Dear Friends,

Welcome

from the President & CEO

We are pleased to bring the RPO’s 2014-15 main season to a harmonious conclusion with three programs celebrating the human voice. Five-time Grammy Award nominee Michael Feinstein will give us a ‘S Wonderful Pops Series finale with a tribute to the music of George and Ira Gershwin (May 29 and 30). Wrapping up our Sunday Matinee Series at Hochstein, the Concentus Women’s Chorus joins us for a celebration of English composers featuring the works of Thomas Morley, Vaughan Williams, Handel and more (May 31). The following weekend, Carl Orff’s masterpiece Carmina Burana will shake the rafters at Kodak Hall with the vocal talents of our friends and frequent collaborators, the Rochester Oratorio Society and the Bach Children’s Chorus (June 4 and 6). These three powerhouse vocal events serve as the perfect crescendo into our Summer Season, featuring a varied lineup of community concerts led by Music Director Ward Stare—11 concerts in 11 different venues throughout the month of July. On July 3, the RPO returns to CMAC in Canandaigua for the patriotic “Salute to America,” with crowd-pleasing favorites such as The Stars and Stripes Forever and 1812 Overture, as well as post-concert fireworks. The following night, the RPO plays our annual Independence Day concert on Main Street in downtown Rochester. The “Summer of Stare” continues with a free outdoor concert at Ontario Beach Park (July 8); we return to collaborate with the Rochester Red Wings for a night of baseball, music, and fireworks at Frontier Field (July 17); and we look forward to other community concerts in Geneseo, Perinton, and at Nazareth College; a benefit evening at Penfield Country Club; and more! For the complete schedule of summer concerts, visit rpo.org/summer. This is also a good time to look ahead to the RPO’s 2015-16 Season, Ward Stare’s inaugural season as Music Director. Ward opens our Philharmonics Series on September 17 and 19 with four unforgettable masterworks including Ottorino Respighi’s sonic showpiece Pines of Rome. (Stay tuned for more information on our Italian-themed opening night celebration in honor of Ward’s first hand-crafted program at the RPO!) The previous weekend, our Pops Series opens with Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik and Megan Hilty, star of NBC’s Smash and Broadway’s Wicked. Single tickets for the RPO’s 2015-16 season go on sale Friday, July 31 at 10 AM. As always, we value your patronage at the RPO and hope you will join us for an exciting summer of music at the RPO and throughout next season!

Ward Stare Music Director

Our Music Director

Appointed the 12th music director of the RPO in July 2014, Ward Stare has been described as a “rising star in the conducting firmament” by the Chicago Tribune. His current season includes debuts with orchestras around the world, including performances with the Baltimore, Sydney, Pittsburgh, and New World symphonies, as well as the Calgary Philharmonic.

2014/15 Season

Stare’s frequent collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago began with his debut in 2012 conducting performances of Hansel and Gretel; he returned in 2013 to lead Die Fledermaus and again in November 2014 to lead Porgy and Bess. He led the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra and Chorus in 2013 for his Millennium Park debut at LOC’s annual “Stars of Lyric Opera” concert. Following his debut with the Opera Theater of St. Louis in 2013 conducting Il Tabarro and Pagliacci, Stare returned to OTSL the next season for performances of Dialogues of the Carmelites. He made his debut with the Washington National Opera conducting Donizetti’s comic opera L’elisir d’amore in 2014.

Halski Studio

Stare served as the resident conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra from 2008 to 2012. In 2009, he made his Carnegie Hall debut with the orchestra, stepping in at the last minute to lead H.K. Gruber’s Frankenstein!! The 2013-14 season saw his return to the Atlanta and Detroit symphony orchestras, as well as his debuts with the Syracuse Symphoria, the Jacksonville Symphony, and the Naples Philharmonic. Other recent engagements include the Houston, Québec, and Dallas symphonies, as well as numerous engagements with the Saint Louis Symphony. Stare was the recipient of both the Robert J. Harth Conductor Prize (2006) and the Aspen Conducting Prize (2007) at the Aspen Music Festival before spending the 2007-08 season as a League of American Orchestras Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Stare was trained as a trombonist at the Juilliard School in Manhattan. At 18, he was appointed principal trombonist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and has performed as an orchestral musician with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, among others. artists Through his live performances, recordings, songwriting, film, and television appearances, Michael Feinstein is an all-star force in American music. He is considered one of the premier interpreters of American standards. His 200-plus shows a year have included performances at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, and the Hollywood Bowl, as well as the White House and Buckingham Palace. This is his first appearance with the RPO.

