues and in-depth interviews with iconic personalities and fellow comics from the comfort of his garage. The show averages an unprecedented 2.5-to-3 million downloads a month, regularly hits #1 on the iTunes charts, and has been called a “must-listen” by VANITY FAIR and THE NEW YORK TIMES. His half-hour series MARON has just been renewed for a second season on the Independent Film Channel (IFC), and he tours the world performing sold-out shows. Opening the show is Nate Bargatze, one of Marc Maron’s own “Comedians to Watch” (ROLLING STONE) and ESQUIRE’s “Best New Comedians of 2012.” Host of his own Comedy Central special with a debut album, YELLED AT BY A CLOWN, on BILLBOARD’s Top 10 Comedy Chart, Bargatze also won both the 2010 Boston and New York Comedy Festivals and has performed for the troops in Iraq five times. Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 8pm Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre (60 Gibbs Street) Tickets: $20-$55 This show will be interpreted.

AN EVENING WITH DAVE BARRY

22

Dave Barry has been a professional humorist ever since he discovered that professional humor was a lot easier than working. For many years he wrote a newspaper column that appeared in more than 500 newspapers and generated thousands of letters from readers who thought he should be fired. Despite this, Barry won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, although he misplaced it for several years, which is why his wife now keeps it in a secure location that he does not know about. Barry has written more than 30 books, including the novels BIG TROUBLE, LUNATICS, TRICKY BUSINESS and, most recently, INSANE CITY. He has also written a number of books with titles like I’LL MATURE WHEN I’M DEAD, which are technically classified as nonfiction, although they contain numerous lies. Two of Barry’s books were the basis for the CBS sitcom DAVE’S WORLD, which can probably still be seen on cable TV in certain underdeveloped nations. Friday, September 27, 2013 at 8pm Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre (60 Gibbs Street) Tickets: $20-$65 This show will be interpreted.

SPIEGELTENT MAGIC CRYSTAL SPIEGELTENT Ooh! It will sizzle! What is a Spiegeltent, you ask? In short, it’s one of the world’s

most fabulous performance venues. Originally constructed in Belgium around the turn of the 20th century, there are only a handful of these “Magic Mirror Tents” left – and one of them is coming to Western New York for the first time ever! Equipped with a hardwood floor, an antique bar and beautiful wooden booths flanked by mirrors and stained glass, our giant Magic Crystal Spiegeltent also features an outdoor beer and wine lounge called the Spiegelgarden. The ambiance of the Magic Crystal creates a most magical experience – one that will remain in the hearts and minds of Fringe-goers long after the last mirror has been taken down. We have no doubt that it will cast its spell on you as well.

 FIRST NIAGARA Rochester Fringe Festival

The Spiegeltent’s Rochester debut has been made possible due to a generous grant from the Elaine P. and Richard U. Wilson Foundation. The Magic Crystal is owned by Spiegeltent Productions LLC and Mirror Palace BVBA.

Location: One Fringe Place at the Corner of Gibbs & Main Streets Entry to the Spiegeltent is via ticket only.

24

Please note: per City regulations, last call is 30 minutes prior to closing.

To enter, please purchase a ticket to Cirque du Fringe or Silent Disco.

SPIEGELGARDEN

Our Spiegelgarden, adjacent to the Magic Crystal Spiegeltent, is a festive, inviting outdoor beer and wine lounge with a decidedly laid-back vibe. Designed and landscaped by Broccolo Tree & Lawncare, the Spiegelgarden also features lounge furniture from McCarthy Tents & Events. SPIEGELTENT Nightly! Think sassy, sexy, funny. A little bit of burlesque, a little bit of cabaret and a lot of edge – not to mention a twist of Vegas on the side. National artists perform aerial displays of daring, skill, grace and strength, as well as unimaginable feats of juggling, magic, balance and flexibility. This world-premiere show was created exclusively for the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival in Orlando, FL. And, it takes place inside one of the most magical venues Rochester has ever seen: the Magic Crystal Spiegeltent. Curious? Intrigued? Titillated? Trust us, you will be.

SPIEGELTENT  FIRST NIAGARA Rochester Fringe Festival

Now that you have a mental picture of the glamorous Magic Crystal Spiegeltent, imagine it full of people engaged in a giant dance party. Of course, there’s a Fringe-y twist: you don’t hear a sound. That is, until you slip on a set of headphones. Wait! Is that YMCA on one channel and David Guetta on another? A two channel system and live DJs let you switch up your music at the touch of a button. Hugely popular in Europe and at US festivals like Bonnaroo and Burning Man, it’s an unforgettable experience you have to see—and not hear—to believe!
