The only thing harder than producing a successful festival is creating a better one the following year. We think we are about to do just that. Last year we presented 180 performances at 22 venues in 5 days to over 32,000 people in downtown Rochester. This year—hold onto your seats—we are about to present 360 performances at 28 venues over 10 days. 120 of this year’s performances are FREE to the public, including a return engagement of the spectacular Bandaloop, who at last year’s festival dazzled 10,000 people with their mezmerizing mid-air ballet 17 stories off the ground. This year you will be able to step back in time in the incredible, elegant Magic Crystal, an early 1900s Spiegeltent in which we will be presenting a specially commissioned show, Cirque du Fringe. Imported from Belgium, equipped with a hardwood floor, an antique bar and beautiful wooden booths flanked by mirrors and stained glass, the Magic Crystal is the first Spiegeltent ever to appear in a fringe festival in the United States, so don’t miss your chance to see it. None of our events, of course, would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, for whom we are forever grateful, and our army of volunteers, whose thousands and thousands of volunteer hours help bring you what is now one of the largest fringe festivals in the United States. IN AND AROUND ROCHESTER’S EAST END SEPTEMBER 19-28, 2013 A brief history of Fringe Festivals
In 1947, eight theatre groups turned up – uninvited – to perform at the newly-established and curated Edinburgh International Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Although not listed in the official program, the groups performed anyway at venues they found for themselves. The following year, a Scottish journalist coined the term “fringe festival” to describe these non-juried shows that began turning up annually. The Edinburgh Fringe is now the largest arts festival in the world, with 2013’s edition featuring more than 41,000 performances of some 2,800 productions. Today, there are more than 200 fringe festivals worldwide, with around 20 in the United States. The First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival was the first fringe festival in Upstate New York.
What is a fringe festival?
A fringe festival is simply a multi-day, multi-genre arts festival. Unlike traditional arts festivals, the venues decide their own programming, be it comedy, dance, theatre, music, visual arts, etc.

Festival Hub
Parking The First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival is held in Downtown Rochester’s East
End. Most venues are within walking distance of each other, which allows for one-time parking. The Fringe recommends one of the many surface lots and parking garages located near the Fringe hub on Gibbs Street, from East Ave to East Main St. (which will be closed to vehicle traffic during the for the second weekend of the festival). See map of page 70 for parking locations. Please note that the City of Rochester charges $7/car for all festival parking. The East End Garage (Main & Scio) and One HSBC Plaza charge $5/car.
Bike Parking Because the Fringe is a pedestrian-friendly event, it’s also an ideal venue for
those traveling by bicycle! The Fringe hub is easily accessible from East Avenue, with many bike racks and loops nearby. If you’re traveling into the city from the ‘burbs, throw your bike in the car, park in one of the many city side streets off East Avenue, and bike in from there. As always, it’s better to be safe than sorry: LOCK YOUR BIKE & WEAR A HELMET.
Info Booth The Fringe Info Booth will be located in Manhattan Square Park on the night of September 20th and at One Fringe Place (Corner of Main & Gibbs) for the entire duration of the festival (September 19-28th.)

His podcast, WTF WITH MARC MARON, is a worldwide phenomenon, featuring monologues and in-depth interviews with iconic personalities and fellow comics from the comfort of his garage. The show averages an unprecedented 2.5-to-3 million downloads a month, regularly hits #1 on the iTunes charts, and has been called a “must-listen” by VANITY FAIR and THE NEW YORK TIMES. His half-hour series MARON has just been renewed for a second season on the Independent Film Channel (IFC), and he tours the world performing sold-out shows. Dave Barry has been a professional humorist ever since he discovered that professional humor was a lot easier than working. For many years he wrote a newspaper column that appeared in more than 500 newspapers and generated thousands of letters from readers who thought he should be fired. Despite this, Barry won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, although he misplaced it for several years, which is why his wife now keeps it in a secure location that he does not know about. Barry has written more than 30 books, including the novels BIG TROUBLE, LUNATICS, TRICKY BUSINESS and, most recently, INSANE CITY. He has also written a number of books with titles like I’LL MATURE WHEN I’M DEAD, which are technically classified as nonfiction, although they contain numerous lies. Two of Barry’s books were the basis for the CBS sitcom DAVE’S WORLD, which can probably still be seen on cable TV in certain underdeveloped nations. THE MYTHOLOGY CYCLE is a collection of four one-act plays from Rochester native and current Berkeley graduate student Truc Doan. The plays focus on the mystery of identity, the search for truth, and the nature of reality. QUIET RIVERS was performed in 2006 as part of Geva Theatre Center’s Regional Playwrights Festival. Its companion piece, LONNIE ON THE BRIDGE, is being presented for the first time in this production.
A group of college students and a professor wait in an empty library. A hesitant discussion ensues about a student named Ethan, who we discover was involved in some sort of tragedy.