Gilles Toucas

Michael Feinstein, vocals and piano

Nominated for two Emmy and five Grammy awards, Feinstein’s considerable success can be traced back to Columbus, Ohio, where he began playing piano at age 5. In 1977, Feinstein was introduced to the legendary Ira Gershwin and went on to become his assistant for six years. During that time, he was granted access to unpublished Gershwin songs, which he has since performed and recorded. Feinstein capitalized on this experience and evolved into a solid composer and arranger of his own music while also gaining a solid reputation for interpreting the music of other legends such as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington, and Harry Warren. Feinstein was named principal pops conductor for the Pasadena POPS in 2012 and made his conducting debut in June 2013 to celebrated critical acclaim. He also serves as artistic director of the Palladium Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Ind. Feinstein has received national recognition for his commitment to celebrating America’s popular song and preserving its legacy for the next generation. In 2007, he founded the Great American Songbook Foundation, dedicated to celebrating the art form and preserving it through educational programs, Master Classes, and the annual High School Songbook Academy, a summer intensive open to students from across the country. He serves on the Library of Congress’ National Recording Preservation Board, an organization dedicated to ensuring the survival, conservation, and increased public availability of America’s sound recording heritage. Feinstein earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 2009 for The Sinatra Project, his Concord Records CD celebrating the music of Sinatra. The Sinatra Project, Volume II: The Good Life was released in 2011. His Emmy nominated TV special, Michael Feinstein–The Sinatra Legacy, which was taped live at the Palladium in Carmel, Ind., aired across the country in 2011. The PBS series Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook was the recipient of the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Television Broadcast Award. His next primetime TV Special on PBS, Michael Feinstein at The Rainbow Room, aired on New Year’s Eve, 2014. For his nationally syndicated public radio program Song Travels, Feinstein interviews and performs alongside music luminaries such as Bette Midler, Neil Sedaka, Liza Minnelli, Rickie Lee Jones, David Hyde Pierce, and more. Feinstein is the recipient of three honorary degrees. www.MichaelFeinstein.com.

“No one nowadays sings ballads like these with the conviction that Feinstein brings to them. He performed them straight from the heart with an almost operatic formality and without a trace of irony.”- the new york times

John Oddo, guest conductor A master’s graduate of the Eastman School of Music, John Oddo is a musician with tremendous versatility. He has long collaborated with Michael Feinstein, serving as conductor/music director for many of Feinstein’s symphony performances and writer for Feinstein’s symphony and big band arrangements. He received a Drama Desk Award nomination for his orchestrations for Feinstein and Dame Edna Everage’s 2010 Broadway show, All About Me. Oddo was also music director and arranger for Feinstein’s PBS specials, Michael Feinstein at the Rainbow Room and Michael Feinstein New Year’s Eve at the Rainbow Room. Having started his career as a pianist, arranger, and composer for Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd, Oddo met Rosemary Clooney in 1983 and served as her music director, pianist, and arranger for more than 18 years. His credits include work on 20 of her recordings, as well as countless live and televised performances. As music director/arranger/pianist, his collaborators also include Debby Boone, Christine Ebersole, Melissa Errico, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Barbara Cook, Cheyenne Jackson, Maureen McGovern, David Hyde Pierce, Linda Ronstadt, and James Naughton, for whom he was music director and arranger for PBS “Live from Lincoln Center” presents James Naughton: The Songs of Randy Newman. Other projects include composer and performer for PBS/Showtime’s Our Town, directed by James Naughton and starring Paul Newman, and conductor, pianist, and arranger for the NBC special Scott Hamilton & Friends. He has also performed at the White House for four of the last five presidents. This is his first appearance with the RPO.

ROBERTO SIERRA Fandangos For more than three decades, the works of Roberto Sierra have been part of the repertoire of many of the leading orchestras, ensembles and festivals in the U.S. and Europe. Commissioned works include: Concerto for Orchestra, for the centennial celebrations of the This is the first performance by the RPO Philadelphia Orchestra; Sinfonía No. 3 “La Salsa,” commissioned by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and Double Concerto for violin and viola, co-commissioned by the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia Orchestras. He has served as composer-in-residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, among others. In 2010, he was elected to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. b. October 9, 1953 Vega Baja, Puerto Rico

“Fandangos” was commissioned and premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C., with Leonard Slatkin conducting, on February 28, 2001. This dazzling orchestral fantasy has become one of the most frequently performed works of the last decade, with more than 200 performances to date. It had as its points of departure two examples of the Spanish folk dance, the fandango. One was written by the baroque Spanish composer Antonio Soler (1729-1783), and the other by an Italian, Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), who spent much of his life in Spain.

