ď‚Ť FIRST NIAGARA Rochester Fringe Festival

We’ve teethed and toddled our way through two phenomenal years and, my, how we have grown! Last year we presented 360 shows to more than 50,000 people, which made us one of the most-attended fringe festivals in the country, but we’re not content to stand still. This year, we’re hosting more than 380 shows—about a third of which are absolutely free— in venues that range from a pup tent to Kilbourn Hall. The Magic Crystal Spiegeltent returns as the hub of the festival, featuring an all-new, New Orleans-themed Cirque du Fringe show, MARDI GRAS, as well as SILENT DISCO, a naughty late-night 20 PENNY CIRCUS and Saturday Night Live’s JAY PHAROAH. None of this could be possible, of course, without our many sponsors, upon whose generosity we rely to survive and thrive. Ticket and merchandise revenues defray only a fraction of our expenses, so please take note of these fine companies and generous individuals (listed in our guide and displayed at locations around the Festival) who have kindly supported our efforts financially and made these many events possible. Finally, Fringe cannot succeed without YOU. You are why we do this, and you can help: buy tickets, t-shirts and food, and come back often. But most of all, have fun!

WELCOME TO THE FRINGE!

It’s hard to believe we’re three.

Enjoy the show! The Board of Directors of the Rochester Fringe Festival

AND NOW, A WORD FROM OUR TITLE SPONSOR:

ROCHESTERFRINGE.COM 

We at First Niagara are very proud to be the title sponsor of the 2014 First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival! The Fringe is a unique event that enriches the community, creates excitement and brings people to Rochester’s cultural center. It is an inspiring celebration of our community’s creative spirit. We believe the arts and downtown revitalization are essential components in enhancing our city’s vitality and empowering it to thrive. We are huge proponents of initiatives that enhance our downtown, encourage community collaboration and build partnerships. The Fringe accomplishes all of that by putting Rochester on the map as a performing arts destination. Though only in its third year, the First Niagara Fringe Festival has blossomed into one of the most successful fringe festivals in the nation. Last year, it attracted more than 50,000 people to 360 performances during its 10-day run! Come with your family to one of our free outdoor events, take in a show at one of our transformed local destinations, or experience the world’s most glamorous tent – the Spiegeltent. Join us downtown to see why we’re getting rave reviews from the critics and the thousands of festival-goers who can’t wait to see what we have in store this year!

FRINGE INFORMATION

IN AND AROUND ROCHESTER’S EAST END SEPTEMBER 18-27, 2014 A brief history of Fringe Festivals

In 1947, eight theatre groups turned up – uninvited – to perform at the newly-established Edinburgh International Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Although not listed in the official program, the groups performed anyway at venues they found for themselves. The following year, a Scottish journalist coined the term “fringe festival” to describe these non-juried shows that began turning up annually. The Edinburgh Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world, with 2014’s edition featuring nearly 50,000 performances of over 3,100 productions at 300 venues around the city. Today, there are more than 200 fringe festivals worldwide, with around 50 in the United States. The First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival was the first fringe festival in Upstate New York and is now one of the nation’s most attended.

What is a Fringe Festival?

A fringe festival is a multi-day, usually multi-genre arts festival. In short, it’s several days of theatre, dance, music, comedy and more - the most amazing all-you-can-eat arts smorgasbord! Many of the shows are original, average around sixty minutes in length, and engage audiences in new and exciting ways. Venues can range from proper theatres to pretty much anything you can imagine!

A brief history of the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival

Debuting for five days in 2012, the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival attracted 33,000 to 180 performances in its first year. In 2013, it grew to 10 days, 360 performances, and 50,000 attendees. Based on the Edinburgh model, Rochester’s Fringe is curated by the participating venues themselves, which choose shows based on submissions from artists. Organizers also produce a few headliner events as well as free entertainment on Gibbs Street and Friday on the Fringe each year. The not-for-profit Rochester Fringe Festival was pioneered by several of Rochester’s cultural institutions: Geva Theatre Center, George Eastman House and Garth Fagan Dance, as well as emerging groups such as PUSH Physical Theatre and Method Machine. Its Board of Directors has expanded to include representatives from the University of Rochester, Eastman School of Music, Rochester Institute of Technology, Boylan Code, Mengel Metzger and Barr, and the Center for Youth.

CIRCUS ORANGE (7:30-8:30pm) Y O R K

S T A T E

P R E M I E R E !

If you loved BANDALOOP, wait ‘til you see CIRCUS ORANGE! Part mad science, part street theatre and 100% spectacle, Canada’s CIRCUS ORANGE creates lucid dreams with explosive shows that combine mind-blowing pyrotechnics, special effects and aerial rigging with street theatre, clowning, fire arts, dance and circus. They’ll bring their hour-long production, TRICYCLE, but this is no kiddie bike, folks! This TRICYCLE is a magnificent, 18-foot machine that makes its nomadic journey right through the crowd, blurring the lines between audience and performer. Improvised interactions and stunts take place along the way, with larger production numbers at key staging areas. Then, try to catch your breath as the TRICYCLE pops a wheelie 60 feet over your head, becoming a human-powered pyro wheel. Oh, and a full-scale fireworks show rages in the background. It’s the most fun Rochester’s ever had on three wheels!

HOW TO ENJOY TRICYCLE: TRICYCLE is a “promenade” performance that will begin at various points in and around Martin Luther King, Jr. Park at Manhattan Square and weave throughout the crowd. Depending upon where you are in the park, your experience will differ from those of spectators in other areas – that’s the beauty of TRICYCLE. At the conclusion of the show, all eyes will be drawn to the big stage on Court Street and the show’s spectacular finale.

SPIEGELTENT THE MAGIC CRYSTAL SPIEGELTENT RETURNS TO FRINGE! Last year, Rochester swooned to the elegant beauty of this jewel box of a venue from Malle, Belgium. Originally created as traveling dance halls in the early 1900s, these magical “Mirror Tents” boast handcrafted wooden floors, stained glass windows, faceted mirrors, velvet-draped ceilings, an antique bar, and private booths. Fit for royalty, only a handful of these lavish treasures remain in the world today, and we’re thrilled to bring the Magic Crystal back to Fringe! The Spiegeltent was a total sell-out hit last year. Buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

ALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei), a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this gifted trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies, western instruments, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music, but its overall sound and spirit is decidedly Tuvan. continues on page 62