ALBERTO GINASTERA “Four Dances” from Estancia b. April 11, 1916 Buenos Aires, Argentina d. June 25, 1983 Geneva, Switzerland First performed by the RPO November 10, 1963 Arthur Fiedler, conductor Last performed by the RPO April 25, 2008 Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor

Ginastera was the finest composer that Argentina has produced. Until the 1950s, such early compositions as the ballet score Estancia showed the strong influence of Argentinean folk music. Later creations displayed an exciting, colorful style with less folk flavor to it. His catalogue includes three operas, concertos for harp, violin, piano and cello, piano and chamber pieces, and choral works. In 1940, the dance company known as American Ballet Caravan was touring South America. Impressed by Ginastera’s music, its director, Lincoln Kirstein, commissioned a new score from him, one which would reflect Argentinean life and music. The composer obliged with Estancia (The Ranch). The story takes place on the vast, grassy pampas. The central character is a young man from the city who comes to work on a ranch. A girl whom he finds attractive thinks him a weakling at first. He wins her affections by demonstrating that he can match the local gauchos in sheer physical strength. Then he shows off his artistic side by becoming the last person on his feet at the end of a men‑only dance contest, the Malambo, which is the rousing finale of this concert suite from the ballet.

CARL ORFF Carmina Burana

d. March 29, 1982 Munich, Germany First performed by the RPO January 8, 1959 Theodore Hollenbach, conductor Rochester Oratorio Society

Jens Rusch

By the mid‑1920s, European art music had become more complicated and more intellectualized than most listeners could grasp, or were willing to tolerate. Composers in several lands recognized the need for a shift in attitude. Carl Orff chose the approach of creating theatrical spectacles in which straightforward, communicative music, words, and movement combined to produce immediate and striking impressions that appealed to a broad range of audiences.

b. July 10, 1895 Munich, Germany

Last performed by the RPO May 24, 2008 Christopher Seaman, conductor Rochester Oratorio Society

After occupying various positions throughout Germany, largely in theatre, Orff returned to Munich, his native city, in 1924. Together with Dorothee Günther, he founded the Güntherschule, an institution which gave young people combined schooling in music and movement. His work there resulted in his first volume of musical exercises for children. This area of interest would eventually rival in importance his activities as a composer for the theatre. At the beginning of the 1930s, while serving as conductor of the Munich Bach Society, Orff produced a number of arrangements of early music. His research in this area eventually led to the creation of Carmina Burana, his first (and greatest) success. The texts are what give the score its name. In 1803, at the monastery of Benediktbeuern in Upper Bavaria, musicologist J.A. Schmeller discovered a manuscript collection of lyrics, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. Schmeller dubbed it Carmina Burana (Songs from the Beuern, or in Latin, Burana district). Probably the work of wandering scholars and defrocked priests, its texts are mostly in Latin, with a sprinkling of old German. The polite side of the collection includes six plays based on the Christmas, Passion, and Easter mysteries. The earthier part contains some 200 drinking songs, love lyrics, and recruiting songs. When Orff came across the manuscript in 1935, it captivated him immediately. He saw in it the ideal vehicle to express the kind of basic, uncomplicated human emotions he had in mind. Choosing two dozen poems from the collection, with the assistance of Michel Hofmann, he matched them with equally direct music. The premiere of Carmina Burana took place in Frankfurt on June 8, 1937. The illuminated pictures which accompanied the original poems intrigued Orff virtually as much as the words. He found the cover portrait particularly striking (and stimulating): an image of luck, shown as a revolving wheel, blindly governing people’s destinies. Orff begins his Carmina Burana with a grandiose hymn, Fortuna imperatrix mundi (Fortune, Empress of the World), saluting this inscrutable, unpredictable concept. Primo vere (In Springtime), follows. It deals, mostly in quiet, mysterious fashion, with the anticipated arrival of that season. Joy eventually breaks forth as spring itself appears. It is celebrated in the section entitled Uf dem Anger (On the Green). The next segment, In taberna (In the Tavern) salutes the juice of the grape in riotous fashion. The tenor soloist, singing in falsetto, takes the role of a swan roasting slowly and sadly on a spit. The baritone is an Abbot who launches the men of the choir into a rollicking ode to drink. Cour d’amours (The Court of Love) brings several of Orff’s loveliest, most lyrical moments. The soprano solo In trutina (In the Balance), a glowing anticipation of fulfillment, is a particular highlight. After the ecstatic fervor of Blanziflor et Helena (Blanchefleur and Helen), Orff’s ode to fortune returns, in cyclical fashion, to close Carmina Burana as majestically as it began. © 2015 Don Anderson.
